“Burn the boats”

In the UH baseball dugout, there is this sign:

Burn

It is a reference to when Spanish Conquistador Herman Cortes and his expedition force landed at Veracruz in 1519. Cortes told his men: “Quemar los barcos.” The order to “burn the boats” was the rallying cry that there would be no turning back on this mission.

It is a theme UH baseball coach Mike Trapasso has implored, that the ‘Bows are all in for this season.

The UH men’s basketball team also should embrace this theme. The ‘Bows bought round-trip tickets for this final regular-season road trip to California because of the uncertainty on whether a postseason ban will be lifted. It would be a show of confidence and bravado if the ‘Bows tore up the return tickets — or the equivalent of tearing up e-tickets — and make plans to continue on to next week’s Big West Tournament in anticipation of a favorable outcome. I get that competing in the tournament only to later find the ban was intact would drag the penalty on to next year. But, hey, bird in hand. This is a good team that is playing well and even though better things are expected next year, there are no guarantees. I’ve been on this Earth long enough to know that, as the locker-room saying goes, tomorrow is not promised. So burn the metaphorical boat, plan to be in the tournament, and if it doesn’t work out, keep appealing.

Former UH slotback Mike Washington is training in town ahead of next month’s start to the Arena Football League season. Washington signed with the AFL’s new Washington franchise. After the AFL season ends, he plans to return to Shanghai to play in China’s football league.

Kenton Chun, the former UH kicker and part-time magician, is doing well as the kicker for the Iowa Barnstormers of the Indoor Football League. As you recall, Chun’s most memorable kick was achieved indoors when he lifted the Warriors over Idaho.

ST ~ I met a young SUV sized Samoan lad while @ Hickam AFB yesterday. Look out for this LB/FB prospect who’s been invited to walk on as soon as his transcripts from a D2 program in Iowa is verified.

NSF ~ Yes…I’m still keeping an eye on all things Tsaiko out here on the ceded lands. Like you and your followers out on the North Shore, we are looking forward to an even bigger and better fb season.
    Go Warriors!

Tsaiko fever usually starts to rise about this time of year. Another Player who’ll be trying to win a Safety position, was invited to my 2016 NY eve party by my nephew, and former Warrior DE, Niko Uti. This young man joined our Warrior team from out of the Pittsburgh PA. area, and was indoctrinated in the island traditions by my nephew ‘Kaipo’ (leader of the Tsaiko All Star Band). I’m hoping he will give us the speed and quickness to ‘Search & Destroy’ anyone who violates his space!

Frankly, I would rather see a Hawaii slogan
up there, like a Broken Paddle, or,
    Go For Broke, or ___________?

    Ipu Man:
I vaguely recall Kamehameha using a similar tactic of destroying canoes. Didn’t he give a pep talk that led to the association of i mua with Kamehameha?

  9. Ipu Man March 1, 2017 1:43 pm

    ST, I dunno.
But it means to go forward, I do know.
As for Kamehameha, he had a “gun” boat.
    That helps.
Sort of like having a home run hitter batting clean up…
Or Colt Brennan as your qb.
    🙂

Baseball team should adopt the slogan “Fire The Coach”. Trapasso has been mediocre for two decades.

And don’t worry about the basketball team, they’ll be fine now that they have Ganot and got rid of Gib. Take the penalty this year, we’ll consistently be in the Big Dance from now on. The Big West is a weak conference and Gib was just mediocre at best.

ST — good advice from a long-time sports writer. Tomorrow is not guaranteed in sports. It is obviously better to go ahead and later ask for forgiveness (appeal) than to ask for permission.

RoyGBivs — I need your email addy. Please send me an email at steveM.hnl at gmail.

  12. Warbow March 1, 2017 2:46 pm

They should put a sign over Trapasso’s office that reads, “In over my head” or “Anyone can have an off decade” or “Everyone is a loser. Winners are just losers with more patience” or “Those who don’t want to take risks in life end up being the losers” or “Pressure squeezes effort out of winners and excuses out of losers” or “Unimaginative thinking has never produced a genius”. Pick one.

Not that what we say here will have any impact on how (and when) the NCAA’s COI rules or what UH decides to do, but I have to disagree with the honorable blog host in this case. If the NCAA is still lollygagging come Saturday, UH should “self-impose” the postseason ban for this season rather than have it hanging over the program for another year.
As a wise friend pointed out: The team began the season aware that there could likely be no postseason. If the NCAA rescinds the ban, it’s an unexpected bonus. Also, would it be fair to Mike Thomas, whose decision to redshirt might have been influenced by the situation? And could the same be said for Drew Buggs?
Let’s hope the NCAA provides a resolution in the coming days.

  17. Andrew March 1, 2017 4:36 pm

I don’t know how these things work but since the appeals committee sent it back to the infractions committee to re evaluate the sanctions of UH, are they obligated to lessen the sanctions?

I would think that if they don’t rule on the appeal by the deadline, and UH upholds the post season ban for this season, then if the infractions committee was to make a ruling on lessening the sanctions, then they would more than likely lessen the scholarships taken away right?

  18. H-Man March 1, 2017 5:20 pm

The way I see it, the ban by the NCAA is currently in force. So if UH does not hear from the NCAA prior to the start of the conference championship games, UH cannot participate and the ban will have been executed. There will be no ban for next season. However, UH can regain lost scholarships if the infractions committee should reverse its ruling regarding scholarship reductions.
