Countdown to 2016

The Warriors appear to have 15 remaining scholarships for the 2016 recruiting class.

On last night’s call-the-coach show, Nick Rolovich said there were 19 available scholarships when he was hired as head coach.

(UH is allowed to offer 25 initials each year. In most cases, an initial is a scholarship to a first-year Warrior. But a walk-on counts as an initial if he receives a scholarship before being in the program at least two years.)

UH’s 2016 initials include two players who were walk-ons for only a year and four blueshirts (players who entered the program this past season but whose scholarships count toward the 2016 class).

The Warriors also have reserved scholarships for three verbal commitments β€” quarterback McKenzie Milton, wideout Kalakaua Timoteo and defensive lineman Netane Muti β€” who will sign on Feb. 3.

Also, Fred Ulu-Perry, who signed a scholarship agreement with UH after leaving UCLA, is expected to count as a 2016 initial.

  2. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 8:32 am

Basically the ghost that is Norm Chow is still haunting us. Gus Lavaka, another Hawaii signee has signed with Oregon St. Not sure why chow thought it was smart to rebuild a team around players that might come back in 3-4 years but I guess that’s why he’s without a job and still getting paid.

Question. If guys that blue shirted decide to transfer, does it open up a scholarship?

  3. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 8:37 am

A blueshirt who transfers would open a spot on the total 85 scholarships but not on the initials because he already is receiving a scholarship. It’s a bookkeeping thing.

  4. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 8:39 am

Gus Lavaka didn’t cost UH anything because although he signed, he never went on scholarship, so he was never an initial. He would have joined UH this past season if he were academically eligible, but he wasn’t.

  5. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 8:39 am

    3. Absolutely ridiculous. Sad part is we didn’t even sign a full class last year.. Then we just award scholarships out that effect the future.

Not trying to be harsh but is it absolutely necessary to award a scholarship to a kicker that doesn’t play? Did we have to bring in a coaches son to better our program?

Need a little time to vent

  6. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 8:43 am

    4. Every year we sign a mission kid, it still hurts us from signing a full 25 scholarship class though. Either that or I’m missing something because we haven’t filled out a class under Chow ever. Reason why we never have depth, then they cry about it later and make excuses.

  7. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 8:44 am

Rigo Sanchez is one of the blue shirts. He turned out pretty good.

  8. Derek December 16, 2015 8:45 am

If I may ask, who are the 2 walk ons and 4 blue shirts are we talking about? I don’t want to assume or speculate. Names please. If Anguay gets a 6th year, is he on the 85 scholarship list? Mahalo!

  9. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 8:49 am

    7. So what? That’s 1 guy. I’ll be cheering when we stop celebrating our kicker and punter as one of our best players. Hitting 1 blueshirt or whatever its called is not worth whiffing on more. Its like shopping with your credit card. Seems nice at first till you have to actually pay your bill.

Do people realize we wouldn’t celebrate Scott Harding as much if our offense didn’t have to punt so often.

  10. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 8:51 am

    8. Cameron Hayes is one.

  11. cheepono December 16, 2015 8:52 am

Hawaii signs 16 kids last year.. How in the world does that happen and were stilling paying a debt? Agasiva didn’t even qualify, Borden is on his mission. Nothing makes any sense. But then again, that doesn’t surprise me one bit.

  13. jonj December 16, 2015 8:55 am

I’m guessing the Nebraska transfer kicker is another blueshirt. This Schollie math is crazy!

  14. warriorsanddolphins December 16, 2015 8:55 am

Whenever a new head coach comes in, he must evaluate the entire roster. Some players will not be retained and that can open up scholarships. Its not a nice thing to do but the head coach must do everything in his power to strengthen his team or he could have his walking papers in a few years.

  15. mileHIwarrior December 16, 2015 8:59 am

I’m happy to see we’re finally talking some actual football. Let’s keep this up yeah?

  16. jonj December 16, 2015 9:06 am

    #14
The way I’m hearing this, correct me if I’m wrong ST or jeezy, is that even if we drop some kids and free up a schollie, it doesn’t matter towards the initial count. So it would be better to award a 3Rd yr walk on player so it won’t count toward the next year’s initial count??

  17. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 9:10 am

    Jonj:
If a current player leaves, the number still will be 15.

