Making a great last impression
A week after Fred Ulu-Perry finalized a transfer from UCLA, the state’s top offensive lineman — Kapolei’s Toleafoa Sean Auwae — announced on Twitter he is taking an official UH visit on the final weekend of January. Auwae de-committed on verbal pledge to UCLA.
The Warriors are employing the time-tested strategy of the importance of a great last impression.
The final open recruiting day is Sunday, Jan. 31, before the dead period leading to signing day on Feb. 3. The Warriors’ plan is to host several local prospects that weekend. A bonus attraction is the Pro Bowl will be played on Jan. 31 at Aloha Stadium. The Warriors surely will use Pro Bowl festivities as stopping points on the recruiting tour.

Nahting finah den playin fo da aina!
Hakka you crack me up and put a smile on my face-tanks brudda. By the way we do say things or things like that in Chicago. Tanks is as normal as goin ova dere-southside talk for going someplace. Ova dere is like going everyplace-it is the most common destination on the southside “where you been” where you going, where you at…..always the same ting…… Ove der!!!!
Meant Haka- sorry
Alright Bows! Let’s get it!
Listening to Bobby Curran. He said we have roughly 18 scholarships available. Reason being Chow offered 1 year guys like Mouro Bondi who count against 2016. I hate to keep piling it on but Norm Chow is a bigger moron that I thought. Geez.
So we didn’t recruit Qbs or DL but we bring in 3 kickers/punters???
Talk about incompetence.
How does that make norm chow incompetent?!? When the biggest part of his game is kicking and punting?? Mvp Scott Harding and rigo Sanchez. Gotta keep those guys competing and getting better everyday
Is UH recruiting Kumoku Noa?
7. I hope you’re being sarcastic.
8. Pono. Unless we miraculously get more scholarships, lot of guys you think should be recruited won’t because of bigger needs. Ursua and Collie are slots with 3-4 years left that can supposedly play. Timoteo can play slot or outside. He was the main priority.
Right now, it seems like OT, DT, and a QB are the top priority. Can’t ever ignore DBs and pass rushers though. Right now, we lack ability to rush the pass so that should be up there too.
#10
Got it. Would be nice to get a WR that can catch consistently. Where’s the next Travis LaBoy?
Yes I was jeezy. You saying we only have 18 total or 18 after these 4 verbal we have?
12. That is what Bobby Curran said. I’m guessing he is pretty close so we definitely will have to be picky. Kinda sad weren’t not signing anyone tomorrow as of yet.
we’re not
11. Right here. But don’t get any hopes up because I read he doesn’t have grades. We’ll probably read about him as a 4 star JC recruit in 2 years.
http://www.hudl.com/athlete/4616219/highlights/311573386/v2
also kind of curious that no coach went to the mainland in the last couple weeks for in-home visits and in person recruiting.
The Warriors’ plan is to host several local prospects that weekend.
Hopefully the #1 Offensive Lineman (Eletise) along with Auwae..Maybe they both can be labeled #1..Actually all recruits labelled #1 (Herbig),(Tovi),(Malepeai),(Loveni Iosefa)…Is this more than several? Warrior On
Great news ST, keep them coming! In Rolo, we trust! Can someone do a crowd source fund to help Rolo with recruiting expenses–we need this to compete with the bigger schools with massive funds.
15 he on our radar??
It always perplexes me how such good athletes cannot make grades. Unless they have a learning disability it’s not asking much to get eligible for the NCAA clearinghouse. I always assume they just don’t have their priorities in check.
Before our staff ask the recruits to commit..Are they displaying their commitment to these recruits.
True Commitment:
He always stands by his covenant—
the commitment he made to a thousand generations.
19. No. Just someone I like a lot since Pono asked wheres the next Laboy.
maybe not making grades because of previous concussions beginning from pop warner days. MAYBE….always told hit em, hit em, hit em hard…MAYBE I’M WRONG
REMBER THIS…IT’S A VIOLENT SPORT…D ARANDA told me this in his office
GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!
Fred’s article today – Governor wants to “maintain” Aloha Stadium rather than spend money for a new stadium or improve it.
Why bother to “maintain” it if the prime tenant (UH football) is not being maintains? .
aloha everyone !! n#11 thank jeezy33 for the link !! the kid looks good !!
ooppss remember:-)
20 pono the kid came from another country his freshman year. Could be why his grades are low.
I have made up my mind and will not change it.
Many recruits have already thought this…but if you can somehow plant in them the belief in your heart
The man answered, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'”*
They may or may not change their mind but at least you left a great lasting impression
21… Yes, I’m pretty sure that the coaches assure recruits that they are committed to them for a thousand generations. That, and the promise of salvation if the recruit loves UH only and doesn’t flip to another team.
Lui Funga and Maa Tanuvasa would be great additions to the staff…
any info if the above names applied or not?
