Tuesday checkin

Team back in Gym 1 today. They will be in there tomorrow and leave Thursday for UCR then Fullerton

Spoke to Greeley. She said she is hoping to play front row soon. Had a cortisone shot and has been pretty pain free. said the bye week was helpful, allowed for some healing and resting of nagging injuries (someone also mentioned that from Sunday’s horseshoe tournament).

Shoji said that Greeley will have to earn her way back into the lineup but it gives them some options. Castillo still having issues with that leg problem so that will cut into the depth at middle. Said Mitchem will continue to be used at both spots as they continue to work on lineup and sub pattern.

The DSs on this coming road trip will be Ross and Guinasso.

Don’t recall Ross playing any DS. I thought she was considered a hitter now. She is very impressive though.

Why does Coach say things like that. We all know when Kalei is ready for front row she will play front row. We need her in front to solidify the lineup.

    1. she’s played some DS but is considered more of an OH.
    2. He says that because that is the situation, she needs to earn her spot back. She’s not 100 percent and they don’t want to risk her re-injuring that shoulder.

Good to see Shoji taking Ross and Guinasso, giving all the active players a chance to travel and play in the road matches.

    Anderson makes 13??

WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR, AND HOW DO OU PLAY PORTUGUESE HORSE SHOES?

    5. If Castillo is traveling, and Shoji is only taking 14 like the previous trips, Anderson isn’t going. As Cindy said, it’s Ross and Guinasso in the DS roles.

    1. Koelsch
    2. Granato
    3. Burns
    4. Higgins
    5. Mitchem
    6. Sibley
    7. Iosia
    8. Greeley
    9. Guinasso
    10. Taylor
    11. Kahakai
    12. Castillo
    13. Maglio
    14. Ross

I’ve never believed in cortisone shots because it masks the condition of the injury. (Of course she is pain free but is the injury healed?)

Giving equal travel time to each DS is considerate but wholly inefficient. If they were all equal in skill it would be understandable but that is not the case; especially with a libero whose passing is suspect.

Taking Ross, as an alternate OH, is well intended but misguided. The problem is the passing (first touch), which will impact all OHs. It makes more sense to take another DS (in light of the libero’s inconsistency).

Great to hear that the possibility of Greeley playing up front in the “near” future. Hope Mitchem is taking Chris’ advice to swing away at every opportunity instead of tipping. She will be surprised how many balls she will put down. When wahines play the higher bracket teams, those tips are not going to work. So swing away Annie, you got to nothing to lose as your senior year is quickly coming to the end. The team desperately needs another terminator at the pin – and the wahines have everything to gain! Go out swinging hard!

I am hopeful that Kalei is healthy to play front row. I would love to see this lineup:

    LS Greeley and Mitchem
    M Maglio and Bush/Castillo
    Opp Taylor
    L Kahakai
    S Iosia

    DS Smith

I would like DS to ride this horse as I think that this is the best option for rest of season and hopefully into the playoffs.

    Hi Cindy,

    Great article this morning.

Shoji mentioned “solidifying a line up” but how does he do that with the rotating DS on the trips? It appeared that Smith had taken that first DS role last week and now she doesn’t travel?

I guess they are all basically interchangeable and gives the Cali girls a chance to see family and friends.

Heart to heart talk with Brian Gimmilaro (Volleymag.com), interesting reading. LBSU, according to Brian, has several injuries to key players.

    11. solidifying the offenseive lineup . also mentioned the substitution pattern which is the DS/serving.

    12. which could explain why they nearly lost to UCSB

They take 14. rotate the DSs. but with Sibley now out (ankle) Smith will go.
Staying home are Sibley, Ponce, Anderson
