Inbox is open

Yep, it’s that day of the week when we open the Inbox to some of your questions about UH football.

Questions may be about any player except not directed to true freshmen (who are off limits for interviews during the regular season).

No good: “Kealaboy, what do you think about being in the safety rotation this year?”

Good: “Coach Elimimian, what do you think about Keala Santiago being in the safety rotation this year?”

Thanks.

We’ll post some answers on Wednesday.

Coach Rolovich, Good win against Nevada for many reasons. How much did the bye week help and how do you keep the momentum up for another road game? Have you changed any travel strategies for the SJSU match to have the players at their maximum?

  3. Bryson October 3, 2016 11:41 am

Coach Rolo How can someone get the chance to watch a game from the sidelines?

  4. hitmanhart October 3, 2016 11:47 am

coach rolo how is mel davis doing ? and looks like the middle has been open in passing game why not more passing to a speedy slotback running a slent ?
still waiting to see that smile on the field !! you are doing a great job !! enjoy

  5. UH Fan For Life October 3, 2016 11:51 am

Coach Rolo, congratulations to you, your staff and the team for the win against Nevada. The offense, defense and special teams allplayed well, and even though there were a few dropped passes or missed tackles, the players overcame the miscues and showed that they believe in the game plan and the coaching staff by making plays when needed.
We were at the game and enjoyed the team’s Ha’a performance before the coin toss (when there were more fans in the stadium) rather than after warmups before the team heads back to the locker room. Given that Hawaii has been penalized in the past for performing the Haka on the field, what is the criteria that the officials use in calling (or not calling) an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for a team’s Ha’a / Haka performance?
Also liked the play call with the wildcat formation – it caught the Nevada defense off guard for an easy score.
Hope to see another win @ SJSU.

  6. Blu808 October 3, 2016 11:54 am

Coach Rolo, I enjoyed seeing a wildcat wrinkle in the offense. Will there be more new wrinkles or sets used as the season goes along in order to get the ball in our playmakers hands?

  7. Maddog50 October 3, 2016 11:57 am

Can u please tell Kau Gifford I’m pulling for him to climb over backs to get on the field now! He has talent-

  8. Egan Kawamoto October 3, 2016 12:01 pm

Are we ever going to get a uniform with that design on one leg again?

  9. jeezy33 October 3, 2016 12:28 pm

Coach Lempa, is Jerrol going to play end/rush OLB for the remainder of the season? Much more natural there vs ILB.

  10. Akamai Okole October 3, 2016 12:42 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

No good: Over or under? 😈

    Good(?):

from the “Chickens before they hatch Dept”

Rolo, one measuring stick of a CFB program is said to be the # of players it can place on NFL rosters. With last year’s UH results being a “1” and this season’s Michigan team a “10”, how far do you feel the team has moved to date since you took over and how far do you envision being able to take it?

  13. warriorsanddolphins October 3, 2016 12:55 pm

What is the status of Daniel Lewis? I know he was a starter at safety last year and i think he was injured and was ready to come back soon.

  14. NorthShoreFan October 3, 2016 1:15 pm

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

Watching Odell Beckham warm up and he’s catching passes with one hand!??!!? Just snatching the ball from the air…like picking grapefruits!…awesome
When he catches the ball with both hands, can’t see half the ball…dude got some really big….hands.

Coach Rolo, was it a matter of personnel changes or is the team finally getting to the point where everyone understands the Offense and Defense game plans?
    BELIEVE…RUN THE TABLE!

  15. bowwar October 3, 2016 1:45 pm

Excellent Game and a very dominating performance…Perhaps, one of the best I’ve seen a Warrior team play. That being said, there a couple of questions…Is Brown having a hard time throwing the deep pass? I thought he underthrew at least two passes which would have been TDs if he led the receiver properly. For coach Lempa, are you doing anything increase the pressure of the opposing QBs when they are passing? There was some improvement this past game, but the QBs are still having too much time to survey the field.

