Gouveia keeps proving them wrong
Kurt Gouveia has spent a football life being overlooked.
UH did not recruit Gouveia, the state’s player of the year. He went to BYU, became an All-WAC linebacker and was a key member of the Cougars’ national championship team.
NFL teams were wary, too. He was selected in the 1986 NFL draft’s eighth round, a round that no longer exists. He played 13 seasons in the NFL, and earned two Super Bowl championship rings with the Washington Redskins. He made an interception in Super Bowl XXVI.
Last year, his first as a UH assistant coach, he offered a calm — but firm — teaching style to the outside linebackers. TJ Taimatuia had his best UH season under Gouveia’s guidance.
But Gouveia often deferred to defensive coordinator Kevin Clune, who has since departed to Utah State.
Now, according to people in the know, Gouveia has assumed a more active role in recruiting and helping to craft the direction of this season’s defense. It was Gouveia who scouted and recommended signing Rojesterman Farris, a cornerback from Coral Springs, Fla. Farris signed his letter of intent late Wednesday. Gouveia was impressed with Farris’ skills and quickness during the Football University combine in California. Scouting services overlooked Farris. That’s something Gouveia can understand — and appreciate.
First! Good to hear about Gouveia. Hopefully this means he’s not going anywhere soon.
Truegreen:
He’s not going anywhere.
kudos to Gouiveia.
Is this a build-up support article to Kurt Gouveia being named the DC?
so what’s the deal with Trey Linton and Tolu Fieeiki?
Linton is another Gouveia guy. Wonder why his letter isn’t in yet.
Gouveia did have an offer to go elsewhere.
Clune, Jones, Gouveia, Powell, Naeole and Moses all had offers/opportunities to go elsewhere.
5. I’m assuming grades on Tolu….
Fiieki is still committed to the Warriors. He needs to take care of some academic obstacles. When he does, they’ll send him a letter.
I appreciate and respect all the coaches who chose to stay with the Warriors rather than abandoning ship…I hope everything falls into place for a successful season!
Glad Reardon did his Reinbold article. Not sure how great he is Xs and Os, but it was pretty clear his players respected him, he could recruit Texas and midwest, and has a strong connection and passion for Hawaii.. Norm would be very wise to bring him back somehow.
7…..I thought Waianae HS already found their HC.
Jeezy:
I always thought they should move signing day to April, or whenever it is that regular college students get acceptance letters.
That would give more time to evaluate players — athletically and academically.
10. I wouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Most coaches would leave for job security and has nothing to do with jumping ship. The coaches who stayed have familes they raise in Hawaii and would only leave for the right deal. Jones, Clune, Demo aren’t from here and have no connection here. Need to support themselves.
Reading between the lines a.k.a. Understanding the subliminal, sounds more like needing credits, courses to obtain the elusive A.A. degree required of junior college transfers. Looks like a bit more work to do at per se a jc during the summer.
The timeline being no later than before the start of the bridge session at Manoa.
ST…They are looking at having an early signing day instead.
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/writer/dennis-dodd/24978192/early-football-signing-period-december-recommended
13. I actually prefer 2 signing periods. I know we have mid year signing for mid year transfers, but I like the way basketball does it. Have one in the fall for guys you know you can get into school, then a later one like you mention in April. Verbal commitments just don’t carry much weight to me now days.
we just slow in Hawaii. most other schools have already sent acceptance letters to their recruits. i seen kids post their acceptance letter to Wisconsin.
i know Stanford is sure of each recruits acceptance by the time signing day comes.
Reinebold is quite a character. (He’a also an original blog lurker.)
I remember when JJ ordered Mouton to stay on the mainland until his eligibility was finalized. But Mouton already bought a ticket to Hawaii. So, Mouton ended up hiding out on the Windward side (without JJ’s knowledge) until he was cleared to practice.
I guess if they had the early signing period for this years class, we would have gotten all those who de-committed at the last week.
If adopted, the sport’s new initial signing period would be in place this year for the 2016 recruiting class.
Warbow:
Thanks for the link.
Well, if reinbold is hired, for sure you won’t see the former kaiser hs walk-on on staff.
ST acceptance letters from UH and other colleges started arriving to high school students about a month ago.
McKnight does have “ties to hawaii”.
ST:
any info on who the 2 coaches that are leaving soon? somewhere it was reported and some felt it could be OC and WR
just got over a cold/cough and now throat getting “itchy” again because so many on the support staff are beginning to cough and they make very little attempt to cover it up – how do I know sitting in my office? it is not “muffled” at all!!!
