previous thread someone asked about the rules of Portuguese Horseshoes. Same as regular horseshoes only they use bean bags that you toss into a box with holes cut out.

hawaii has used every inch of their depth this season, it seems …

take care, sibley, and heal up fast!

  3. Cubicle1126 October 26, 2016 5:00 pm

from the prior thread … the other factor in ucsb pushing lbsu to 5 sets was that ucsb had grunt and ruddins back for that match. ruddins in particular had a big night.

if grunt and ruddins are healthy when hawaii and ucsb play again next month, it will be a tougher matchup (even if hawaii is playing at home). grunt played, but ruddins was out when hawaii swept ucsb a few weeks ago …

Is Maglio back to 100%? I know she’s been banged up.

Watched the Washington- Stanford game. The Cardinal women were dominant in that match. They are very tall, at one point the announcers noted the front 3 @ 6’8″, 6’6″ and 6’6″. One of their setters was a freshman, good hands and a lot of volleyball knowledge. Same qualities as the Wahine’s freshman setter, but Norene is more athletic and has a much better serve.

Does not bode well for Hawaii’s RPI with Kansas State and Washington losing.

The jumping required for volleyball is tough on the joints, often resulting in tweaks and injuries. Ironically, faster offenses require less jumping. Hitters do not have to jump as hard/as high because the sets are lower. The set yields a natural seam between the OH and the MB.

In fact Hawaii has used a fast offense against Wisconsin, without NT, AM, and KG. Moreover, NI is arguably the premier fast ball setter in the nation. Somewhat disheartening to see coaches make her throw up the slow high ball (which beginners typically learn).

Can Tuileta play in the games if he enrolls in the spring ?

  9. Ron October 27, 2016 10:26 am

I predict that regardless how the rest of the season plays out we will be sent to San Diego for our first match in the NCAA’s. There will also be a good Pac 12 team, maybe Washington will be there also. The third team will be ranked(RPI)higher than us. Also, I am concerned about the health of Castillo, Sibley, and Greeley, we need our depth . I would also like to see them groom Kendra for the right side for next year. She is one of the best blockers on the team and she is fearless. Keep Emile in the middle so she can be an All-American. P.S. I have always liked Brian G. even though I loved to boo him at the Stan. He is the one who developed club VB into what it is today. He was adored in Orange County. Right after Patsy Mink, you must thank guys like Brian, Al S., Kathy G. and Dave for what we have now.

Why was the long beach/uci match voided and must be replayed? what were the circumstances of the protest?

  11. Ryu October 27, 2016 11:46 am

This is from the Big West website:

    10/27/2016

Due to a protest upheld by the NCAA, the September 24 Long Beach State at UC Irvine women’s volleyball match has been ruled a no-contest. The NCAA has ruled that the match is to be replayed from the point of the protest, which occurred in the second set.

The protest was the result of a misapplication of a player substitution rule against UC Irvine.

The rescheduling date for the resumption of the contest has yet to be determined by the two institutions.

  12. jmy October 27, 2016 12:09 pm

    11. This could be huge for UH…UCI almost beat the Beach the first time…Maybe the Aneaters will help UH out & win this time…Of course UH will have to do its part & beat both teams…

  13. Maverick October 27, 2016 12:52 pm

10,11. In a now-deleted UCI game recap, the controversial substitution error came in the second set, giving LBSU a point and knotted the score at 19-19. From the LBSU recap, “…it appeared UCI went up 20-18. However, during another LBSU timeout, it was discovered that Irvine had made an illegal substitution. The score was then changed to 19-19, setting up a race to the finish. The teams tied at every point from 19-23 (resulting in a total of 21 tie scores in a 25-point set) before the Beach pulled away with a crucial 3-0 run to end the set and head to the locker room level at 1-1.” The final match score was 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, 18-25, 15-13 LBSU. So I am assuming the match will resume at 20-18, UCI.

From the NCAA rulebook, “17.2.2.4 If a protest lodged by a captain/coach cannot be resolved by consulting the rules book, the facts are recorded on the back of the scoresheet for that set. (See Rule 17.2.4.) The first referee then continues the set and will forward the protest information to the NCAA secretary- rules editor for a final decision after the match. (Exceptions: Rule 17.2.2.5 and Rule 17.2.5.) If the protest is found to be valid (referee’s decision changed), the protested set may be replayed from the point of protest or error, and the match replayed to its conclusion. The decision to replay a set/match where a valid protest occurs ultimately rests with the two teams and their conference(s). If the decision is to not replay the protested set/ match, the match is officially recorded as a no-contest for both teams.

    12. UCI will have the scoring advantage 25-22, 20-18, but LBSU is playing very strongly right now. UCI is 3-1 in its last four, the lone loss coming against UH, but its three wins are against the conference’s two worst teams. LBSU and Irvine meet tomorrow night for what was to have been their final meeting of the season, so it will be a “preview” of their postponed match.

