Warrior recruiting: 2020 vision

So, what’s your kid doing this summer?

Noah Sewell is pondering college plans. He already has a football scholarship offer from UH. Thing is, Noah is 14 and completing eighth grade at Desert Hills Middle School in St. George, Utah.

Noah isn’t a typical Generation X-Boxer. He is 6 feet and 230 pounds. Desert Hills Middle consists of eighth and ninth grades. Even though he will be a freshman this fall, he’ll still be in middle school but competing for Desert Hills High’s varsity. Some say he is good enough to start at linebacker as a freshman.

Offering a scholarship to an eighth grader is not unique to UH football. In 2009, Greg McMackin made post-dated offers to Reeve Koehler and Kamalei Correa. Koehler, who was 6-2 and 265 pounds when he was 13, and Correa ended up as Saint Louis School teammates. Koehler is at Arkansas; Correa, who attended Boise State, is in the NFL.

The Sewell family has long ties to UH coach Nick Rolovich, whom they met at an All-Poly Camp.

“We fell in love with him the first time we met him,” Noah’s father, Gabe Sewell Sr., said of Rolovich.

As Nevada’s offensive coordinator, Rolovich recruited linebacker Gabe Sewell Jr. to the Wolf Pack. Rolovich also is recruiting offensive lineman Penei Sewell, a junior-to-be at Desert Hills High.

Gabe Sewell Sr. said Rolovich visited his house while recruiting Gabe Jr. The elder Sewell said he told Rolovich: “Even without football, you’re welcome to come to our house anytime.”

Sewell Sr. said Feb. 5, 2020 — the first day Noah may sign a national letter of intent — is a long way away.

“He’s only in the eighth grade,” Sewell Sr. said, “and he might not know what he’s talking about, but he said: ‘I might get offers from Ohio (State), Michigan or whatever. I’ll still play in Hawaii as long as Rolo’s there.’ We love him.”

    First?

Rolo is a good man. I know he’ll be able to make more connections like with the Sewell ohana.

    It’s all about people skills.

  4. seewhy May 13, 2016 8:59 am

That’s right! If you are a genuine person, people will do the talking for you.

  5. legistlature May 13, 2016 9:13 am

History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. Sometimes people say, “Here is something new!” But actually it is old; nothing is ever truly new. We don’t remember what happened in the past, and in future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now.

I always thought it would be cool if the people in the future built the pyramids then went back in time. The whole time/continuum would be a circle of life.

We are getting philosophical today! It’s like Phil 101 all over again.

  8. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2016 9:42 am

How many philosophers does it take to change a light bulb?
It depends on how you define “change.”

  9. BigFan May 13, 2016 9:44 am

It’s the Lion King influence. lol.

  10. seewhy May 13, 2016 9:51 am

    That’s a good one, ST!

    RE: BigFan

I think so. Next thing we know, Rolo is going to buss out the Hakuna Matata.

philosophers -why rely on those who are powerless? The helpless cannot help us.

Generations come and generations go, but the earth never changes.

Is Reeve Koehler still at Arkansas? Dont see his name on the current roster. Maybe he gonna transfer to UH LOL wishful thinking.

Morning everybody ~ a couple of quick updates.

Mrs. SB and I have reserved Cabana A at Rainbow Bay Marina for the September and October home game tailgaters. We’ll get the cabana for the November games when the reservation window opens.

We received a call from the UH Athletics ticket office yesterday. They confirmed we wanted to move our football season tickets (out from behind the silly endzone net). Then they confirmed our new seats. An presto…two minutes total time and our new seats were all set. Easy, peasy. They said the tickets will be delivered about 2 weeks before the first game.

    Have a great weekend.

A wonderful Aloha Friday to all. I always liked 13. It’s a special day as was yesterday and tomorrow…and I hope everyone keeps making it so.

ST, I was thrilled to see you onboard again after your hiatus. It’s incredibly comforting to be able to visit the blog and see familiar handles as well as new ones. I don’t get to visit often and my comments are even less frequent. But I do visit when I can and enjoy the “clubhouse”.