By my count, we signed 16 kids… I minus Borden because I assume he signed a scholarship agreement in which he will count in 2017. I will add Furuta, Williams, and Riggins to the list giving putting us at 19 total scholarships. Taz Stevenson might put us at 20. With 5 scholarships remaining, I hope we don’t go for all projects. We should attack some grey shirt prospects like teams did to us in the past. Junior Alexis was scooped up and Tyler Gray. We should also pursue transfers that can enroll this summer that count against this class even thought they need to sit out a year. Keep the cupboard full for the following season.
24. But can he recruit? We need a recruiting gem.
The talk of an early signing period had been brewing over a year or two ago. Some of the big 5 powers were lobbying for this. Since we know who wears the pants around the ncaa you know it’s going to happen.
damn I forgot Zwahlen and Lavaka…
Warbow:
There are more good players than available scholarships (just like there are more good coaches than coaching jobs), so teams just move on whenever anybody de-commits. Verbals aren’t binding, of course, but they have value because then their spots are held. For instance, UH knew the Kahuku guys were going away, but the players never said anything officially. So UH was obligated to hold their spots, until they signed elsewhere, before giving the scholarships to others. If those players signed UH letters, UH would have been obligated to take them. That’s why coaches from every school always say: “We’d love to have you, but if you want to go somewhere else, that’s fine, but let us know so we can give your scholarship to someone else.” And that’s why coaches hate the hat dance at signing ceremonies.
I am not sure if jj entrusted him with recruiting.
My only concern about Farris…. Scouting services may have over looked him, but why would Florida International, South Florida, Central Florida, and Florida Atlantic over look him as well?
I guess there are exceptions to every rule like the time Utah St. was the worst team in the WAC and took Brian Suite who wasn’t recruited by Hawaii…
I just tend to find exceptions very rare… Hope he turns out good though.
A-House,
Do you mean OL coach? We don’t have an OC.
was not Reinbold connected to the Smith tradegy that cost UH about $30,000?
someone posted that he had no authority to offer scholarship, but did so and told Smith NOT to look elsewhere – unfortunately, there a change of staff and the old and/or new did not communicate their positions on his recruiting/playing status for UH
they say 10% never get the “word”
The hat dance at ceremonies is the biggest attention seeking non sense ever. Will some big time prospect end the trend? Everyone bashes LeBron about the decision but it seems like anyone who has the recognition to do it would.
Aren’t we keeping the door open for Hayes and Tolu?
Does that leave out our allotment?
i was sad we didnt get Fred Ulu-Perry but was very happy to see him go with UCLA and not have a whole dramatic decision during the ceremony.
iwwthm:
I was under the impression from previous posts last year that Jordan Wynn was the QB coach and OC
not so??
A house the OC is chow. We’re you inferring something?
Recruit kids like Mouton and Josh Leonard and 30k tragedies don’t mean a thing to me. haha
I miss the days of landing kids like that. Isaac Sopoaga might be the biggest signing shocker in my 15 years covering recruiting. I was a scout.com member and Hawaii was hardly mentioned in his articles. It was looking like a lock to Nebraska. All of a sudden he’s Hawaii bound. That was a memorable time.
I remember UH basketball used to do the two-for-one recruiting. UH would recruit the buddy of a top player. Sometimes it worked out. Most times UH would end up with the buddy but not the star player.
Several years ago, UH really worked hard in recruiting Luc Longley, a 7-footer out of Australia. The Rainbow had a good relationship with the Luc’s mother. As it turned out, Longley went to New Mexico … and his mother ended up taking classes at UH.
ST:
cannot UH coaches tell the recruit that we need to know by XXX date if you will accept or scholarship will be given to another?
fair is fair don’t you tink???
6’7″ 410 lbs, Holy sweet mother of Moses. And he’s every bit as ugly as he is big. It’s evening trending right now on SM. Lawd have mercy child. 0_o
http://www.sportingnews.com/ncaa-football/story/2015-02-04/byu-picks-up-biggest-commitment-of-signing-day-6-7-410-pounds-motekiai-tonga-missionary-rugby
34…a house, let’s bury the hatchet on that one please. What you state is not true, this is how rumors become nasty untruths.
No thanks on recruiting 400 pound linemen…
Rich Miano was very good at making the feel-good offer. UH and Oregon State were very good at signing players that were never going to qualify. The purposes were 1) It made the kid and his coach feel good; and 2) the kid would consider UH after going to a JC.
