Warriors close to naming coordinators
SMU’s Tom Mason and Idaho State’s Don Bailey are leading candidates to be named the Warriors’ defensive and offensive coordinators. They’re are obstacles, though, before anything can be finalized.

No matter the outcome, fans of Warrior volleyball surely had fun at last night’s match against No. 2 USC.
The crowd was large — and rowdy. Even the hecklers were back. (When it comes to heckling, Hawaii volleyball fans offer the funniest lines.) People yelled, danced, and did the wave.
Head coach Charlie Wade should be credited for the resurgence. Wade has worked to reverse the attendance slide that was triggered when the Warriors were stripped of the 2002 national title. To be sure, there still are obstacles. The Warriors remain the proverbial ugly stepchild of the athletic department, at least in terms of scheduling. The Outrigger tournament usually is held Thursday through Saturday. This year, men’s basketball hijacked Saturday, forcing the tournament to end on a Sunday. But that was too late for Penn State and Ohio State. Both teams left Saturday morning, and ended up playing only two matches in the tournament. Until basketball season ends, volleyball won’t get the coveted Friday-Saturday slots; instead, it has Wednesday/Friday or Friday/Sunday series, as it did this past week. It’s not easy to get people off the couch at midweek especially when an event is televised, as UH football will realize for its Thursday opener.
Wade fought to close the upper level for his matches, making every seat a good seat. The band and cheerleaders perform every match. Youth singers are brought in to perform the national anthem and Hawai‘i Pono‘i. Wade and coach Milan Zarkovic also started a club program. Most of all, after three years of recruiting to build depth, the Warriors can lose their best outside hitter to an injury and two more replacements ready to go. Things are on the rise when Gov. David Ige attends a match.

Gov. Ige’s attendance is a really good sign. Makes me feel hopeful the state may take a larger presence in support of UH Athletics.

Yup. It’s been a while since the Stanley rocked like last night. It was really fun even in a loss because while no one likes to see their home team lose the mistakes are correctable and the bad guys were led by a local boy who is generally thought of as the Marriota of college volleyball. We will not see a better setter or server this season. Without Micah I’m not sure SC is even in the top ten. Meanwhile don’t forget basketball bows are on cable today at 5 and Santa Barbara could be without their best player. A 3-1 road trip would be amazing. Unless they come home and lose which would nullify their progress in the conference standings. And about this recruiting class I kind of feel like Kifi (last blog). The more I look at it and see the recruiting class videos of other MWC teams the better I feel about ours. Watched the football team working out on Ching Field last night before the volleyball match and they look strong and fit. Kudos to the strength coach and his staff.

The folks who cover government were saying that there were concerns whether Gov. Ige was pro-UH. His attendance is significant.
Then again, every UH president/chancellor and governor eventually realizes that UH sports is the most covered and offers some of the most positive stories. Generally, there isn’t a lot of good news in Hawaii. I mean, Target can’t even open a store in Kailua without people getting grumpy. But I digress.
Did Abercrombie attend any UH sporting events besides football?
I have to give another kudos again to Kifi about his comments on yesterday blog ! I think it is telling that he is former warrior great and a part of Hawai’i prep school lore. Perhaps, what it most reflects is the attitude of anyone who has been part of team sports; that the most important and valuable team is the one that you currently a part of and support.
So, while we can dither about this player or the next, folks that have been part of a team, know that it is the guy right next to you, right now, that is most critical. So, at this point, let’s just support the guys that have made the conscious choice to be a warrior….and to everyone else-the hell with them–we’re warriors.
Need more fans like the aunties. They are an amazing group. I wish they would let the band play the National Anthem for all the sports at the SSC.
Nice crowd on hand and loud. Watching it on tv you don’t get the full effect though.
Saw a few of those guys following the govenor around. I wonder if they still have eligibility. We could use a few more defensive tackles in this year’s recruiting class.