Lui for DC and Maa for DL
It’s Fuga, not Funga.
Just like Noga, not Nonga.
But when folks go to a party, dress up in white sheets and consumes lots of beverages, it’s a Toga party not a Tonga Party (not unless choke Polys were invited)
like smallwave and not bigwave…
BW have you seen Fuga coach? teaches the finer details of the position. Teach and not yell, like a lot of coaches do. Lui is the same as Aranda. Lui’s time is coming real soon. The HC who picks him up as DC will be rewarded.
I haven’t been keeping up with Fuga after his playing career. What does his coaching resume look like?
https://twitter.com/coachdavearanda
https://twitter.com/StephenTsai
I’m sure these two guys would have nothing but praise for Lui
Jeezy33
Interested in your opinion of Herbig?
Is he stanford good?
#25 wow great point.
Gov not supporting!!
Don’t get me started on Ige…. Promised to hold my tongue. Just don’t show up to UH event making like you are a big supporter of the program. He needs to prove to this football loving community that he supports UH athletics or just stay home and watch it on tv. (Since tickets are “too expensive” as he put it. Sorry couldn’t hold that one back. Hey the topic is headlining the sports page.
Go Rolo and Go Bows!
Like a lot of the naysayers and curmudgeons on the Blog, you gotta put your “money where your mouth” is…Obviously, if the Governor is not willing to pay for his season tickets, then he’s “all mouth” and no substance. Very disappointing…Just gotta wait till the next election.
2015, the Year of Disappointment. Disappointed with Ige, Disappointed with the Rainbow Warriors football team, Disapointed with the San Francisco 49ers, Disppointed with Colin Kaepernick, Disappointed with Central Florida and Kansas, Disappointed with Texas, Disappointed with GOP Presidential candidates, Disappinted with UH women’s scoccer, Disappointed that the GS Warriours lost a game, Disappointed with a lot of things, but there is always HOPE, today is another day, tomorrow is another day. HOPE, that Rolo and his staff can get some quality recruits, HOPE that our health is good, HOPE that the stock market will continue to grow, HOPE that families are together at this time of the year for Love and Hope. Happy Holidays Everybody! And Happy New Year!
37. He’s good. But not sure he compares to the linemen I see at Stanford. Wouldn’t surprise me if he opened up his recruitment at some point.
If my son had an opportunity to attend Stanford for FREE, no way he’s opening up his recruitment without giving it a year….but that’s just me.
#43 Pono, me too – although the ideal Stanford scholarship may be a golf scholarship like Mari Chun had. The dream of parents of junior golfers.
wanted to add this to yesterday’s numbers game
#17 Heikoti “Koti” Fakava – one of Hawaii’s most punishing runners
Surprised that Hawaii wasn’t able to land any of the JC recruits they had been after, hopefully we are alot more successful during the 2nd half of the recruiting season leading up until the 31st of Jan
You all really need hear what the governor and UH administrators have been saying: UH athletics is not important to them, and if people want them to exist, they need to dig into their pockets and maintain the college sports environment on their own.
What has been very clear in the recent coaching hires is they value character over winning, and grades over performance: nobody at the UH admin. level wants to be further, or again embarrassed by UH athletics department personnel. If the athletics department folds due to lack of community donations, they are clearly saying “so be it.”
The state i just not well situated to sustain DI sports. The demographics (aging population) and service-based state economy will adversely affect the tax revenue stream for the foreseeable future just as the burden of state outlays grows with each successive wave of baby boomer retirees.
What is worse is internal surveys are showing that tourists are increasingly disappointed with Hawaii vacations: it is seen as dirty, has escalating traffic woes, the homeless populations is surging, and the ever increasing urbanization of the skyline is turning Hawaii into a “mature” destination choice for potential visitors. The erosion of service industry dollars will be slow, but steady over the coming years, but the ultimate impact will be the same: a faltering economy that is incapable of sustaining current state economic outlays.
Furthermore, the downsizing of the military is projected to continue regardless of who is elected president next. This will further drag down the Hawaii economy as troops are pulled from the state with the national downsizing.
Since, the last governor was cast aside, in part, for his attempt to raise taxes to pay for the state’s burgeoning “to do” list, something has to give. And, UH sports are clearly the first on the chopping block.
For those trying to understand why Hawaii athletes have trouble making the grades for college, just a reminder that Hawaii is ranked last in the nation for academic abilities:
Specifically tallying:
IQ
2015 SAT scores
2015 ACT scores
The percentage of college graduates in the state, compiled by the Census Bureau

