“Biggest Little City in the World”
RENO — I’m not sure if Reno’s self-description — “Biggest Little City in the World” — is humble or boastful.
I do know it’s a gorgeous day, with temperatures in the 50s.
The Warriors arrived last night, and will practice today. I’ll post photos from the workout.
Meanwhile, we all got upgraded on the red-eye flight. One problem: My seat faced the rear of the plane:
Which meant I had a lovely view of these guys for five hours:

Why oh why do I torture myself and continue to follow this team and cheer them on… oh well, GO BOWS!!!
ST: What did you think of those rear facing seats?
Seewhy:
I was disoriented.
But it was great. It was one of those lie-down seats. People actually booed when the pilot announced we were arriving early.
Kanak:
You do it because it’s football, and you’re an American (right?), and we all love to watch football. And we know what the spring is like without football.
ST: Thumbs up. Relating to your post, fun little article on the “challenge” of travel for the rest of college football (excluding Hawaii): http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/109082/texas-am-embarks-on-its-first-trip-outside-the-lone-star-state
ST: That’s funny! It sure looks comfortable though. I really think they should sedate us passengers in the “economy” section.
Kanak: “Excluding Hawaii.” Of course because we literally travel around the world in 80 days? Actually more like in a month.
Kanak, thanks for the reminder. We cheer them on because we’re fans. And I don’t care who is our quarterback, just bring home a W. If they don’t, still, Go Warriors !!!
Isnt there usually a curtain of some kind to separate and block the view between economy and first class?
Andrew,
Yes. Well, at one point post-911 they didn’t allow the curtain. I guess something has changed since then or they put in different kind of curtains because both on Hawaiian First and United First use it now.
Stephen, planning a trip to Chengdu?
#1 – Kanak, it’s because you’re a fan, and fan is short for “fanatic.”
aloha everyone !! its aloha friday !! lets go bows !!
On a somber note: RIP Chicken Alice (Yang).
I think (actually hope) this is the week where everything goes right for us and not the other team.
UH 31
UNR 17
And this time, if we’re up by 10…let’s press the gas harder to go up by 17. You know since our goal was to score 5.8 touchdowns a game…we can’t be wasting any time off of that clock.
Getting up at 3:30am in Monterey, CA, to drive to San Jose to catch the Alaska flight to Reno at 7:30am. Thank god for the early afternoon start–60s & 70s. We’ve frozen our tail off at the night games in MacKay Stadium! This is the one–GO WARRIORS!
Someting about Aloha Friday & Football makes me tirstay!
Get ready for the upset Sportsfans! Go Bows.!
It’s always hard to root against Nick Rolovich, but the home team comes first.
It’s a win-win.
I want Hawaii to win, but if we’re going to lose, at least it’s against somebody we universally respect, and whose job isn’t entirely secure.
Doesn’t Rolo still hold some obscure NCAA record for most yards in a 3-game span? He finished the year with a whole bunch of 500+ yard games, ending with the immaculate Brigham Young shellacking.
That was the apex of June Jones’ coaching career.
That was an overwhelming affirmation of his offense as being something other than “gimmicky”.
Let’s hope Hawaii can reach both, 35 points and 400+ yards.
Regardless of a win or loss, I’d be happy with meeting those numbers.
Concerning the 2016 Hawaii baseball schedule, I’m glad that I’m not the only person who feels that starting the season 0-5 is a recipe for disaster.
Our manager finally realized that the RPI is going to go up during the Big West portion of the schedule.
I am so relieved.
I, for once, am not filled with an overwhelming sense of fatalism.
The manager has finally given his team a fair shot of reaching the NCAAs.
Last year, during the third game against Oregon, I almost felt like shouting, “We’re not in the WAC anymore!!!”
Chicago State.
YES!!!
New Mexico
YES!!!
Confidence builders.
Thanks ur sacrifice to go watch them in Reno Dawei…me is sure you will be rewarded with a victory…finally…n in spite of… not to bright coaching…he he he
Have safe trip home…don’t celebrate to much the win on plane back…