Re-Reinebold
Would he be a good hire as a special teams coach at Hawaii?
For the last 2 seasons he has been the special teams coach for the Hamilton team in the CFL.
Here’s a coach that has 30 plus years of coaching experience, is renowned recruiter and can fill in as secondary coach, WR coach. I see him as adding contagious morale to the staff as opposed to the former special teams coach (who I viewed as a cancer to the team).
Did Reinebold interview/apply when Chow first came aboard? The reason I mention this is that I remember distinctly that the blog host mentioning that Reinebold was seen at UH (or something to that effect) when Chow initially set out in assembling his first coaching staff. This fact doesn’t imply anything…just curious. Anyway, I like Reinebold as a coach, person.
A lineman with the initials KL fits the description.
Interesting how some guys move up the coaching ladder very quickly. This guy has come in and surpassed more established Seattle assistants such as Ken Norton Jr. and Rocky Seto in a short period of time. He was a college GA as recent as 2009. Seto will probably become the full-time DBs coach, now. Being capable, along with timing is important.

Just read the editorial on cutting the UH $31 Million Deficit.
With all the problems UH has, I think the athletic budget request for $3 Million seems minor. On the other hand, I don’t think that it has been included in the state’s budget yet (anyone know for sure?) and if it doesn’t get into the budget, it won’t happen, meaning cuts in the athletic budget.
Fiscal management at UH has been a problem for years and gets worse every year– you almost need to start all over to get something that works.

I have increased my level of hope with the new DC and OC hires as long as Chow allows them more “lateral and longitudinal” space to work and develop the team – a respectable showing in 2015, and that mean 50% or more wins, to start the long up-hill climb for Hawaii

Special thanks to Mr. Tsai who works overtime, all the time, to provide coverage of our UH programs. Up early on Wednesday to report on National Signing Day, munching on his dinner between sets of the VBall match, and running after interviews late Wednesday night after the great Vball win! Don Bailey sounds like a fairly innovative OC.

Bailey has probably coached some Hawaii players at one of his stops, like Montana State and Portland State. He may have also run into Tommy Lee who has also coached in that neck of the woods. He is know for running a passing attack, but ran the ball too when he had the RB’s and offensive line to do it. Will be interesting to see how he adjusts to MWC football. Once comparison score– last year we scored 14 points vs Utah State, Idaho State with Bailey as OC scored 20.

Great match, great series! Any time we can split a series with the Trojans and come down to the last two points, it’s a positive.
A large group of friends and family atteneded with us last night, and many had never been to a Men’s VBall game. They all came away raving about the game, the crowd, the atmosphere and the play of both teams. One of the best men’s college VBall games of the year was played at the Stanley last night.
We have a relatively young team playing without one of its regular starters – these guys are worth the price of admission any time! The future looks bright.

#21. Well I hate to say it but if the state can’t find money for the decifit and UH is looking into cutting out some programs,as a UH system they should use the 3.5 million athletic budget from UH Hilo one day and slowly trickle Hilo to inter mural sports only.

So coach Arnold was notified on Termination without Cause at the end of October. Per UH’s contract with him, UH needs to give him 90 days notices, which would have been up around the end of January. Back in November, the sales pitch was that Termination without Cause would only cost UH the few hundred thousand dollars remaining on his contract. At the time, Gib gave some made some pretty strong statements about wanting to remain the coach. However, he never mentioned the Termination without Cause penalty statement in his contract. Raising the specter of a $1.4M added cost to UH would have surely encouraged debate about the wisdom of UH’s actions. Instead, it appears he decided to remain silent until the 90 notice ran out. $1.4 buys a lot of legacy, I guess. The UH could really use that money to hire new football coaching staff members. Great news on the new hires though. Finally, an OC! 🙂

