Game day: San Jose State
SAN JOSE — The Warriors are seeking their second consecutive MWC victory — and first road win since 2014 — when they play San Jose State at 10:30 a.m. Hawaii time.
Storylines:
> Spartan quarterback Kenny Potter is expected to play despite knee and ankle injuries. Their leading rusher, freshman Zamore Zigler, is not expected to play.
> SJSU linebacker Christian Tago will be at full strength. Tago missed the first three games because of a meniscus injury. He was placed on a 35-play limit against Iowa State two weeks ago. He played all 72 defensive snaps against New Mexico last week. Tago, a graduate student, said he was “really shocked Hawaii didn’t recruit me out of high school. Coming out of high school, I always liked Hawaii. They were on the top of my charts being Polynesian. … I emailed the coaches. I showed them my highlight tapes. I never got anything back from them.”
> The Spartans have parlayed nine takeaways into 24 points. Opponents have turned 11 takeaways into 64 points, including two pick-sixes.

I guess the matchups are difficult to find.

Go Warriors!!
Go get um boys!!! Play four quarters of hi intensity football and snatch that road win for Warrior Nation.
Go Bows, Come
home with a Victory
and be glad you are not playing
on the east coast. Interesting tv Notre Dame game
mentioned that the NC State qb
is also a graduate student…transferred
from the frosty confines of Boise.
Plays like them, too.
Where is Tago from? Cali?
Another reason why Chow is not the head coach. How do us on the mainland watch this game? The MWC website said OC-16 is the reason their not showing it . C mon Hawaii SMH
Kimpira!
Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Game Day!…got the eggs, pancakes, 100% maple syrup, rice, bacon, ham, sausage and ube buns ready to go…now wat else?…kope!
Sometimes U get em all some times not…Tago might have been a miss…but…
New coach, new attitude, new schemes…new day!
Looking for a WIN!
IMUA WARRIORS!
“Because of a technical situation, the matchups/previews did not make it into the Star-Advertiser’s online editions. We apologize for the omission. However, you can see the story in the newspaper …”
Being on the mainland, I woke up looking for the matchups online. I was hugely disappointed. You might as well have worded it like this:
“Due to a convergence of technological and business issues, the Star-Advertiser has chosen not to distribute its UH matchups/previews via online platforms at this time. The Star-Advertiser is continuing to search for a solution that will allow appropriate distribution of the Star-Advertiser UH matchups/previews on platforms both inside and outside of the Hawai’i market.”
BTW,
The matchups are online. You just have to dig for it.
This season, San Jose don’t even know which side of the field to tun toward.
This is Hawaii’s game to lose. So, thise gentlemen would do well to secure the win sometimes.
Go Bows!! Get that road win today.
Yes, it’s on-line. Go to Sports, then More Sports (beneath *Dream on! Moanalua earns spot…), then scroll down. You’ll find *Game Day: Hawaii at San Jose State.
If the UH Defense can continue to attack and keep the pressure on the San Jose QB, the UH Offense should be able to put up enough points for the victory as long as UH pays hard until the final gun sounds.
On Offense, I would expect UH to keep pounding with the running game and wear them down with three different running backs.
Once San Jose State players concentrate on the run, UH hits a long bomb to Marcus Kemp deep. I think Marcus may have a big game.
Go Bows!
Play hard!
Attack, attack, attack.
If the reason for no streaming of UH football is attributed to OC Sports, then that may mean no streaming until 2022, not unless there is loophole in the fine print. This is unfortunate because UH is locked into its 7-year (extension) contract with Oceanic Time-Warner.
OK, CEFCU Stadium — nobody really knows the acronym by heart — offers, not by heart, bacon-covered hot dogs!
Another interesting thing is the walls of the UH coaches booth are covered with pictures of heckling SJSU fans. Oh, the mind games.
I waited until the last minute, but got the Oceanic away-game PPV package for the first time since the 2012 season. Let’s go Bows!
Go Bows!
Kapahulu,
I like your game plan and agree with you 110%!! Let’s Go Warriors!!!
#14 … hopefully still just a 6-year extension? … “UH announced last month that it had awarded a six-year extension of its TV and pay-per-view sports rights contract to Oceanic Time Warner Cable, which agreed to pay U-H $2.3 million a year to start with increases to $2.5 million by the sixth year.” And hopefully a better deal with a competitive bidding process … “Hawaii News Now General Manager Rick Blangiardi said his station group would have matched or exceeded that financial offer, showing substantially more games a year than Oceanic and broadcasting them for free, not on pay per view.” … http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/24961188/senator-wants-probe-into-whether-uh-sports-tv-contractor-got-preferential-treatmenthttp://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/24961188/senator-wants-probe-into-whether-uh-sports-tv-contractor-got-preferential-treatment
We should be okay if the defense plays like a pack of MadDogs.
