Reno — It’s another must-win game … for both Nevada and Hawaii.
The Warriors, who practiced at Hug High yesterday, had to adjust to today’s early start. Instead of separate breakfast and pre-game meal, it was lumped into one buffet.
But, like all games, it began with the morning walk:

My guess is based on the fact that we have not put a great product on the field at home and especially on the road…We have scored a whopping total of 27pts on the road in 4 games and all of those points came against a porous defense…I hope the Warriors turn it around today and get the W but I can’t go against facts…sorry if my guess makes me less of a fan cause I can’t drink the proverbial Kool aid any longer

I wish the Warriors well in trying to control and win the game using a “running attack”, but, IMHO, they do NOT have the personnel to be successful to win the game.
Defensive secondary will give up too pass completions and TDs.

On paper, UH v Nevada should be an pretty even matchup, however, UH has a horrendous record when playing in Reno so it’s like Nevada is already up 7-0 before the game kicks off

Kemp’s catch looked like a TD to me too but still fire the head coach. We need change now. Do not wait any longer. I cannot even get excited about making predictions because it’s the same result…another loss. I’m tired of hearing the same old excuses: we need to do better and try harder…what we need is a new head coach with a vision.
I hope the powers that forced Chow on us are proud of themselves. Thanks foe giving Chow a chance at our expense.

During Chow’s announcement of being UH’s next coach in December 2011, maybe he meant to say”we are going to chase championships from the back of the line.” I think UH will honor his contract. I don’t believe 0 – 13 season would have made a difference. Chow is here to stay for his 5th year.

It’s another lost again! It’s really seriously look like the University of Hawaii football program. They’re will be in up 2-11 this season. Worst part of it if university of hawaii still keep Norm Chow they will be 0-13 next year!. And the University will be losing more money!.
IMHO:
1] offense seemed to start and play with “fire in their bellies” for the first qtr and slowly lose it until the 4th qtr when they played like going through the motions – WHY????????? — is it the players themselves? or, the coaches be it play calling or arguing with the refs or ?????
2] UH punts the ball and it’s picked up on the 4 yard line — ref puts the ball on the 5 yard line – what’s up with that and all the NONE calls for pulling Witek’s helmet off or interference or whatever – yea, yea, I blame the refs for changing the direction of the game to favor Rena — you believe what you want!!!!!!!!!
3] clock management by UH really and totally SUCKS!!!!!!!! no time out to slow Reno’s momentum – Chow, why are you saving the time out?????? so you can call them when the game’s outcome is determined????????? to prolong your stay as HC????????????

if Matlin keeps Chow after the loss to the Air Force, then UH is doomed to it’s 4th consecutive losing season and Chow will finish his 5th year with UH — so sad — how deep will the fan support dwindle??????????????? by numbers and donations?????????

You know things are bad when people start to use “mathematically” when talking about the team.
This one is on Chow, coach must keep there composure. Nice start but can’t finish, and Wittek again can not finish, should have played Wosely. Sanchez is the team MVP!

I still think that Woolsey is the better quarterback and should start. Wittek has played one good game vs a team ranked 200th with a 1-6 record (UC Davis). Woolsey had much better games than Wittek last year and in his one start this year.

