D-lineman set to join Warriors

This past spring, Cole Carter bought a spear and a knife and went spear-fishing.

This fall, Carter hopes to hunt ball-carriers.

Carter, a 6-foot-4, 265-pound defensive lineman from everywhere, is set to join the Warriors as a preferred walk-on this summer.

Carter was at Stone Bridge High in Virginia before enrolling at Fork Union Military Academy in 2015 to improve his grades. He missed most of the 2015 season — his only semester at the prep academy — because of a shoulder injury.

He said he is almost fully recovered.

“I started lifting really heavy a couple of weeks ago,” said Carter, who has gained admission into UH.

Carter had football offers from schools on the East Coast, but opted to move to Hawaii, where his parents relocated. His parents both work for the government.

Carter was born in California, then moved to Thailand when he was 4. Six years later, he moved to Arizona. His sophomore year, he moved to Ashburn, Va. At Stone Bridge High, he competed in football and wrestling. He also is an accomplished swimmer. He is capable of running 40 yards in sub-4.8 seconds.

This past spring, he rejoined his family in Ko Olina.

His next stop is Manoa.

Love all the D-Line walk ons. Cole looks like an athlete – a few more pounds on him from the weight room will be good.

We are getting some nice walk on guys this summer.

  6. What??? June 8, 2016 9:33 am

At the very least Lempa won’t have to use a walk-on fullback as his backup nose tackle.

  7. turfwar June 8, 2016 9:41 am

Did Cole just literally walk into Rolo’s office and offer his services? A very timely gift if that is the case. Cool story ST.

We sure are stocking up on DL via walk ons. Esp important since Muti dropped us for Fresno. That one hurts.

  11. turfwar June 8, 2016 9:55 am

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1640538/highlights/187648378 Man this guy really could be a gift. Lucky for us he got injured. Athletic and runs very very well. In a year he’ll be close to 280 and ready to contribute. He’s a scholarship guy just waiting for one to open. Doubt Cole will be a walk-on for very long. Great get. If he has hands maybe even a tight end but keeping him at DE will definitely help the DL position.

  12. madeinhawaii June 8, 2016 10:51 am

With Muti backing out of his scholarship deal and moving on to Fresno, does that mean that Joey Nuuanu-Kuhiiki could get the open scholarship, if necessary. Or is there a different pecking order? A first come first serve for preferred walk-ons?

    MadeinHawaii:
They granted Muti a release from his LOI a month ago.
They gave Muti’s scholarship to Alesana “Alex” Sunia last week.

    looks like another luke shawley!

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid June 8, 2016 11:29 am

Not Nasti – Thanks for the Cole highlights. He looks good tp go – that is a nice pick up for the Warriors!!!

  16. madeinhawaii June 8, 2016 11:34 am

Ah.. no wonder those Muti rumors were already floating around a month ago. Oh well, still got some time before school starts. Hopefully, he’ll find some way.

  17. Makai June 8, 2016 11:36 am

I’m ok with the release of Muti from his LOI. Why didn’t they have restrictions on his release like not going to another MW program?

  18. NorthShoreFan June 8, 2016 11:52 am

Everyone changes direction on their life journey. Hopefully, we all pick the right path. We change jobs, occupations etc. No different from what high school graduates are faced with. As an institution of higher learning, we should all focus on what our kids want to do, including on where they want to play sports. The institutions should not be putting up road blocks on our kids.
IMHO, by having kids sitting out a year and possibly losing eligibility, does it help our kids or does it help the institutions more? Punishment for choosing the wrong program?
Anyhoo, since when did the NCAA make any sense?

  19. z June 8, 2016 11:56 am

    Nice pickup.

  20. Ron June 8, 2016 11:57 am

Rolo not only talks the talk, he walks the walk. He only wants guys who want to be here and if they don’t fine but why burn a bridge.

  21. Derek June 8, 2016 12:21 pm

Welcome Mr. Carter. From what I saw on film he has a very good bull rush and uses his hands well. Mr. Carter moves very well too and goes after the ball carrier until the tackle is made. In other words, he finishes. Good size and his ceiling is high.

  22. Maddog50 June 8, 2016 1:32 pm

Sorting thru this pile of walk ons gonna get 2-4 gems!!!! Go Warriors

6-4, 265 with sub 4.8 speed DL walk on?
Welcome to the Warrior Ohana, Cole Carter! I look forward to seeing you in the backfield of the opponent’s offense in Coach Lempa’s defense.

  27. 3-Prong June 8, 2016 4:05 pm

Good frame. Hit the weight room,….Good To Go (Bows!).

  28. oldtimer808 June 8, 2016 5:54 pm

I commend our coaches for finding all these preferred walkons. Our D-line needed help and may have some gems. Cole looks to have good feet and balance. This is getting pretty exciting and I have confidence this team will prosper under Rolo.

  29. burro sabio June 8, 2016 7:16 pm

MIH, why do you think Joey Nuuanu-Kuhiiki should get a scholarship and not Johnny Anae, Ramsey Aviu, Taaga Tuulima, Laakea Look, Kaimana Padello, Kyle Gallup, Tyrus Tuiasosopo, Cole Carter, or even Terrence Sayles or Zeno Choi?

  30. cappie the dog June 8, 2016 10:54 pm