One comment from that article regarding Hawaii:
Ed Wagner
11/18/2015 6:34 PM GMT-1000
I’ve lived in Hawaii for over 30 years, retired 8 years, and can attest to the fact that our state is indeed the least intelligent one, as well as the most corrupt, like Chicago was in the days of Al Capone, not because of any school student low achievement test scores but because of the below average IQ of the Neanderthal-like politicians who are destroying our economy and ruining our educational system because they have been bought out by those who idolize money above all else in life, including the health of society and planet.
We have one of the worst, if not the worst educational system in the country because we have had a Democrat monopoly government since statehood. They are destroying Hawaii as much as Neanderthal Republicans in Congress are destroying the country.
“I don’t know what would be the priority for sports explicitly, but I know when I look at things that are on front of my plate, sports is not top of mind,” Ige said.
… “I believe he is right, the whole landscape is changing. I still think we need to analyze it a little deeper — it is not about getting rid of football or not, it is whether we want UH athletics or not,” Choy said, warning that not everyone at UH wants sports.
“I know there is tremendous opposition from the students,” Choy said . “They are getting hit twice, first for the tuition increases and then a doubling of the student athletic fee.” (from R. Borreca column today).
———————————————————————————————-
This brings into question whether the statement by some that there will always be football at UH into some doubt.
With the NLI signing period for JC transfers starting tomorrow, are there any “firm verbal commits” or do we just have to wait and see?
#39 and #47 – I too, was trying to bite my tongue about the governor’s comments (this is a sports blog), but I agree with both of you. Also, I think that if it came to a point where athletics was going to shut down, the governor would come riding on a white horse and save athletics. Then he would claim to be the hero, even if he was indifferent to it like he is now. Like I said before, one day, UH athletics will be the hottest ticket in town again, and there will be no shortage of those claiming that they saved the day.
I am voting for another gubernatorial candiate at the next election.
“”Iknow there is tremendous opposition from the students,” Choy said”. So he thinks he knows everything.
Does he know how the alumni of UH feels about football. And who votes? Do the students turn out to vote in the primary and general elections? Well I know some people who do vote religiously and they will not vote for some incumbents that are quoted in the article.
Lots of negativity. Enough to take an “Ainokea” attitude.
I was nice to read an uplifting article in Midweek about Wahine BB Coach Laura Beeman. I like her philosophy of, “It’s not OK to OK.” Says a lot about existing standards and raising the bar. It’s not OK to be just average and to accept mediocrity. If you want change, you have to go out and make change. Just wanting change won’t cut it.
Interesting insight in the article that alluded that Coach Beeman was not one to be “pushed around” by the Men’s basketball coach in things like accepting a lousy practice time or being treated like second-class citizen because the Men’s coach said so.
ASUH is an example of “poho” money.
CANT YOU SEE???? It’s you, the stupid voters of Hawaii!!!!
You keep voting in the same idiots, and then expect different results!?!?!?! That’s the definition of INSANITY! Let’s just vote anti-incumbent in this next election. The ones we end up voting for can’t do any worse than the IDIOTS that are presently holding office!
You have no one else to blame but your STUPID selves!
LIVE ALOHA, PLAY WARRIOR!
I don’t listen to anyone who calls me stupid
43. Open up meaning he doesn’t hear from Stanford coaches for a while believing Stanford might move on in another direction. Happens often. Ucla did it with Ammon Barker and Lakalaka. USC does it with a lot of kids.
Jeezy33… Have you seen the tape on OT/DT Piper. What do you think? The first thing I notice is his quickness.
http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3382980/highlights/297282382/v2?utm_expid=74649800-50.xVwcdGojSNiaNtQ6WnoKhQ.0
oops. I guess he’s just DT, not OT.
ST … heard S & C coach Gary Beemer has been dismissed. Any truth to this ???
59. Briefly. He looks good. But honestly hard to tell how good without watching games. I have stronger opinions about local kids that can check out few games. There are the exceptions though where some kids are just so much more freakishly athletic than the other players on the field that you only need to watch 1 minute . I trust the coaches on this piper guy tho if we can land him
Gov Ige should be ashamed for accepting “free” entry to certain UH sports with his public statements for not supporting athletics
he should have kept his comments private – no vote from me next time around.
63. … I don’t see any free tickets for Ige on his gift disclosure form, but i do see season football seats received by Bley-Vroman on Sept 2014 worth $375 and season parking passes worth $250 reported June, 2015.