  16. (Jesse)James October 3, 2016 2:02 pm

    Good afternoon Tsaikos…

NSF…#14….you know what they say about guys with big hands???? Can catch good….LMAO Thanks for bringing the wok to help fry stuff at the T-gate. We had a good turnout…hopefully more at the next one. Good to see some old timer Tsaikos return. 🙂

Coach Rolo….Great win. Loved the vibe the team had from the opening kick off. I remember telling the people I was watching the game with that there was something different about the team…I could sense/feel it. The seemed to BELIEVE they could win.

Question….While I loved the game and effort…and the win, it seemed to me that some of that intensity was lost in the 4th Q…like the game was already decided. I’ve always been one who like to keep the gas pedal down until at least midway through the 4th…and then let up if I had a comfortable lead. Your thoughts and/or philosophy when it comes to that?

Mahalo….Keep up the good work and have a great game on Sat. GO WARRIORS BEAT DA SPARTANS!!!

  17. H-Man October 3, 2016 2:03 pm

This afternoon on 1420 (1-2 pm), Robert Kekaula was the guest interviewee. He brought up something that was really interesting – that during the game, RJ Hollis went up to coach Rolo to tell him to cut-out the nonsense and start running the ball down the Wolfpacks’ throat because they (the O-line) “had” these guys. Rolo instructed the OC to start a smash-ball offense. Well, it went something like that.

  18. hilorain October 3, 2016 2:14 pm

Coach, it seemed to me that some of the tackling issues were due to the players approaching their intended targets almost standing straight up or “high”. Vs. Nevada, it seemed that the players were tackling a little lower on the targets body with much better results, using a more “athletic” position. Was this something that was worked on during the bye or was a result of playing an opponent that was more physically similar to UH?

  19. cocobean October 3, 2016 3:05 pm

Coach, congratulations on how your team performed Saturday night. It was refreshing to see them play with the right amount of intensity and confidence. It’s funny how the right amount of emotion can change the personality of a team. They were the aggressors on both sides of the ball all night with the possible exception of the last half of the 4th quarter.

I know you’ll down play it but I really thought one of the reasons the team came out fired up was they wanted to win this one for you. Everyone knew how much winning this game meant to you. The whole team played with a “win one for the Gipper” attitude.

  20. Scott October 3, 2016 3:24 pm

Coach Rolo! Great win on Saturday! What is the status of the following freshman, Ikem Okeke, Scheyenne Sanitoa, and Kalen Hicks? Will they see the field this year?

  21. z October 3, 2016 3:28 pm

Coach Rolo did coach Ault talk to the players before the game? If he did what did he say?

  22. kapakahi October 3, 2016 3:48 pm

    Coach Rolo,

How have true frosh DT Viane Moala and redshirt NG/DT Samiuela Akoteu improved since the beginning of the season?

  23. Maddog50 October 3, 2016 3:48 pm

    JGW?

  24. shadow October 3, 2016 3:49 pm

“Must win” game vs Nevada I thought – Congrats & Mahalo to Coach Rolo & team for coming through!

Question: Wouldn’t it be better to kick into the end zone ALL the time for no return than risk giving up significant yardage or even see one get taken to the house? (Tackling & kick return coverage still seems shaky & Rigo is your strength .)

  25. kapakahi October 3, 2016 3:57 pm

    Coach Rolo,

What is the updated status on WR Devin Stubblefield?

  26. Warrior fan October 3, 2016 4:02 pm

Coach, first off Congrats on the big win!! It’s been a while since we’ve seen such a dominate performance by our warriors.

Question: What will the team have to do to win on the road this weekend?

  27. Buffoman October 3, 2016 4:05 pm

Was I seeing wrong, but I thought I saw a couple of new folks on the D-line on Saturday. If I wasn’t, who were they?

  28. islandman October 3, 2016 4:10 pm

Colorado, who was defeated by UH last year, is currently ranked No 21 in the AP poll.