UH sure fell apart at the end of that game. Seemed like UCSB could throw up any kind of shot at the end of that game and it would go in. It’s a shame Benji had bad timing on that last timeout since Nevels actually sunk the 3 to tie it. Not to mention Flemming made that crazy shot while falling backwards to tie it but his foot was on the 3 point line…tough, tough loss
I have watched only a few of the UH MBB games, but came away with a distinct impression that the players, in the 2d half, become laxadasical (like my speling?)by allowing opponents to find open spaces for 3 pts, and Bobbit throws all kinds of crazy passes that’s picked off for scores – yes, he has many steals, but he also has many turnovers – wonder what the ratio is?
seems like Benji Taylor allows the players freedom to do whatever they want causing the team to lose close games – yes, the team is doing “well”, but Taylor needs to put his foot down and discipline certain players for the sake of the team – being a good guy will not be beneficial to himself and the team
during the late 60′ and into the early 70s a certain claims department kept telling management that the client pays a lot of premiums, but the amount paid for claims far exceeded the premiums collected – management finally saw the “light” and let the client go

So barring unforeseen circumstances we have a DC and an OC. Think both are definite upgrades. The prior DC was a position coach prior to arrival, definitely a plus to have an experienced DC. The OC is like a lot of Gems who kick around at lower levels waiting for the right opportunity coupled with exposure. I think it is the best moves at these positions since NCOS took over. Now there has. To be an accomplished receiver coach kickin kickin. Around out there that can teach route mechanics, catching and ball/body mechanics as it pertains to receiving—seems so simple but a lot like golf……takes awful lot and tons of work just to be decent—-hopefully this is a welcome note to both of these gentlemen—-Go Warriors!!!
On defense we went from Aranda (now one of the best DC’s in the country and ranked 6th in 2014), to Kaumeyer, to Clune (assistant to Aranda) with Clune doing a good job for a year. Mason had some up and down years at SMU, but he had some shutouts and he held Nevada with Kaepernick to 10 points, and Fresno with Derek Carr to 10 points. Hopefully he will continue to build on what Clune did. As to Bailey, he will bring in more of a wide open passing game, but with some run balance– we should learn more about him soon– the key will be how much freedem will Chow give him and can the two get along.

The key will be getting these two in time for spring ball. Frankly, I am very surprised Coach Chow is bringing in an offensive coordinator. Perhaps he finally understands the value of good, experienced coaches, and I emphasize experienced coaches, to help him run the offense while he tends to head coaching duties.

Pono … I apologize for yesterday’s misunderstanding. I took your comment (#118) in the wrong way. I agree with you about high schools recruiting kids from other school. Even back in the 1960s, kids were being recruited by different high school. It wasn’t wide spread but, I had one experience when I was asked if I knew Howard Dunham to make a contact but he was already set at St. Louis to play with Jim Nicholson. It wasn’t the coaches back then … instead it was overly enthusiastic fans and alumni.
The key problem for kids going to schools like Punahou or Iolani is the highly competitive academic environment among your peers. It’s not malicious but kids who can’t keep up are at a real disadvantage. Ever year, Punahou will council several kids to go to another school. I don’t remember anyone being forced to leave except for being caught for fighting, but I know a few students have returned to public schools after problems with the stress of the academics.
Generally, kids are likely to enter Punahou in kindergarten, after 6th grade or after middle school. So recruiting has to happen early. I haven’t heard of anyone already in a local high school transferring to Punahou accept for strong academic reasons.
This is just from my experience. Again, sorry fro misunderstanding your meaning.

Hiring this OC and DC is the best move of Chow’s career–there is finally hope for the future of Warrior football! Hope that Chow does not interfere with the OC’s playcalling. He should just step back and focus on his Head Coach’s duties.

Can coach either the QB or WR, so that would mean either Wynn or Matthews is out (?).
Clune was LBs coach at Utah State but was Defensive Coordinator at Weber State under Ron McBride.
Here are my concerns (albeit far to early to count the chickens) . . .
1. With a new OC, how much restructuring will be needed on offense? With a new playbook and system (I would assume), I would the offense go through some pretty significant growing pains. I know we definitely need a new offensive mindset, and I am excited if this goes through.
2. If the offense struggles because of such growing pains, will Chow be buying himself another year as HC after yet another losing season at the excuse of “we implemented a new offense this year, so the struggles were to be expected.”?
Ah, forget the negativity. Let’s make this happen paper pushers at UH. Get it right for once.
