Men at work

For the first time in their five-year membership, the Warriors are 2-0 and atop the Mountain West’s West Division. Here’s what worked in the 34-17 victory over and what needs work.

> What worked: Dru Brown has become a trusted quarterback who makes the right calls (the 62-yard bootleg was his decision) and right throws (no interceptions in his two starts). His enthusiasm and confidence are contagious. What needs work: Brown admittedly needs to break a bad habit of gripping the football loosely. He has lost fumbles in each of the past two games.

> What worked: The defense dominated the final three quarters, with three picks, six sacks and 11 minus-yards tackles. Safety Trayvon Henderson and corners Jalen Rogers and Jamal Mayo have emerged as leaders and, more significantly, communicators. Head coach Nick Rolovich marveled at how the defensive linemen were able to make changes quickly. What needs work: The Warriors had a fourth-quarter lapse against Nevada the previous week and struggled in the opening quarter against San Jose State. The Warriors need a complete-game production.

> What worked: Rolovich was stunned when he saw the players’ vacant eyes during his first team meeting shortly after he was hired. Now the Warriors are having fun again, in large part to recent success and their faith in the system. What needs work: Sometimes it’s wiser to curb the enthusiasm. Two penalties for excessive celebrations meant kicking off twice from the 20. One day, Rolovich cautioned, those penalties could affect the game’s outcome.

> What worked: Rolovich gave Capri Sun to each player as a metaphorical message to bring the juice to the game. They did, in both the literal and figurative sense. What needs work: Nothing. C’mon, I don’t care how old you are, few things are better than juice boxes.

UNLV was shut out offensively by SDSU-the gauntlet has been thrown down “we won’t face a more physical front seven than SDSU the rest of the year” says Tony Sanchez. Game on Warriors!!!!!

UNLV staff is smoking something. Said they played well enough on defense to win game-check the stats coach! Also stated youth upfront played a role in not handling physical stunting play upfront-UNLV boasts 2 Sr 1 Jr 1 So and 1 RsFr in the OL line up. Can’t wait for a full complete game against these guys after a pitch and catch easy game last year. Look for platooning at Qb by them-Go Warriors!!!!

  6. H-Man October 9, 2016 5:50 am

Dru Brown has revived excitement for Warrior football. His TD tosses (IMO) were of a variety we have not seen since Sean Schroeder. No hesitation. He simply lofted them with laser precision to his receivers. This, along with his game management, has excited not only the fans, but the players as well. I can’t wait for the upcoming game against UNLV. I am hoping there will be at least 28,000 fans along with me. 30,000 will be awesome. Go Warriors !!!

  7. wafan October 9, 2016 5:50 am

So, yesterdays game was a juiced game?

  8. Inyoface October 9, 2016 5:56 am

I honestly think we could’ve beaten Arizona if Dru started.

  9. Bryson October 9, 2016 8:46 am

What I don’t understand is both Dru and Ammon were flagged for excessive celebration but when SJSU recovered Dru’s fumble they weren’t penalized for dancing in the end zone…Rolo should bring that up…

  10. Ohana Hawaii October 9, 2016 8:57 am

GOOD WARRIORS! First thing? H-Man you are really right! What you have said about the fan’s attendance to each of UH’s games!. Less then 28,000 it’s a embarrassment for University of Hawaii football program!. I hope they are more then 28,000!. The players and coaches will be proud if they came out from the teams locker room. Into the Aloha Stadium with more then 30,000 or more fans!. Because this is not Sam Boyd’s Stadium in Las Vegas!. There only 8,000 fans shows up to each games. But whatever coach Rolovich have said about what have to change is really true!. If the defense don’t play hard noise football. They’re be changing on defensive. Because UNLV is not a pass over teams no more!. After that it’s Air Force, Boise State and San Diego State they’re a great teams and great offensive too!. University of Hawaii seriously must have to stop them from scoring!. For me? I would like to see Hawaii beat UNLV by the score 75 -7!. Because people in Vegas act really nice to the people from Hawaii! . The honest truth they only want your money!. Because they’re talk totally bad and nasty about the people who live in Hawaii even the older peoples! I been here over 30th years hearing this!. The best one? A guy from my work say that? Why do high school kids from Hawaii come to UNLV to play football or any sports? Because they’re don’t have any brains to play college sports or study or money to come here!. They only wants a scholarship!. Also today on the newspaper. The state of Nevada is planning to rises up hotel room tax to $200 to $300 per night with the hotel regular price per room. Plus that by yourself!. If you bring another person with you it will cost them the same like you!. Because they want to build a stadium for the Oakland Raiders.