UH 27, Nevada 28. UH has it in the one with 2 minutes left in the 4th, Nevada picks it off and runs back for 6.
odda kine news …
Miami defensive end Olivier Vernon was fined a total of $37,363 by the NFL for two separate roughing the passer infractions, one of which has left Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota unable to play this week.
An NFL spokesman confirmed to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that Vernon was fined, “$17,363 for striking the quarterback (Mariota) in the knee area in the second quarter and $20,000 for striking the quarterback in the head and neck area in the third quarter” of Sunday’s game.
If I was Rolo and if there was a chance to come back to Hawaii as HC, I would release the hounds and run up the score to impress the decision makers of my potential.
Nevada 42 Hawaii 0
Bryson……….Come on Man!
No faith, no spirit, You can go Alaa Park and do whatever.
Obviously you are not in Reno supporting OUR team.
Tomorrow………………….. WE WIN!
Any cheerleaders on the plane?
Tsai, you can be the mascot—Tsaiko Warrior 🙂
John Veneri’s book says, “The Defector”.
Hmmmmmm….
Nick Rolovich’s profile on Hawaii Athletics:
http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7037
“…threw for 1,548 yards and 20 touchdowns in his last three games…”
Hoa, das one negative Pordagee on the radio dis morning. Lose fight listening to all of dat opala about UH being spewed on da radio. He must feel about himself “being right” with his losing predictions about UH having one hard time at 2-5.
But, the story about LB Makani Hewa-Kaleiwahea was uplifting. Nice young man, with character.
Go Warriors!!
Sorry. Didn’t mean to offend. That should be “Portuguese.” I don’t want Lee Cataluna coming after me. Frank De Lima when learn his lesson.
Comment from Makani Hema-Kaleiwahea:
“If you’re a negative person, you’re going to live a negative life. I not only try to live a positive life, I try to teach others to live like that, as well.”
Opps. Sorry, it’s Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea. My bad.
UH 12
NV 55
#32 All portagees are negative, that’s just how we are. Haha
Deja vu. My Governors with goose egg at half time.
San Diego St. winning over Utah St, so far, 34-14 in 3rd Qtr. That’s the Utah St that blasted Boise St.
UH O NV 39
While disappointed hoping for a turnaround. 🙂
San Diego St. boring run, run, run, and run some more offense over Utah St. 48-14. Ol’ man river HC and DC Rocky Long, he jes keeps rollin along.
Bobby Curran, you are a credit to your profession.
Matt Millen was annoying me so much, I turned on ESPN 1420, but the play-by-play wasn’t in synch with the telecast.
You presume television is better than radio, but if you don’t want to ante up the money for pay-per-view, or go to a bar, once you get settled into the broadcast, radio works out just fine.
I know what an incomplete pass looks like.
I listen to “The Bobby Curran Show” during basketball season.
I really don’t want to be reminded of the latest Hawaii football loss.
If thats a United 747 you should see the 1st class seats. Even better!
let’s face reality – odds on UH winning at Reno – zero to none!
prove me wrong!!!!!!!!!!!
negative – yes, but it’s reality for us UH football fans – yep, you can find the entire family at Windward Mall food court around 9:55 am
Bobby Curran always looks stone. Maybe wife Jo cooks up funny kine brownies for his long flights to the mainland 6 times a season.
Great story about Rainbow Cliff on the ESPN1420 site.
http://pro.kkea-am.tritonflex.com/common/page.php?id=751
Interesting watching Mililani freshman quarterback who is playing in place of injured Milton. Throws a nice ball. But what you expect? His dad is Garrett da BYU killer. I wonder how he will do against Kahuku? Probably the best defense he will be seeing so far.
Imho, Bobby Curran is always professional and objective, and think that sometimes people misunderstand that and draw the wrong conclusions about him. But you kinda know that deep down, he bleeds green and loves Hawaii. Dunno about funny kine brownies, but brownies and chocolate chip cookies soooo good with milk. Especially on a plane ride to the mainland.
It’s game day.
GO WARRIORS!

Wonder if the scribe who referred to SDSU as mediocre after UH loss still holds that same opinion. Pumphrey is another version of Marshall Faulk and SDSU is and has been a well above average team this year. So now let’s go out and beat the Wolfpack!
I didn’t know Rainbow Cliff was…
When I was a little kid, I went to all the games.
It didn’t matter that they lost the majority of the time.
These guys were my idols.
I remember driving to my aunt’s house in Mililani, and being so psyched because Clint Neal scored a point.
Looking forward to following the UH-Nevada game on radio today. Too bad time marches backwards for customer service when there isn’t competition. Oceanic offered streaming for a reasonable fee ($10 or so, I think) for the 2012 since … but not since. I get that they want to charge the bars and clubs big bucks for PPV, but it would be good to see an affordable online option. Let’s Go Bows!
Looks like Utah state got caught up in a trap game or San Diego state is really that good. Might have an nfl camber running back in Pumphrey.
Former U of Miami players like Bernie Kosar and Warren Sapp complaining about the team’s performance. Mark May just made a great point – instead of complaining, why not help them?
GOOD POINT…EL BURRO…
the problem is…u can’t help ne one that does not want help…pakiki head…not going to help..just look at our coach n u can see the same problem…
And..they plan to manage the clock 2 day from the opening kick-off…..by run…run…pass…punt…
Remember when von apple was here… he would not let former players etc..in locker room…weights room etc…while this coach is way different… continually fight , ranting etc..with coaches n officials…will not achieve wins..in the win column at all…
LK, thanks for the link on Cliff Sanchez. Very inspirational.
Wonder why we did not offer and hire him as our basketball coach.
