Great comeback by UCI to beat LBSU in five. If UH beats Poly on Thursday, Na Wahine win the AQ and go dancing.

  18. jmy November 15, 2016 6:50 pm

Would be funny if BG protested this match! Haha!

  19. Bleachercoach November 15, 2016 6:51 pm

Thank you UC IRVINE!!! What a great comeback in set 5 ….Okay Hawaii..”Let’s Do This!”

  20. greenthumb November 15, 2016 6:53 pm

Congrats to UC Irvine on hanging tough and winning. And thank you.

  21. noblesol November 15, 2016 6:54 pm

    That was fun.

  22. Cindy Luis November 15, 2016 7:01 pm

Wahine have clinched at least a share, would have to lose both this week for it to go to a tiebreaker.

  23. Maverick November 15, 2016 7:15 pm

Pretty simple on AQ now. If UH wins at least one of their last two matches, they get the AQ regardless of what LBSU does. Lose both combined with two LBSU wins, tying both teams in the standings, and LBSU gets the AQ. Lose both combined with at least one more LBSU loss, and UH gets the AQ. IMO, it ends on Thursday with a win over Poly.

  24. Cindy Luis November 15, 2016 7:16 pm

someone emailed to say that Gimmillaro had an altercation with a fan after the match. Big West TV shut off. any confirmation?

  25. noblesol November 15, 2016 7:19 pm

#23 Concur, if goes to a tie-breaker now, the AQ goes to LBS. The next tie-breaker is a best match record head-t0-head against common opponents from the top. LBS is perfect 2 for 2 against both Cal Poly and Santa Barbara. In that scenario LBS shares the BWC Title with Hawaii, but LBS wins outright the AQ.

Wahine win the BW Conference Title outright with one more win, and yes the AQ. However, for RPI maintenance they still need to win out. To fill out the ‘other factors’ resume for the selection committee considerations for seeding, and for establishing the mind-set needed in the post-season, they still need to set their goals on losing no sets and dominating to the end of conference play. Then they’ll have done all they can do to position themselves for the post-season.

  26. 1duc2nv November 15, 2016 7:22 pm

    24. Yes bg did have an altercation with a couple of fans @ 33:00.

  27. Gossip Queen November 15, 2016 7:36 pm

    Too bad.

  28. 1duc2nv November 15, 2016 7:39 pm

Opps sorry, yep they shut it down but good thing I recorded this game 🙂

  29. T103 November 15, 2016 9:26 pm

hmmm would love to know what happened, who instigated the whole thing, and how it all plays out w/ the altercation. In anycase, anyone going down to Stan S. tomorrow nite to watch exhibition? I think it’s free, just pay for parking right?

  30. jm2375 November 15, 2016 11:15 pm

T103 – you’re correct – free admission, but gotta pay $6 for parking. Don’t think the concessions will be open. Don’t know about L&L, though.

I’ll be there, cheering on the boys. Missed the UCI exhibition.

  31. haleiwacrossfitter November 16, 2016 3:14 am

#25, noblesol, only the top 16 get seeded. The rest are “geographically” placed, at least the NCAA has the right to do so. Last year was different for some reason and even though we were not seeded, we got sent to Texas A&M regional. That is not the norm.

So, as long as we get the AQ, it really doesn’t matter, IMO, where we fall in the RPI. The NCAA can send us wherever they want to. The RPI only comes into play to determine the top 16 seeds and determining who gets into the tournament for at large bids, not placement in tournament.

  32. haleiwacrossfitter November 16, 2016 4:18 am

Also, I’m just curious on people’s thoughts on UH losing out on Phobe Grace from Kahuku. She’s headed to Utah, but was very dominant at Kahuku and the reason why they were #1 for the majority of the season. She’s 6’2″, could have been a Kahumoku/Anae/Mau type player for UH. I think she’s a big loss to not keep her at home.

Granted, it is what it is and not all players want to stay home and they want to experience something new…but I’m just stating my opinion. Curious of other’s thoughts on losing her to Utah.

  33. T103 November 16, 2016 5:32 am

@Haleiwa I THINK I saw her play this past season, she’s a beast. My guess is that UH is well aware of the individual awesome talent on island and that good chance she might be mormon coming from Kahuku and going to Utah, thats mormon country, just how good football players end up on Provo @ BYU. Mulling the decision to check out the exhibition tonite, long day ahead. Have a good one folks. Someone try and make ni’ele and find out what happened w BG and the confrontation.

  34. kahuna November 16, 2016 5:36 am

I thought the first tiebreaker would be head to hesd? UH swept LB at home and lost in 5 on the road. Shouldn’t that be looked at first?

  35. noblesol November 16, 2016 5:54 am

#31 My understanding is their are 16 sub-regional hosts who are seeded the #1 team in their sub-region. Agree, Hawaii is not going to be a #1 seed in the sub-regional; however, depending on which sub-regional they get sent to and how they rank within that sub-region, the selection committee determines whether they are ranked the #2 or #3 or #4 seed in the sub-regional. If I’m correct on that, then RPI and their ‘other factors’ resume stall matters before the selection committee in determining not only where they are sent, but how they are paired in their sub-regional.

