Waianae D-lineman hopes to join Warriors

Defensive lineman Joey Nuuanu-Kuhiiki, a recent Waianae High graduate, is willing to accept an offer to join the Warriors as preferred walk-on this summer.

But that plan is contingent on Nuuanu-Kuhiiki securing money to pay for tuition and school expenses.

“If I can get the money together, I will make it,”said Nuuanu-Kuhiiki, who is awaiting responses on his applications for financial aid and non-football scholarships.

He said he turned down scholarship offers from Division II teams because his preference is to attend college in Hawaii.

“If I can play football and stay home, that would be great,” he said. “I can be with my family, and also play for my community and my state.”

Nuuanu-Kuhiiki, who is 6 feet 3 and 257 pounds, played defensive end and defensive tackle at Waianae. He received honorable mention on the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s all-state listing.

He also was a volunteer with the Seariders’ community program, cleaning beaches and reading to elementary-school students.

Nuuanu-Kuhiiki already has gained admission to UH. If he cannot meet the financial requirement, his backup plan is to enroll in the carpentry apprentice program at Honolulu Community College. For the fall semester, resident’s tuition and fees total $5,866 at UH-Manoa and $1,528 at HCC.

“If I can play (for the Warriors), that’s my primary thing,” he said.

I like that we are getting quality walk ons to help fill out the roster,Hawai’i has just been one of those programs where walk ons have shined it’s great too see that Rolo and staff understand the importance of that…

  3. turfwar June 7, 2016 9:44 am

Good luck to the young man in whatever he chooses. Hope he’s already met his fasfa requirements. If so he has a good chance at getting most if not all of his tuition covered and should find out shortly. Financial aid is not a guarantee but if he qualifies and he already has the grades no reason he can’t pursue a college education with or without football. Been working with a recent high school graduate on the same thing and while she got her frosh year covered she has to do this every year until she finishes school. Does not come without perserverance.

  4. madeinhawaii June 7, 2016 9:52 am

As a “preferred” walk-on, isn’t he just a semester away from a possible scholarship? A student loan wouldn’t be such a bad thing and if he secures a scholarship, he could use the COA to start paying off the loan. Good luck to the young man. Hope he makes it to UH.

If you’re a walkon and put on scholarship within the first two years, you count as one of the 25 initials. That’s why Makoa Camanse-Stevens and Noah Borden count as part of the 2016 class.

  9. letsgowarriors June 7, 2016 10:25 am

hell yeah! i love this kid, i really hope he can make it.

Welcome and good luck to Joey Nuuanu-Kuhiiki!

  11. haka June 7, 2016 10:53 am

Hope Joey gets the aid he needs to become a Warrior, but even more so to get a degree. Sacrificing in hopes of fulfilling your dreams is awesome. He’s already a Warrior!

This kid has a dream and plan. Would love to see Joey at UH!

  13. madeinhawaii June 7, 2016 11:15 am

Two years? Whoa lots of out of pocket change there. That two-year thing has always had me confused. So the only advantage as a preferred walk-on is a guaranteed spot on the 105 roster? What if he grey-shirted, instead, and came to school part-time? Could he go on scholarship the next season? If he walked on in Spring?

  14. J-Dog June 7, 2016 11:26 am

Rolo filling out the D-Line which depth-wise was our thinnest area (irony) with lots of beefy walk-ons. If somehow Kennedy is allowed to return, we should be OK at those positions. Now hoping that they can get the DB depth up as well.

what about the Kamehameha Schools grants?

  18. madeinhawaii June 7, 2016 12:12 pm

al, lots of possibilities for a Poly kid in good standing. Here’s a few contritubed by a member of our facebook page.
“He should be able to qualify fior a pell grant and other manoa grants if he has completed his FAFSA most of the tuition should be covered, he may also have to apply for a student loan to cover this first year. Since he is Hawaiian he can try to apply for the Pili Pono Grant through the College Opportunity program if they can help him this year. If not Next year if he is still a walk on, he can apply for the KSBE Pauahi Scholarship, Na Ho’okama thru – KSBE, Hawaiian grants at UH Pili Pono and the Kua’ana Tuition Waiver grant. There is a lot of funds available for Hawaiians to take advantage of at UH. “

  19. Stephen Tsai June 7, 2016 12:29 pm

There’s a sibling already in college so his family does not want to assume more college debt. Just remember, you can’t default on a student loan, not even through bankruptcy.

  20. Stephen Tsai June 7, 2016 12:31 pm

A grayshirt means delaying enrollment for a semester. His two-year clock would start in January and he wouldn’t be eligible to play this season.

  21. Stephen Tsai June 7, 2016 12:36 pm

I know people say $12,000 a year isn’t a lot compared to mainland colleges. But it is a lot, especially for the only four-year public university in the state. There’s a proposed tuition hike but that’s mainly to pay for the backlog of maintenance/construction projects. If the Legislature doesn’t want to further subsidize higher ed, that’s fine, but don’t be surprised if more and more students are priced out.

  22. madeinhawaii June 7, 2016 12:36 pm

So, they must see him playing this season as a true freshman. Sort of a KT replacement.

  23. Ipu Man June 7, 2016 12:45 pm

Wonder if we Tsaikos can create a scholarship fund. Hmmmmmm….