Have to admit that Wittek didn’t have it today. He no longer deserves to be the starter. Ikaika suit up!
The Wolfpack, not the Rebels, gained most of their yards on pass action with the quarterback throwing to the right flat NUMEROUS times. Why weren’t we able to solve that problem? Didn’t anyone notice? disappointing. Another win that was squandered. The head coach cannot demand that his player show discipline when he
loses it with the refs which turns into 3 point for the foe. Again, disappointing.
All that can be said is that this is indeed a sad state of affairs. There comes a time when one just has to accept that things are bad and have little chance of getting better. We have descended from an interesting high flying and exciting team to a boring and chronicically losing team. I don’t know coach Chow personally but I am very fatigued with his tirades. He presents himself in public as a man of dignity and principles but behaves like a child indulging himself in tantrums on the sidelines. If this truly his his nature then he is not fit for a leadership position. If this behavior is a result of the extreme and unrelenting failure and frustration he has faced then he better quit because he will have a stroke soon. Over to you Dave Matlin…..it is time to save coach Chow (and us) from himself.
I love Ikaika as a person. Gutty, tough to play injured last year. But I think he was given too much credit for his performance last week. He was MIA in the 2nd half and New Mexico is a bad team.
#57 I can appreciate the scientific research and reason. The player has a year to plan and prepare his body to perform for battle. The goal is to perform at 100%. Not always the case. Injury or sickness can hinder the athlete. But nonetheless they are their to perform.
That depends on ability, performance training, preparation and mindset. No matter. Game Day is THE day. Perfect example, Micheal Jordan in 1997 playoffs scored 38 points while battling a 103 fever. He had the flu. Watching him in the game only made me appreciate his gift even more. His performance was based on mind over body. Making his body do something it didn’t want to do and still perform.
I say all this because that is the type of athlete he is. Above average, highest level, gifted athlete. There are the above average athletes who train, perform, and execute at that level.
However, unfortunately as stated on national TV vs OH and WI. Something we lack at UH. However, you have a HC trying to execute plays based on that type of athlete. No, change your plays based on what they can do. They may not be creme of the crop but they can still perform with the right coaching.
A performance coach knows how to get his athlete to perform even if not at 100%. However, trying to play with that NFL or USC mindset with players who are not at that level only proves you are the nail and not the hammer.
Looking forward to the half time show next week. Halloween always brings an entertaining band performance. As for the Rainbow Warriors, the coaches have lost the players. They are going through the motions, but are speaking with their performance. The fans now DO NOT CARE!
I support the UH Football program but the time is now not later to let Coach Chow go. This team needs a huge dose of change to breath again. This team is a reflection of our coach and we need our players to let go of all this tension. AD Matlin has done a disappearing act so far. He needs to be accountable and have the guts to make a change now and not later.
Something tells me Matlin has to wait for the end of the season to fire Chow. Any earlier and UH might not be able to exercise the $200K buyout. To do so now may guarantee Chow the full $550K. I can wait, but Matlin has to be looking for a replacement now. Right after the final gun, Chow should be let go

I heard sports repeatedly that universities don’t just keep coaches for their last contract year, that they either extend them or fire them. Recently, I heard it reported that Coach Chow’s buyout for his last year was $200K. And season ticket revenue drop off must be much more than that. It seems that the AD and Manoa Chancellor would have an easy time justifying making a coaching change as soon as Hawaii no longer has the chance for a winning season. If I wanted to make a coaching change, I would discuss the financial puts and takes. If I wanted to keep the status quo, I would remain mute on the financials. I haven’t heard UH talking about the steady annual decrease in season ticket sales recently …
We don’t know how to win or is it we find ways to lose. We don’t play well after we take the lead nor do we play well when playing catch up.
I wonder how many snaps our key defensive starters had going into Reno’s last scoring drive. It seems to be a pattern where we can’t get that key 4th quarter stop.
All I know is the last four years have been difficult. Thank you to our UH Football Team. You have been outstanding! Chow suck it up, and leave. Time to get new blood on the field. probably because having a lame duck coach on his last year with the writing on the wall will really screw up recruiting. you will basically set up your team for failure in the recruiting game (which sets it up for long term failure in all phases) because recruits may not want to play for a coach who will be out the door in 13 games and a team whose program will be unstable and in serious flux.
example: what if chow was recruiting you as a receiver and promised to open up the offense and that you will be a starter for his fifth and probably final year, and after you play a single season, UH hires a triple option coach who plays caveman football?
Therefore, matlin would be an idiot if he doesn’t fire chow at the end of the season.

interesting thing is Baylors quarterback suffered a fracture in one of his neck bones and will be replaced by a freshman. They have a bye week coming up.

