Rolo’s turn to ask questions

Nick Rolovich has seized the mic and wants to ask readers these three questions:

> “Why wasn’t the whole stadium up and dancing to Kapena’s ‘Masese’ in the fourth quarter?”

> “Did you appreciate the ha‘a being done before kickoff?”

> “What can we do to bring more fans to the game and make the game experience better?”

    Am I first?

  2. wowlaulau October 4, 2016 10:33 am

    1st?

  3. haka October 4, 2016 10:34 am

Not sure why everyone wasn’t dancing, but the chee hoo’s were echoing.
    Loved the ha’a!
Hard hitting defense puts locals in da seats!

    Thanks Coach!
    Go Warriors!

  4. haka October 4, 2016 10:34 am

    You are DPK! You #1!!

  5. Bryson October 4, 2016 10:35 am

1.I was enjoying the view of Gaylord having fun dancing.

2.I like the Ha’a being done before kick off it would be even cooler if they faced the Mauka sidelines next time

3.Just Win…I think the word is gonna get out about the excitement of what we are doing offensively I think that’ll help also

  6. Bryson October 4, 2016 10:37 am

Can we bring back the starting lineup announcements again also!

  7. oldie October 4, 2016 10:38 am

    To answer #3:

Can they turn down the volume of the PA system during the game? Makes my ears hurt. Does the stadium get paid by the volume of their ads?

And can the PA system not compete with the UH band during the breaks? With UH band playing and the PA system going full blast, all you hear is noise.

Sorry for the senior citizen rant.

  8. Da Punchbowl Kid October 4, 2016 10:39 am

    Okay, that question is answered.

Love the ha’a! Leave it right where it is. I noticed that the ha’a was done with great enthusiasm by the Warriors. The ha’a did what it was supposed to do – inspire and excite. What we saw was inspired Warriors playing some exciting football. I am sure the fans felt the same way too.

  9. J-Dog October 4, 2016 10:42 am

    1. Not enough beers

    2. Enjoyed the Ha’a being done when it was done. Perfect timing.

    3. Winning will bring the Hawaii fans back. Unfortunately a lot of bandwagoners and front runners, and not enough die hards. Saw the same thing at UH basketball. Amazing how crowded the SSC got toward the end of last year. Keep up the exciting defense/offense and fans will be back. Previous regime just made it really painful to be a UH football fan.

  10. Da808 October 4, 2016 10:43 am

I think in order to generat more interest, there needs to be more promotional stuff available. How about family packages available to the public. Example, 4 tickets, hot dogs, cokes and parking for say 100.00. Allow and invite HS and youth football teams and family to come to the game’s for free. The seats are empty anyway, and they’ll spend money at the concessions as we’ll as building a future fan base and local kids wanting to stay home and play for the home team. Professional sports teams do this religiouly, it should be done here as we’ll.

  11. J-Dog October 4, 2016 10:46 am

    3. (cont.) Enjoyed the huge on-field loudspeakers that used to play conch shell and E’OOO chant on 3rd and 4th down during the Colt Brennan years. I know some fans didn’t like it, but it gave me goosebumps every time.

  12. Da Punchbowl Kid October 4, 2016 10:47 am

Keep winning Coach. I think Saturday was a portend of what’s to come. We can feel the Pride returning to the Rock. Loved you on the coaches show. You speak from the heart. Fans feel it and the Warriors feel it.

May we suggest stickers on the helmet for big play?

    Live Aloha ~ Play Warrior!
    GO WARRIORS!!!

  13. Jenny Tales October 4, 2016 10:52 am

Yes, I think ha’a right before the game is the best time to do it. I just know in previous years, they said it took a lot of energy out of some of the players, which is understandable. As far as more fans, winning is what it’ll take. You saw it with men’s basketball, although that’s a little easier because SSC is right on campus and they had those theme nights.

  14. UH Fan For Life October 4, 2016 10:55 am

    1. went to the lua at the 4th quarter break so it would have been awkward dancing in the men’s room. Maybe UH dancers/cheer leaders/band can come up with standard dance moves that everyone can do together?
    2. like the ha’a before kickoff – more fans to see it, and it gets everyone pumped up for the kickoff.
    3. keep playing hard – making plays of offense and defense, hitting hard, offense converting on 3rd down and defense making the stops on 3rd and 4th downs. The Aloha Stadium staff at the parking gate 1 and entrance gates have been very welcoming the past two home games. Suggestions to increase attendance: 1) get more students out – seemed like the student section had a better turnout against UTM than UN 2) invite youth teams to come out – offer group team discounts in the upper yellow end zone sections (which are empty) for youth players and parents (any sport) if they wear their uniforms.

  15. azwarrior22 October 4, 2016 11:02 am

“What can we do to bring more fans to the game and make the game experience better?”

Black jerseys and helmet stickers! An offense that is pass first and a hard hitting defense. And go back to just “Warriors”.

  16. azwarrior22 October 4, 2016 11:03 am

And for me, personally, get into the PAC-12 so we play ASU and UA on a regular basis 🙂

  17. jonj October 4, 2016 11:16 am

To bring fans to the game 1st I would offer family packages in a family area. 2nd I would have a outside concert with popular local bands to bring the students and younger crowds to the stadium

  18. Blu808 October 4, 2016 11:20 am

    1. I think the crowd is probably getting used to Masese before the 4th quarter. I would prefer a song like how Wisconsin has Jump Around. Easier to follow and dance to.

    2. I appreciated the team doing the Ha’a before kickoff. Hopefully it will encourage more fans to show up at before kickoff.

    3. I believe that winning is always the answer for more people in the seats. I would suggest or ask for more contemporary music through the loud speakers. Really adds more excitement in the stadium and for the students. I would also suggest maybe visuals or videos on the jumbo tron of local celebrities or even players encouraging the fans to make noise. More interactive things on the jumbo tron and signage to add to the experience. Also had one last suggestion that someone look at improving the audio quality of the intro music before the team runs out of the tunnel. Seems like it’s a little soft or not as impactful as it should because of the volume or quality of the audio.

  19. tom-warriornation October 4, 2016 11:21 am

will the ha‘a being done before kickoff this Sat in San Jose–my wife, attending her first college football game, is so excited to see it firsthand; as the other 1000 Hawaii fans sitting at the 50 yd line right behind your bench will be!

  20. hitmanhart October 4, 2016 11:23 am

1st one : at home watch on pay preview !! enjoying it !! (big island)
    2nd: Enjoyed the Ha’a
3rd: make family night, bring a kid for free !!,after half time 1/2 price tickets !! or maybe get the score right win a sideline pass to the next home game?

  21. Ipu Man October 4, 2016 11:23 am

Make attendance by UH students mandatory to graduate…

  22. Honu888 October 4, 2016 11:25 am

    #9
Good point allowing those youth programs to be invited for free or at least a real good discount on tickets. Looking ahead to build our future Rainbow Warrior fans or even possible players.

I think that the food and consessions need to be upgraded.