But UH can’t do that anymore. A new scholarship can’t be offered until after the Clearinghouse denies a player who has signed.
though he never panned out, getting Andrew Pearman was pretty crazy.
We all saw that HBO segment on The Fridge.
It’s really sad. He can’t even walk now.
46…during the Mack era, this was a common practice. It sure made him look good that he signed all these local boys.
Luc Longley played 10+ years in the nba.
Most coaches already know who the recruit is going to pick before their “hat selecting” show. The selected school coaches are told in advance but told not to “leak” it so the recruit can have his day in the spotlight.
A-house,
There isn’t an official Offensive Coordinator position listed on Hawaii Athletics. The fabulous duo of WyChow (Get it? Why Chow?) may have been defacto offensive coordinators but nobody held the official title and I doubt anyone got the pay to go along with it.
49. In the end, it is a huge reason we are where we are now… Signing Tigi Hill makes you look like the man on signing day.. but when they never make it, just slowly sinking your program…
Jeezy:
Miano was tight with the College of the Canyons defensive coordinator. I think his name was Leon Criner, or something like that. But the DC and head coach didn’t get along. So Miano worked Sopoaga on the sly.
Another thing about Sopoaga. His name should have been spelled Isaak. That’s because his first name is Isa‘ako. But UH spelled it Isaac in the media guide. But UH declined to change the spelling to a K. Sopoaga later said they told him it’s spelled “Isaac” in Hawaii. lol. That wouldn’t happen today because there are no media guides.
Save for the two, hopefully, late jc qualifiers…don’t we have one more scholie left for the best “free agent?”.
22
al, let’s be honest. No one on the staff at that time could stand him or his ego.
jeezy33,
Good point. After all, why does BYU know about recruiting anyway. 😉
Tigi Hill had a chance. The second time, at least. He just needed to pass five classes to earn his AA. He didn’t do it in time.
There was an offensive lineman who just couldn’t get his AA in time. After holding his scholarship for two years, they said he could join as a walk-on. He then qualified, and joined as a walk-on. Even started a few games.
A-House:
Wynn is the quarterback and play-caller. There is no OC.
Old diver…I know one DB coach who had a conflict with him. Probably because he was a media favorite who stole some of “mic time” from him.
al, when key members of the coaching staff met with Mack to convince him to stay as head coach, their had one condition. The coach in question had to go. If you are familiar with what happen then you know which coaches I am talking about.
When is Chow announcing Tom Mason as his DC?
Al–I knew Luc personally, watched the superbowl with him one year while we were about to light up a–well, lets not discuss that here…. He played in the NBA for 10 years…the reason–two letters–MJ.
I think this year’s recruiting class is filled with guys ready to play immediately because of the transfers, missionaries and grayshirts. I bet that more members of this class will play in 2015 than, say, San Diego State’s 2015 recruits. I don’t think too much about this class will do in 2017 because I’ll probably be dead by then.
61…Heard it from the horses mouth, Miano was taking credit for recruiting several players who was recruited by other coaches. An asst. to the asst. was very vocal about letting everyone know this when he wasn’t retained by McMackin after JJ left.
Boolakanaka:
Longley played alongside Jordan, and he later was traded to the Knicks for Patrick Ewing. That’s a Kevin Bacon-like career.
why, in norm’s 4th year, are we having to go the JC route?
Miano recruited Sopoaga, Colt Brennan, Veikune, among others.
Then again, BigWave gets should get credit for Veikune. BigWave called me to say that Veikune was a free agent and that I should relay the message to UH. So I called Miano, who then called Veikune. An hour later, Veikune was a Warrior.
#62 ????
TS….It would be interesting to find out who Coach Reinebold and Coach Duff. I heard that they all were taking credit for the other guys recruits.
al:
I am in NO position to “infer” anything, but I would not mind if the HC/OC calls it quits!
I am hopeful that the team does better, but if not it may be the start of something “new”!
Pet Carroll’s last offensive play call mirrors UH play calling of “up-dah-middle” even if there are 8 or 9 defensive players in the “box” – don’t have to run up the middle – can fake and do a “play-action” as Wilson is a swift runner.
Letsgo:
Because the previous staff stopped recruiting before it was let go. There were only two commits, and one was not academically qualified.
64…ah yeah, cigars were popular back then.
al:
#44 I will definitely defer to you on that and let it be buried!!!
66
Nope, it was the mentioned coach who was taking credit for recruiting. That was on of the reasons the staff didn’t want him around. There were some other problems concerning who was taking credit for recruiting but those were caused by how JJ handed out responsibilities for home and school visits. Fact is the Lee brothers and Miano became very close during Macks stay as head coach.