No matter what, it’s goin to cost UH $750k to remove Chow.
Scenarios:
1. Chow is fired now (or when UH is mathematically can’t make 7 wins).
Name one of the assistants interim HC and maybe he can push some buttons that Chow isn’t hitting. The Real importance is to get the Head FB Coaching job opening posted early. You probably won’t get great candidates during the season, but at least UH will have plenty of time to vet candidates as they come in.
Positives:
– Maybe interim coach can light a fire emotionally. I think this team is good enough to win, but much of their issues are mental. Maybe a new voice can make things happen.
– UH can post HC job opening sooner and start vetting prospects sooner so it’s less of a mad dash in December to sign somebody.
– Best case scenario is if a new coach is named immediately after the final game so he has 2 full months to piece together a recruiting class.
Negatives:
– Viewed as giving up on the season (I would argue the opposite)
– Public perception of buying out another coach for $750k
Cost:
$750k (Need to pay Chow 2015 $550k salary + 2016 $200k buyout)
2. Chow is allowed to coach remainder of year.
Positives:
– Maintains continuity of staff
– Recruiting can continue uninterrupted (although I’m sure recruits are already aware Chow may be out the door)
– Doesn’t give perception of giving up on players
Negatives:
– Continuation of level of play. Just seems like for every stride they make forward, they keep making mental errors that cost them.
– Doesn’t solve the problem of getting badly outcoached after halftime. UH has consistently bogged down in the 2nd halves of each MW game.
– Firing late makes finding a new coach a frenetic process because you lose precious recruiting time when you are still searching.
Cost: $200k buyout. However, the true cost is still $750k because he still gets paid for working 2015.
Unless I’m off base on the terms of the buyout, the true cost to UH is $750k. The only difference is if Chow is on the sideline or not.
With UH athletics, I don’t think Matlin calls the shots. Like the previous AD, if something goes wrong they use the AD as the fall guy. UH admin tells the AD to resign because of family reasons and they get rid of him without a firing.
It’s just a matter of time before Matlin gets the same treatment by the higher ups. It’s a nice system to keep the status quo.
Go and read Dave Reardon’s blog on how UH admin stonewalled him when he asked them the tough questions regarding financial accountability after the Arnold settlement.
Watching Washington game. They said Peterson has only 21 loses in 10 years. Then I was thinking Chow has 20 loses in 2. 29 in 3.
#117 .. $550K is a sunk cost. The question for me is whether Chow is back for the 2016 season. IMO the longer UH doesn’t make it clear that he is leaving, the higher the likelihood that Chow will be back in 2016 with a 3 or 4 Win season in 2015.

Not having a running game placed a lot more pressure on the offense forcing them to become more predictable and one dimensional.
Not being able to stop Nevada’s running game hurt. Their success in running the ball made their second half offense more versatile.
That was the difference.
118. Good point. Most UHADs are just fall guys for the BOR, the President, and the Chancellor’s incompetence and meddling in athletic decisions.
Looking back at it, Ben Jay is one of the rare AD resignations (aka passive aggressive firing) where the AD was let go without being involved in failed Football and/or failed Men’s BB coach hires. Usually ADs are fired over bad hires in the money sports.
Ben Jay never had the qualities necessary to run UH Athletics and was apparently blindsided by the back room politics , but he certainly was dealt a terrible hand when he took over. He basically inherited a failure FB coach and inherited what eventually ended up as the Gib Arnold mess.
Chow not being a quitter is what got him to be where he is now in his profession. He holds a doctorate in Education. He has children who are successful in their respective fields and he has family who loves him. By all accounts, he is successful in all areas of his life except one area. I don’t know him personally. But, I think he did okay in his life.
However, in 4 years, he has shown little to no aptitude to knowing how to turn around the UH football program. A 10 W – 35 L record as a HC says it all. I guess not all coaches are meant to be HC’s.
Early in year three of his contract, I kind of felt UH will honor his contract. I still do. Maybe the next UH warrior football HC will be more successful.

Optimism, in some cases, can be a psychosis, but at least Hawaii held the lead for awhile in their last two losses.