  23. Ipu Man October 4, 2016 11:28 am

Maybe make a “basket weaving” type class called
“Football 101” where students can get an easy A
for attendance and publishing papers on how the
game went and how it could improve. And Put it all
    on the internet.

  24. Down with... October 4, 2016 11:30 am

1.) Kind of a hard song to rock to, more just bouncing around, head bobbing smiling and singing along. There’s a lot of Poly’s in the stands but much more Asians…so kind of hard to CheeeHooo with that Poly Pride when you Asian (which I am)…But I can RAIN—BOWS the heck out of the place. Maybe do that during the 3 to 4th quarter? Get the cheer leaders on both sides along with Gaylord rocking the stadium.
2.) Ha’a was cool but don’t know when I am supposed to Ku’e ku’e(?) with the boys. Need a refresher course pre game or something. I know the crowd is supposed to respond….oh well we got some time to work on it
3.) Win, win win…Gaylord was cool to bring back, kind of bridging the past with present. Maybe offer really discounted tix to all highschool and pop warner football kids. The stadium empty anyways. Could potentially impress some young kid to stay home and play for the home team!!!

  25. NotNasti October 4, 2016 11:31 am

More Fans? Put a stop to the pat-down bag searches. A man in front of me was chased down and had to hand over his binocular case, which when opened, had binoculars in it. My wife bought a clear bag to make it easier for the security to look into it. They still made her take everything out, which revealed her jacket and two ponchos. I thought they were trying to be more fan friendly. If aunty like bring one bento inside, and some boiled peanuts for uncle too, let um. If security were truly an issue, there should be metal detectors and x-ray machines.

Students? Work with a car dealership/moped, etc. to give a new car or moped to a student who attends all of the home games, to be awarded at the last home game. On-campus pep rally on game-day, with free food and drinks. The students can be herded directly from the pep rally onto waiting buses for transport to the stadium. Prizes to be awarded on the bus ride to the stadium. I dunno.

  26. Down with... October 4, 2016 11:32 am

oh and by the way…Good win Coach!

    the State needed that-Mahalo

  27. NotNasti October 4, 2016 11:33 am

Rolo: Please teach Gaylord how to shoulder roll. It pains me to see him flop on the ground and then roll.

  28. NorthShoreFan October 4, 2016 11:33 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

Dancing in the stadium? I have seen ushers ask people to sit down after complaints from the “older” peeps in attendance. Might want to check with stadium peeps about encouraging dancing, jumping around in the stadium. “You’ll be surprised at what you’ll find.”

The Ha’a is appreciated at any time! Got to find out why we get an “un-sportsman like penalty if we do the Ha’a. Teams used to ride a horse in and stuck a spear in the ground, run a huge cattle across the field, ring cow bells at crucial parts of a game and have a 100,000 people yell and scream during critical plays.
Aren’t these all un-sportsman like actions or gamesmanship or fan support or home field advantage?

    1. I’ve always felt we should heavily discount tickets in the upper yellow sections for walk up fans or non-season ticket holders. Longtime season ticket holders should be able to upgrade their seats at 1 year premium discount.
    2. Make a deal too good to refuse to the general public. Homecoming game is a good game to try this. Get a taste of UH Football and hope they come back.
    3. Open gates at half price during half time. (not sure if this is being done now) I think a lot of tickets might be sold for those who are in the parking lot “punishing the green” and the game is a “barn burner or a close” one.

Would getting Ewaliko on defense be an option? He has the physical attributes to be on the field but hasn’t been able to capitalize on his PT.
Maybe at a safety position or speed rusher/blitz package. He rides bulls and wrangle cattle so abusing QB’s should be a piece of cake! Just focus on…sic em…seek and destroy the QB…

  29. Down with... October 4, 2016 11:36 am

Not Nasti…what gate you enter on.? Go through our gate (5) they barely even look in our bag, they give the ol’ two hand side tap and off we go….of course we got nothing to hide, but at least they not doing the search and siege of the deadly binocular pouch.

  30. NorthShoreFan October 4, 2016 11:39 am

Pre-game Ha’a lessons for the crowd….would be awesome if the whole stadium did the Ha’a. Wonder what the refs would do then? If the team can’t do it the the crowd can.
Crowd funding…not….Crowd Ha’a?…..YES! Might be an awesome sight even if only get 15,000 +

  31. Old School Dave October 4, 2016 11:41 am

First, keep doing what you and your staff are doing, Coach! Mahalo for all of your efforts in restoring “hope” and “pride” back into the program, along with changing the culture up there!

Do away with PPV when the contract is up. Too easy for go your neighbor’s garage (with some Zippy’s chicken) and watch the game. Organize an official student section like Utah’s MUSS:

    http://ulink.utah.edu/s/1077/16/interior.aspx?sid=1077&gid=1&pgid=941

Eventually, build a 40,000 stadium on campus with luxury boxes.

  32. cocobean October 4, 2016 11:44 am

    1. Not enough students. I think when it comes to dancing in the stands or sing a longs the student section is where it all begins. Too many old futs like me didn’t know what song was playing. I always enjoy it when the student section is rocking and having a good time. Their enthusiasm is infectious.

    2. Ha’a. It’s good for team bonding, Warriors preparing for battle. I enjoy watching the team do it. Too bad it is a late arriving crowd with very few people in the stands.

    3. Cold fusion seems to be an easier problem to solve. This has been an on going question for years. The consensus answer seems to be by winning. To me the solution is long term. First you start by hiring a young coach(in coaching years) who is willing to dedicate his career to building a program that will become a point of pride for the entire State(think Joe Pa and Coach K type commitment). A program that can compete and earn respect on the National stage. A program that will inspire children to want to be play for the home team(think Wahine Volleyball). The young coach will need a all the support the school, legislature, business community and the fan base can give him(think BSU type support). The young coach will have to have a clear vision on how he plans to accomplish this and be able to convince others around him that this can be done. He has to live Aloha and play Warrior.

  33. whitey October 4, 2016 11:46 am

To get more game fans you need to present and market your team. Winning is a huge part of it, but there are many more ways to fill the stadium. You need someone who has common sense marketing and is willing to do it for free. You can ask your coaches, players,na Koa, or any interested Warrior fan for their input. My own input is to use 30 seats in section which has not been sold to bring in for free, kids and parents or chaperones from organized youth leagues. You will need new ticket holders in the near future so why not recruit future ticket holders.

  34. Gman23 October 4, 2016 11:56 am

A Pride Rock tailgate with live band, beer garden and pupus

  35. A-House October 4, 2016 11:56 am

    Coach Rolo:

#1: speaker system in our section has not been working for over 5 years — we hear the music, but I had no idea what the song was nor the musician.

#2: we look forward to seeing the Ha’a performed before every game – looked for it in Sydney and Ann Harbor.

#3: the offensive and defensive show brought back memories from the 70’s when UH had such a great defensive strategy/execution [ attacking defense ] — ditto the offense – there were NO “stars” assigned to any player, but they played well – lots of heart, never give up believing in themselves — last game was EXCITING to watch!!!!

