Sand update: no Koelsch; and Molokai off
Got a chance to chat a little bit with coaches and players at the new courts.
At the moment No. 1 looks like Tiegs-Taylor according to Hall and Alvarez.
They’re looking to see who can partner with Spieler.
They’ve had a few minor injuries and the flu bug which has hurt making decisions about the pairs. Both Tiegs and Schreiber weren’t at practice because of illness.
Koelsch has decided to stick to indoor so she’ll no longer be playing sand.
The big surprise has been Maglio according to both Hall and Alvarez. They said that she has to potential to be at No. 2 and then maybe No. 1 eventually. They were thinking of red-shirting her but apparently they’ve decided she’s ready to play this year.
Maglio said she’s enjoying it. She’s jump serving and says she thinks playing sand will help her indoor game. Said she played a little beach in Canada.
Taylor was cleared to practice today, a day ahead of what she predicted. She said she was feeling fine, that it was a minor sprain.
Shoji dropped by to watch practice. Asked about the Molokai clinic. He said they couldn’t make it work this spring.
Wow at Emily Maglio. If she is in contention to play for one of the top pairs , she must be better than I thought.
Like Nikki Taylor surprised last season, hope Maglio does as well.
1. well it wouldn’t be this year that she’s paired that high. it’s her future potential. but they are pleasantly surprised by her. and, as you say, very much like Taylor surprising last season.
Oh I see I misunderstood and thought Emily was going to be in top pairs this season. It would still be a nice surprise to see her in pairs 4 or 5, since I did not think she would get to play much at all this season.
Too bad about Kendra, I think she has the setting and hitting and all around game to be really good in beach volleyball in 2-3 years.
I hope Jeff Hall is still pursuing the Norwegian player Benedicte Masseide. She looks like she is really good and hopefully can make it next season.
Any idea if they will hire a replacement for Meyer for this season or just wait for next year?
I think it would be amazing if they could get Kevin Wong for the part time assistant job, Although I know it’s a long shot.
alas no moloka’i. adolpho must be disappointed. i know i am. too bad kendra is out of sand. thought that she and baby g loves sand and planned to be great sandbows. but oh well, sandbows lost some really good ones like ginger and so.
didnt know meyer is no longer asst coach??
3. no on the Euro player. one of the problems is most ask for full rides and sand vb is splitting most of the six they have among the 13 sand-only players. Also sounded like she wasn’t that interested in UH and that she may not play in the U.S. after all.
Not sure why you’d think they’d wait until next year? IF you read what I posted, and wrote in the article, they are supposed to post the vacancy this week. (no up yet) and hope to hire quickly. But it depends on who applies and how long the screening process takes such as background checks.
Koelsch decided she wanted to concentrate on indoor and on school. trying to play two sports is a big time commitment. and there are days when the indoor players have 2 workouts, one for indoor and one for sand.
4. don’t know if KW’s applying. It pays about $1,000 a month. Alvarez has said he doesn’t want it. Probably would lose money if he did. He’s a financial planner and says the time he currently gives volunteering is about what he can do.
5. were you planning to go? I’m sure there’s a lot of disappointment on both sides of the Ka’iwi Channel but they couldn’t make it work.
5. posted monday night and ran in tuesday’s paper

Good for Kendra. At least she know what she can and can’t handle. Hope they have a good turn out for the spring match when the play Texas. Another 6 months before indoor starts.