  18. H-Man December 16, 2015 9:16 am

Rolo was on “Call the Coach” last night. He said that Zak Hill has control of the offense which will look like Eastern Washington’s. The tight end will remain part of the offense. Rolo liked the returning TEs and mentioned Torres as a good one. Rolo also said he is working towards filling the coaching positions perhaps over this weekend. He also mentioned that they need to recruit offensive tackles. The returning o-line has many guard types, but short on tackles.

  19. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 9:16 am

    Isaiah Bernard is another blueshirt.

  20. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 9:20 am

I think they always say 16 is a good working number for OL. Not sure why 16 and not 15, but it always seems to be 16. I think with walk-ons, there were about 21 OL a few years ago. That seems like a lot. That prevented decent guys like Kahi Lim from getting any playing time.

  21. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 9:24 am

Ban the blueshirt already.. If you’re good enough, sign within the 25 allotted scholarships. Never a smart idea to keep swiping credit card when you don’t need to.

  22. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 9:28 am

Telling a kid to come in and walk on with a guarantee he will be put on scholarship is absurd.
Signing 3 guys who kick the ball when you dont have 1 guy that can throw the ball makes me want to say things I cannot say.

  23. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 9:37 am

After Harding and Hadden completed their eligibility, UH needed to sign a punter and kicker.
Trifonovitch was signed as a punter in February.
Sanchez joined as a walk-on kicker with the understanding he would be considered for a scholarship if he won the starting job.
Bondi was signed as a kicker.
But then Sanchez won both the kicking and punting jobs, and then was awarded a scholarship.
In hindsight, UH probably would have been set with Trinovitch and Sanchez. But back in June, nobody knew Sanchez would be that good.

  24. warriorsanddolphins December 16, 2015 9:38 am

Saw on twitter that Isi Holani DT signed with Kansas. Local boy from Hilo. Thought we had a chance with Rolo taking over. Have fun in the freezing weather.

  25. Bigwave96744 December 16, 2015 9:41 am

Is Colton Goeas one of the red, grat, blue shirts?

Also isn’t it Elmer “Tahi” Lim III, of the famous Lim Family?

  26. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 9:45 am

No, Goeas would be a walk-on if he were to join.
I think he needed to work on some school stuff the past year.

  27. Bigwave96744 December 16, 2015 9:45 am

    What about Donald Lambert?
Also is Rashaan Falemalu still here?

  28. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 9:46 am

    23. It doesn’t matter though. You don’t need 2 bullets in the barrel to get it right at kicker. Kicking and Punting is 1 position where you can literally pull up a stat sheet, and see how accurate and how far a guy can kick. No other school recruits that way. This isn’t the 1st class we wasted a scholarship on a Punter and used the excuse of “we didn’t know Scott Harding could punt like that so we signed Ruben Guzman anyway” It’s a chain of stupid decisions compounding one another.

  29. jonj December 16, 2015 9:47 am

Jeezy the only way I see a blue shirt being worth it, would be towards a can’t miss player. Otherwise its a gamble not worth taking

  30. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 9:50 am

I also do not know the financial status of Anguay.
From what I understand, his scholarship was transferred from UH football to the athletic department this past summer. The Warriors then filled his football scholarship.

  31. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 9:51 am

Donald Lambert never met the requirements to join in January, so he’s no longer a consideration, from what I understand. (That’s my new default phrase.)

  32. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 9:51 am

    29. Can’t miss players don’t ever get offered a blue shirt. Guys like Chad Owens and Ashley Lelie walk on, earn a scholarship, and aren’t promised anything.

  33. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 9:52 am

Rashaan Falemalu was recovering a leg injury the past year.
I haven’t heard of him leaving the program.

  34. jonj December 16, 2015 9:53 am

St how many current scholarship players do we have?? For Rolos success I think he gotta have 25 open schollie available for next years class. Like jeezy said chow still haunting us today!

  35. jonj December 16, 2015 9:54 am

Jeezy what if fred ulu perry transfers late??

  36. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 9:54 am

Add DJ Riggins to the fire of brilliant moves.