Every class should have about 4 JC kids IMO…. Every team has a weakness and JC is good to fill in a weakness. Thing is you better hit when you go that route…
Without naming names, we have whiffed more often than hit on our JC guys. And that doesn’t lead to success. Milovale(year 1 recruit) might be the only JC OL so far that held his own. Wasn’t a all conference guy or anything but he did what he was brought in to do.
What are the chances of Miano coming back as DB coach? He bleeds green and can recruit.
With it being the season of recruits and high hopes, the following attached article is a great example of how even for an elite program like Oregon, recruits that all evaluate at the 5 star level, that for the many that fulfill their identified potential, there are a fair amount of folks who just never panned out; see; http://www.oregonlive.com/recruiting/index.ssf/2015/02/top_10_highest-rated_oregon_du.html#15
In short, its not a science, you gotta have your head on straight, and most important, you gotta play the game.
Who’s going to volleyball tonight?
72…hmmmm, I thought a certain asst coach kept recruiting in hopes of being named the HC. It’s what he publicly committed to and said.
Oregon aqnd Oregon State does a great job to developing talent. we used to be able to do that.
so far, Chow hasnt developed anyone. maybe he helps players regress
75….The coach I’m speaking of was Terry Duffield, aka “Coach Duff”. I once received a long pm from him on the scout board telling me how he recruited most of what was reported as Miano recruits. Of course this was after he was not retained by McMackin. Could have been sour grapes talking.
Can’t wait to see Wittek getting the ball to Kemp, Pedroza, Ewaliko, Haynes, and DSJ. Also can’t wait to see what other weapons we’ve recruited.. hopefully finally that homerun threat. I’m stoked cause even though he sucked at USC, Wittek was once rated one of the top pro style QBs out of high school.
So much for recruiting. Is UH changing their offense? Are we dumping the TEs? Have we recruited enough OL. If not, we wont improve a lot. Cause Wittek and Reilly will get hurt during the course of the season. One of the reasons IK had a hard time was he was getting whacked all the time!
Steven, thanks for the feel good story on Kurt G. Naoele and Powell are also good stories. Go Warriors
Another player who signed with Hawaii, but never made it was Ben Mamea. Maybe academics. There are a lot of players that never panned out. That DE from Texas, I forgot his name, was on the team a couple of years, but hardly played, then quietly left.
Jeezy, if John Ursua and Cam Hayes get here eventually then that’s 2 more. Mr. Limbo and Mr. Complicated. I hope they’re all in.
You can not win without a QB. Seems to be more talent than ever before
72
As I recall Rockne Freitas took over control of recruiting after Mack was fired. The interim staff could not make a move without his approval.
that is a good point, no matter who the next coach is, he is going to be screwed in his 1st recruiting class because of how slow UH is to make a hire.
we will be better off relieving Chow of his duties midway through the season so we can have a new HC in place, ASAP after the season is completed.
ST: in addition to the prior coaching quitting their recruiting efforts, Chow hit the ground crawling when he decided to stay at Utah through their bowl game game. You would think he would have left Utah to start his first job as HC as soon as possible.
Out of curiosity. Does someone know who Rich Mianos father was and what did he do for a living
aloha and aloha friday everyone!!
great story ST
ST is chow try to feel the coaching spots with local coaches or jst moving coaches around?
fill
I’ve always wondered why they couldn’t just promote Gouveia to DC. Been thinking about that for several weeks now. 14 years in the NFL, 4 in college, and 4 in high school, that’s 22 years of football experience. Fourteen years of NFL football seven days a week eight to nine hours a day. I’m sure he knows a thing or two about defense.
haha what!? Gouveia coaching experience is similar to Jordan Wynn and Luke Matthews
I thought Misno’s dad had the parrots in Wakiki.
All the comments about Miano makes me think he may be the second coming of that Texas Tech coach. Young guy, dances with the players, good looks, flirting with the moms. Big first year then failure. Let’s see how good a coach he is. Talks big.
88…I believe you heard wrong. You can’t recruit unless you’re a coach and have passed the NCAA recruiting test.
A couple of Warrior Worlds ago, ST mentioned that Coach Chow had tried to get two Asst Coaches = who declined and joined a NFL team.
So it isn’t as if he was sitting on his duff.
Waianae has a new head coach. It was mentioned earlier here on the blog. Anyone know the name of his child? Warriors may not get another KT type player from there any time soon. Hope I’m wrong though and the kids make their own choice.
