Thanks for the info, plan to be there for Senior night. Need to find a white shirt without a stain on it. Look forward to hearing about the 6′ 2″ walk-on.

Let’s go Bows and win out…

  2. Andrew November 16, 2016 2:35 pm

As a response to the previous page comments, I agree that the red cards were a great idea. I also don’t think it was “over the line” as it’s a lot more tame than things done at other venues. In fact I haven’t been there so I can’t confirm, but for people who have, isn’t LBSU one of the worst in the conference as far as the crowd is concern? I remember hearing stories on the radio by UH fans who attended games at the pyramid as well as encountering LBSU fans at the conference tournament for basketball in Anaheim. I think the SSC has world class fans although I do wish the atmosphere was a bit more intimidating hostile.

  3. hollycow November 16, 2016 2:59 pm

Cindy, I hope you’ll talk to the mom’s walk on pronto. Defensive specialists yes, but outside 6’2″ hitters? I can’t recall those types walking on. I would think the top class tall hitters have already been scouted and signed on. Unless she’s like an Annie Mitchem mindset, determined since little to play for Shoji and Hawaii. Waiting anxiously.

  4. tako November 16, 2016 3:17 pm

Here is something to consider. ALOHA is powerful and positive. Personally, love what we do. And, Senior night is the highlight and culmination of journeys that players have taken and hopefully, what will bring future Wahine to our program. Being world class with “class,” it a worthy goal. -Go Wahine

  5. noblesol November 16, 2016 3:27 pm

Concur with the Aloha sentiment, however Hawaii also has a Warrior tradition. The yin to the aloha yang. Captain Cook and his crew experienced the aloha tradition of Hawaii until they abused it, then they experienced the warrior tradition. Both are part of Hawaiian culture, both to be appropriately embraced in balanced measure. JMHO, understand completely if others see it differently.

  6. rage777 November 16, 2016 4:34 pm

I’ve been to the Pyramid about 10 times over the years to watch men’s and women’s volleyball and have never encountered a problem with any of their fans. I’ve sat on the LBSU side and the UH sides, never had a problem. I don’t think they are as knowledgeable as UH fans, but they are very passionate about their team.

  7. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 5:21 pm

    Top 25
    4) Kansas def. West Virginia 25-18, 18-25, 25-18, 20-25, 15-8
    6) North Carolina def. NC State 25-16, 25-11, 25-20
    7) Texas def. Texas Tech 25-22, 25-14, 25-15

  8. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 5:30 pm

    3. doesn’t need to be pronto. she’s committed. looks to be a nice player.

  9. kahuna November 16, 2016 5:41 pm

I don’t think its “cross the line” regarding the red card. The fan was referring to something he did on the volleyball court and not in his personal life. If UH fans insulted his family or used profanities or made fun of his looks or something like that then it would be uncool but just waving a red card is good harmless fun…..no different from fans shouting “AIRBALL”when a shooter miss the rim in basketball.

Good harmless fun was what it was. UH fans need to stop acting like we need be polite all the time. We should be able to have fun. If you don’t like it then just don’t participate in it. No need take the fun away from someone else.

Not everyone have fun the same way.

  10. Maverick November 16, 2016 6:22 pm

I’m tempering my expectations for the 6’2″ OH. Height is good, but I have no idea what her game is like. Lots of questions, particularly because no one else claimed her with a scholarship. How’s her arm, can she terminate? How physical is she? Passing skills? Is she a project? Or just under the radar like Maglio? I hope for the best, but just too many unknowns.

  11. hollycow November 16, 2016 6:56 pm

Cindy, I apologize for the pronto term. I really appreciate your inside info, like this unexpected walk on. Maverick has a bunch of questions of her abilities, her being unsigned and all. But who knows, maybe there is a scholarship offer on the table for her in 2018 and on if she shows her worth. That maybe a reason for her walking on for 2017.

  12. Eric96822 November 16, 2016 6:59 pm

The 6’2″ OH walk-on reminds me of 6’3″ OH Michelle Waber. Never heard of her coming to Manoa and then all of a sudden she was part of the recruiting class. I am not sure if Waber was on scholarship though.
Speaking of recruits. I just saw the Texas womens’ volleyball website page and saw their recruit 6’4″ Brionne Butler. That is some extremely powerful, scary hitting. Reminds me of Magaly Carvahal of Cuba. She is the #2 recruit in the country behind #1 6’2″ Lexi Sun, whom the Longhorns also have coming in. I can understand that Lexi would be #1 if she were more of an all-around player, but that Butler is soooooooo dynamic! We need some height to stop her if we ever mess with that team in the future.

