UH now opens season at UMass on Aug. 26

The Warriors will open the 2017 football season on the road against UMass on Aug. 26.

The game originally was scheduled for Oct. 7.

The Warriors took advantage of an exemption that allows them to open play on so-called Week Zero — a week ahead of the usual start to the football season. The exemption usually applies to UH’s home games. But the Warriors received an NCAA waiver making the exemption applicable for a road game.

Was the move done to create an extra bye in the middle of the season? I doubt they’d be able to find anyone to fill that October spot considering the rest of the teams will be in conference play already.

On another blog, it was posted that Rolo made a “House Call” yesterday,

at the Maui LB’s home. I hope that all went well.

Today, Rolo’s on the way to the 9th island.

I like this week zero game. No schoolwork before the game so it gives the players an extra week of study in actual classrooms to help make up for all that travel time in the air and hotel time away.

Not to mention being the 1st game of the year. If they could get a waiver every season, maybe playing the 1st game away, might not be such a bad idea.

  5. jet January 24, 2017 10:54 am

I wish we kept the original date as I already had a trip scheduled and I will be in NYC on that original date weekend. Plus the original date would have nicer cooler weather and the leaves would be turning color.

  6. ai-eee-soos January 24, 2017 10:58 am

a 12-game season is fine with me; it’s easier to get to 6-6, than 7-6.

Yeah, we’ll lose the revenue from the 13th game, but we’re in a re-building mode
now. Don’t know what the future schedules are – but we can work on future 13 game skeds as our team gets stronger and deeper.

  7. DoubleB January 24, 2017 11:03 am

Here’s to hoping that all Rolo and his staffs efforts are fruitful this recruiting cycle. I’ve been a season ticket holders since the JJ days. Rolo and his staff have taken a big step towards returning UH to competing on that level again with their own flair and style. The Bowl win rates as one of my favorite games EVER!! ESPN ran that fake punt about a thousand times 😉 … just awesome. I for one am excited for the future.

  8. madeinhawaii January 24, 2017 11:05 am

If the NCAA would allow it, a week Zero East of the Rockies would be great every year. As the first game of the season, it’s most likely to get some kind of network sponsor, as well as, a lot of exposure. They could work out some kind of better payout deal with the team they’re playing based on a percentage of any network deal AND they wouldn’t have to play a P5 opponent. UH could use that money and, if the other team isn’t a P5 team, so could they.

North Shore–Generally speaking, a scholarship or fellowship is tax free if you are a degree candidate and the award is used to pay for tuition and required fees, books, supplies and equipment, however there are some scholarship and fellowship opportunities that are not tax exempt.

  10. NorthShoreFan January 24, 2017 11:30 am

boolakanaka…Mahalo for the insight. Seems this stipend can and will be taxable unless it’s used for rent and food. No sending it back home to mom and dad.

  11. Dennis Nakano January 24, 2017 11:39 am

Isn’t the first 9K pretty much tax free, anyway?

  12. boolakanaka January 24, 2017 11:48 am

Hmmmn, interesting questions–According to the IRS’s website relating to taxable and non-taxable scholarships, “A stipend is defined as a fixed sum of money paid periodically for services or to defray expenses . . . The income from stipends is reportable.”

So, it makes it taxable, but at their income levels, the tax burden becomes rather negligible. My original point was to say that not all FB scholarships are equal, and like anything else, folks shop around for the biggest value….

Good first game for the Warriors. I’m sure that the Minutemen will want another shot at our guys in their house. Gonna be fun!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Rolo is in Arizona trying to close the deal with the big time OT Vanterpool! A must get to finish out this class.

  15. BigWave96744 January 24, 2017 1:50 pm

Fun fact, this will be the first time that Hawaii opens against the same team they ended the previous regular season against

  16. Stephen Tsai January 24, 2017 1:50 pm

Does “another blog” mean Rolo’s tweets? lol

  17. SteveM January 24, 2017 1:51 pm

UMass now on August 26, 2017.
Got the Tsai-ko 2017 Away Game Logistics and Party Planner updated:

A-House & UH4eva — are you still tentatively going? Please update me.

  18. haka January 24, 2017 1:59 pm

    Yes indeed!
    Seal the deal!
    And in a couple weeks,
    When the ink is dry,
We will all be very happy!
    Indeed!
    Go Warriors!

    RE: #5
ai-eee-soos — I thought Oct. 7 would be a good bye week before MWC play, but was told that MWC play started already. Since the conference schedule has not been released yet, Oct. 7 will probably be filled.

We still do not have a 13th game this year, could use the revenue…and, ahem, a 6 win season might be sufficient again if the bowl situation does not change. Good or bad, lets take on a 13th game. No fear, right?

  20. ai-eee-soos January 24, 2017 2:45 pm

#18 SteveM: I “hear” what you’re saying, but for this year, for me, a 12 game sked is OK.

As our team gets bigger, stronger, faster, and more depth is added; yeah, I’d be comfortable with a 13 game sked.