He is a good guy and a friend and wish him all the best turning the Searider program around.
RE: Derek #86
Was it Desmond Dean? I remember he came from one of the best Texas High schools.
ST: Great read! I am really glad that Kurt is on the team, and here to stay.
BYU signee reminds of the Big Samoan Kiwi from New Zealand, The walking tent – MARK NUA 6’7 400 plus on recruiting trip, 49er/UH Great Jesse Sapolu said aloha to Mark during his recruiting trip, Jesse joked about not wanting to stand next to Nua because he felt small next to the big Kiwi. Nua was light on his feet, flexible, and explosive for his immense size, VJ nearly 30″ Champion Shot Put teenage Down Under games. Discovered article on Nua playing Club football in NZ. BYU recruit from Tonga discovered by BYU DL coach Steve Kaufusi playing basketball in Tonga.
Stephen –
I’m loving the posts…
and I’m going to Volleyball!
Wednesdays game was as good as it gets for men’s college volleyball – #6 UH beat #USC in a match that was settled by two points in the fifth set. It also featured a match up between cousins Kupono Fey of Hawai’i and Micah Christenson of USC.
Also got a chance to see Tui Tuileta play for the Trojans. I watched him play, saw his athleticism and wondered what might have been had he signed with Hawai’i. I’m sure he would be a star in both football and volleyball for the Warriors, whereas USC, he is currently a scout team QB. He will be a star on their VBall team soon methinks.
We have a block of ten seats for this night’s match – including several of my classmates from Kamehameha – Kupono’s Mom is our also our classmate. Tonight’s game should be great one!
GO WARRIORS!!!
TROUNCE THE TROJANS!!!
Kifi – post 94 – Must agree!
Anyone notice former Oline Ikaika Rodenhurst on a TV commercial?
He’s the former Oregon St recruit who transferred back home, walked on and earned his degree. Now he’s successful climbing the ladder as a project manager in the construction industry.
Although not being a starter, he made the most of his return. People around town recognize him as being a former Warrior. Would he have been recognized if he stayed at OSU?
There are benefits of playing for the home team
Al, per my interpretation of Chow’s press conference, I could see 2-3 JC guys not qualifying
ST remeber the picture I took of someone who “resembled” Ryan Mouton?
Oh wait, I gotta go, I hear the GoGo’s song “Our lips are sealed”
Woosh….
I hope we can pack the Stan tonight. It’s a Friday night; no excuses. You can go Puns carnival tomorrow…
Mr. Tsai any new updates on john ursua? Is he coming here or went elsewhere? Last thing was he was having problems with clearinghouse? Pls inform. Thanks
Josh Pacheco show interviewed Texas writer who reports Tom Mason to complete paperwork to become DC at UH. Tom was interim HC when JJ left SMU. He was not retained be incoming HC. Writer had nothing but great things to say about Tom. People credit his defense as SMU DC as the reason for teams success as offense struggled.
Josh Pacheco spoke to the Southern Methodist play-by-play man, and it looks like ex-interim head coach Tom Mason is our next defensive coordinator.
I was hoping for Pat Hill.
Tom Mason could “Lay the Foundation” for the second coming
I’ll be there tonight. Never miss a volleyball game. Aside from maybe the sailing team the men’s volleyball team is the only UH team that has a chance to be competitive enough to win a National Championship year after year. Don’t think Wahine volleyball will ever compete for the top recruits like they did before the BCS era.
Many of these JC recruits are at a JC due to academic issues out of HS. Now they get a second chance and they still don’t have their academics squared away. Complete idiots for potentially missing out twice on an opportunity to earn a free degree. Although I don’t agree with the recruiting of Punahou I must say that their track record of academically preparing their kids for college seems legit. Their kids are going to Cal, Stanford, ND, etc which are top notch academic institutions. You never hear of Punahou players that are unable to qualify.
116.
Nevada’s Chris Ault returned to head coaching duties and took the Wolf Pack to greater heights. But he returned with a new wrinkle: the pistol offense. (Or did he already run the pistol offense prior to becoming the athletic director.)
More teams see the ex-SMU head coach’s offense, so it’s debatable if he’d get the same results.
Norm Chow is our coach, and let’s just hope that a quarterback can elevate the team.
RE: PONO #118
Ahhh… the things you can do with $$$.
Lots of bashing of coaches 2 days posters….good to see…we are all human…n make mistakes…n not all love us…or love what we do as people or coaches..or as generals..etc…
Now we just have to wait for yobo n FJ… n this blog will be complete…he he he
Cappie the dog….do not place to much credence in what a podogee says…about a coach…he he he
Ah, the bully board lovers of “Coach” Duff. Talk about a loose — and unstable — cannon, LOL. Can’t believe that some people are still holding that guy in such esteem.