  11. Warrior Dave October 9, 2016 9:19 am

The excessive celebration on Dru was weak. All he did was shake hands with some young fans leaning into the end zone.

But I must admit, UH football is fun again. Thank you Coach Rolo, staff and players.

  12. NorthShoreFan October 9, 2016 9:21 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
    Guud win!
Me and my friends thought the game was “juiced”. Just didn’t know it was Caprice.
After two of our TD’s we got flagged for celebration. Didn’t know player couldn’t shake hands with little kids.
Watching SDS and UNLV after TD dude made some hand gestures that seemed like taunting and only got a conversation with the ref. I say conversation because ref might have been congratulating the dude.
Consistency is what I’m asking for.

Anyhoo, Warriors got lot to work on for UNLV and SDSU looks good as advertised but both teams got weaknesses.
With UNLV, me thinking stack the box. QB is a great runner.

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  13. Former UH Athletes October 9, 2016 9:25 am

My only critique about the game was the lack of preparedness on the defensive side for the 1st quarter. SJSU moved the ball in big chunks at will. I give credit to the O for matching scores and it allowed the D to settle in and solidify things in the 2ndQ and on. However, SJSU appears it will be a bottom feeder of a bad division in a weak conference.

UH must come ready to play vs the better MW teams. If UH’s D give up early scores and can’t match them shot for shot, UH won’t come back vs the likes of SDSU and Boise St.

  14. burro sabio October 9, 2016 9:43 am

This weeks game won’t be easy, UNLV held SDSU to 13 well into the 3rd quarter. Lotulelei had a great game at LB for UNLV.

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid October 9, 2016 9:46 am

Warriors have two wins in MWC, including that rare bird, a road victory. The Warriors play with intensity and passion – the Warrior culture is rising. There is great promise, an much hope in what we are seeing on the field. All of that works!

When DSJ is having a tough game, would like to see the other RB’s dropped into the mix more quickly – unless there are injuries healing which we don’t know about. We have three very talented backs with very different styles. We have the weapons for the ground game, including an O-line which is the best we have seen in many a season -let’s use them.

Much respect to the offense and defense.

Congrat to the Warriors and their coaches. Keep up the good work. I am not certain we have seen the best of them yet, but they are on their way.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  16. Da Punchbowl Kid October 9, 2016 9:50 am

Sorry for the typos above. Need coffee. 😉

  17. A-House October 9, 2016 9:50 am

yes, UH won and yes the “D” came up with 3 picks and yes the D shut Josey from scoring in the 2nd half — yes, the “O” came up with 34 points and rolled up the yards — playing Boise St and SDSU will be totally different and best to prepare to throw everything offensively at them – make them uncomfortable with UH offense

it’s personal preference on “up the middle” — success rate is so low!

yes, many teams, including the NFL, run up the middle many times a games – does this mean that UH has to “run up the middle”? if yes, why??? a 10% success rate is noting to brag about — I asked Coach Chow about this at the Houston Space Center and his response was, “to keep the D honest” — WAT????

why does UH not have the speed to “sweep”? is not St juice speedy? what about last year’s 1,000 yard RB? he has speed?

if RB slow, use this as a “trick” play and pass the ball to the TE or WR – what’s wrong with dat???

    as al says, “nuff said”

  18. Hawaii925 October 9, 2016 10:10 am

I think the two celebration penalties were uncalled for because Dru Brown just went to shake the hands of the fans and in the other one was for doing a dance move in the end zone. There was a dance done by the San Jose tight end in the end zone that wasn’t call. Neither celebration penalties by Hawaii were offensive to either the other team or the fans. I think the UH officials should complain to the MWC for their prejudicial focus on Hawaii as being undiciplined.