  29. AllG October 3, 2016 4:40 pm

Will Stubblefield redshirt this year? Seems that we have good depth at WR and he has already missed almost half the season.

  30. kapakahi October 3, 2016 4:41 pm

    #27,

    #98 Moala & #91 Akoteu #91. Also #97 Ka’au Gifford returned from his injury.

  31. AllG October 3, 2016 4:42 pm

Coach what is the status of Daniel Lewis? When should we expect to see him back?

  32. DKO October 3, 2016 4:46 pm

Great win for Hawaii. However not that I want to rain on the parade, but the penalties still seem excessive. Why can’t they cut down on the number of penalties?

  33. bogeywarrior October 3, 2016 5:03 pm

Coach Rolo, please with the stadium clock operator, I believe he doesn’t understand the new rule outside of the last 3 minutes of each half. On incomplete passes, I believe the game clock starts when referee puts ball in play. Or when ball carrier goes out of bounds, clock should start again at referees signal.

  34. cocobean October 3, 2016 5:04 pm

As far as coaching is concerned. Is it just one defensive line coach coaching all the positions or does someone handle the tackles and nose guards and someone else the defensive ends?

  35. Derek October 3, 2016 5:28 pm

Coach, what are the team’s recruiting needs for next year, by positions and how many?

  36. seewhy October 3, 2016 6:06 pm

    #29

Stubblefield redshirted during the 2014 season after he suffered a season ending knee injury during fall camp. Will be interesting to see what Rolo plans to do.

  37. NorthShoreFan October 3, 2016 6:27 pm

JJ…#16…Thanks for letting us deep fry your Beeg Sausage…da wahines wen luv it!

  38. H-Man October 3, 2016 6:53 pm

Watching the re-telecast of the Nick Rolovich Show reminded me to thank Gaylord for coming out to do what he does – fire up the fans.

  39. A-House October 3, 2016 7:06 pm

    Coach Rolo:

reaction from recruits after the inspiring offensive and defensive “effort”?

  40. hilosupaman October 3, 2016 7:26 pm

    Coach Rolo,
It seems like the fans overall are buying in and starting to show up and make some noise, but it does seem like the student section is still lacking. Are there any ongoing efforts to increase student participation?

Great win, Congrats! I think we can all sense the attitude changing #EXPECTTOWIN

  41. kapakahi October 3, 2016 7:45 pm

    Coach Rolo,

Are you intending to schedule any official recruiting visits for mainland recruits (or even those from Australia & American Samoa) to Hawaii for any of the remaining UH home games (so that they can experience the home game environment first-hand)?

Just curious since WR prospect Isaia Mullen tripped to Oregon State for the Boise State game the following weekend after verbally committing to UH.

  42. RB October 3, 2016 7:57 pm

Coach Rolo, what’s the status with the Alabama transfer? I’m sure he is good enough to play, being he did come from Alabama.

  43. Ajoe October 3, 2016 9:09 pm

I’ve asked this question of previous head coaches dating all the way back to coach Tomey. What can we do, not just as a team, a university, and a Warrior Nation, what can we all do to bring home a national championship?

  44. H-Man October 3, 2016 11:06 pm

Oregon St? I wouldn’t worry too much as they just got beat by Colorado 47-6. And if he wants to de-commit from Hawaii, as Rolo would say, we can’t worry about those that don’t want to play for Hawaii. We want those that do. Right?

  45. seewhy October 3, 2016 11:21 pm

    H-Man, I second that.

  46. al October 4, 2016 12:57 am

Great win coach. Seems like the team is starting to believe and understand the systems.

Offensively the oline has stepped it up and may be the unsung heroes thus far. Their efficiency should also be recognized in helping Dru Brown emerge. Oh and not to forget the read option also know as the “up the middle” by some.

On defense the personnel changes this past weekend looked genius coupled with the improved health, in particular Meffy Koloamatangi and David Manoa.

At this point coach Rolo…what is the one thing(s) that you would like to see improve by Saturday afternoon?