As far as tie breakers are concerned, LBSU is 8-0 in matches, UH is 7-1. In sets, LBSU is 24-7 (including the first set loss to UCI in the postponed match), and UH is 23-5. Let’s assume UH wins the rematch in Honolulu 3 sets to 2 (ignore for a moment any matches between now and then), so both teams are 8-1. I am assuming the most conservative set win scenario for UH. The set records will be 26-10 for LBSU, and 26-7 for UH. This means that for the remaining 7 matches, UH has to win the rest and lose two fewer sets than LBSU to ensure it wins under tie breaker rule #3 (I assume LBSU and UH win their remaining matches and are tied under rules #1 and #2). If UH sweeps LBSU or wins 3-1, then UH has more leeway to lose sets in the remaining 7 matches. And has been mentioned previously, UH has the slightly tougher schedule.

  15. po'okela October 27, 2016 2:06 pm

anyone keep up with hawaii prep volleyball?

dave needs to land iolani FRESHMAN outside elena ogilvie. she’s 5’10 and growing, a hard hitter, smart hitter, great volleyball IQ and is great defensively.

  16. Maverick October 27, 2016 2:20 pm

    14. Correction, in my scenario, UH can afford to lose 2 more sets than LBSU and still win tiebreaker #3 if it beats LBSU 3-2 in Honolulu.

  17. vbfan October 27, 2016 2:46 pm

If the UCI-LBSU match isn’t replayed then we don’t have to worry about any tiebreakers. Hawaii controls its own destiny just win out and with a 15-1 conference record, LBSU will finish in 2nd with a 14-1 record.

  18. Maverick October 27, 2016 3:18 pm

    17. It will be replayed, per 11 above. And LBSU wouldn’t allow your scenario to occur, they would insist on the match being completed.

  19. tako October 27, 2016 4:34 pm

    15. Agree with Po’okela , U of H needs to offer that young lady; she’s a great talent.

  20. Maverick October 27, 2016 5:20 pm

For the curious, UH’s current (as of right now) adjusted RPI rank is 37th, with the 51st-rated SOS. Its best win is over AZ. However, 0-4 versus top 25 RPI, 1-5 versus top 50 RPI. Not a great resume. IMO, if UH loses to LBSU at home and doesn’t get the AQ, I wouldn’t be surprised if UH is left out of the tournament (particularly if AZ tanks it and falls out of the top 50 RPI). Yes, the team has had injuries and on paper is a top 15 team, but you have to play and actually beat the top RPI teams. Another down year, non-conference, for the Big West has hurt too. More interesting will be if UH beats LBSU in Honolulu, wins the other 7 remaining matches, but loses the AQ bid. IMO, if LBSU’s RPI can remain top 50 as it currently is, I think UH gets in. If not, UH is either one of the last four in, or one of the last four out. Thoughts from the blog?

  21. jmy October 27, 2016 5:48 pm

    20. I agree with your assessment that if UH does not win the BW, there’s a good chance that they will not get an at-large…They did not beat anyone of substance this year…If you look at all of the tougher conferences (Pac-12, Big 10, WCC, etc.), they will get the majority of the 32 at-large bids…After them, there may be as few as 5-6 bids left…

  22. Maverick October 27, 2016 6:04 pm

    21. I’m glad you mentioned the WCC as a tough conference. In the age of big money football, this is one conference that has shown that its teams can compete in WVB without the trickle down of bowl proceeds (with the possible exception of BYU) and major TV contracts. Clearly the blueprint for the BW.

  23. Warriorfan October 27, 2016 6:14 pm

Elena Ogilvie is definitely impressive for a high school freshman, she is way better defensively than the latest wahine local outside hitters were at the same age and she’s gonna keep geting better she reminds me of Aneli when she was a freshmen but more athletic.
Hopefully she grows to 6 feet tall and She picks UH.

  24. Warriorfan October 27, 2016 6:27 pm

    20. I ain’t worried uh will get in that trojan doofus on volleytalk thinks pacific will get in and not UH Lol

Uh barely lost at long beach with Maglio playing her worst match of the year Uh is fine.

  25. Maverick October 27, 2016 6:40 pm

    24. LMU before Pacific, for sure, if WCC gets three teams in. Right now, only USD and BYU are the only guaranteed teams in.

  26. Cindy Luis October 27, 2016 6:54 pm

Maglio wasn’t banged up, more a touch of the flu
Tuileta would be eliglbe in spring if he is enrolled at UHM and has made the necessary academic progress
    9. think you mean Banachowski, not Scates.

to continue the discussion on Beach-UCI
Match WILL be replayed. no date yet.
Can’t imagine UH not getting an at-large if they don’t win the big west.