  13. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 7:18 pm

10-11. yep too many unknowns. we shall see.
    11. no worries. didn’t take offense.

BUT can tell you that the Big West likely to have an announcement tomorrow. Doesn’t sound like it will be too much of a surprise, given the recent discussion here.

  14. T103 November 16, 2016 7:23 pm

Cindy, is austin’s sister in UH coaching staff ?

  15. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 7:23 pm

as for the men’s team, UH wins 25-20. SportConX more like Kailua Volleyball Club

  16. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 7:29 pm

Warriors hit .500, 3 kills for Fey, van Tilburg and Matautia. Combined 11 SEs. for SCX, Ryan Leung 7-1-8, had 7 of the team’s 11 kills.

  17. Ashley November 16, 2016 7:30 pm

totally off topic, but i was rewatching several of the Wahines matches and notice that Nikki always has what looks to me like a bandage of some sort on her ear. anyone know what that is? i am just curious.

  18. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 7:30 pm

    13. Yes, Gabby is on the men’s staff. has been for a couple of years.

  19. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 7:32 pm

    16. think it’s to cover earring studs.

  20. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 7:38 pm

Warriors win Set 2 25-21. Wade said they’d play minimum of 4 but the Pali does close at 930 and he does live in Kailua.

  22. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 7:55 pm

Van Tilburg with 10 kills> Leung leads SCX with 9. Entertaining. Pretty good defense. Tony Ching coming off the bench as coach to play OH.

  23. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 8:00 pm

Cal Poly women just finished their practice and are in the arena to watch this.

  24. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 8:25 pm

UH wins Set 3 25-12. as promised they are playing a fourth.

  25. T103 November 16, 2016 8:26 pm

I wonder if this is Austin adjusting to collegiate level vball ? A lot of his swings have been going out. #16 his a pretty hard ball, reminds me of Stijin. Been a fun match to watch

  26. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 8:28 pm

Saw that the up ref from the LBS-CSUN matches a few weeks ago against Hawaii died after suffering an aneurysm while officiating a match. Dan Apol was 40.

  27. T103 November 16, 2016 8:28 pm

Although I will say Austin does hit well from back row

  28. Maverick November 16, 2016 8:36 pm

    13. Just speculating, but a couple of things the Big West could announce: some sort of censure of BG, or something about fan behavior at matches. Pretty sure it won’t involve a 6’2″ walk-on for UH…lol

  29. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 8:37 pm

    Warriors win Set 4 25-17.

  30. Cindy Luis November 16, 2016 8:47 pm

    28. just passing along what I was told about there likely being an announcement from Big West.

  31. Maverick November 16, 2016 9:01 pm

    30. And it not sounding like much of a surprise given the recent blog discussions. My speculation was based on that part of the post.

  32. Maverick November 16, 2016 9:09 pm

Or maybe a congrats to UH on wining the conference title and AQ, after beating Poly.

  33. mauna November 16, 2016 9:44 pm

    12. Eric…. Brionne Butler touches 10’11” #2 PrepVolley Senior Aces.
Came up with a name, with guess work, to throw out there until we hear from Cindy, uncommitted April Ball 6’2″ OH, Westlake High.

  34. Maverick November 16, 2016 9:51 pm

    33. If so, here are a couple of pics of her:

    http://photos.dailynews.com/2016/10/photos-westlake-beats-calabasas-in-girls-volleyball/#20

  35. Maverick November 16, 2016 10:39 pm

    33. By comparison, Penn State’s Haleigh Washington touched 10’9″ as a high school senior.

  36. kahuna November 16, 2016 10:58 pm

If April Ball is indeed the walk on….her numbers will probably tell why she is a walk on. According to Maxprep she average only 1 kill per set and only .4 blocks per set. Not great numbers by any mean. She was however a four year starter so maybe she has other qualities that can be of help to UH.

She is listed at 6-2 and also listed as an OH/MB on her HS roster so she could fill roles in either positions. She can also provde size for the “B” team to give the starters a different look in practice. With the lost of Taylor and Mitchem next season…..Ball can provide size at the OH position in practice.