  19. Hank October 9, 2016 10:26 am

#9….I thought that when DB was softly high-fiving the pop warner kids that a warning would be appropriate…but excessive celebration? ….give me a fricking break.

  20. Casual Observer October 9, 2016 10:27 am

Great win and the main difference is Dru Brown. When the offense can score points, then it makes defensive stops more meaningful because you are giving your offense another chance to score. In previous seasons, even if the defense did well, it didn’t mean you could win a game. And even though IW stands ready, the coaches need to find and prep another qb of DB’s quality as back up when the opportunity arises. With a scoring offense and a good enough defense, the Warriors can compete with anyone in the MWC, and lets include Boise St in the conversation.

  21. Former UH Athlete October 9, 2016 10:47 am

    15. Agree that DSJ should have been taken out after halftime. He just didn’t have a good game. Just like any other sport, it’s pretty amazing on how many athletes follow up a career performance with a dud. DSJ will bounce back.

Harris and Lakalaka both did well on the few calls they got. UH has a nice stable of RBs and Rolo just needs to play the hot hand.

  22. Andrew October 9, 2016 11:30 am

At least the national perception of UH is slowly starting to change. Both experts on ESPN’s bowl projections have hawaii in a bowl game. It’s just projections but hey it’s something.

  23. tom October 9, 2016 11:36 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Sad to read about the passing of Richard Lum. Richard was the Band Master at UH for over 25 years and built the band up in size and musicality and became a great addition not only to the music scene but also at the half-time productions at the football games.

His son Michel blogs here under the name of Na Koa Mike.

Rest in peace Richard and condolences to the Lum Ohana.

  24. Derek October 9, 2016 12:07 pm

One change is the whole difference. It took Rolo awhile, but he finally made the decision to put Dru Brown in at QB before the season would be lost. Now at 3-3 and looking up there is genuine optimism in the State of Hawaii that this UH football team can go places like Toyota. It’s been a long time. So far, Brown’s completion percentage is 67.9% with 1 interception, none in the last 2 games. His QB rating is 155 which is very good. Compared to Woolsey’s less than 50% completion and QB rating of around 111 is like “apples and oranges” (Tomey’s commercial). That improved efficiency and consistency has helped the defense to stay fresher, play freer, play more agressively, and with more energy to get the ball back for the offense because they know the offense will move and ball and score. The team confidence has gotten a shot in the arm and people are having fun and are more positive. Knowing that you are going to win the game is half the battle. They still have to execute their assginments and play their roles. Unfortunate penalties like the excessive celebrations are correctable easily. I did not notice any false start penalties but I could be wrong. Rolo will keep the team humble and he will point out the bad things the team did in the last game.

UNLV coming in is 0-3 on the road so far this year, to UCLA, Central Michigan, and San Diego State, 3 good teams so they are not to be taken lightly. They beat Fresno St. in Vegas, 45-20 so they can play well. This game coming up is a big one because the following game is at Air Force which is always a tough game in high altitude and their type of offense. Last year AF ran for over 400+ yards in Aloha Stadium in a blowout. They beat Navy 28-14 the other week and Navy just be Houston. Unfortunately, AF got big headed and lost at Wyoming yesterday so they are eating some humble pie right now. Good luck to the Rainbow Warriors this week and just win baby!

    RE: #22
Condolences to Na Koa Mike’s ohana.
I recognize Richard Lum with the UH band, but did not know Na Koa Mike was his son.

During the UNLV/SDSU telecast, the announcers were hyping the Aztecs and Boise State while showing the Mountain West standings without acknowledging that Hawaii and Wyoming topped each respective division.

