Phoenix O-lineman commits to Warriors

Two big assets — Hawaii’s people and cuisine — helped the Warriors land offensive lineman Micah “Big Mike” Vanterpool of Central High School in Phoenix.

Vanterpool took a UH-sponsored recruiting trip the past weekend.

“When I went to Hawaii, it felt like home,” said Vanterpool, who is 6 feet 6 and 286 pounds. “Everyone there was so accepting. I saw how much love is on the island. I thought, ‘man, this place is incredible.’”

Asked about the highlights of the visit, Vanterpool said: “the food in Hawaii is so delicious. We went to this restaurant called Side Street (Inn). Oh, so delicious.”

Vanterpool also received offers from Boise State, UNLV, Northern Colorado, UC Davis and New Mexico State.

He is projected to compete at guard for UH.

Vanterpool said he competes in the discus and shot put. He has been training in the 100 meters to improve his hip flexibility and explosion.

Good news on recent commit-as Hawk Harrelson White Sox announcer says “you can put it on the board!”

  2. bowwar January 25, 2017 10:55 am

Sat across him in the plane and got to speak to him and his mother. Very good kid and he is SOLID. Believe it or not, I think he is still growing, so I think he still is probably a tackle versus a guard. I think he’ll be a great Warrior!

  3. Ohana Hawaii January 25, 2017 10:56 am

Like, I told everyone in Las Vegas! They’re is no place like restaurants, drive-in and home cooking in all Hawaii islands!. Then the mainland cooking! They’re over cook, not the same taste like Hawaii!. And the most Ohana then the mainland!

A-House I was just kidding I’m just sitting at the desk following recruit updates! Bless man is indeed on the scorecard at Scouts. Stephen mentioned that his situation was complicated-I take it now to be cleared up! Welcome Blessman! When you go to the scouts scorecard we are now at #96 with 18 listed……Wyoming is just ahead but have 19 commits not 15 as ranking shows. With a strong close we can reach at least middle of the pack in MW.

  5. ai-eee-soos January 25, 2017 10:58 am

This blurb from ST’s column in the SA, re Vanterpool …

” Vanterpool has an unweighted cumulative grade-point average of 3.7, ranking 13th out of Central’s 421 seniors. “

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

and the great news keep Roloing in! Keep it coming!
    E Komo Mai new Warriors!
Coach knows we probably won’t get our best kids to stay home. The lure of bright lights and big money will take most, if not all of them away but we will get the ones from out of state to come and build our Warrior program to new heights. The ones who WANT to be WARRIORS! That’s the ones who will MAKE THE WARRIORS GREAT AGAIN!

  7. NotNasti January 25, 2017 11:10 am

We NEED Miles Reed, Centennial RB.

  8. whitey January 25, 2017 11:11 am

Now we need Daniel Faalele from Australia. Super size our line

  9. NorthShoreFan January 25, 2017 11:11 am

MAKE THE WARRIORS GREAT AGAIN!…this is not an alternative fact. It will happen!

  10. Sangamon Keith January 25, 2017 11:15 am

Now we need to get 3-star recruits Casey Roddick (6-5, 335), Alfred Edwards (6-7, 275) or both. We need to dominate the offensive line.

  11. Derek January 25, 2017 11:41 am

Vanterpool’s highlight film showed he played Left Tackle so I see him moving to that spot after Allen graduates. Like the guy said, he’s solid, great student. I think Rolo is withholding some commitments until the last second so other colleges can’t poach them. As for Ah Hoy, he should make his decision now, either Oregon State or Hawaii so in fairness, both teams can move forward and make other offers. It shouldn’t take that long to talk to your family about where you want to study and play football for the next 4 or 5 years. Just follow what’s in his heart. Go, good luck. Stay, still good luck. No problem. But, we want UH players who want to be Warriors, whether they are from here or from other states or countries.

With 7 scholarships left to give this year, I think we need a RB, a QB, 2 DE/Pass Rusher, OLB, Athlete, DL or another OL.

  12. Haleakala January 25, 2017 11:43 am

Mike Vanterpool will be a great student-athlete at Hawaii. Welcome!

  13. A-House January 25, 2017 12:40 pm

for those local athletes choosing to go away — good luck!

at some point in time, UH will be loaded and “kick-back” may not be an alternative be it football, softball, VB, BB

“happy trails to you” where ever you go!

  14. Sangamon Keith January 25, 2017 12:41 pm

Do we have a full 25 scholarships to award? Last year we only had 21.

I know they aren’t shown on Scout commits but I believe 2 scholarships are for Eugene Ford (DB) and Kalepo Naotala (DT). If so we’ve used 20 scholarships at this point. I would assume we are holding three for Miles Reed (RB), Feleti Afemui (LB) and Nicholas Kapule (QB). That leaves two if we have 25 … I would hold them for Casey Roddick (3-star 6-5, 330 OT who decommited from Cal recently) and T.J. Mauga (3-star 6-5, 260, DE).

Can anyone confirm number of scholarships available?

  15. Maddog50 January 25, 2017 12:42 pm

SK #10 Edwards committed to USU yesterday, but still a lot of unsigned talent. I too agree that if you don’t know now you will never know. Pull the trigger and commit now. Nothing changes between now and next Wednesday except a few doors now open will be closed/GoWarriors!!!!

  16. A-House January 25, 2017 12:44 pm

will Coach Rolo get more interior DL?

seems he is happy what’s in the house and holding out on 1 or 2 more so no poachers like Oregon State.

lie – cheat – or steal: win if you can – lose if you must – but, always cheat! Mrs Pestrado.

  17. madeinhawaii January 25, 2017 12:46 pm

I think we’re lucky if there are still three scholarships left to offer.