  24. jim white June 7, 2016 1:09 pm

I’m not rich -retired -I have donated to na koa but if a fund gets started I’m in -aloha -cape coral fl

  25. SteveM June 7, 2016 1:10 pm

    RE: #11
Ipu Man — I would think something like that would be under the purview of Na Koa.
BTW, I made my modest annual contribution to Na Koa this year. Last year it went to AKA at the stadium–that was confusing. Na Koa directly supports the football team only.

  26. SteveM June 7, 2016 1:12 pm

ooops — my comment should have referenced #22 (Ipu Man)

  27. tom-warriornation June 7, 2016 1:42 pm

If a scholarship fund is OK with the NCAA; then I will be willing to chip in!

  28. A-House June 7, 2016 2:17 pm

a scholarship fund can bring a lot of headache to whomever wants to “manage” it – creation of a qualification guide for students; criteria on who sits on selection board; who selects the board members; etc and on and on.

perhaps there is a deep pocket out there who is willing to grant a “no interest” loan payable in 3 years

  29. tom June 7, 2016 3:06 pm

    GOOD AFTERNOON, HAWAII!

I hope not = would be a major NCAA violation.

  30. st. anthony trojan June 7, 2016 4:25 pm

Awww tom.. you had to kill all the good vibes we all were having to help… he he he…..but you are right.. just follow the rules… just maybe sumone can put a 50, $100 dollar bills in envelope n place his mama mail box… n be a “mana from heaven”…. he he he he ,

  32. tom June 7, 2016 6:48 pm

Sorry if I was too gruff.
Having worked part time while going to school, I can understand Joey Nuuanu-Kuhiiki task of trying to afford to go to school without over burdening his family.

I hope that he is able to get an academic scholarship or a partial or a student loan until he can get a athletic scholarship.

  33. cheepono June 7, 2016 8:07 pm

    heard muti is gone. fresno.

  34. HawaiiMongoose June 7, 2016 8:49 pm

If Muti is really gone to Fresno State, I hope UH didn’t grant him a release from his NLI, allowing him to go on scholarship immediately for the Bulldogs. I don’t wish the young man ill but there need to be consequences for backing out on a written commitment in order to suit up for a conference competitor, otherwise a precedent is set for others to do it.

  35. burro sabio June 7, 2016 9:04 pm

Why are people trying to award scholarships? Isn’t that Rolo’s job?

  36. cappie the dog June 7, 2016 9:05 pm

Anybody notice that Jerome Williams signed with the Cardinals? Kolten has a friend in Memphis.

  37. burro sabio June 7, 2016 9:12 pm

Cappie, I’d rather see him with his friend Garcia in St. Louis 🙂

  38. H-Man June 7, 2016 9:27 pm

I enjoyed the video of Joey that Kapakahi provided. Much thanks. Joey looks to be a really good addition to the Warriors. Hoping he gets financial aid through one of the Hawaiian grants mentioned by madeinhawaii.

  39. kev-1 June 7, 2016 9:32 pm

    Re: college debt

For so many, the decision to go to college rests on the willingness to get a school loan. I wonder why people hesitate less when it is time to get that car loan.

  40. Old School Dave June 7, 2016 9:41 pm

UH granted Muti a release from his NLI:

  41. 808warriorfan June 7, 2016 9:56 pm

GOOD LUCK BRAH … it’s sad when a kid like this who is college eligible can’t make it due to the cost …

  42. turfwar June 7, 2016 9:59 pm

Thanks for the link OSD. Now we can put this story to rest.

  43. NorthShoreFan June 7, 2016 10:08 pm

for Muti, the grass looks greener on the other side.

  44. Maddog50 June 8, 2016 12:58 am

Coach Rolovich is a class act. He is on record as saying-“we only want those who want to be here” in my opinion FSU and a few others in MW are smoldering dumpster fires waiting to trend downHill-pun intended! The incoming class has more than a few impact kids. The recent additions will help and I do believe KT’s situation will have similar outcome to KG. Imua! Go Warriors!!!!!

  45. cappie the dog June 8, 2016 3:29 am

$5866 is relatively low compared to other state universities, but that is still a lot of money. The timing of this web piece couldn’t be more perfect. I think Bernie as president must have looked pretty good to Mr. Nuuanu-Kiihiki. Going to college, and health care, are rights, not privileges. I am willing to get into the first fist-fight of my life if I hear one more person confuse communism with socialism. Usually, I open with: “Is Sweden the former U.S.S.R.?”

  46. amela June 8, 2016 5:27 am

UH should lower their standards so we can recruit better players like Fresno. It’s sad that he couldn’t wait to come to UH. Hope Agasiva stays home.

  47. Jack June 8, 2016 6:45 am

Does he qualify for Pell Grant? Isnt that up to something like $5500 a year now. One problem I see with students from the lower performing schools is that they are not educated on scholarship applications and deadlines or the FAFSA.

  48. Jack June 8, 2016 6:48 am

and dont put down Muti unless you know the facts. He wanted to play for UH all his life but circumstances did not permit it so he got his release, which he was entitled to and looked for other places to go.

  49. st. anthony trojan June 8, 2016 7:25 am

IS ok….when one walks away from a scholarship…it means Mr. Rolo has one more to offer to sumone that wants to be here…

  50. st. anthony trojan June 8, 2016 7:31 am

    # 45….do agree you….should see the standards imposed on the rest of the conference as far as GPA is concerned… n take n average all can live with…. n level the playing field for the our student ATHLETES in all sports.