Another point, the 13th game should be at home, against an “attractive” team of our level. And, as our team grows, this opponent can be a P5. In fact, in one future year, I think we got 3 Big Boys scheduled. We’re moving on up – the future looks promising.

  21. clyde January 24, 2017 3:05 pm

If UH can’t book a 13th game — after the Sept. 9 game at UCLA and before MWC play starts (guessing Sept. 30) — it will have two bye weeks in a row (Sept. 16 and Sept. 23), which is a long time between games so early in the season.

  22. Akamai Okole January 24, 2017 3:45 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

Is it BaseBow season yet? 😆

  23. islandman January 24, 2017 3:49 pm

Looks like a tough first game. UMass will be aiming to pay back for the loss from the past season. They lost only 46-40 to UH. They have some athletes, returning will be their QB Ford, 342 yds, 3 TD’s; WR Isabella, 134 yds ; RB Marquis Young,117 net yds; TE Breneman etc.

  24. Don Weir January 24, 2017 4:21 pm

    Calling all Letterwinners
UH vs UCLA on September 9 is a game with convenience of travel (LAX) and accomodations.
It is time to organize those of us in Hawai’i and those of us on the mainland for a pre game and or post game event. It is my hope the Letterwinners Club will work on logistics.
Tom Kitaguchi please contact me asap.

  25. Ipu Man January 24, 2017 4:45 pm

Logistics planning should be fun for Dave Matlin for
game at U-Mass. Or does that fall on Rolo’s shoulders?

  26. Aaron January 24, 2017 7:21 pm

because we had to count an FCS win towards our win total this past season, doesn’t that mean that we can’t do it again next season and would have to win 7 to become bowl eligible?

  27. A-House January 24, 2017 7:52 pm

    #24:

I believe they will ask Panda Travel to work out the logistics.

their office is located withing the athletic complex and official travel agent for UH

  28. A-House January 25, 2017 6:42 am

    SteveM:

with the change to 8/26/17 — we need to look at commitments before deciding to go to UMass.

  29. A-House January 25, 2017 6:45 am

holy moly Andy — no posts for nearly 12 hours — yikes, a symbol of things to come?

or, lack of interest before signing day?

  30. Maddog50 January 25, 2017 6:49 am

According to Scouts. Micah Vanderpool is a Warrior. 6.5 250 OL. GoWarriors!!!!

  31. Maddog50 January 25, 2017 7:00 am

Hey A-House get out da bed! Should be Vanterpool-

  32. kanak January 25, 2017 7:03 am

    Hanapaa!

Central OT Micah Vanterpool (@im_micah55) commits to Hawaii. Look for the story later today on @Sports360AZ. @JacksonM_Scout @jason247scout

  33. Maddog50 January 25, 2017 7:31 am

With the latest addition I figure about six scholarships left, if Coach Rolovich holds a few back means 4 to go. This includes late signees last year of Dru Brown et al. And the fact Tago does not count as an original year. So I figure An RB or two maybe and OL and some defenders. Almost done. I think the final number on signing day last year was something like 14 so the roster will get a large boost this year with 20 plus-GoWarriors!!!

  34. boolakanaka January 25, 2017 8:04 am

Really like this tackle pick-up from Arizona. As Jeezy already stated, he is a real up and comer. Great frame, and while a tad light and unexperienced, recent history has shown, with good coaching (Chris Naeole) and hitting the weight room, we may have gotten a tremendous sleeper…..he looks prototype at left tackle.

  35. Ipu Man January 25, 2017 8:19 am

As long as the players have lower body strength too
(thick legs)… They are usually the best running backs,
wide receivers, centers, tackles, guards, defensive line,
tight ends, kickers, et al except cheer leaders 🙂

  36. jojo January 25, 2017 8:39 am

I’m not going to the UMASS game but I’ll be going to the UHvsUCLA game! See me there. Or here. Or at my office. Manapua is ok.

  37. Sangamon Keith January 25, 2017 9:36 am

We can dream that we’ll get Falele to sign with UH. Imagine Kavapalu and Fatelle on right side of offensive line … probably could put two tailbacks over 1,000 yards in a season.

  38. A-House January 25, 2017 9:43 am

    Maddog50:

your #31 – usual day starts for me waking at 3 am HST and in 24Hour Fitness by 3:30 — all pau by 4:45am — in office by 6:20-30 — go home about 2:45 pm

while Faafele would be a recruiting coup for UH — sadly, with all the Power5 schools after him, it’s a multi- million-to-one chance!

    yet, spring is eternal!!!

  39. A-House January 25, 2017 9:54 am

    Sangamon:

me likes Faalele on the left side and Kavapalu on the right to protect whomever the QB maybe.

would Coach Rolo make a special visit after the UMass game to visit Faalele? doesn’t hurt

  40. H-Man January 25, 2017 10:28 am

Scout shows Blessman Taala has committed to Hawaii.

  41. Observer5 January 25, 2017 10:34 am

Yes, Rolo and Stutzman was seen in Kihei visiting Maui High LB Faleti Afamui.
Vandy Coach Derek Mason and C.J. Ah You also visited Afamui couple weeks back.