Dru Brown has to keep on keeping on. From the 2nd half of the AZ game he has led the offense to a lot of long sustained drives. If the D can come up with some take aways and give Brown some short fields watch out.
San Jose playing not to lose.
Those “mad dog” still in the kennel. Maybe they play better from behind. They just gave up another score. A touchdown.
On that series some of the dogs peeked out of their kennel. Henderson was on fire. Choi plays hard.
DAS HOW!!!!
This is a fun game to watch. Watching this game could help put butts in Aloha Stadium seats. But at the current $75 cost for non-season ticket holders, PPV is a barrier to helping boost stadium attendance.
What a run by Brown!
WT HECK! This ULC penalties have got to stop!
UH not capitalizing off of these takeaways.
Touchdown Hawaii!
Scored again, but really not so smart, selfish display. Really undisciplined. I’m all for excitement but really.
Halftime:
Hawaii 24
San Jose State 10
Every football team across America celebrate after a TD.
It seems only Hawaii gets penalized. What’s with that???
You guys remember when our punter was our best offensive weapon? Thank god those days are over!
Bows…………keep the pedal to the metal.
No letting up until the final gun.
Encouraged by the defense getting 2 interceptions.
Play Hard!
After 26 away game losses out of 27 away games, a 24-10 lead going into Halftime looks darned promising.

That last penalty against UH was ridiculous.. these refs are mad at UH for celebrating when every other team in the SEC celebrates the same way but don’t get a penalty for it. I’ll take those penalties though. Our team has been on the bottom of the MWC for the past 3 yrs so let the boys have fun!!! So excited for the 2nd half. I hope we run the score up and put 50 plus points! Go Warriors!!

Somebody needs to go into the locker room and call the team onto the field. Wow.
Play calling not so good this half. Execution also bad. Come on Rolo, open up the offense. Go Warriors.!!!
View of the game,
https://www.periscope.tv/w/1nAJEkOWLeXKL
Brian Smit so conservative in the second half. Play to win baby, not protect the lead.
Ball discipline!
Okay, if they call the celebration by Barker a penalty, they need to flag that SJSU guy after that TD. They officials are consistent. Inconsistent.
Ball security…
Seems like Dru gave up a fumble in the last 3 games. Where’s Lakalaka?
Wow. What’s going on! I guess we thought the game was over at the half. So many mistakes. Really, Lakalaka needs to be given an opportunity to run it.
Hawaii got to clean up the turnovers and penalties, Dru Brown has to stop rolling out to his right almost every play before every team figures out he can’t throw rolling to his left.
Why was Lakalaka in the game so late! TD baby!

Finish!!!
The Defense still needs improvement but Rolo and Dru Brown has the offense looking pretty good.
So we give Rolo credit for the offense or Brian Smith as OC?
I agree with Rolo. Game not over, play until the final whistle.
Correction, I give to Dru Brown for getting the offense moving and Rolo for listening to us fans and benching Woolsey,
FINAL: HAWAII 34 SAN JOSE STATE 17
Great win, Warriors!
Away game win #1 of the Rolovich era!
Credit goes to Lempa. Huge turn around on defense. Kory was big time. So was Trayvon.
Congratulations to Nick Rolovich and the Rainbow Warriors.
Still undefeated in the Mountain West Conference and in 1st place!
Awesome.
Hawaii Fans show your support by coming out to Aloha Stadium next Saturday against UNLV, and cheering on our team.
Hawaii 449 Yards Total Offense.
The defense was spotty at times but we are definitely improving there. Tackling especially early in the game and at the start of the second half could have been stronger. Henderson should have been co-player of the game. He was terrific.
3-3 overall (2-0 MWC) Let’s support the team folks….!
Big props to the defense, only gave up 10 points.
Question: Was Rolo really directing his wrath at Stephen as he was walking toward the bench with a minute to play? Stephen had an amused/embarrassed expression. Funny stuff.
Can’t wait to see the highlight’s video!
a win is a win and 2 – 0 in the MWC, southern/pacific div.
yet, IMHO, it was like I watching 3 of the first 4 game — unimpressive offense and defense – UH came out slow and sluggish on both sides — I expected a much more wide open offense [ how many dive plays up the middle called by Brian Smith? ]
defensively, a let down after what we witnessed against Reno!!!!!!!
What happened to JGW?
Replay starting.
Defense dominated Nevada for three quarters, then let down in the fourth, but I didn’t think it let down today. If it weren’t the defense, score would have been a lot closer.
