It would be interesting if the Big West added Sac State. The Hornets were interested in doing so, as was Cal State Bakersfield.
But any new team that joins the Big West doesn’t get the Hawaii travel subsidy. which has cooled the interest somewhat.

Congratulations to Aven Lee, Sac State has a lot of potential! I think Sac State had a very young roster this year. If I recall correctly, they had no seniors to honor on senior night. Aven is definitely the type of Assistant Coach that can help strengthen a program. I can’t wait to see her rise to the ranks of a Div I head coach.
Her good friend who was also the DOVO at Nevada & a native of Salt Lake on Oahu, Ren Cefra, left Nevada to become the assistant at Division II Minot State in North Dakota. Cefra coached with ASICS Rainbows & Quicksets VBC and several different schools including Moanalua, Radford, St. Francis, etc.
Not sure if it was posted anywhere, but there will be a name familiar to UH volleyball fans getting another Assistant Coach position in the Big Sky Conference.
If Hawaii offered travel subsidy to Sacramento State, would that entice them to join? After all, didn’t they pay travel subsidy to UOP? Sacramento State could fill in the shoes of UOP. It would make travel so much easier for Hawaii since Sacramento and Davis are only 20 miles apart. They wouldn’t have to fly between Davis and Riverside.
On the other hand, Bakersfield is more isolated, not a good idea for them to join. They are already in another conference.
On another road trip Hawaii would have to visit three cities. Long Beach, Fullerton and Irvine would make a good trio as they are in close proximity to each other. Northridge and Riverside would make another double for a road trip. Is this a viable possibility? Or Northridge might be partnered up with Hawaii for road trips as in the past before UOP left the conference.
2. The agreement between Hawaii and the Big West included a stipulation that any team that joined the Big West after Hawaii did would not receive the the travel subsidy.
UOP was already in the league when Hawaii joined so they got the subsidy.
The Big West rotates its travel partners.
Sac State in the Big Sky for most sports
Bakersfield is in the WAC
My understanding that another reason about Sac State is that UC Davis is against it.
Reminds me back in the day of when the Pac-8 wanted to expand. UCLA and SC were against adding any of the Cal State schools such as Long Beach, Fullerton and San Diego State, because they would be recruiting against schools with lower academic standards and the aforementioned schools could get players ± particularly in football — into school that the LA schools couldn’t.
the Pac-8 decided on the Arizona schools, which left the WAC. And it opened the door for Hawaii to join the WAC.

Do you think the Big West should expand or do you think its fine as it is now? I don’t really know much about either school and how well their different sports teams do, but I don’t think they should expand just to have more teams.
I think adding a school would make sense so that the schedule is fairer and Hawaii being the lone wolf at times doesn’t continue to happen Shoji said he has told the Big West that he agreed to it for one year, and not a long term deal, but they were still the lone wolf last year in volleyball.
What has made it more unfair is that Hawaii will have to matches a week when the team that they play often UH is their only game of the week.
Of the two, think Sac State makes more sense. Perfect travel partner for UCD.
Bakersfield is just coming out of DII status.
I had a conversation with the WAC commissar a long time ago about perhaps adding U. San Diego to the WAC. So long ago that Harbaugh was coaching the Toreros. WAC commish said they’d welcome USD if they ever decided to move up their football program from the lower division. But think that USD is perfectly suited for the WCC with a lot of the other smaller private schools.

Yeah that does make sense. That lone wolf situation for the WVB is not fair. It would have been great if Pacific had stayed though. I thought the league was perfectly fine like that. Although can’t really blame them for leaving to the WCC. It is a better fit for them and it is a better conference.