  37. haleiwacrossfitter November 17, 2016 5:37 am

From previous thread regarding seeding with nobleson.

I’m pretty confident they don’t seed past the top 16. There might be some discussion inside that ncaa meeting where they would want whom THEY consider the top two teams in a sub regional to meet in the final, but purely speculation and no official seeding is done outside the top 16.

  38. Maverick November 17, 2016 8:07 am

37 and noble–See sections 2.3 and 2.4 of the following:

    http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2016DIWVB_PreChamp_Manual_20160914.pdf

Not entirely clear how the non-top 16 are specifically bracketed.

  39. Maverick November 17, 2016 8:10 am

    38. Continued, the best I can find this morning regarding seeding and bracketing…this is from the women’s soccer site, but the principles generally apply across the non-revenue generating NCAA sports:

    https://sites.google.com/site/rpifordivisioniwomenssoccer/ncaa-selection-seeding-and-bracketing-criteria

If you can locate the specific policy manuals, you may get more clarity on the issue.

  40. blunite November 17, 2016 8:15 am

    RE: Walk-On

Volleytalk Proboards has a few names tossed around, notwithstanding Cindy’s latest scoop.

    RE: Post Season Talk

Cal Poly match is not a done deal. Last match could have gone either way, Hawaii could not stop their OHs (except for Van Winden). Recall they run a fast offense and Hawaii could not close the block.

  41. noblesol November 17, 2016 10:01 am

    #37, #38, #39
    Thanks for the links Mav.

Yes, agreed, there are 16 ‘true’ seeds for determining sub-regional hosting privilege. I was using the term ‘seed’ broadly and incorrectly. There will be four roughly ‘geographic’ brackets that have four of the 16 seeded teams as sub-regional hosts. Then the selection committee sets up the four brackets for a single elimination tournament ending in a Final Four. The committee has to select which of the 16 hosting seeds go into which of the four ‘geographical’ brackets, and then where the remaining 48 teams will go. The selection committee decides which ‘non-seeded’ team goes to which sub-regional and how they will be ranked within the sub-regional (#2, #3, or #4), and they can consider RPI and ‘other factors’.

Essentially, they have to seed 16 and rank all 64, create four ‘geographic’ brackets and group the seeds into groups of four in each bracket, then consider ‘other factors’ to balance the brackets, and reward the higher ranking seeds with matches against the lower ranking teams in each sub-regional. ‘Other factors’ can apparently include ‘avoidance’ factors, such as avoiding putting teams in the same conference into the sub-regional, and avoiding putting a team into a sub-regional that is way outside of its normal geographic bracket. My recollection from last year’s tournament was that one of the other factors they can consider is recent performance. However the NCAA rules are written with enough latitude that they are essentially guidelines. At the end of the day, they don’t have to explain what they did or why, but it is pretty clear that teams that they rank toward the bottom of the other 48 non-seeded teams will most likely wind up being ranked the #4 team in their sub-regional and face the seeded host in their Round 1.

Bottom line for Hawaii is they have to win out to maintain their RPI, and to fill out their ‘other factors’ resume and enter the tournament with the right tournament mind-set, their goal needs to be dominate and lose no sets. Pedal to the metal. Leave no doubt in anyone’s mind, most importantly their own minds, that they are tournament ready, for real, and not a team that anyone wants to see in their bracket let alone their sub-regional. It starts tonight with a tough opponent. Wahine fans can help, they can show up and be loud, and they can make a difference.

  42. Kahuna November 17, 2016 11:25 am

Regarding Austin Matautia…he must have done well in practice to warrant playing in four sets. I think he is the only players to play all four sets.

There is no doubting his physical ability. He is 6-4 and have a 41 inches vertical leap but he is extremely thin IMHO. I would like to see him gain some muscle so he can put extra MPH on his hits. Maybe he should hang out with Pat Gasman because Pat is one very large man. I don’t recall we having someone as big as Pat before. I think Gasman will be a force also along with Matautia.

We are so deep with talent that we are going to have some very talented players sitting on the bench. Rosenmeir will have to beat out Matautia and Fey for PT. Rado Purupunov and Stijn will fight for one spot. Worsley and Franciscovic will do battle at setter and the PT at MB will be a three way fight.