  37. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 9:55 am

    35. I don’t understand your question. Fred Ulu Perry is a blue chip prospect that will count on our 2016 class.

  38. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 9:59 am

I think the intent of the blue shirt is to fill a need when there are no scholarships available.
If a scholarship was available, a player would not be blue-shirted.
Suppose you had enough cash to buy something. You wouldn’t use your credit card, would you?
UH had needs but no scholarships the past summer. So they used the credit card.
Do I think it’s a good idea to have credit-card debt? Probably not, but I have credit-card debt, so, who am I to judge?
Also, my LensCrafter prescription doesn’t come with hindsight.

  39. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 9:59 am

I can watch 1 Kaiser basketball game, and determine that I would rather sign Chance Kalaugher to a football scholarship who was featured in the Honolulu Star Advertiser over half of the kids Norm Chow recruited.

  40. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 10:02 am

    38. I’d buy that reasoning if that need was used to fill DT or QB. But that card will never be swiped for 2 kickesr. NEVER. The fact we were short on scholarships to begin with tells me we were screwing up big time from 2013-2014 seasons.

I am pretty sure Rolo is smart enough not to swipe the credit card too hard to effect our future.

  41. Waikapu December 16, 2015 10:03 am

jeezy33 bro you going give yourself high blood pressure and a heart attack. Go outside and smell the roses, the fresh air, be happy, no worry, beef curry. If that don’t work then a doobie, a drink and a tranquilizer might help!

  42. Bigwave96744 December 16, 2015 10:06 am

I feel this is the make or break spring camp for Beau Reilly.

  43. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 10:08 am

    41. 30 minute vent time. Just amazing what 1 CEO can do to the program you care about and support. When your staff doesn’t understand recruiting, this happens.

  44. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 10:09 am

    42. Its been broken. Sorry to say. Not everyone is meant to play QB at D1.

  45. Bigwave96744 December 16, 2015 10:15 am

#42, true and Rolo will have no problem telling that to a Scholie player

  46. haka December 16, 2015 10:16 am

What’s with all the kicking and crying? Move on already. Why pull a venting tantrum? What’s done is done. We get it. Why keep spitting on a man’s grave? Let’s remember, you are a self proclaimed recruiting genius and you would tear apart anyone’s failed recruiting in hindsight.

  47. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 10:18 am

    Jeezy:
I don’t think anybody disagrees that it’s not a good idea to recruit by credit card.
I know the coaches would like to have more scholarships.
But you do know that since nobody here is disagreeing, then we’re not sure whom you’re venting toward here.
I think we’re all befuddled as we read all this.

  48. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 10:18 am

    46. I’ll do what I want. What’s done isn’t done. Were stuck with this for this year. You can accept it if you want. I don’t.

If you wanna call it crying, fine, but you’re being a hypocrite by crying about my complaining. I’d rather kick and cry then be labeled a hypocrite.

  49. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 10:21 am

    47. I’m venting towards the fact that you’re trying to justify stupid decisions. Nothing personal. Kickers and punters are cool and all, but not the reason we continue to lose over and over and over. Then try to play the patch up game because of previous stupid decisions and now leaving Rolo with 6 less scholarships than he should have. 1/4 of our class is now taken away basically. Not a ideal situation for a new coach.

  50. WarriorNY December 16, 2015 10:29 am

    Great stuff…!

  51. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 10:33 am

    Jeezy:
I explained what happened. I resent you saying I’m justifying anything.

  52. haka December 16, 2015 10:34 am

Hypocrite? Whatever. We have what we have. Nothings going to change that. The failed staff you keep ripping is gone. We have a new head coach with different recruiting strategies. We would much rather read of who’s now on your recruiting radar than what was, that wasn’t.

  53. mileHIwarrior December 16, 2015 10:38 am

#46…As much as I agree with you cuz the horse is dead and the whole spilled milk analogy thing, it’s better than reading the other stuff that doesn’t belong on a football blog.

  54. mileHIwarrior December 16, 2015 10:40 am

#50…this is awesome stuff! I resent that ST is resented! Wait…am I justified in saying that? Maybe not…I RESENT ME!

  55. Traitmanz December 16, 2015 10:41 am

    ST:
Do you know if were still recruiting Keala Santiago?

  56. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 10:45 am

    mileHIwarrior:
    I appreciate your resentment.

  57. Jeezy33 December 16, 2015 10:46 am

    Haka,

Look. The topic of today is recruiting and how we have 15 scholarships remaining. Sorry if I’m not doing back flips based on the information that we only have 15 remaining. Norm Chow may be gone, but his incompetence still haunts us for at least another year. ignore my posts if you don’t like hearing the truth

  58. Jeezy33 December 16, 2015 10:49 am

    53. Haka wants to play the numbers game again I think .
I have good debates with friends all the time .. People think you have to agree with people to get along ..