  27. Richard Tavai October 9, 2016 1:44 pm

It was tough following the game during the hurricane. But, it is great to see excitement in our football team. Go Warriors!!

This has been a tough week for UH athletics outside of in season sports. Three major contributors to the sports program passing this week. My best to Kwon, Dyer, and Lum families

  29. z October 9, 2016 2:20 pm

I like how the coaches called the game. After the previous game our strength was our running game. It still is. SJS schemed to take it away and they did a pretty good job but it left other things open. In the past people would complain on how our receivers weren’t getting any separation. Well they are now and one of the reason is because our opponents have to spend a lot of time trying to stop our running game. Dru’s td came about partly because their defense was so concern about our interior running with Lakalaka. I don’t think we are good enough to have our qb in pocket trying to throw the ball the way we did in the r&s. He will get killed back there. His fumbles were in part because he was trying to escape defenders who had gotten loose. If he weren’t as mobile as he is we would have seen more sacks by our opponents. I thought our coaches made some really good adjustments and some really nice calls. It is the adjustments they make during a game which is what I look for. Yeah our d struggled early but they were able to turn it around. Our offense had some really nice drives and found a way to get the ball in the endzone. We have come a long way. It is fun to watch the game again. We are winning. We are headed in the right direction. We have young players who are making plays. The future looks good. Enjoy the win.

  30. oneseason October 9, 2016 2:27 pm

Dru Brown’s stats coming in at #10 for FBS QB’s says a lot about how far the team has come in just half a season. Personally, I am glad that Mr. Brown had the early part of the season to improve as well as avoid a season ending injury during pre-conference games. At this point in UH’s reality, it seems to me that a win against UNLV means more than a win would have against Arizona. Ending up as near as possible to the top of the conference seems important. While an early season win against Arizona would have been really nice, it likely would have been written off as a fluke due to poor Arizona preparation instead of quality UH play. And even a close loss to Arizona would be meaningless to qualify for post season play.

  31. Inyoface October 9, 2016 3:15 pm

Oceanic is hurting UH’s brand more than helping it on a national level.

  32. azwarrior22 October 9, 2016 4:52 pm

Hawaii is getting zero exposure on the mainland. There’s only 4 games that are not televised nationnally, and of course, Hawaii is one of those games. Even New Mexico State vs Idaho is on ESPN3. Why can’t they at least live stream the Hawaii games on the MWC website?

  33. Maddog50 October 9, 2016 4:54 pm

UNLV will offer 2 Qbs against us. The key defensively be bringing the “juice” maybe Hawaiian Punch this time. After having seen them play 4x I must admit they were amped up on D and tried to bring it. Stats show almost 500 yards by SDSU but only 26 points. Spirited effort on our part and a cleaned up hammer style on O will do it. Look for Coach Rolovich et al to throw those fly sweeps and reverses, the Rebs jump on flow immediately and can be suckered by counters-Go Warriors!!!!

  34. Maddog50 October 9, 2016 4:57 pm

I would love the straight story on the blackout or non-stream. I have contacted both parties and all I get is it is being worked on. I do not believe there is any hope for resolution at least not this season. Sad

  35. oneseason October 9, 2016 5:16 pm

Fans learned a lot when they read the extension contract that UH and Gib Arnold signed. The contract with Oceanic doesn’t seem to be posted. They do provide this … http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2016/10/1/general-uh-statement-on-live-video-streaming.aspx … but it would be good to include the contract.

  36. Ronnie October 9, 2016 5:56 pm

It was great being at the game against Nevada! I wish I could come home for all of the home games, but at $500-$700 a ticket, that’s not happening unless I win the lottery… That’s what makes the PPV situation so frustrating.

This is what the statement says:
The University of Hawai’i has a contract with Oceanic Cable giving the cable company the rights to televise UH sporting events, not picked up by conference agreements, for which the university receives over $2 million a year.