113.
Interesting. I thought it was established that the person they were gonna hire was someone that UH fans are very familiar with and has prior ties to the program.
The situation is fluid. ST mentioned that two coaching candidates took NFL jobs, one of which I assume to be the previous DC candidate with prior ties.
Warrior Mojo you are absolutely correct. I firsthand witnessed Duff in action at a road game in SJ. Without going into too much detail it was almost something out of the Hangover. This guy is a looooooose cannon.
105. Re: BYU’s recruit. There’s a middle school kid on the Big Island with the same last name who UH should follow. He hasn’t played football because he’s over the weight limit, so he plays Rugby. Very light on his feet for a big guy.
Oooops….4 got….our lady softball team…won their opening game of the season last nite…wish them well this tournament…
n hope the VB teams repeats 2 nite… but 3-o…no geeven chance ….
like that dude says….steal a line here….
gun…fun…it..he he he
123. Andrew — That was the first choice, but he went elsewhere, apparently. He was going to run the 4-3 defense.
The mention of the “The Hangover” movie makes me think of the Asian guy that attacks the main characters in the movie. That kind of loose cannon?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNBmq7S05uk
Pono … Why are you against recruiting Punahou? Kids are just as local as any others. UH has long history of getting second tier Punahou athletes going back to Tomey years … many end up starting.
Just curious as to your reasons.
Keith
Punahou Class of ’68
Mojo…I don’t see where anyone here is holding him in high esteem. It was just the opposite.
Miano’s family owns several businesses that have been quite successful. One of them is a country and western venue in Waikiki. Nice dance floor.
eh St Anthony Trojan,…you stealing my TUNDAH!
…but fo real, beat da Trojans HANA HOU!
…wahine too!
Re #129
I think Pono meant he didn’t agree with Punahou’s recruiting of kids to go to Punahou, not UH’s recruiting of Punahou kids for college. I think that’s what he meant.
Re #130
Sorry, I misunderstood.
So I read that Chuckie Keeton got his medical hardship and will be back at USU next year.
How is it that USU gets this kind of news so early — before spring ball!– and UH doesn’t find out until the night before the first game or even later? What is UH doing (or not doing) different?
Thanks for the 4 giveness.. he he he
hope with us 2 cheering them on… be DOUBLE WIN NITE 4 US…
I am surprised that Tom Mason took the job here. But I guess it is really tough finding a job if you end up on team with a losing season like SMU. I hope he does well here. I found an article on him that I had read awhile back and thought that his would be one hungry coach given a chance.
http://www.coachingsearch.com/article?a=SMU-Tom-Mason-I-knew-if-I-didnt-get-it-done-this-was-probably-my-last-chance
Rich Miano says, on sports animals show, that he will go back to coaching, preferably here, depending on who the HC is . He is a guest host today.
I’m gonna be honest…. If it is Tom Mason as DC. I’m very disappointed. Not really impressed at all where he’s been and what he did at the schools where he was at. I hope we get someone that has better credentials and had success where he was just at. Some might be happy or sad for me to say this but I rather have Miano then Mason. Miano can relate to the local kids, very smart and intelligent.
138. Who do you expect us to attract to this job at this time? I don’t know anything about this guy but I doubt any DC would have good stats working in JJ’s system.
If Norm is still the HC we should be stoked with who ever wants to come coach here! Not like we can be picky! It’s sad times for the UH Football and the athletic program in general.
Rich Miano continuing on the air. He said he has not applied for any of the UH openings. If Coach Chow asked him, then he’d apply…Coach Chow has not asked.
Appears to me Miano a righteous self promoter?
So obvious to me,am I hearing wrong?
Getting a lot of love though…
ne coach should be happy to come n coach at uh..if no job..is not that bad a position…pay may not be that good.. but a one year vacation with pay…
Chow should ask him to apply then pick someone else.
Come coach at UH! If you don’t like it then quit right before the season…and still get paid.