  59. WarriorNY December 16, 2015 10:54 am

    @54
    lol….

  60. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 10:54 am

I’m sure we all wish we had more money.
But on a budget, it’s a matter of how the money is spent.
So, whom should UH use the 15 scholarships on? And why should those recruits go to UH?

  61. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 10:55 am

I’ll be really pissed if I find out Haka and Jeezy are the same person.

  62. mileHIwarrior December 16, 2015 10:59 am

Oh.. I’m all for watching a good debate Jeez. No worries.

With Clarke being from my neck of the Rockies, wonder if UH will consider recruiting out here. Kinda hard maybe, having to compete with Boulder, Ft. Collins and even the AFA but I think can.

  63. hitmanhart December 16, 2015 11:01 am

aloha and morning everyone !! ST what happend to Melvin Davis the last 2 games of the season ? was he hurt ?

  64. Old Diver December 16, 2015 11:02 am

    1. Many of us were sounding the warning bell four years ago that Chow’s recruiting was substandard compared to JJ or Mack.
    2. It’s water under the bridge.
    3. Rolo is going to need 2 or 3 years to be a contender in the MWC, let’s give him our support.

  65. haka December 16, 2015 11:03 am

Maybe you have a comprehension disorder…or maybe it’s because we’re not friends. Not sure what a numbers game is that you are referring to. Anyway, here’s to a great today and a better tomorrow for all UH athletics and our personal health. Gotta watch the blood pressure.

  66. Jonj December 16, 2015 11:04 am

Jeezy what I was trying to say is, what if “A” fred ulu perry type player comes along after the initial signing period. Do we Pass them up or blue shirt them.

  67. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 11:05 am

    Hitman:
    They said he was hurt.
Not sure what he had, but UH was down to two backs the final two games β€” Paul Harris and Ryan Tuiasoa. Well, three, if you count Justin Vele.
Not sure what happened with Pereese Joas, but he wasn’t a factor in final two games, either.

  68. haka December 16, 2015 11:06 am

ST, you need not be pissed!! LOL.

  69. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 11:09 am

    JonJ:
Jeremy Castro and Max Wittek came along after signing day when UH was out of scholarships. I think they ended up paying their own way for at least a semester, then going on scholarship. Same thing happened with Colt Brennan and, I believe, Dan Kelly.
Because of the way the world is aligned, Blake Muir and Ben Dew paid their own way for the 2011 spring semester, then went on scholarship in the fall.

  70. Stephen Tsai December 16, 2015 11:11 am

By the way, I’m undergoing an angioplasty on Friday, so, uh, thanks for the stress-free morning.

  71. Jeezy33 December 16, 2015 11:14 am

    66. They don’t come along though . And that’s why sometimes you save scholarships for that reason. Not so you can blue shirt and hurt next years class

  72. Jeezy33 December 16, 2015 11:16 am

Comprehension disorder ? I read your complaints about me just fine.

I will point you towards yesterday’s topic and you can play numbers game with the other happy jolly fans who only want to hear positive things and like being told the checks in the mail over and over

  73. MAKA December 16, 2015 11:20 am

    Word for the day. Resent.

Old proverb, better to be pissed if same person, then to be pissed on..

jeezy66, has 200 kids he want drafted. He does his homework, A+ for that.
Problem comes into play that we only have a limit of 25 a year, F- for that.
    And even less this year.
Maybe other word for the day should be “hypocrite” ?

  74. haka December 16, 2015 11:23 am

Ah, yes, the numbers game. We have 15 left. Who should we give them to? Any ideas?

  75. Jeezy33 December 16, 2015 11:24 am

Oh no., we have a maka and a haka… 2 buffoons at same time

  76. Jeezy33 December 16, 2015 11:25 am

    74. We gave Gouveia son a scholarship last year. Chris naeole kid should be next .. Family over everything !

  77. haka December 16, 2015 11:29 am

ST, here’s to a successful procedure on Friday.

  78. jonj December 16, 2015 11:29 am

Ok now I’m a little lost. If there are still available initials and someone comes in late on schollie. Does that count towards the initial or next class?? I ask this becuz I think jeezy is correct, we haven’t had a full class since chow took over.