I understand that Coach Lempa decided to ATTACK Reno’s offense, but it was a controlled aggression – I have NEVER seen a UH DL composed of LBers only. I have never seen UH use so many true freshmen in a game on defense.

exciting as it was, I was more excited to anticipate what will be in 2 or 3 years!!!

  36. Sapavith Vanapruks October 4, 2016 11:57 am

    1. I am not a singer or dancer
    2. I love it. However, we used to get flag for unsportsmanlike conduct before. As long as it is ok do it.
    3. Let fan have fun. We should be allow to bring noise maker and confetti. When I went to UNR last year, fan could pop the confetti all over the field. UNR use prisoner to come out and clean the stadium next day.

  37. Blu808 October 4, 2016 11:59 am

The student section looks sad. All I see is orange seats. There has to be more of an emphasis on programs or promotions during the week to get students more excited about going to the games. UH basketball team has theme nights and that seems to get the students excited but then again SSC is on campus so makes it easier for students to go.

  38. Bryson October 4, 2016 12:00 pm

I would like to see more of a game day atmosphere at the stadium, maybe starting with bringing back the Warrior Walk,it gives fans a chance to connect with the team as they enter the stadium also for players with family members attending the games it gives them a chance to wish them luck

  39. NorthShoreFan October 4, 2016 12:02 pm

Coach Rolo, give this to the UH School of Business.
Goal…to get more butts in thee stadium. Give them the reins to market and create enticements. Give the students credits for working on the project.
Obviously, promos aren’t the total answer. There needs to be much more together with corporate sponsorship and involvement.
Please don’t let the credit union have all their people on the field for presentations! I’m not sure about others but it bugs the heo out of me! Who da heck are these peeps anyways!?? Do they really need to be on the field or court to shake hands and hug our athletes? Can’t they be satisfied with just one person?,,,I digress…….

  40. islandman October 4, 2016 12:03 pm

As of this morning, Curran was looking for a spotter for the San Jose St. game. He said first class view of the game, etc.

    > “Why wasn’t the whole stadium up and dancing to Kapena’s ‘Masese’ in the fourth quarter?”

    > “Did you appreciate the ha‘a being done before kickoff?”

    > “What can we do to bring more fans to the game and make the game experience better?”

    1. It will take time since it’s something kinda new.

    2. Really appreciate the ha’a before kickoff. It would be nice for the crowd to participate in the ha’a by chanting E KU! E KU! along with the team. Get the word out to the crowd, via a flyer as you enter the stadium or via the big screen during the chant. Tell the crowd specifically what to do or chant.

    3. Just keep winning and being competitive!

  42. NorthShoreFan October 4, 2016 12:08 pm

One word to describe UH student support….SAD!

  43. 808 October 4, 2016 12:12 pm

    3. What can we do to bring more fans to the game and make the game experience better?

    Bring down the cost!

    Option 1: attend home games
Cost to attend home games (per game):
    i. 29 x 2 = 58
    ii. 20
    Sub Total = 78
    plus food $30
    Total = $ 108 per home game

    Option 2: PPV
Or, watch the game on PPV at a relatives house with friends and family and just worry about the food.

Easy choice for a lot of people.

  44. NotNasti October 4, 2016 12:19 pm

OSD: Your last point is being looked into right now, but on a much smaller scale (30K seats). Either on campus or on the old termite palace site.

Down With . . . : Gate 8. I actually park just a few feet from the entrance. I was able to watch the two security guys work over EVERYONE who entered their gate.

  45. islandman October 4, 2016 12:20 pm

UH Federal Credit Union involved with backing UH athletics. Also, Hawaiian Tel FCU Field at Aloha Stadium.

  46. H-Man October 4, 2016 12:21 pm

Too old to stand and cheer, but will cheer loudly and wave a pennant. Continue the pre-game Ha’a. Was nice to see and build some excitement. Continue with Gaylord if can. Larger crowds not anytime soon. Too many consecutive years of bad football drove fans away. It may take time to rebuild the football culture, and never to the level of the 80s and 90s where you saw crowds of 45,000+. PPV has taken care of that. Parking, or lack of parking should be a concern. The gen admin parking area was full to the gills. Even the VIP subscribed parking areas were fairly crowded, yet only 22,000 fans were in attendance. I can only imagine the traffic jam for a crowd of, lets say 32,000, will create. That will discourage more fans from returning. Hard to get them away from their big-screen at home with traffic and parking concerns. On a lesser note, improve the concession food. Miss the boiled peanuts and “good” saimin. Focus seems to be beer. No concession on the upper level south end zone, but saw beer dispensing locations. Security check was not a problem. I had my binocular case open for inspection and was waved through quickly. The ticket checkers were very friendly with smiles and nice words. It was exciting when entering the stadium. Music kinda loud, but I suppose it adds to the excitement. Headed straight for the roasted corn concession. Warriors put on a good performance. It was like old times.

  47. SteveM October 4, 2016 12:22 pm

    1. Sorry, I dozed off after the fans started to leave before the 3rd quarter ended. Lack of fans dancing or napping when we have a huge lead is a problem I hope to see often.

    2. Ha’a before kick off was good to see. But would that draw a penalty on the road?

    3. Ever been to carnival at 4:00 pm and then at 8:00 pm? The atmosphere of the carnival changes when the sun goes down. Aloha stadium had a carnival-like atmosphere in the 1980’s when the games started at 7:30 pm under the lights. Tailgate, have dinner at more usual time, and head into the stadium when it gets dark. I recall a lot of activities for fans and children were held on the concourse or S entry gate area. A game time after sunset should help.

  48. Ipu Man October 4, 2016 12:29 pm

Have Ethnic themed games and acknowledge Hawaii’s melting pot.
Game one: All Japanese get in free…with their own food.
Game two: All Philippine people get in free…with their own food.
Game three: All Chinese get in free…with their own food.
Game four: All Koreans get in free…but not with stinky kim chee (hee-hee).
Game five: All Portuguese get in free…but charge them $5 for crowd control.
Game six: Etc. Etc. Etc. 🙂

  51. 808 October 4, 2016 12:41 pm

    Do away with PPV?

If you see less interest now, wait until there is no PPV. The neighbor islands will be left in the dark. Those that do follow via PPV because of the cost will find something else to do attend home games. The money spent on UH football is discretionary money. Interesting concept!

Let’s see if UH Rainbow Warrior football will draw any fan interest if it is my way or the highway approach.

It’s hard to get the students involved because UH Manoa is a commuter school and the stadium is not on campus. Upgrade Ching Field to a 25K – 30K stadium then maybe there will be more student support.

  52. willieboy October 4, 2016 12:52 pm

after every first down made maybe a “first down rainbow warriors….CHEE HUU” on the p.a. system would be a nice tradition to start. pretty sure the crowd can get into that one. and not to bash on the band but maybe some snipits from rock songs over the p.a. instead of that star wars thing they play at crucial times of the game might be a lot more intimidating better. the “welcome to my house” song they plat at the stan sheriff always pumps me up before the game too.