63.
Linda Lingle was the first and last Republican I’m ever going to vote for.
I hope YouTube still has the video of Lingle talking to Triumph the Comic Insult Dog.
57, 63
Truth hurts, huh?
What’s your point Franny? That you’re somehow smarter than everyone? I doubt it. Smart people don’t call others stupid, so …
Yeah the truth hurts. I voted against our incumbent state rep and state senator since we moved into our current district 6 years ago because they’re terrible. So the truth is, who’s the stupid one now? Why should I or anyone listen to someone who calls us stupid for exercising our constitutional right to vote for whomever we want to?
Pride Rock…Rolo
How bout a package deal combo
Pick up Rich Miano as DC & Chad Ikei as SC… someone mention current SC might be out.. BUDGET…any word if Rich and Chad applied
maybe we can get the big boy from Kaiser..Eletise..Auwae…Perry…and current OL
to protect our QB Zwhalen ….okay that’s enough I’d best settle down and stick to my first choice Lui DC and Maa DL..
Most show up on this blog to offer opinion and insight about warrior football in a respectful and mature fashion. When there is disagreement it becomes interesting debate. A minority come here to proselytize and share their grand and extraordinary visions (sarcasm intended) in the realms of politics and religion. They are generally dull and add little except an experience akin to finger nails on a blackboard. Fortunately they tend to go away after awhile.
You miss the whole point.
My point is you keep voting for the same people….and then complain about them. It’s our constitutional right to vote, it’s true. But when you continue to vote for the same people who continue in their ways, does that seem smart to you?
But you go ahead and keep on voting, only to find yourselves complaining.
I’ve talked football here.
I was only commenting on what others have said about IGE and Choy.
Frannyk…. We all got the point but you’re so busy feeling superior that you ignored El Burro Sabio’s thoughtful post that contradicted your assumption about all of us stupid people.
Please pardon the run on sentence.
People may be right in their own eyes,
but the LORD examines their heart.
I searched everywhere, determined to find wisdom and to understand the reason for things. I was determined to prove to myself that wickedness is stupid and that foolishness is madness.
People who worship idols are stupid and foolish.
The things they worship are made of wood!
Their hearts are dull and stupid,
but I delight in your instructions.
To learn, you must love discipline;
it is stupid to hate correction.

I never once said I was superior or better. Your assumptions are misplaced at best. I never even mentioned your names…..but if the shoe fits……
75
Amen! There’s no refuting God’s Word!

Hmm, I see lots of criticism leveled at the politicians, some of it warranted, some of it not. I know a lot of them, most are really nice people.
Now, while it can be quite cathartic to get all of your frustrations out on them. Grumbling on some anonymous blog will do NO GOOD. You want something done? Write a letter that includes your real name, real address and tell them you vote. No phone calls, no emails, use good old fashioned paper.
Ever wonder how unions can get what they want in the legislature? It’s simple they can bring out volunteers and donate money. So you cannot afford to donate? I bet you can go out signwaving with your UH t shirt. This is where you can go and talk to them in person.
I know in Hawaii its often “no grumble” or “no make trouble”. If you don’t get in their face, well you open yourself up to other special interest groups who have no problem telling legislators how THEY feel. Leaving you to be grumbling on this anonymous blog again about how so and so “don’t do nuthing fo me”
I hear so many people grumbling about how “they should fund UH sports”. Tell them yourself. After all it is YOUR MONEY!
The shoe didn’t fit and you continue to ignore the evidence in front of you. In most of your posts you come off as abrasive or as trying to incite other posters so I’ll assume you enjoy trolling. I know you won’t miss me but I won’t be feeding you anymore.
46…don’t they have to be qualifiers first and foremost?
Well, what did u guys expect? Ige went to engineering school for goodness sakes! Aberclumsy was affiliated with the SDS (Students For A Democratic Society). Talk is cheap and Choy just stuffed his own mouth full of c___p! Heh Heh!
77
Whew!
Kaimiloa, El Burro Sabio, Arcumfortis, thank you for you’re posts. Don’t be discouraged… Just skip those posts. I do.

Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others. God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too.
Thank you also for your post

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
Frannyk–what does God does have to do with any of this….
The vast majority of people come to this site to banter and muse about UH Football, not hear pithy platitudes about party politics or theological proselytizaton.
79.
Can I buy a vowel, Winning?
I can’t figure out what c___p is.
I don’t have my 12 oz. can of Cranberry Red Bull to help me think.
Is Winning a reference to Charlie Sheen or the Santana song?
People go to the legislature for lots of things that would be good for the state– more boating facilities– docks, launching areas, berths for yachts and fishing boats, and more money for a symphony, and the arts. But the answer is usually the same– these things must be paid for by those who use or enjoy them and not by taxes. Sports at the University of Hawaii are much the same– those who enjoy them should pay through ticket prices and the state should not have to spend money to lower ticket prices or make contributions that private companies and fans should make. We are improving the product, and we have enjoyed subsidies from the state, now we need to show support and shell out more for tickets, and private donations. And those in charge of the university and athletics need to find ways to spend wisely and efficiently.
87. … There may not be enough money from fans out there to fully support the program. UH has to pay travel subsidies. Most mainland schools’ athletic programs are not self- supporting even though they don’t have to pay those subsidies.
#64
As part of the ‘deal’ for the stadium there is a governors ‘box’ for his/her express use on the press level in the end zone. No ticket is required, just a list of names at the main entrance and then an elevator ride up to the level.