  79. Sleezy22 December 16, 2015 11:31 am

Hey jeezy aren’t we buffoons too?

  80. MAKA December 16, 2015 11:31 am

Yes is correct, when you can’t defend yourself, just start by calling people names. Hypocrite comes to the forefront.

  81. Haka December 16, 2015 11:34 am

    So be it. Aloha.

  82. Jeezy33 December 16, 2015 11:37 am

oh no. I have to defend myself now? Or faka gonna come out with a screen name and start posting non sense now? The day is already getting better.

  83. Fanaddict December 16, 2015 11:41 am

No. 70, ru serious? If you r, then take care of yourself and have a safe great Christmas n New Year.

  84. hitmanhart December 16, 2015 11:46 am

    maka 73

Old proverb, better to be pissed if same person, then to be pissed on..

was it like this : it’s better to be pissed off then to be pissed on ? unless you enjoy golden showers !! lol

  85. Maddog50 December 16, 2015 11:47 am

Ok so 15-was and still hoping for some commits or signees soon. At least 7 or 8 have to be on D. Especially DL and LB.

  86. MAKA December 16, 2015 11:51 am

Yes hitmanhart, but the host was saying he would be pissed if haka and jezzy33 is the same person just to feed his ego, so made a few changes. Sorry

  87. hitmanhart December 16, 2015 11:58 am

    ok oh boi !! lol

  88. zΓΊqiΓΊ December 16, 2015 11:59 am

Get well so we can move on. Take a vacation. Hope it isn’t multi, multi type.
    Enjoy the Holidays.

  89. tom December 16, 2015 12:01 pm

    GOOD AFTERNOON, HAWAII!

ST: Take care! (“I’m undergoing an angioplasty on Friday”)

    People: What is, is.

  90. 808warriorfan December 16, 2015 12:06 pm

Mr Tsai … prayers for a successful procedure on Friday … Also have you heard anything about S & C coach Gary Beemer not being retained ???

  91. Down with... December 16, 2015 12:11 pm

#61 Classic! I almost spit out my lunch busting out laughing…that was a good one ST

  92. Warbow December 16, 2015 12:14 pm

I guess we’re not getting Handsome Tanielu.

  93. Old School Dave December 16, 2015 12:15 pm

Take care, Stephen. Eliminate the negative and focus on the positive. Your health is your most important investment, and this is only a sport.

  94. Warbow December 16, 2015 12:15 pm

    or David Fangupo?

  95. Arcumfortis December 16, 2015 12:16 pm

    70. Stephen: Blessings to you on Friday. Start today by imagining your procedure going smoothly (just relax, close your eyes and see everything going well in your minds eye….see your doc at the peak of his/her potential…see yourself in recovery feeling great after the procedure etc…..do this repeatedly over the next days and as you go into your procedure….this works I promise!)

And Jeezy33…..your posts are usually my favorites….yes, you get a little wound up at times but the energy level is good….you created more fun on the blog today then we have had in awhile!

  96. bowwar December 16, 2015 12:17 pm

It’s gotta all be put in perspective…You gotta do your best in recruiting…It’s not a perfect science and with Mid-Majors, you have to “make-do” with “table scraps” from the Big Schools and “Coach up.” I believe we will have a “better season” next year just because we’ll have a better coaching staff. We’ll just have to see how it all plays out…

What is important is ST doing well with his procedure on Friday…My thoughts and prayers for a successful procedure.

  97. mytake December 16, 2015 12:20 pm

Chow was trying to be like BYU. Eventually the team would end up with older mature players. Problem is you short change yourself in the beginning. The good news is most of those mormon mission guys will decommit now that Chow is gone. Scholarships will then free up and we can go after some jc guys. Sounds like a plan

  98. mytake December 16, 2015 12:22 pm

If I were a incoming freshman and wanted to play asap, UH is the first place I would go to.

  99. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 12:34 pm

93..Hawaii fans are told the check is in the mail constantly. They love to hear it. Never actually comes though but it’s still in the mail πŸ™‚ Maybe tomorrow though.

I tell Hawaii fans the check was never in the mail.

Truth hurts and I can handle the backlash from people who don’t want to know the truth.

And everything I say is relative to the topic of today.