  36. noblesol November 16, 2016 6:03 am

#34 Link to updated Big West WVB Auto-Qualifier (AQ) and tie-breaker spreadsheet: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AgoVY4MJP0wagnGTEuORoQZT37gT
Note: the tie-breaker tracking spreadsheet and the discussion below come with no assurance of accuracy and are in no way official. Do not rely on them. If you find any mistakes, please let me know; however I offer no assurance I’ll be updating them.

Summary of where things stand among the BWC WVB teams:
    – Cal Poly, UCSB, Irvine, Davis, CSUN, Riverside, and Fullerton have all been eliminated from the BWC Conference Title and the NCAA Women’s VB tournament.
    – LBS post-season elimination scenario: one more UH win or one more LBS loss, will eliminate LBS from the AQ. This is because UH would finish with the best conference record.
    – UH post-season elimination scenario: UH loses its next matches against both Cal Poly and UCSB, plus LBS wins its next two matches against Fullerton and Riverside. This would tie LBS with UH for conference record and they’d share the BWC Championship Title, but eliminate UH from winning the AQ. This is because LBS is a perfect two for two against both Cal Poly and UCSB, and LBS would win the AQ on the tie-breaker (a head-to-head against UH in best match record against common opponents, starting from the top).

Bottom line for HI: the Wahine just need to focus on Cal Poly Thursday, and then UCSB on Saturday. They need to care only about what they can control, and they can ignore the rest. With a win on Thursday they’ll clinch the BW Conference title outright, along with the NCAA Tournament Auto Qualifier, along with Shoji’s 1,200th win. Win out, dominate, lose no sets, and they’ll have done all they can to position themselves for the post-season.

From what I read, Jennifer Roth has been offered full ride at U of H Hilo and has signed LOI with them. Originally, she was a projected walk-on for U of H Manoa.

BG incident with fan at last night LB-UCI rematch posted on Volleytalk Proboard. Shows BG turning around to say something to fans. Match stops as Bren Center people go up to a middle age balding man to talk to him. TV announcer comes back on and talks about everyone needing to be respectful. There is another incident at end of match with BG and fan. No big deal!

To me, I have never been fan of BG as I always suspected that he encouraged the arrogant stares through the net that so many of his played displayed for decades. Nevertheless, respect is due this iconic coach who has produced some of the very best – including Tara Cross and Danielle Scott, my all-time LB favorites. I initially thought the red card displayed by wahines fans was funny but now I don’t. BG was offered big bucks to go to rich schools (USC I believe), but he remained loyal to his school – just like Dave. To me, that says a lot about BG .

  40. noblesol November 16, 2016 10:30 am

The red card thing was a one-off I’m sure, not to be repeated within the usually mild-mannered SSC. But BG left himself wide-open to it, due to his long hx of mocking, baiting, and berating along the sidelines. It’s common to wonder before each match how far he’ll take it this time, and bet on the over/under on yellow cards. Lots of metaphors apply to such behavior, the one the springs first to my mind is ‘you reap what you sow’. Everyone across the conference and across the years has witnessed it, experienced it, and not to anyone’s credit, come to expect it. I credit BG for being an excellent coach and having had many successes, but I found myself feeling sorry for his players this year, being subjected to BG’s behavior and the victims of it. An odd feeling, to feel sorry for Long Beach’s women volleyball players. I found yesterday a picture that LBS posted on their website yesterday that shows their players in full frustration at what I presume was BG’s red card call versus Irvine, but it could have been taken at just about any of their matches. Of course, almost any team could have such a picture taken of them at some point in the season. But what coach and their SID would post it on their website? It seems to show a sense of pride is being instilled in displaying protest against calls, which is an odd thing to promote in your volleyball program.

  41. jmy November 16, 2016 10:34 am

    39. BG is definitely a talented coach, but his teams over the years have been a direct reflection of his fiery, often confrontational style. He often pushes the envelope in terms of conduct, and in the second meeting between LBSU & UCI, his behavior likely cost his team the BW championship…

  42. jmy November 16, 2016 10:38 am

    41. Very well said…I’m surprised that he hasn’t gotten more red cards over the years…

  43. ALLAN November 16, 2016 10:42 am

    ZOT.

  44. todde November 16, 2016 10:54 am

Tongo, as I mentioned in another post. I felt it was in poor taste for Hawaii fans to be showing the red card. We still need to respect BG as the coach of Long Beach State.

  45. turfwar November 16, 2016 11:30 am

Mahalo to Tako and Maverick. That seemed like such an odd recruiting story from the get go. Glad that she found a place to play.

  46. Ron November 16, 2016 11:43 am

Ditto from me turf war, she seems so happy. I far as winning the BW, if we don’t sweep this weekend we won’t go far in the “Big Dance” anyway.

  47. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 1:14 pm

I thought the red cards at the SSC was well done, subtle and showed the level of understanding that Hawaii fans have about the game. It wasn’t like they were putting them up every play. Only came out when Gimmillaro argued something.
Have witnessed far worse at other venues, including anti-Semitic and anti-Hawaiian slurs.

  48. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 1:18 pm

    32. don’t think UH ‘lost out’ on her. She chose Utah for a variety of reasons and it didn’t seem as if UH was recruiting hard.
as for Roth, was going to be a walk-on Listed at 5-11

Wahine will add a 6-2 walk-on OH next year. From California. once I talk to the mom can tell you more.