Coach Chow is going to hire whoever he is comfortable with. And whoever that may be, I hope he doesn’t jump ship before the season starts!
who ever takes the DC job i would take family leave for the da 1sts 3 games of the season !! going take cracks !! and not look good on your next job application come next year! never seen a coach run a program so bad like this one !! very sad because the kids are trying so hard out there!! UH REALLY NEED A AD SOON !! and do what BJ is unable to do
looking at UH realistically, IMHO, it’s losing program, with “moderate facilities”, coaches who have limited playing and/or coaching experience, and no leadership at he AD or Chancellor level and beyond – yep, to the Pres and BOR, a HC who may very well be gone during or immediately after the 2015 season
can a “miracle occur? maybe, but don’t hold your breathe as you may expire well before the season is half-way through.
dreamers will continue to hold unto the miracle dream that UH will make the Hawaii Bowl – if they do, then it was because of the new coaches and the left-over coaches really busting balls and getting the players in believing – BELIEVE – we all heard and used that word during the 2007 season!!! but, it’s the players who have to really and truly believe before any miracle happens
during the off-season all the OL study and execute each play with precision – who blocks whom, who pulls and blocks an imaginary defensive player – slower pace at first, but not half-ass, and full steam later for each and every play – and, peers acting as critics when one makes a mistake – this way, all players can learn from each other – the defense, by position, can do the same – visualize how it supposed to be executed – by number ones and number twos and number threes and mix up the players who are #1 or #2 or #3 – each will learn from peers
this is what makes a TEAM!
To all the Chow koolaid drinkers, headed by Tsai, let’s get it straight here and be FACTUAL, although that seems impossible to you. It is not bashing the clueless head coach (yes he is clueless) when the facts of 3 disastrous losing seasons with pathetic offensive and defensive showing most of the time over that span is objectively reviewed. Furthermore, it’s a FACT that he blamed the assistant coaches last year and stated “we needed to make changes and move forward” as he threw his previous coaches under the bus and the fact that he totally relied on players recruited by the previous regime for ANY success last year while his “star qb” he proclaimed as his man languished on the bench while he directed an offensive scheme that was neither power pro set nor full blown spread assisted by a kid 2 years removed from school as his offensive right hand man. None of his recruits had any major impact on the success of the team, a team that he said would be stronger and faster and tougher than what he said the previous head coach was able to accomplish. You see, I actually read and remember all the bs Chow proclaimed he would be able to accomplish. I actually read and remember how he slighted the previous coaches, how he abandoned any continuity from the past, and how he arrogantly installed his brand of puritanical righteousness on the team (which, by the way he’s backtracking from if it’s true about him going back on the long-hair restriction). UH has had enough of this snake oil salesman, send him back to the place where his bs’ing ways are an accepted practice.
#129. When did I say I was against recruiting Punahou kids. I said that people are against Punahou recruiting kids to it’s school.
#95, Chow has been a vagabond OC for about 40 years before being head coach for UH. Your absurd premise of Gouveia being a good coach because he starred as a player just got shot to pieces.
Wasn’t Reinbold the guy who came over to Hawaii on his own dime, worked under JJ basically as an unpaid aid and sucked up enough to be elevated to a full time coach the following year? Isn’t he also the one who proclaimed his love for Hawaii and it’s Polynesian culture then hightailed out of here as soon as the greener pasture on the mainland availed itself to him, under JJ at SMU? He’s EXACTLY the type of character who belongs with Chow – big lips, empty head.
oldyobo, no one’s head is emptier than yours. You obviously have no clue as to why Reinebold left so quit flapping your lips.
ouch… that was a choke job..
What really got me was when he took the names off the players jerseys. Most asinine and idiotic thing you could do as a head coach. Us guys watching the telecast didnt know the names of the players on the field!!!! We would have had to go buy lineups from ALOHA Stadium. WHAT the hell was that all about!! WHAT the hell were those IMUA JERseys? RIDICULOUs.

I assume you only object to Punahou recruiting but have no objections to other schools doing the same?
154 Lenovo
No, you got the wrong guy.
5 set thriller again at the Stanley coming up short 18-20 in the last. Good job BOWS!
Great to see Gov. & Mrs. Ige enjoying the match tonight. There was a lot of fan energy & him seeing UH perform on an even to better level with a major PAC12 team has got to be a good thing.
The more I look at it , the more I realize that this years class is one of the best that Hawaii has ever had since becoming a division one school. Great job bu coaches of of a progaram that has had three consecutive losing seasons. Very difficult task.
Puritanical – wow that’s a word that we never used in the hood.
RE: #155
WarriorMojo — you got that right, as usual.
I recall Reinbold had a pretty good paying job in NFL Europe and wondered why he came here too. His explanation was that he wanted to join one of the greatest gathering of coaches ever (and obviously augment his own resume). The coaches: June Jones, former NFL Houston, Atlanta, and San Diego head coach. Mouse Davis with 50 years of coaching in the NFL and college. Jerry Glanville and his colorful NFL career. Other veteran coaches (McMackin didn’t return yet) added in probably totaled 200 years NFL experience in a college.