  100. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 12:38 pm

    95. Not so hard to ask for a little common sense right??? I said it after his first recruiting class. Not hindsight at all. Norm Chow signed Gus Lavaka, Aaron Zwahlen, John Ursua, Mack Richards, Kamuela Borden. None of them played a snap for him. Kind of hard preparing for 3 years down the road when you got a job to do in the present. Then you realize you have a need now, and you pull out that credit card. Not rocket science

  101. DoubleB December 16, 2015 12:40 pm

Arcumfortis 93. I second your entire post… now where is that damn like button so I can just Lurk πŸ™‚

    Good Luck ST.

ST, wow…angioplasty. you must be getting old..lol. Nah, I’ve learned to try and control situations around me to keep the blood pressure down. Hard though sometimes, huh. Hope all goes well.

  104. DoubleB December 16, 2015 12:48 pm

Here’s to hoping Zwahlen and Ursua turn out to be players THIS yr. πŸ™‚

Jeezy33 – You should apply for the Director of Player Personnel position. You can really help the football program.

ST, What of the recruits from last year Flowers & Fieeiki?

  107. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 1:10 pm

    100. LOL. Followed by Norm asking Robert K if he knows anyone that’s hiring.

    #18,

Only returning OT types……include 2 seniors (Hollis, Koloamatangi)……and 2 (Norman, Webb) who haven’t played a single FBS snap yet (since they redshirted in 2015). While he played OT for Blinn College, Clements is built like an interior OG type. Hensley also an interior OG type.

That would explain why no scholie offer to Tovi (definitely an interior OG type)……while lots of scholie offers being made instead to mainland OT types.

While also an interior C/OG type, Auwae apparently worth the exception (like Ulu-Perry is worth the scholarship agreement) with Eletise & Herbig (also interior C/OG types) already committed to Pac-12. BTW, older bro Viliamu (who signed with Utah State in 2015 but didn’t enroll anywhere) would qualify as an OT type. Hmmm…..

Guessing that the tall slender kid from the Rock being recruited instead as a possible future DE…….since got the frame and length…….just like Mel Purcell & Ikaika Alama-Francis.

  117. kapakahi December 16, 2015 2:03 pm

    #111,

Rigo was a junior last season…..so will be returning senior next season.

  118. Boolakanaka December 16, 2015 2:04 pm

The Football Scoop is reporting that BYU has offered its head coaching job to Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo. If he turns the job down, it’s reportedly Sitake’s to take:

Sources tell us that Oregon State defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake is prepared, and is expected to become the next head coach at BYU, in the event that Ken Niumatalolo turns the job down.

  119. Derek December 16, 2015 2:16 pm

Aloha, Coach Norm Chow! What a mess you left us. He made so many promises, he didn’t deliver many of them. That’s why I don’t particular like promises and guarantees. It can come back and bite you. In recruiting, it’s an inexact science. You are talking about 18, even maybe even 17 to 21 football players trying to get a full scholarship. Coaches have to do a very good job in doing their player evaluations, academics, potential, etc. A lot of times, coaches don’t know what’s in their hearts or in their desires. I don’t like giving blue shirts for one simple reason.
When a player accepts a blueshirt he comes in as a walk-on, but is guaranteed a scholarship the next year. We are on the hook basically, unless the player leaves early. You don’t know how the player will perform in practice. I prefer the true walk-on. No guarantees. You come in because the players wants to play for the Univ. of Hawaii and wants to play football here. You practice hard, you do your best on the field and in the classroom, and you “EARN IT.” The coaches will see that and the player will be awarded a scholarship at the first opportunity. That’s the way Rich Miano got his scholarship. That’s how Chad Owens got his scholarship, and many other deserving players who I can’t remember right now.
That’s the way it should be. You don’t want the team if at all possible to be on the hook for a players that cannot make the playing rotation. When you are talking about human beings, there are no guarantees in life.

  120. oldtimer808 December 16, 2015 2:29 pm

What is truth but a person’s self imposed thoughts and beliefs in oppostion to other beliefs. Truth never hurts when it comes from self imposed wisdom that comes from ego based thoughts. We let go of unneccessary negative thoughts that becomes meaningless as we move forward to do the right things.