  18. Bogey January 25, 2017 1:35 pm

Zwahalen & Reily left, 2 or more medical retirement. Tago don’t count.
Think we got more spots available.

  19. Lowtone123 January 25, 2017 1:42 pm

I agree with Derek, the article says he will compete at guard but he should be allowed to compete at tackle first. He played left tackle in high school and also played basketball so he may have the quick feet necessary to play the position in college.

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid January 25, 2017 2:02 pm

Excellent news. Loving the size of the new big guys.

Welcome Mr. Vanterpool! Hope I see you at Rainbow Drvie-In!

    Mad dog:
    Situation remains complicated.

  22. papajoe2 January 25, 2017 3:53 pm

A-House, #16~ I remember that quote from Handsome Johnny Barend.

  23. Maddog50 January 25, 2017 4:41 pm

    Got it

  24. Warbow January 25, 2017 4:49 pm

Looks like we loss another commit. Rolo put out the no poachers sign again.

  25. Ipu Man January 25, 2017 5:05 pm

He runs the 100 meters? Wonder what his time is…
Maybe he should be our wide receiver like Atlanta Falcons
    Julio Jones 🙂 🙂 🙂

  26. RoyGBivs January 25, 2017 5:26 pm

Hey? Any 13th (home) game added for 2017, is too late to schedule one. We should always play 13…

  27. al January 25, 2017 5:56 pm

    MiH…more than that.

  28. al January 25, 2017 5:59 pm

I think Pun QB will be a grey shirt if he accepts and/or we agree.

  29. Abunai January 25, 2017 6:10 pm

#24 Really? I don’t see it. I know he made a comment couple days ago.

  30. slenzi January 25, 2017 7:20 pm

#13 A-House, is I’m surprised at you. Never close the door to home grown talent that wants to return. What you say is true, but never close the door.

  31. snowmantoo January 25, 2017 7:36 pm

@24: we don’t have any local commits left to poach!

  32. Warbow January 25, 2017 7:41 pm

Actually coach Moody just retweeted Rolo’s no poachers sign. Maybe the linebacker from Samoa

  33. A-House January 25, 2017 8:51 pm

    slenzi:

no closure of door — not my call to make, but I do hope in my life time UH will be close or at that position that a ‘kick back” may not have a place on the team

    wonderful dream!!!

  34. Derek January 25, 2017 9:53 pm

Brandon Kipper is a big dude. Anybody who is a wrestler knows how to use leverage and also hold the line of scrimmage. I see nothing but potential and a big upside. Rule #1, stop the run. Check.

  35. Huh? January 25, 2017 10:34 pm

    “kick-back” what is that?
You mean “bounce back” don’t you.

  36. Maddog50 January 26, 2017 3:09 am

It goes “quiet” on the 29th and dead on the 30th thru signing day. So three days left for things to clear up and settle. I think a few will wait till it goes dead before announcing so as to avoid uncomfortable conversations. In my mind decisions are already made, so we will see-

  37. Sangamon Keith January 26, 2017 3:51 am

Add another commit. 3-star OL/DL BRANDON KIPPER (6-6, 280) of Nampo, ID had committed to UH!

  38. A-House January 26, 2017 6:36 am

    #35: same smell!

  39. slenzi January 26, 2017 7:21 am

#34 Derek, many successful D-linemen have also had a background in wrestling. You take a 6’4″ 198 pound wrestler and tell him he no longer has to worry about his weight, that can make a killer D-lineman – endurance, leverage, resistance to injury, flexibility, etc, not to mention the will to win the one-on-one battles.

  40. Maddog50 January 26, 2017 7:42 am

Don’t know about Kipper outside of his tweet, does not show on any recruiting board. Looks like CSU, USU, AF are done or at 25. Fresno at 23 and SJSU at 20, everybody else in upper and middle teens. Looking to close this out on a high note

  41. Ipu Man January 26, 2017 8:00 am

Rolo keeps on lassoing in the rawhide.
Like the song says, Rolling, Rolling, 🙂

  42. Derek January 26, 2017 8:59 am

One thing about Rolo and his staff is that they do a great job in evaluating talent. The recruits might be a little under the radar, but if you look at the ability, athleticism, size, height, etc. you can see that these players can play. I say this because last year’s recruits are already making a big impact on the field. Look at these guys as freshman who play quite a big and contributed:

    Kalakaua Timoteo
    Keala Santiago
    Kalen Hicks
    Cameron Hayes
    Kaimala Padello
    Roe Farris
    Solomon Matautia
    John Ursua

Also, some guys who we know can play, but redshirted will be big contributers this coming year. Guys like:

    Fred Holly
    Myckal Tolliver
    Cole Carter
    Max Hendrie

I know I’ve overlooked some guys too so I apologize, but the point is that all of these guys can play Division I football. I really like the size of this years group. There is size on the line and height in the receivers. I like it when a 6’6″ 280 OL/DL is a standout football player, a state champion heavyweight wrestler, and a student body president to boot, not to mention a 3.8 GPA and already has a qualifying score on his SAT. Right there you can see Rolo and Co. are getting the right kind of guys for our program. We still need a RB, pass rusher, OLB, ATH, QB, and maybe a great K. The emphasis on the rest of the class is playmakers. Unfortunately, I don’t see a QB on the horizon unless Rolo has a surprise. Last year, the surprise was Cole McDonald. He was never mentioned at all until letter of intent signing day. That was a well kept secret. Brown and Brownholtz were signed later in the spring and summer.

  43. NotNasti January 26, 2017 9:43 am

Derek: True freshman Ikem Okeke was a beast on special teams all year. In the bowl game, he played extensively, utilizing his speed at OLB.