    1. Live in Midwest so not aware of Masese.

    2. Like the new tradition … good for team identity.

    3. This is the most important topic. I would suggest two strategies: (1) find ways for dorm students to participate in challenge events prior to game or half time … build their identity like you built the team’s (include bus access from dorms and back) and (2) work with industry and labor groups to have special nights (at U. of Illinois, they have pork producers day, etc. and Fresno had a Ag producers connection with their helmet decals) — I would suggest Travel Industry night (competitions between hotel chains for raising money for UH), Labor union night, and you already have armed services night. Have a Taste of Honolulu night … etc. So it’s marketing and building participation opportunities for fans and organizations.

    4. Not asked about … but extend pay per view over the internet to mainland fans like me. OR … rebroadcast games for Mainland Sunday morning viewing for fans and team families over the internet. Without change this blackout, this could hurt recruiting … I think it also might be why Saint Juste wasn’t selected as MWC PofW. Again … this is a significant issue that mainland fans of UH and MWC are complaining about on internet.

    5. So, so happy to have you onboard at UH. I’m a fan who started going to games in 1950s (dad was a UH professor for 25 years) … and had short involvement with helping Dave Holmes staff in late 60s. You are pushing all the right buttons for rebuilding UH back both in wins and as a positive identity for community.

  55. bowwar October 4, 2016 1:03 pm

I didn’t even notice “Masese” being played in the 4th quarter…Kapena was never one of my favorite groups and think more contemporary Hawaiian music would get more fans interested. Also somewhat traditional “cheer music” such as Queen and other music usually helps to change the atmosphere…

I did like the ha’a being done on the sidelines and prior to kick-off…I was surprised the referees allowed it, but I think it got the team and fans on the “same page” to get prepared “to battle”. Those are the types of things that get fans involved and enthused.

Rome wasn’t built in a day…I think you (Nick) need to “rebuild” a culture around the team and extend it to the fans. You have to admit that JJ did a lot of that by changing the music (remember 10 Feet), having a Warrior Mascot (Vili), music piped in to get the fans involved, changed the Uniforms to the distinctive metallic green helmets and black uniforms with “tattoos” on it, and made the stadium an “experience” for the fans. On the backside, we need to revisit the whole “pay per view” issue and get rid of it or delay broadcasts to increase attendance. The old “HOME TEAM” concept exposed the State to 24-7 programming of UH Sports that was easily accessible. Also, they should make road game broadcasts free, to include more fans versus exclude them due to costs or limited cable access.

I like the hopeful improvement on the field, now we have to build around that…

  56. AllG October 4, 2016 1:17 pm

    1. Don’t want to see me dance

    2. Loved it and seemed to have worked

    3. Win and they will come!! Score more TDs on offense and don’t take your foot off the gas. Don’t want to see us trying to run clock with like 11 min to go in the 4th. That is Norm Chow conservative crap that lost leads for us in the past. And laying more licks on defense! Chee hooo

  57. clyde October 4, 2016 1:31 pm

    My two cents:

I like NotNasti’s idea of a game-day pep rally for students, then bussing them directly to the stadium. Student apathy is a problem (and so is the distance from campus to Halawa), so it needs some work and attention.

“Sweet Caroline” is kind of lame/dated, but the song has crossed generations and Pitt has turned it into a “Let’s Go Pitt!” fight song. Maybe … “Let’s Go ‘Bows!” Check it out:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0GskeQs5V0

PPV should be for football programs that consistently sell out, which wasn’t the case here. But the guaranteed money was too good to pass up, and now it’s here to stay. I’d like to see a return of the late-night replay instead of live PPV, but I doubt that will ever happen.

Parting thought: I saw highlights of Viane Moala in an all-star game against Hawaii players earlier this year. He was gangly, and raw. I noticed him Saturday against Nevada, and his transformation is impressive. On one play, he grabbed the OG, tossed him aside and assisted on a backfield tackle. Wow! Love his potential.

  58. Arcumfortis October 4, 2016 1:40 pm

It’s about entertainment coach. Prior to your arrival the fan base has suffered through 4 years of painfully boring and unsuccessful football. It took a lot for me to just keep showing up and I almost always left feeling worse than when I came, even on those very rare occasions when we would eek out a win. Last Saturday night there was just a glimmer of the excitement of the old days when Hawaii football meant high flying offense and aggressive, attaching defence. The fans will eventually return if we keep this up. But you have a lot of fed up fans who might be a little slow coming back. If we win again in San Jose it will generate a bit of a buzz and some excitement will build.

  59. poi October 4, 2016 1:51 pm

“Why wasn’t the whole stadium up and dancing to Kapena’s ‘Masese’ in the fourth quarter?”
Older, more reserved crowd is the problem.

    > “Did you appreciate the ha‘a being done before kickoff?”
It was the best time. Pumps up the players and fans and gets everyone UP for the kickoff. Doing it right after warmups was OK…IMO that is too much time before gametime so not as effective.

    > “What can we do to bring more fans to the game and make the game experience better?”
We need to start a tradition of cheering/chanting in the crowd. I know some people think it’s irritating, but I think our PA announcer needs to go step-by-step and tell everyone what to do throughout the entire game. Like have everyone yell “FIRST DOWN”. Lots of stadiums do it, it can be irritating, but at least we are getting more fan involvement. It will make it more “fun” and everyone will feel more involved in the game experience.

  60. Rich October 4, 2016 1:53 pm

#3 Combo of winning/more exciting offense. The read option is boring. Put in AZ and throw it!!!!

  61. hilorain October 4, 2016 1:57 pm

Easy to boost attendance….no PPV on Oahu.

  62. NotNasti October 4, 2016 2:03 pm

After each first down, a guy a few rows below us yells, “That’s another Hawaii . . . ” and we all yell “First Down!” There’s only about 10 – 20 of us that yell though. When we kick off, we all (10 – 20 of us) clap rhythmically and stamp our feet until the ball is kicked, and then we yell “Hit Somebody!” Would be nice if the whole stadium could do it.

  63. Buffoman October 4, 2016 2:06 pm

I don’t believe that you’re going to pry many of the PPV folks away from home a nd back to the stands. If they’ve had it for a few years, they’re probably in a routine and are comfortable.

Got to work on a new audience and if you’re looking to hook the students, you can’t look at old thing/promotions to entice them. Free busses is a good thing but there needs to be something more, something that they find selfishly their own, to engage them. The NFL figured out quickly that “old rockers” wouldn’t help build that young fan base they wanted (during the Super Bowl) so they wised up and switched to Bruno Mars, Lady B, and now Gaga.

To get the kids to ride the free buses and have them feel that their student’s activity fees are not a rip off, give them a pre-game activity (mini concert) that they would want. Alternative rock, hip hop, whatever. Would make the old folks tailgate a bit longer as they may see that as only noise but hey, you want more young people to rebuild the base, don’t plan for an old crowd.