  121. jeezy33 December 16, 2015 2:32 pm

    117. You’re right. 3 win seasons to me seem like failure to me when it could mean jackpot to someone else.

  122. oldtimer808 December 16, 2015 2:33 pm

ST may you be blessed with much healing and quick recovery.

  123. oldtimer808 December 16, 2015 2:35 pm

    Stephen –

Mahalo so much for all you do here for all UH sports fans.

Prayers for healing what they have already found, prayers that no further problems are seen in the procedure. May the power of the Holy Spirit be upon and within you at all times in Jesus’ name. Complete healing and restoration to you by the grace of our Heavenly Father.

  125. oldtimer808 December 16, 2015 2:43 pm

I think you missed the point because there was no mention about a 3 win season or failures or successes

I don’t always agree with Jeezy, but he does his homework and his comments, like Rolo’s hiring have brought excitement to the blog again. That’s what blogs are – forums for opinions.

Best Wishes Stephen, I appreciate all you’ve done for us die hard UH sports fans. Here’s to a speedy recovery. And please take time to recover. It will be hard not reading your posts, but we will all be fine. Nothing is more important that YOUR health.

    Happy Holidays everyone!

    Best Wishes Stephen! Take Care!

  130. Sangamon Keith December 16, 2015 3:36 pm

Jeezy33 … I agree with your point that the chickens are coming home to roost. If I understand the issue, we’re operating at less than 25 scholarships because of these “mission” recruits that haven’t returned yet and might not fit with Rolo’s needs if they ultimately show up in the fall. We’re stuck because Norm basically borrowed these scholarships to get players he wanted without thinking about the consequences. Is that correct?

If it is, the past AD’s should be held responsible for allowing Norm to mortgage the future by using this practice. You might have used one or two for really exceptional prospects … but if this is meaning a lose of six in one recruiting year, it is criminal!

    Just my opinion.

    Keith

  131. turfwar December 16, 2015 3:54 pm

Take care ST and thank you for providing this blog where many of us have made it a daily habit throughout the year. Your hard work created a community here for those who have a similar interest. I don’t even remember what it was like before the warriorbeat. I don’t go to church but I do have you in my prayers. Come out stronger and keep this community alive for the next 20 years.

I don’t go to church but I do have you in my prayers. Come out stronger and keep this community alive for the next 20 years.????????
When the crowds came to John for baptism, he said, “You brood of snakes! Who warned you to flee God’s coming wrath? Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones. Even now the ax of God’s judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.”
The crowds asked, “What should we do?”
John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”
Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptized and asked, “Teacher, what should we do?”
He replied, “Collect no more taxes than the government requires.”
“What should we do?” asked some soldiers.
John replied, “Don’t extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay.”
Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah. John answered their questions by saying, “I baptize you with* water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I amβ€”so much greater that I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.* He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire.”

It does the same thing…only cheaper.
And have a “jolly happy” Friday post operation.

Angioplasty opens blocked arteries and restores normal blood flow to your heart muscle. It is not major surgery.

In the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa developed a serious foot disease. Yet even with the severity of his disease, he did not seek the LORD’s help but turned only to his physicians.

  145. BigFan December 16, 2015 8:28 pm

#144, it doesn’t minimize the issue. There’s still risks.

  146. Legistlature December 16, 2015 8:54 pm

RISK IN THE CHOICE YOU MAKE
“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!

  147. al December 16, 2015 11:08 pm

    144. What an ignorant statement. You obviously know nothing about the mechanics of an angioplasty, its risks, etc.

    Get a life bull.

  150. cappie the dog December 17, 2015 3:41 am

    144.

With any sort of surgery, there is risk.

  151. Legistlature December 17, 2015 4:04 am

    al 144
    But these oppressors know nothing;
    they are so ignorant!
    They wander about in darkness,
while the whole world is shaken to the core.

The living at least know they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, nor are they remembered.

  152. Legistlature December 17, 2015 4:26 am

Money is put into risky investments that turn sour, and everything is lost. In the end, there is nothing left to pass on to one’s children.

Every word of God proves true.
He is a shield to all who come to him for protection.

They deliberately forget that God made the heavens by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water.

  153. Legistlature December 17, 2015 4:37 am

    The sun will be rising
Good news about coaching additions should be coming

Give thanks to the LORD and proclaim his greatness.
Let the whole world know what he has done.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good!
    His faithful love endures forever.