  43. jm2375 November 17, 2016 11:50 am

Kahuna – #42 – according to Charlie Wade, Austin Matautia is quick – quick arm, quick jump, etc and is a legit 6’5″. Also, Tuileta is expected to join in January. He may be used in the backcourt until he works himself into the rotation. The Hilo boys are battling it out at libero.

The Warriors are a young team (4 Srs, no Jrs) but with good depth. It’s gonna be a fun season.

Would’ve liked to see more players play last night, especially those that redshirted or didn’t get much playing time last year, like James Anastassiades.

BTW, anyone know why Nainoa Frank wasn’t in uniform last night?

  44. Duster November 17, 2016 12:09 pm

Is Big West announcement an invite to UCSD? Giving the Wahine a travel partner?

  45. Duster November 17, 2016 12:16 pm

Just a guess since the students voted to increase student fees to compete at Division I with the intent to petition for membership in BWC – and this great publication reported on it:

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/2016/05/24/sports/sports-breaking/ucsd-will-petition-to-join-big-west/

  46. Eric96822 November 17, 2016 12:28 pm

Any word form the Bigwest yet?

  47. Eric96822 November 17, 2016 12:28 pm

Any word from the Big West yet?

  48. Duster November 17, 2016 12:57 pm

I guess my post regarding April Ball with multiple links was moderated.

On April Ball, she has had several matches where she had double digit kills this Fall.

  49. Maverick November 17, 2016 1:00 pm

    48. If you include more than one link per post, the website may block the post or require Cindy approve. If you include only one link per post, the post will go through.

  50. rage777 November 17, 2016 1:17 pm

    Kahuna,
I don’t think thin or muscular makes a huge difference in velocity. My favorite player of all-time (and probably others) was a skinny guy from Israel that hit like a rocket named Yuval.

  51. warriorfan November 17, 2016 1:26 pm

    43. I think maybe Nainoa and Colton Cowell are redshirting? neither were in uniform or have played?

  52. tongo November 17, 2016 2:00 pm

Okay, where is the BW big announcement? Does someone get the rebuke, censure, reprimand, scolding, admonition, lecture or slap on the wrist – BG or the Anteater fan? Or is the BW big announcement something totally different? San Diego State joining? Player of the Year? A year end volleyball tournament?

  53. kahuna November 17, 2016 2:04 pm

Rage….#50…I get your point but I don’t mean like body building muscle…maybe I should have use the word “stronger” but I understand what you saying. If you track the other kids on the team…like Kupono Fey, Hendrik Mol, etc…you can see they got bigger as they got older so there is hope that Austin will grow bigger as he get older.

BTW…Yuval might have been a skinny kid but the guy was in his 20’s when he enrolled and also served in the Israeli military so the guy was actually a man.

  54. po'okela November 17, 2016 2:15 pm

does it have anything to do with the ref who suddenly passed away?

  55. kahuna November 17, 2016 2:24 pm

Hopefully, its about Hawaii not having to pay subsidies anymore cause we now “broke azz”…LOL

I think when San Diego join the BW, I think the league is going to make UH and UC Davis travel partners. They are going to keep all the So Cal schools together and put UH and Davis together since we are the only two schools who are not located in Southern California.

  56. Maverick November 17, 2016 2:27 pm

Cindy said the announcement was “likely” and not surprising given recent blog discussion. Doubt it is about the ref or any conference expansion plans. Given the time of day, I think it relates to UH winning the AQ, a likely but not 100% scenario tonite. And not surprising. If there was to be a rebuke of BG or spectators, I find it unusual that it didn’t happen earlier today. But I don’t run Big West communications…

  57. Maverick November 17, 2016 2:30 pm

Or congrats to Shoji hitting 1,200 wins

  58. tongo November 17, 2016 3:42 pm

Yeah, Dave’s 1200th win would warrant a big announcement – perhaps so.

  59. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 6:20 pm

    couple of things.
    Not April Ball.
Announcement not about UCSD or Dan Apol’s passing.
Not about Shoji getting 1,200. since it was supposed to be out today and Shoji hasn’t reached it.
Believe it was regarding Gimmillaro but have not seen anything. was just passing along what I had been told at practice yesterday which was ‘likely.’

    48. haven’t been on all day so will have to check various blocking filters. as mentioned. multiple links trigger a block.

  60. Cindy Luis November 17, 2016 6:22 pm

Duster, it was in Pending likely because of all the links.

    new thread up for Thursday.