Norm Chow is not a loser, he is.
UH as an institution proves again and again that it is a dysfunctional organization. The string of embarrassing missteps is long and rather pathetic. I am not sure if it is possible for our football team to be consistently successful while being part of such place. Nonetheless there are times when even a dysfunctional institution can do the obvious and make the move that is necessary. It is time for coach Chow to go. His record and the team’s performance suggests again and again that he cannot create a structure that develops talent, that he is not a good judge of talent in recruiting, that he is not a good judge of talent in coaches (actually thought he might have gotten it right this year), that his game management is very poor, he cannot make the needed adjustments as the game progresses and that he uses most of his game time energy in the useless exercise of jawboning officials and embarrassing himself (and us by proxy). As 8o8 suggests above he has met with success in his life and this is commendable. But he is a very unsuccessful head coach and has driven a program that many of us care about into a very bad place. For this he must be accountable and other successes in his life are not relevant to this. I like the way he has focused on his team’s education. This is good. The rest is very bad.
#117. As I understand it Chow gets his full salary for 2016 if he is fired before the end of this season. The most likely scenario is he is allowed to finish the season but it is announced before the season is over UH will execute the buyout clause for 2016. The national media will make it known immediately that the Hawaii job is open.
The most important factor in Hawaii’s hiring process is what they set as the closing date. Don’t expect a new coached to be named for at least two weeks after that date. Too bad we don’t have the resources to target 2-3 capable coaches and encourage them to apply. I don’t think UH can straight out offer the job to someone.
thanks to the UH band who took a small pep band up to Reno to cheer on the band and play for the fans who also made the trek. they’ve been fundraising to help pay their way up there.
Let’s see what the SA does to spin another horrible game. Maybe Chow forgot his glasses at home so he couldn’t see what was going on.

Yes, Norm Chow is NOT a quitter. It started when he wouldn’t quit Utah until after their season was over even though he was already hired by UH (maybe wording in his Utah contract prevented him from doing so), thus had a very late start in hiring a staff, so ended up hiring his friend who was already retired for a couple of years as OC and also hired graduate assistants to be position coaches or gave them the responsibility of a position coach. His recruiting started off late so he couldn’t have a good year in recruiting. He wouldn’t adjust to whatever talent he had from the previous regime because he wanted “his” system. He even had some of the former coaches’ players sitting in the stands, including the projected starting qb, during home games because they’re not going to play and only would get in the way. A few of his former player transferred out and are doing very well at other schools. He got a qb, who hadn’t played in 4 years from a program that was not very successful, to transfer here and start in his 1st year and he wasn’t very good that year. He’s had numerous staff changes during his 4 years here including a few defensive coordinators and even had a spell with no offensive coordinator. He is not very successful as a head coach, losing games to some very weak MWC teams and I don’t think we had a victory against a winning DI program. What is his 4 year record here minus the DII teams? His offense is ranked at the bottom or very close to the bottom. He is 69/70 years old. I don’t think he will quit. Maybe he is waiting to get the maximum payment age of social security. Coach, thank you for giving it your best try and you can be proud of the high gpa or graduation % of your athletes but I think it is time to retire.
By not resigning, the HC is now the most despised sports figure in Hawai’i history since Herman Frazier. His honor and dignity is now on the line and he must act or be psychologically exiled from the 808 forever. UH is a cluster f%$k. SNAFU. The AD is doomed. Look at the smoke trail of those running the institution. Starts at the top of the State and all the way down to Bachman. No one is accountable.
Ala Wai is right. The Star Advertiser poll tomorrow should be if Chow is more hated than Frazier, Arnold, or Dobelle.

Chow is most definitely not a quitter.
Quitters don’t make it very far in any profession. Quitters end up with menial jobs or homeless.
All is fair in talking about job status in relation to performance, but personal attacks are off limits. Keep it clean.
I have no ill will towards Chow. People should be angry at the process that was used to hire him. The process is flawed. The final choice is suppose to be in the hands of the AD but it is not. It seems the final choice can be influenced by a person or group of people with enough political clout to exert pressure on the UH administration to advise the AD who he should pick. We all know Donovan wanted someone else but somehow changed his mind and went with Chow. If UH is going to use an advisory committee to screen applicants Matlin should be free to pick the members of the committee himself. In Hawaii too many people are beholden to someone who helped him/her get his position in Government. As a government employee I wonder if Matln is beholden to anyone for his job.

I think Von Appen is less hated now since time has passed. But, even when he was losing during the 0-12 season, most knew there would be an end to his coaching era at UH. With Chow, it feels like there is no end in sight.