SB’s post brought a wave of memories and prompted this post. Many thanks, SB, for all your efforts that allow the Tsaikos ohana to gather and indulge in the 5 F’s. It’s hard enough to make the reservations but the game day preparations means you’re there early and leaving late. Mahalo. I will make every possible effort to stop by for hugs and a refreshment.

Make every day a great one… // bg

Well, If recruiting is about building and maintaining relationships then the young kid’s interest might not waiver should he turn out to be a legit prospect and the big schools start making contact. Right?

  17. al May 13, 2016 10:58 am

bg…I was just wondering about you last night. A certain commercial initiated the vision. Good to see out here.

  18. bg May 13, 2016 11:05 am

I wanted to add…I haven’t felt this positive about Warrior football in a long, long time…since June was first hired. In my old age, I’ve tempered my expectations. But the excitement is there, under the lid I’ve constructed. Rolo brings the attributes to the table that I really like. And his wife and kids just cement that relationship to Hawaii. If Rolo adds some wins this year, I will break out that 21 yr old single malt scotch and toast to the brightness of 2016.

If you should get the chance, ask Rolo if he remembers what garlic butter shrimp tastes like. It was a tiny slice of time from long, long ago. // bg

  19. bg May 13, 2016 11:09 am

al, so glad to see you here too! I’m amazed they haven’t found a better commercial after all these years. I never was offended that people didn’t usually notice me… just the good looking lady I was with. Cheers, my friend!

    Hey bg — long time!

For all the new bloggers, 2007 was the defining year for the Tsai-kos and bg brought us all together for tailgates at Richardson Field. The spirit of bg and Kazz/Kevin earned them a spot in the Tsai-ko Hall of Fame…

The reservations for the Tsai-ko tailgates have been generously taken up by >b>SailorBlue, whose entry in the Tsai-ko Hall of Fame is imminent.

A while back I posted that Reeve was on track to graduate this spring from Arkansas. If so he could transfer & have 2 to play 2. But he really likes it there. He had some injuries during his career but heard he still is a beast.

  22. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2016 1:10 pm

    Big Wave:
I think Reeve actually graduated today.
He posted a picture of himself in cap and gown.

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid May 13, 2016 2:24 pm

Rolo has that way about him. His aloha is going a long way to put the program where it needs to be. Live Aloha, Play Warrior. So simple, yet so powerful.

Hey bg! -Just had brekky with our friend Kekoa and the Queen this morning. Sweety sends her aloha.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

From back in my day, I know the late Kenny Hewett, had an outstanding offer early on in HS, but certainly not during intermediate school. We were still playing German dodge-ball at that point….

Yup, 10 years in late July…
    Time for Blog Party 5?
(we stopped at 4) see http://stevem.altervista.org/photos/blogbash4.html

I think a certain Tsaikette hotel manager, Jaeger Bomber, and karaoke diva might still assist. 🙂
Maybe I can find a karaoke service provider too. 🙄

nice to see you on blog again – hope all is well with the family!!!

  28. A-House May 13, 2016 7:57 pm

i had great expectations from the current recruiting period, but an offer to an incoming HS freshman! wow, that’s very interesting!!!

IIRC, Gary Allen’s son also said he would attend UH – he was a very young RB for whatever team that was – he should be a little older than young Noah Sewell — anyone got an update on this?

any word on bringing in additional DL from the coaches efforts the past 12 days?

Joey Iosefa resigned with the Patriots today. I hope he makes the 65 limit in September.

  32. PONO May 13, 2016 9:14 pm

In recruiting there is a science but you also have to put in the work to build relationships with coaches and players. I believe that Rolo and staff are putting in more work then previous regimes. Whether that results in better recruits, time will tell but he is putting in the work which is all you can ask for.

  33. Ballpicker May 14, 2016 12:04 am

If I remember, Rolo also coined, “Loyal to the Soil.” Could have been someone else. OA….lol
    Aloha Friday all.