I also believe that UH is missing something if they are not making free busses available from the CC campuses for those students and from West Oahu.

There is opportunity to get new fans in the stands. The game is better, but young people today are different. The stadium experience needs to change to accommodate that population if they want them to participate.

  64. Na Alii Pride October 4, 2016 2:16 pm

When UH football was drawing 35,000-40,000 regularly in the 80’s, games used to start at 7:00 or 7:30 p.m. There was no worry about the swap meet, or kids’ sports. I think people are so busy these days, that maybe a later start would help bring more fans to the game. When games start at 6:00, it’s not like you can do anything substantial after the game anyway.

Tailgating was a big deal, and there was time to prepare and get ready. Not sure if I’m in a minority, but is this something that the AD is considering?

  65. 3-Prong October 4, 2016 2:17 pm

#3. Winning and a keg = Students in seats

    …seriously (hehe)

  66. Mike96816 October 4, 2016 2:18 pm

Agree with #9 & 12 about inviting youth teams to home games. Fill empty seats and build future fan base.

  67. NotNasti October 4, 2016 2:21 pm

Buffo: pass on free admission to CC students? My nephew attends HCC, but lives in a UH Manoa Dorm. He does not get free admission to UH sporting events.

  68. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 4, 2016 2:21 pm

    1) Didn’t know we were supposed to dance.
    2) The haa is cool.
    3) Either pay people or keep winning.
(hint: one is easier to do than the other but it may be debatable as to which one that is.)

  69. Parkpill October 4, 2016 2:30 pm

Love the Ha’a done right before kickoff.

Winning will take care of the short term increase in attendance. Long term, I feel the athletic department should set aside a large amount of tickets in the upper north endzone to the various pop warner leagues throughout the state each game. Those seats are always empty. I can remember as a keiki, sitting up there every game and that planted the seed for me to bleed green and continue to support the team to this day!

  70. (Jesse)James October 4, 2016 2:39 pm

    Good afternoon Tsaikos….

    Hmmm…Good questions from the coach….

    #1…not a good dancer…LMAO

#2….Love the Ha’a being done exactly where it is….

#3…. Some good suggestions by everybody so far. Winning does bring the bandwagoners back…although back in the day, the stadium was always packed. Maybe work a deal with upper campus to allow students to get extra credit in class if they bring their ticket from the previous Saturday’s game (once they come, they might actually enjoy themselves and want to come back without the incentive); Have more PEP RALLY type events around upper campus during the week to get the students fired up….music, giveaways, etc.; I like the pre-game concert idea with local bands/musicians playing…the stadium already has a couple of stages inside near the concessions that can be used…people come, stay, eat, drink, etc.; the pop warner teams in the stands with their unis is also a good idea and they bring their families as well…that used to be done in the past; look at video of Kahuku fans at a game…they all know the routine, what to say, clapping at the right times etc. maybe something like that to get fans more involved in the game….or look at all the other power 5 schools with all their traditional cheers etc….like Arkansas…and SOOOOOEEEEE PIG….GOOOOOOOOOOOO IRISH……etc.

  71. Kapahulu October 4, 2016 2:43 pm

1.Why wasn’t the whole stadium up and dancing to Kapena’s ‘Masese’ in the fourth quarter.

    1. Sound system not too good in our area.

2.“Did you appreciate the ha‘a being done before kickoff?”

    2. Yes, more fans in the stand right before the game. We look forward to it.

3.What can we do to bring more fans to the game and make the game experience better.

    3. Have game sponsor’s sponsor dollar days on game nights.
Each home game have a different item on sale for one dollar.
Have the concession mark the ticket for only one purchase.
    example: for 6 home games………..
    1. Pepsi Night.
    2. Hot Dog Night.
    3. Spam Musubi Night.
    4. Pizza Night.
    5. Chili and Rice Night.
    6. Saimin Night.

    also,
The Orange End Zones look empty on TV. Fill them up.
Give away 100 tickets to each Military Branch (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard). North End Zone can be Alcohol Free Zone.

Select one or two High School teams for Yellow Zone free tickets each game.

Once they get used to a great game atmosphere experience, it may lead to future ticket purchases.

Over the years one of the main things that fans look forward to for UH Football Games was the Tailgates Parties with Family and Friends when the games used to start at 7:00pm and 7:30 pm.

It was moved up to help publicize th UH game results to people and media on the Mainland. With today’s social media, the results are almost instantly on the internet.

Moving the starting time for the games back to 7:00pm would allow more people (like me) who work on Saturday days to attend Tailgate Parties with Family and Friends.

Also, how about bringing back a former Warrior Player to be the new Team Mascot. This person and the crowd and players could relate well to each other.
I don’t know if he would do it, but I would like to suggest the next Warrior Team Mascot be Leonard Peters. I think he would make a perfect Warrior Mascot.
If not available, then open it up to former players and see what happens.

Bottom line, keep winning and the fans will find their way back.

    Go Bows!

  72. paki park October 4, 2016 2:44 pm

Coach Rolo, you’re doing an outstanding job. Keep grinding and the fans will come. Work on getting the student body to show up for games. When I attended UHawaii, I knew several of the athletes because I dormed and so did some of the football athletes. We would show up early for the games because we had to in order to get good seats. BTW, student section was next to the UHawaii Band on the sideline, in the orange, 40-50 yard line. We would watch the kickers warm up–watching Jason Elam warm up was well worth sitting in the hot sun. But we was always hoping Tom McCarthy (who dormed) would shank a punt. Sure enough once he shanked a punt over the bench, over the cheerleaders, and into the stands. If that punt went straight we figured it might have gone 80 yards. Tom did not disappoint. Even his shanked punt was good. Anyway, I had a question. I noticed the men’s bball team is having a fund raiser for their nutrition table. I know mid season football is not the time to run a fund raiser, but how can I donate money to the football nutrition table?

  73. dopaco24 October 4, 2016 2:45 pm

    1. I’d prefer C&K’s “Friends”. It’s one that people of all ages sing along to without even realizing it.
    2. I appreciated the Ha’a before Kickoff.
    3. Have UH take over operations from the Stadium Authority. By having full control on gamedays at Aloha stadium, UH can work on the price points of tickets, concessions, merchandise, and parking to ensure maximum attendance and revenue. I have always felt like UH and the Stadium Authority were competing entities. It gets even worse when UH is losing a lot or winning a lot.

  74. (Jesse)James October 4, 2016 2:49 pm

Also, during the off-season continue with community outreach stuff…

Tsaikos actually suggested stuff before like a sort of Eat the Street event/Taste of Hawaii/Honolulu event, on lower campus to benefit UH Athletics where people could eat/drink/meet coaches etc. but were told that couldn’t be done….

Solicit local bands to play at Andrews to promote UH Athletics as well as get students involved….