When you get six sacks, three picks, yield 339 yards and just 10 points, I’d say it was a pretty darn good day for the defense.
Congrats on a good road win!!!
Way to go Sunshine! Another 2 TD game with NO picks, 73% completion rate and 94 QB rating. Thank goodness for your leadership and positive performance levels! Great O line play opened some big holes and awesome QB protection.
Got to give props to the defense. Solid team effort, playing like Warrior teams of the past! You can see the energy and infectious killer karma!
See! I told some of you!. University of Hawaii football program. Must take out Woolsey and change his position not at quarterback. Because he really seriously didn’t do anything at that position for the last past three years!. Now! University of Hawaii have Dru Brown and other quarterbacks! Plus the ones who are sitting out this year. Because of transferring from a FBS and the NCAA rules. University of Hawaii will be really dangerous for the next coming years! This is only the start of the new University of Hawaii football area!. Honestly Hawaii should get Miles for the offensive coordinator. Because he knows to make the offensive line to open bigger wholes for running game. Rolovich is a great passing game coach. Plus a hard noise defense line and Backfield!. Hawaii will be better then June Jones and other Head Coaches. You should be reading College football magazine. What they’re saying about Hawaii! . I just read the College Basketball. They’re pick Hawaii to finish 4th in the Big West Conference this coming season.
OMG, Michigan putting the hurts on Rutgers 78-0 late in the 4th.
A-House,
I agree with you that Brian Smith called a mediocre game. To many dives up the middle with St Juste. I kept saying give Harris a few touches and pass to set up the run. Better results when it did happen.
Brown is still young and inexperienced. Colt made errors his sophomore year but he just kept getting better. I like Brown’s future and grateful he’ll be here for 3 years.
There’s a difference between a dive up the middle and a read-option that ends up being a run between the tackles. If anything it appears to me that too many plays that looked like read-options were called. If Brown is just riding the hand-offs please correct me but they don’t look like straight hand-offs.
The defense pitched a shutout in the second half, had one interception and a stop on fourth down, what else do they need to do?
Correction, 2 stops on 4th down in the second half.
I was not so concerned about the tries to the middle. My question was why not give Lakalaka and Harris more touches since DSJ was being stopped. The running game’s success has really helped the passing game. Naeole has been a terrific assistant coach to both coaches. I hope he stays on going forward.
Rigo is a check of a weapon that makes a difference in all three facets. I hope he can be replaced when he leaves. Don’t believe it will be one person doing what he is doing.
burro: I think you’re right about the run-option; I don’t think most of Saint-Juste’s carries were straight handoffs. I kept waiting for Brown to pull the ball back because it seemed the perimeter was open. He finally did on the 4th-and-1, and scored on the 62-yarder.
After the first half, I thought they’d give Harris and Lakalaka more PT; for whatever reason, it just wasn’t Saint-Juste’s day and thought they should have changed it up. Harris and Lakalaka were productive on their few carries.
Oh, heck, no sense in nit-picking. The team’s unbeaten in conference, and who saw that coming a few weeks ago.
Halftime in San Diego, next week’s opponent is tough.
Great Evening All!
WTG Warriors! Undefeated where it counts…
This just the 2nd start for Brown. There is probably more in the play book that we have yet to see. They did what they needed to do to win.
For the past couple of seasons, I used to define a good Saturday by if Navy and Georgia Tech won.
I had gotten used to losing.
I will excise flex-bone from my vocabulary.
6 wins, a real possibility.
I saw Kahuku, Campbell, and Mililani making plays to end the game.
The Warriors scored six times, punted six times and turned it over twice. SJSU scored twice on offense, once on defense and turned it over three times. It was obvious UH wanted to establish the run and SJSU geared their defensive game plan to stop the run. For the most part SJSU succeeded in stopping the first run option but gave up the second option which Brown took advantage of. The threat of the run opened up some deep throws also. That’s football
I can’t complain about SJSU stopping the run because they had to give something up to do it. Basicly our coaches went with what worked last week. It wasn’t like they had a full week to add some wrinkles to enhance the option. SJSU had the full week to add things to their offense that UH probably didn’t see on film. Our defense seemed a bit clueless on SjSU first two possesions. Once SJSU used their new wrinkles they had to settle back into what they usually do which our defesne was ready to stop. That’s football.
OK after the chow misery, I did not renew my ppv for only the second time since PPV started. Sorry, just was not up for it…. Today I called in to get the rest of the games. Rolo has got some mojo going again, and I am actually gonna be excited for next weeks game for the first time in a long time. Go Warriors!!