At this time, Oceanic is reassessing its distribution of its sports telecasts and is currently not providing live video streaming. UH and Oceanic are working together in hopes that the service will resume in the near future. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank everyone for their patience.
    ———————————————————————————–

I don’t want to be insensitive, but I don’t really care what the problem is. I just want a solution. I used to pay to watch the games on Hawaiian Telcom. I would be willing to pay to watch the games. I’m sure they could block IP addresses that originate within the state…

I think it is so sad and so wrong that I can buy season tickets knowing that I may not make any of the games, but I can’t buy a live streaming package to allow me to watch the games. 🙁

  37. bowwar October 9, 2016 5:58 pm

It is with great sadness to learn today that Richard S. Lum, Professor Emeritus, Music at the University of Hawaii passed away. I can honestly say that I owe my college education to Mr. Lum, as he graciously gave me “tuition waivers” for playing clarinet in the University of Hawaii Marching Band and Concert Band. I was NEVER a great musician, but Mr. Lum saw fit to provide me the tuition waiver during my 4 years of undergraduate work. He was a tireless motivator and I’ll always remember telling me to “lift my legs” higher when I marched….I was proud to be in the Band and I will always cherish the lasting relationships I obtained. I will always be one of the “boys in the band” and I can thank Mr. Lum for that proud legacy. Also, Mr. Lum was a tremendous supporter of UH athletics and was also a reason for why I’ve been a season ticket holder since 1978. With this being “homecoming week”, I urge all of my fellow former band members to come to the stadium and pay tribute for an outstanding educator. My thoughts go out to the Lum family and the University for this loss…May he rest in peace.

    Mahalo, Ke Akua
For all the hard-won victories… mostly over self…
    Self-centeredness
    Self aggrandizement
    Selfishness
    Self doubt
    Self loathing
    And welcome TEAM.
What a joy it was to fall asleep after a long trip to Chile listening to Bobby and John broadcasting a W on the road.
Now just a little more Self control and Rainbow Warriors can continue this winning season all the way.
    Sweet. Imua!

  39. Ohana Hawaii October 9, 2016 7:59 pm

I would like to see the University of Hawaii football team come out really stronger then ever!. It been really seriously cool? If they score 48 point in the first half. Then 31 in the second half! That’s really be a great Homecoming Game for the Warriors fans that come out to the game!. It’s will make it up for the embarrassment game against Michigan 63 – 3 lost. But, I hope that Head Coach Rolovich remember his embarrassment on his last coaching day at UNR lost to UNLV! Because they kick UNR butt really bad!. Also what their did to the Warriors last year too!. It’s pay back time! WARRIORS PROTECT OUR HOUSE! That’s what the signs said! So don’t it!!

  40. Na Koa Mike October 9, 2016 9:03 pm

    Tom, SteveM, whitey and bowwar,

Thank you for your kind words and remembrances. My father was a big supporter of UH sports when he was at UH and in retirement. He was still going to basketball and volleyball games earlier this year. It is through him in his early days at UH that I became UH fan. The UH band will be doing a short tribute to my father during the pre-game show this week and many alumni band members will be taking part.

  41. bowwar October 9, 2016 11:22 pm

Na Koa Mike…My sincere condolences to your family…Your dad was a very nice man and I have many fond memories of what he did for the UH Band and the many students that came through. In addition to band programs, I also played for the pep band and played at all the football/basketball games. It was alot of fun and your dad was very nice to everyone. I bought my season tickets once I left the band in 1978 and I’ve been a season ticket holder since…I will be at this weekend’s game and I will admit to you that I’ll have a tear in my eye, as the Band plays tribute to your father.
    May he rest in peace!

I have been on the mainland for two of the games this season and will probably miss a few more. I hope that we can restore streaming games to the mainland. The cable company that purchased Oceanic– Charter Communications which will do business as Spectrum– was the network partner of the Mountain West Conference until 2012 and it seems that once they took over with Oceanic they stopped the streaming. Charter/Spectrum have said they have plans for changing sports programming across their network. I hope they can provide a legal stream for distributing live streaming on the mainland soon.