  75. Jose Dynamite October 4, 2016 2:49 pm

I heard Rolo on ESPN Radio asking for the fans to come out, and I made sure I did. The cheapest tickets were $29 per person. That’s $58 JUST for 2 people to show up. Not including any parking fees or consessions….and it seemed like it was only about half full. Maybe the statium could do a ticket sale promotion where all the yellow seats at the top are only $10. If anything you’ll sell more seats and with more body’s at the game, it makes it a better atmosphere, the sales at the consession will increase, perhaps people would be more willing to spend on UH Clothing at the game as well. If there’s more people at the game, it creates a greater energy for the team…and if the stadium begins to consistantly get filled, then it creates a demand for people wanting to be where the action it. It would also be great if they could do something to make a greater student section at the games. I’m sure Rolo’s focus is on the game plan and probably not so much on the promotional aspect, but if you see the hype of the pre-game that went into the Clemson v.s. Louisville game on TV this past weekend…it truely embodies the excitement of a College Football Game. Perhaps we need to create a production around the game atmosphere. What about a pre-game concert as well?

  76. (Jesse)James October 4, 2016 2:51 pm

And I agree with many on here saying the sound system is terrible….we were saying that 10 years ago….Acoustics in the stadium are bad to begin with, a terrible sound system makes it even worse….let people know how they can help with that…maybe a kickstarter campaign or something….

  77. Buffoman October 4, 2016 2:52 pm

Here’s a crazy idea on a promotion. Get Red Bull to sponsor a halftime “air marching band” contest amongst the CC’ s with them putting up a prize to the campus winning th e contest. There would need to be a minimum number of participants, say 70, to make up a marching band. They would pick and perform go any one song they choose and since they don’t play an instrument, it would all be choreographed movement and faking the playing, like air guitar. Set aside seats for the student body of the performing campus and provide buses. Part of the criteria for winning would be “fan support” how many students, faculty show up.

Red Bull would be asked to provide the prize to the winning campus, say $10,000 for student activities. They would also provide samples at the games. If Red Bull isn’t interested, ask the Mountain Dew folks or whoever’s going after that population of young people.

I saw where the graduating class from Kahuku did a flash mob thing. Really cool and stuff young people seem to like doing. This just gives the young people bigger stage and could bring a new kind of fun to an old half time show and possibly interest a new sponsor into supporting the students.

  78. Bryson October 4, 2016 2:53 pm

I really liked how they played We Will Rock You before the opening kickoff it’s something I think they should do on each kickoff

  79. Boya_jr October 4, 2016 2:53 pm

Former UH student here who attended same time Rolo was QB. I also threw the biggest house party in Hawaii in 2001.

To get the students back then:

    – Good tailgating social atmosphere with the students. So be easier on them in the parking lot. Remember the students boycotted in the last two years if Coach Mac.

    – Hot Chicks. Believe me, if the game on the field is not that interesting, can always look in the stands.

    – Win. I called it right after the Hawaii basketball OT win over Nevada last year. This team is going to be good. It took until conference play, but win and people will be there. Sad, but true. Took them a awhile. So, maybe make the schedule easier.

    – Dorms. Get them young. When the students are freshmen and sophomores, get them involved and capture their attention for UH athletics.

    – Student Athletes: get then out of lower campus and friends with the general student pop. Encourage say the business majors who are players to participate with the business clubs.

    – Community: keep doing what you are doing (Costco, helping out little old ladies). That how you rebuild grass roots support.

    – Televise: UH football games need to be available to a broad audience and saturate them. PPV can kiss my okole.

Mainland fan here. Figure out how your players families are going to watch the games. PPV is digging it’s own grave as it’s a war on the fan and program by not steaming to the mainland. Won’t end well the way this is going

  80. (Jesse)James October 4, 2016 2:56 pm

    Just a flashback to yesterday’s blog…here’s a clip of sunshine…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_goSMl1JKi0

  81. z October 4, 2016 2:58 pm

    1. I remember a long time ago at a game where I heard a little yelling at us to get up and cheer. One of the cheerleaders had come up to us in the stands to lead us in a cheer. I sat in the yellows at the time.

    2. To me it is a team thing.

    3. If fans could bring in their own food it might help.

  82. Boya_jr October 4, 2016 3:00 pm

Also, what night is the best night to go clubbing in Honolulu? The college student decision tree would be if on Friday, then Saturday no prob go game. If the best night to go clubs is Sat, then you might lose the hot chicks at the game because they be doing their makeup. Seriously.

That’s why Hobolulu (I mean Honolulu) needs a good Thursday night club scene which frees up Saturday. Oceans on Thursday was back in early 2000’s.

  83. warriorsanddolphins October 4, 2016 3:06 pm

Here is my 2 cents on how to make the atmosphere better at Aloha on game days.
    1. Have the band play different fight songs. Every year its the same thing. It gets real boring. Why is so hard to learn and play something new. Listen to Oregon’s band and that makes you excited.
    2. Have a real warrior mascot, like how Vili was and have the drum rollers out again. But it has to be someone loyal to the program. Not another Vili who would steer his kids to the mainland to play ball.
3.Let the outside tailgaters take 2 or more stalls for their tents. We have more than enough space. Let the kids throw footballs. I remember this during the Wagner area.
    4. Recruit more enforcers on the team. Ex. David Maeva, Mike Tresler, Nate Jackson, The Noga brothers. These guys were crazy and would lay the hat on you.

  84. BigFan October 4, 2016 3:11 pm

    1. Lots of reasons. Some of it is culture (not wanting to stand out, not cool, etc). Old folks say humbug. If crowds were bigger and lots of people doing it may inspire all to join in. Great to see the Pitt crowd participation.

    2. Ha’a before kickoff is great but make sure of penalty situation.

    3. Many good ideas that were mentioned that could be tried. Times change and maybe we should move the kickoff to 7p. I think it accommodated the old folks and young kids as the June Jones games were looong. We should target the folks in the mid-range who will bring more excitement to the games. It will be a step by step approach to marketing and right now we need to fill those empty seats. I like the youth team promo idea. I believe they do some of that for baseball and it seems to work.

  85. BigFan October 4, 2016 3:13 pm

We also need to figure out a way to create a family atmosphere if we do the youth team promos. I know it’s tough to ban alcohol (money talks) but maybe at least section the stadium to keep the hooligans away from families, lol.

  86. bowwatcher October 4, 2016 3:21 pm

For the Haa, the cheer leaders need to get involved with Cue cards to stands – much like the Rain Bow cheer. The Jumbotron should also be showing the e ku at same time audience should be yelling.

Second game experience already a lot better than the 1st game. Making progress.
What about giving a free trip to stadium for one game for one of the Pay 4 View customer. Up to 12 people with free van to game from home.

  87. Boya_jr October 4, 2016 3:25 pm

Homecoming is next week. At the Big Ten schools, even iolani, they have a tradition of burning something. The night before the game. Gets the alums to return to campus.

Students are prob different today then 10-15 years ago. I remember folklore of parties at UH before my time, but rules get stricter every year. My perception is the students these days generally speaking more work hard and less play hard. I don’t know, but that’s boring

  88. not Sean October 4, 2016 3:33 pm

    1. I was cheehooing with all the new folks sitting around me.

    2. Haa is always good. We’re Poly’s team, no?

    3. If you’re thinking PPV is killing attendance, then kill PPV. Have Curran do play by play for it. That’ll fill the stands…GARENS!!!