  47. Maddog50 October 4, 2016 2:36 am

Not a question-here we go just one more time. Game on mainland no chance to view game. This is absurd. Contacted everyone I can and here I sit doomed to listen to BC!!!

  48. Kris October 4, 2016 5:13 am

What is Coach Rolovich’s scheduling philosophy going forward? Thanks!

  49. Palolo_2LA October 4, 2016 5:15 am

Coach Rolo, are their any plans for getting the ball into Keelan’s hands to use his speed (i.e) reverses, wildcat, screens?

  50. Abunai October 4, 2016 6:06 am

    Awesome win coach Rolo!

Love how you implementing more RPO’s (run play options) more and more! I think the most improved aspect of the game is the Oline! They have been playing lights out. They have had a few mistakes but by far the most improved unit.

My question is will you be using Ursua and Collie more in the offensive. The last few games they haven’t really broken out yet. I know you used Ursua as a wildcat in the red zone which I like since he had experience playing qb in HS.

Keep up the awesome work coach Rolo!!
    Live aloha play aloha!!

  51. Warfan808 October 4, 2016 6:31 am

    Great win coach,

Us Fans on the mainland can’t even see the away games now. Is there any pressure UH can put on the programmers of the games so that more UH fans can watch their team from afar? Thanks

  52. Warfan808 October 4, 2016 6:33 am

    Coach Rolo,

The defense seemed to be better in many ways against Nevada. Has there been any changes on D or are the players just feeding off the new energy the offense is showing?

I know this is my second question.

  53. Rodney October 4, 2016 6:44 am

Would like to see WR Bernard
    Play.Whats his status?

  54. Inyoface October 4, 2016 8:46 am

Has the starting center position changed since the first game?

  55. Inyoface October 4, 2016 8:47 am

Not a question for coach just wondering if anyone on here knew.

  56. Warbow October 4, 2016 8:59 am

Coach, are you planning having a week zero game every year? Seems to hurt early but helped with the extra bye week against Nevada.

  57. H-Man October 4, 2016 9:30 am

Yup, they flipped Leo Koloamatangi and Asotui Eli who is back at center. Don’t know if this is permanent, Maybe someone on the blog can elaborate/confirm. Also, when LT Dejon Allen got hurt, Leo went to LT and Elijah Tupai moved up to a guard spot.

  58. z October 4, 2016 9:36 am

    53. Yes. Leo Koloamatangi who started at center the beginning moved to left guard and Asotui Eli whom I really like at center who played there last year was the center against Nevada.

  59. (Jesse)James October 4, 2016 9:40 am

Maddog50 #46 and Warfan808 #50….The thing I find interesting is that ST mentioned that the MWC Officials watch a live stream of the game when evaluating players for the POW awards. Just saying…

  60. H-Man October 4, 2016 9:41 am

On defense coach Lempa has many alignments that call for different players or players in different positions. Hard to track all the different alignments. Especially when they feel its a passing down, 3rd and long, they’ve had Jeremiah Pritchard in the nose position and no DT. Two DEs or OLBs are wide. Really different, but it seems to work. Kiko Faalologo and Viane Moala are now part of a six player rotation in the D-line interior.

  61. 808warriorfan October 4, 2016 9:42 am

Way too many Holding & False Start penalties by the OL. I’d like to know what Coach Rolo & Coach Naeole are doing about it …

Best of luck vs SJSU … too bad we can’t bring Gaylord as part of the traveling squad. We’re 2-0 w/ him on the sidelines …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  62. Dano October 4, 2016 9:47 am

LB #44, Russell Williams, Jr. was very impressive on defense.

  63. mileHIwarrior October 4, 2016 10:25 am

Coach…any chances of recruiting in Colorado? Will be a battle with CU, CSU, AF, and WYO in very close proximity but like any other, a stud or 2 or 3 could be left over.

Kick some SJSU okole and looking forward to seeing you guys at AF in a couple weeks.