Great game. Okay, I’m a believer. Have to admit, it took me some time. If I could, I would definitely be at the next game. Unfortunately, I follow the Warriors from Japan. I think UH or someone should honor those who stuck with the team through thick and thin (mostly thin as we know for the last few years). I mean, the season ticket holders who endured something like 3 wins in three seasons!!! UH heroes. No one is expected to endure that much pain. I think even Rolo understands that 20,000 is okay for now–considering years of failure for the program. And for this blog, ST and all the regulars (you know who you are)–it is amazing that you stuck it out. The game ball should be given to the ticket holders and the mainstays of this website (a few representatives on the field of the group) at one of the games. I am not kidding. That is an idea I put forth to Rolo for honorary team captain or game ball consideration. Finally, for those of us desperately scouring the net for info on the games from abroad, that live feed by Islandman (JVeneri?) was awesome. Totally awesome. I put down what I was doing here early in the morning and stayed glued to that feed. Keep ’em coming please even for home games if possible.
Peace, out.
run option or dive up the middle is still the same “dive up the middle” – different name, but attacking the same area – it was obvious to me that UH OL could not move San Jose DL like they did against Reno
as such, why so many plays “up the middle”???
if San Jose and other teams can do the “sweeps” around the perimeter why can’t UH???
Read option is not a dive up the middle.
But, anyway the read option forces a defense to play for the run thus allowing you to throw to man coverage.
Didn’t we pass for nearly 300 yards?
As mentioned defense held sjsu to zero points in the second and held them well below their average yards ppg.
Just because other teams run fly sweeps and other gimmick plays doesn’t mean we have to do it too. Every coach have plays they feel comfortable with and would rather practice to perfect those play then to waste time running gimmicks. Rolo’s background is JJ and Chris Ault. JJ is a passing guru and Ault mastered the pistol. There are a lot of plays to pick from both offense without having to resort to gimmicks.
We also don’t have speed to make the fly sweep work so why risk a play where we potential could botch the exchange or get tackle for a lost running horizontal to the line of scrimmage. SJSU’s first sweep was successful but I think we also stopped two of them for negative yards. Sweeps are not high percentage plays anymore. Defenders are so fast now run up the middle is a more
………high percentage play. If you watch major college football…they all attack the middle of the defense most of the time.
Great to hear DA BOWS won!! 25k maybe for the next game??
Sayonara from Tokyo!
UH defense showed up recording six sacks, 11 tackles-for-loss, and three interceptions. Next game v. UNLV at home. Go Warriors !!!
nice win coach rolo !!
defense saved the the game today after Brown fumble and Barker fumble !! defense played light out after that.
to the run was not work at the start of the game. why not try the shovel pass ? seems that like the coaches forget about the shovel pass get to in love with what worker last week !!
Wow A-House, can’t you be happy for the team? We won the game you know, convincingly.
Haoa — what city do you reside in Japan?
Unfortunately, we haven’t seen the other Japan bloggers at http://stevem.altervista.org/mainintpost.html recently.
Lakalaka is a great weapon as a decoy, especially in critical short yardage situations. But I’m glad he broke through for a long touchdown today. Gotta keep up the reputation as a real threat “up the middle”.
Entertaining game today.
“Boom” Lakalaka scored, “Bam Bam” Henderson had some great hits, “Sweet Pea” St. Juste have got to have help from the OL, “Sticky Finga” Unga getting better every game, “Sunshine” Brown was in control. That being said, we need to get better , much better for UNLV….and much much better for San Diego State.
Team getting better and more confident each game. Team need to cut down on some silly penalties.
USLC penalties need to stop! Then again, some of those USLC penalties were questionable. Touch two kids finger and it’s un-sportsman like? TD celebration? Seemed like normal manini stuff.
Watching Pumphery make those hand gestures and he only got a warning. Zebras got to get consistent with calls.
Anyhoo, sweet win!
UNLV will be a tough one but we can!
SteveM,
Thanks for asking. Bleeding green here in Gifu, Japan.
Haoa
If not for foolish penalties, a bad snap, and a qb fumble the score should have been closer to 45 or 52 to 10. To the naysayers of previous weeks regarding the defense look at the stats for sacks and I terceptons the last two weeks. I said def. needs alignment effort and new player development-Moala Santiago and can not say enough about Meffy and Wilson (both were really non factors a year ago)
Offensively I think the play calling is great-I happen to watch parts or all of some 20 games a weekend-the Warrior staff is good and getting better all around.
Get out to that stadium next week it will be exciting and do not be surprised at W number 3. UNLV has some weapons but did not face a spirited SDSU team that was expected. Same effort this week less critical unnecessary mistakes and the Warriors take this one. Would be. Great if they walked into 30K plus screaming “Pride Rock”!!!!!!!!