  89. WarriorMojo October 4, 2016 3:47 pm

Rolo, you are on the right track. It’ll just take time. Chow’s greatest sin wasn’t losing games. It was boring fans to death. People left in droves without looking back. Unfortunately, that is part of the “legacy” that you are going to have to overcome.

Remember, the stage for 2007 was set in 2006, and even then, we didn’t sell out the stadium in 2007 until the last three games. But then, BOOM, critical mass and EVERYBODY had to be on the bandwagon. There were LINES at Rainbowtique to buy t-shirts and stuff! That can all come back, but it’ll take some time. Keep pushing.

  90. (Jesse)James October 4, 2016 3:50 pm

Boya_Jr….tapping into that idea…Have a ladies night at the stadium for students….women get in for free (or half price)…and male students will follow….LOL

  91. (Jesse)James October 4, 2016 3:59 pm

    WarriorMojo…Long time no see….

#83….and even those last three games were not true sellouts….I think BOH had to purchase 1,000 tickets to make them sellouts…. 🙂

  92. Andrew October 4, 2016 4:04 pm

    1. A big chunk of the crowd is older and are not the type to get up and dance. Also the song is within a specific genre which may not be appealing generally to a wide range of people.

    2. Doing the Ha’a is great but a lot of the fans don’t come into the stadium until right before kickoff or even after kickoff so they don’t really see it.

    3. Unfortunately with the Hawaii fan base, the larger crowds will not come unless winning is on a consistent basis. We have some of the worst band wagon fans that will only show up if the team is winning. Even in the 2007 undefeated season, the stadium wasn’t filled until the last two games. Also I think improving the flow of traffic and logistics in that sense could help as well. People don’t wanna deal with the traffic and will forgo going to a game just because of that.

  93. Andrew October 4, 2016 4:07 pm

We already have fans that frown upon people standing and cheering, so hoping they get up and dance is not likely.

  94. Boya_jr October 4, 2016 4:08 pm

    Longer term

The rail will make going to the game easier once it’s running.

A mult purposed mixed use complex with sports bars and restaurants will provide more options. If there was a nightclub there, after the game, instant after party. Uber/Lyft make the ride home safer and cheaper than taxi. That’s a game changer since Honolulu is DUI-ville

  95. Boolakanaka October 4, 2016 4:14 pm

Push the game back an hour or so. And follow up with free bussing for all UH students. UH is pretty much a commuter school, but so is U of Houston and they have attacked that problem, and probably have some great best practices.

Oh, had dinner with John Ursua and his pops on Sunday with the rest of their Ohana. Such a nice polite kid, you would never believe the trouble his pop and I use to get into in Halawa.

  96. ai-eee-soos October 4, 2016 4:33 pm

Bussing of students from DORMS, and back.

If I remember, this service was available last year, and previous years – don’t they

    have this service now ?

  97. Manoa Mist October 4, 2016 4:37 pm

    1. Why no dancing? I only dance naked so the police wouldn’t allow it.
    2. Haʻa: we watch on PPV so didn’t see it. My opinion: dance the haʻa after you win. These dances are meant to intimidate your opponent. The NCAA won’t allow that, so you ain’t following the cultural reason for the dance anyway. You win: dance like there’s no tomorrow. You lose: shut it and go home.
    3. What can you do to bring more fans? Stop selling alcohol in the stadium. Make the games more family friendly. Have that blimp go around like at the Sheriff and pass out Korean bar gift certificates. Put in a kiss cam. Play Hawaii 5-0 more often. Set up a boxing ring so the dumb guys that go to the games looking for trouble can beef and we can watch – a toughman competition. Recruit some strippers to dance scantily clad with the Rainbow dancers. Have field goal kicking halftime competition. More than anything, win.
Congrats Rolo how refreshing it is to see good guys coaching UH again, not grumpy old men. Keep recruiting good guys with good hearts. Have good values. Good values – live aloha, play warrior, attract good people.
Final suggestion to attract fans: pass out 10,000 Rolos candy bars to the first 10,oo0 fans to enter the stadium. If we win, we eat ’em. If we lose, we throw them at the other team.

  98. kweezy77 October 4, 2016 4:38 pm

    1. The Masese thing is kinda corny. First off it’s a Fijian song, so not really culturally appropriate, and the lyrics loosely translate to mean I’m a disappointment while smoking tobacco and drinking kava. Hardly the image you want for your football team. I get it though, the song is catchy and has a good beat if the goal is to get the crowd up and dancing. Might I suggest “Warriors” by Ky-Mani Marley or “The Warriors” by The Gladiators, two songs that at least mention the team name and I think would do a good job of oumping up the team and the crowd.

    2. Love the Ha’a. Loved the Haka too but feel the Ha’a is something uniquely ours. Hoping it catches on with fans. E Ku!

    3. This one is easy. Win or at least put an exciting product on the field.

  99. JAkaka October 4, 2016 4:48 pm

We were dancing and absolutely appreciate the new music during the game. Thanks coach Rolo.

We need to get students in the stands. They bring the spirit. Too many of them stay in the parking lot after tailgating. Offer packages to families so it doesn’t cost a family of four $100+ just to get in without food, parking, etc. seems like the stadium demographic is kupuna who have had season tickets for years. We love our kupuna but we need to get kids in the seats.

  100. JAkaka October 4, 2016 4:51 pm

Also have people who hashtag their photos in the stadium to get their photos on the jumbo tron. Works so good at other stadiums and gets a fan base to promote the games through their social media. Everyone loves to get their pic on the big screen but it’s only the people that sit in the front. This way you will get pictures from all over the stadium. Love the Chee hoo cam, very cute.

#72, I like the way you are thinking 🙂

For selfish reasons for us mainlanders, a Hawaiian air RT weekend turnaround including 2 football tickets, for dirt cheap, like $200. I get place to stay with my folks but cost of airfare costs too much.

  102. Tofuzuke October 4, 2016 5:09 pm

The stadium is NOT fan friendly! Whats wrong w/beach balls bouncing in the seats? Fans just having fun!! This past week after the first score a fan hung a Hawaiian flag, AWESOME, PRIDE ROCK! Three ushers all acted like there was a fire, pointing to the upper level to take it down, why? Water, $3.00 u kidding me?

  103. Hilo-Warrior October 4, 2016 5:44 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos,

Coach awesome game last week. I appreciated and I think most of us here appreciated the way the guys made a huge turn around against Nevada. Offense we knew what we could expect. But the defense surprised me with their will to play as hard as they could for their teammates and not give up. But I thought special teams made the biggest turn around outside of the return before the half.

But when the San Antonio Talons were playing they had a concert a couple times a season. Those nights were always sold out. Probably wont be able to happen this year. But maybe next season with home coming or senior night have some local bands play on the field after the game.