138. Gib actually let UH off easy by settling for $700k. I read the contract and by the letter of the contract, UH absolutely owed him the $1.4 million.
Point 1: It’s the stupidest termination clause ever agreed upon… EVER. I agree that terminating “without cause” should include a bigger buyout, but come on man, why would you ever agree to a pay a fee equal to the total amount of dollars earned from beginning of employment to termination date?
Point 2: More stupid than point 1, UH failed to understand (or read) the consequences of firing “with” or “without cause”.
Point 3: This is not UH’s 1st time agreeing to stupid termination terms… Greg McMackin’s contract actually had no “buyout” clause for early termination. For example, Norm Chiw has a $200k buyout should UH not retain him for the final year of the contract. When it became apparent UH was going to let Mack go, by contract, UH was suppose to pay the entire value remaining on contract, which was his entire $1.1M salary. Mack decided to be nice, “retired”, and settled on $600k or so.
Mack was on the hot seat following being humiliated in the 2008 bowl game, the derogatory comments & suspension, and failing to make a bowl in 2009, but when UH realized they would have to cough up $3.3M for the remaining 3 years on his deal, UH backed off pretty quickly.
St. Tony. I think Coach Fred was the last coach of a major sport that was solely the pick of the AD.
Me actually liked fred as a person … n sum things he did…like the weird music he chose to pump in the locker room or his office (?)…n have to remember..he was on Mr. Walsh staff of the 49ers…
Loosing coaches…just not have the sales ability…to sell his/hers players on his/her program…for ne sport…for the most part..is why this happens…

Love it! Sam Spangler just said that UH is a poorly coached team. It seems more and more people are starting to call it like it is. Those of us who have been calling for a coaching change have been scolded here enough already.

For those who are wondering, this is what Chow’s contract says:
This Agreement may be terminated by the University at any time without cause upon ninety (90) days written notice to Coach. In such event, University will pay Coach as liquidated damages, a lump sum amount equal to (1) Coach’s total remaining base salary through year four of this Agreement, and (2) $200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand dollars) for year five of this Agreement. University shall pay this amount to Coach within thirty (30) days of termination. University’s payment to Coach of the total of the sums above is Coach’s exclusive remedy. University shall not be liable or responsible for any liquidated damages or loss of any collateral business opportunities or any other benefits, perquisites, or income from any source that might ensue as a result of University’s termination of this Agreement without cause, and is in lieu of any and all other legal remedies or equitable relief and without regard to any compensation Coach may earn in mitigating his/her damages.
So my understanding is, if Chow were to be fired now, UH would be on the hook for the remainder of this season’s salary, plus $200k. Essentially, what Former UH Athlete said at 5:38 p.m. Only difference is UH would have to pay a lump sum, rather than spread it out over twice-monthly paychecks.

Air Force beat Fresno St 42-14. They lost to Michigan St 35-21.
It would be nice to see UH beat the Air Force Falcons. When UH played Navy, they had a hard time stopping their option attack. Unfortunately, seeing UH at 2-7 is a strong possibility.
Will there be a change at HC for UH after Saturday’s game?
It would help the UH football program get a fresh start and a running start for next year if that happened. But, with UH admin, who knows.
Sometimes it’s good to press the restart button. With UH though, it get’s costly pressing the restart button. I hope the higher ups read the contract they give the next coach to sign. Or, find someone to read it to them.

You can’t just bring back Chow to coach his final year, you have to extend his contract. Can’t have a lame duck coach.

Tired of losing, never tire of supporting no matter what. No excuses-the MW officials are incompetent. Several really bad holding calls ignored, vaulting/launching, ignored. The replay bears out a score by Kemp and a denial of the first score by Nevada. The replay will not make the call by the official in doubt or overturned but had they called it the other way it would have stood period. Last week the call by officials I am sure was waived because Brodie raised up, had he not raised up where would the defender landed? Right on top of him. The calls are sickening period. Poor execution and spotty play coupled with some good play just won’t get them where they want to go. I do know one thing there were open receivers when the passes were thrown into traffic for int’s. All in all I will not waiver in my support of the program-gonna make the trek to UNLV and yell my a** off for a victory!