I recall Jeff Reinbold telling me he came to Hawaii to “get in on that action” with this assembly of coaches. Yes, he told me. Many today do not know that Reinbold came to ST’s Blog Party 2 and a Cattle Call at Camellia. In Camellia, he sat across from me and one person down and spoke mostly to others, but I could tell he was serious and a great recruiter. Why? because looking his face and hearing him talk, I would trust my son to go away and play football if he said he’ll look after him. Really…and I don’t even have any kids. 😐 When people say he’s a great recruiter, believe it.

Tom Mason is a solid DC and he was a big part of SMU’s success with JJ in the years when they were very successful at the Hawaii Bowl– held Nevada and Kaepernick to 10 points (as SMU scored over 40), and held Fresno State, MWC champ and Carr to 10 points (as SMU scored over 40). His problem here will be that he runs a 3-4 and we have not recruited the nose tackles for a 3 man front. But I think, we may convert one or two of our big offensive linemen to play the nose. Rumor from Dallas is JJ put Mason and Chow together.
Oldyobo, I normally disregard your posts a plain ranting, but I’ll give your #151 post as having merit. I may not agree with everything you say, but it is concise and supportable.
Coach Tom Mason to Hawaii
SMU fans know Tom Mason landed the Defensive Coordinator job. Is this announcement on Hawaiian time? Could be a problem when it comes to decision making.

It’s sound great for some coaches at the University of Hawaii football! I know that a lots of them are leaving to coach other university on mainland. A lots of peoples are or still pointing fingers at head coach Norm Chow. It’s really hard for him to see everything goes well with the team. For the pass two years he didn’t show me nothing!. Because his assistant coach aren’t helping him out at all!. What Norm Chow should do is to try to get Colt Brennan as assistant quarterbacks coach. If former UH quarterback Timmy Chang can be a quarterback coach at Jackson State University why can’t Colt do the same thing like him?. Or try to hire the head coach from Mater Dei high school if you really don’t know who, I’m talking about? Ask Matt Wittek, Colt Brennan and others five stars quarterback who went on to USC or University? He really knows how to make a great players!. Because every years he always has so many five stars comes out from that school! . Because the coaches that Norm Chow has really needs more experience in the level of service. Let them try it out first in Division three football program level and work up to division one!. If University of Hawaii ever hire the Head Coach from Mater Dei you will see a lot’s of five stars players want to come to Hawaii to play football at the University of Hawaii! . Because of the highest level of coach are coaching there!. They should be a lot’s of defensive coaches and coordinators from other well known University program and some great one too! Pleases not from a division three!. And soon there find a new Doctor coach! . Most importantly!. University of Hawaii please and stop getting your sports program in trouble and the world news!. Because remember the NCAA is always want to make big trouble for the University in anyways they can!. But great job of recruiting this year! GO WARRIORS!. And former UH’s players who become head coach or assistant coaches! Thank you! for giving your smart and experience once you had learn when you were young!
Reinbold applied for the UH head coach job after Jones left for SMU. He was on Leahey and Leahy saying how much he loved Hawaii and wanted to continue the program with returnees Bess, Graunke, Pilares leading the offense. UH hired McMackin instead of Reinbold. Bess went early to the NFL, Graunke was put in the dog house, Reinbold went to SMU, and even Brian Kajikawa was let go by McMackin. Reinbold is in Canada and must miss the surfing in Hawaii nei.
It will be interesting to see who will succeed Chow– lots of familiar names that might apply, plus the potential mainland applicants. I think both UH and Chow will see Chow retiring after the 2015 season (hopefully in 2015 Chow leaves on a high note),
#155, Reinbold left for SMU, abandoning UH even when it was clear big Mac would have retained him, he left SMU abandoning JJ, who basically made him (some reports indicated at the time that JJ actually let him go). All he could find was a non-descript job in Canada (well, so much for him being highly regarded). He’s been sucking up ever since to whoever he can in Hawaii to get back here. Well, if this type of guy ranks high in your character trait, you deserve him and Chow together.
As usual, someone doesn’t know anything.
McMackin and Reinebold did not get along, and Reinebold was never, ever offered a job on Mack’s staff.
Waiting at the door of the new blog entry. Seems to be locked at the moment but can hear ST inside typing something interesting.
Shoko:
It’ll be a volleyball item.
Nothing will be happening with football hires for a few days.