  104. Postmanke October 4, 2016 5:45 pm

    > “What can we do to bring more fans to the game and make the game experience better?”

God bless you Coach Rolo! This is something the athletic director and his marketing staff should be asking and figuring out. Your full attention should be on graduating your athletes and making the program great again by flat out winning while being in compliance. You trying to tackle and address these athletic dept issues head on shows what a great choice UH made choosing you to turn around the program. Id rather you be watching SJSU tape of the beating we took on defense and figuring out a game plan to whoop their a** next week. You have no time for this crap. But since you asked.. 🙂

    For you:
    1) Just win – you win this game watch the attendance go up. Win the next game and watch it go up even more. Its that simple. =)

For Athletic Director and Assistant Athletic Director
    * Read your Job Responsibilities over again.
*Market Market Market and Promote Promote Promote
looking at UH Athletic site and Corporate Sponsors, pathetic! Sorry, you guys are not going after it. outsource it if you can’t get it done. You guys are costing us money! We need more sponsors like Coca Cola Under Armor go get them. there should be another level above Diamond Sponsors. When you lock in a sponsors find a way to have them get more involved with promotions to make the game experience a win win for everyone.
    * Figure out a plan for stadium experience to be more Fan-centric. some of the things I’ve seen in other stadiums is listed wait times for food, restrooms, etc.. Online food ordering in certain premium sections and charge more for those seats.
*Wifi the crap out of the stadium and have Cisco pay for it. let them pay for the monitors and put it all over the stadium. If not, get AT&T. Get the fans connected and run social media promotions during the game. There is a way for passionate fans to engage and share their experience in real time at the stadium as it happens live on Twitter, Facebook etc.. get with it, that kind of promotion is priceless!
    * Whoever is running the social media is doing a good job promoting the athletes. I would try and do more to get more fans involved, get social with them and engage. Also, what a great way to promote your sponsors. Do it every day and watch the “follows” and engagement go up. having 10 retweets on a post is ridiculously bad. You can do better. get social and interact with your fans.
*Get with the Community – How about you guys figure some kind of drive like Hunger Drive. Huge homeless problem. Here is your chance to help together with a sponsor and the community. I’ll even hash tag it for you #WeCan! Have a canned food drive to all the remaining home games. Go get a sponsor for that, I’m sure they will help you run it. What a great way to get the community involve + add fans to stadium + help homeless. Media blitz this now, only few more home games left.

The stadium stuff I’m sure the AD has no control but there is lots of things they can do, LOTS! When June Jones quit every one was complaining about the $$ and whining about losing Nike. I said in here the day JJ quit screw it, get Under Armour and raise money at the stadium by finding a sponsor like Hawaiian Airlines and name it Hawaiian Air Field. AND look what happen. Good news is they listen. AD and Assistant AD do your job. I want to see more promotion from your dept. Start with social media if no budget for it. no excuses, get creative or we all going lose.

Good job Coach Rolo. You doing good. Win and keep the program clean!

  105. Hilo-Warrior October 4, 2016 5:49 pm

Oh also. I honestly believe Oceanic has it backwards. Being in San Antonio us transplant fans should not be blocked from the game. The live stream should be accessible to the parents of mainland and intl players and the Hawaii fans abroad.

Oceanic should blackout on Oahu until a set amount of tickets are sold and then open it back up to the ppv guys. Probably wont happen but it should go down that way.

  106. Ipu Man October 4, 2016 5:57 pm

    Pray…

  107. Markazulu October 4, 2016 6:36 pm

-I think the ha’a was done at the right time.
    – the simple answer is to keep winning… and if u guys keep playing to win instead of playing not to lose
-A few things that could be addressed to help the attendance ppv, marketing/advertising, traffic/parking, atmosphere at the stadium (concession, security)
    – find a way to connect to the students at UH manoa or even west oahu (shuttle buses, discounts)
    – all the things u do in the community will come back to u it just takes time. Hopefully u guys can do a family deal especially for the kids heck maybe even look into doing something with the armed forces in mind.

  108. Na Koa Mike October 4, 2016 6:56 pm

Photos of the Nevada game are now posted on the Na Koa website:

  109. cocobean October 4, 2016 6:59 pm

Coach, a ? for you. What’s the possibility of adding 30 to 60 minutes to your call the coach show. Sixty minutes isn’t enough to satisfy the interest your show generates. Maybe a longer show will motivate listeners who don’t attend games to actually but a ticket and show up.

  110. cocobean October 4, 2016 7:08 pm

#98. should be buy a ticket.

  111. A-House October 4, 2016 7:09 pm

    Coach Rolo:

place your 3 questions in the Kaleo and see what response you get from the student body – i would be surprised if you receive even 30 comments — that’s how much apathy exists

place the same 3 questions in the Star-Advertiser and see how the general public responds

these 2 will answer show how much either really thinks about your team.

don’t be disappointed in the lack of response – gives you a good base to work with — may even cause you to wonder why you ever came back

  112. cocobean October 4, 2016 7:17 pm

I second the suggestions in 100.

  113. HawaiiMongoose October 4, 2016 7:28 pm

    > “Why wasn’t the whole stadium up and dancing to Kapena’s ‘Masese’ in the fourth quarter?”
Didn’t even know it was playing. Was still focused on the game, believe it or not.

    > “Did you appreciate the ha‘a being done before kickoff?”
Absolutely. It would have been even better if the players had been facing the mauka stands. Direct eye contact with fans in closer proximity would have created a stronger reaction and more energy in the crowd. If the goal is to have the fans join in during certain points of the chant that’s the way to go. (And if it means Oceanic has to cover the ha‘a with a sideline camera, no big deal, it’s not as if the PPV fans are the main target audience.)

    > “What can we do to bring more fans to the game and make the game experience better?”
Make Aloha Stadium the place to be on Saturday nights for kids and their families. That means:
    – converting an entire end zone section to a designated family-friendly zone where alcohol is not served or permitted;
    – lowering ticket prices in that section for kids under 12 to $1 and under 18 to $5;
    – starting the games at 7:00 p.m. so there’s time to finish all of the Saturday kid activities and get the family fed and dressed up in their UH gear before heading to the stadium;
    – finding a way to make parking easier for families with kids (I don’t know how to do it, but it would help);
    – setting up a process that allows kids/parents to take selfies of themselves and their families during the game and email them to a “Live at Aloha Stadium!” mailbox where someone will sort through them as they arrive and pick out the best ones to post on the stadium jumbotron during timeouts;
    – bringing back the beach ball (with a big UH Warrior logo on it!); and
    – sending players out to elementary and especially middle schools during the off-season to give talks about teamwork, preparation for success, the importance of doing well in school, and how much of difference kids can make by showing up to games in person to support their hometown heroes!

  114. kev-1 October 4, 2016 8:27 pm

Coach, here’s a mascot thought. Google “Big G Harlem globetrotters ” for inspiration.

  115. Candy October 4, 2016 8:29 pm

The music on the public address system before the games is terrible. Perhaps I am too old to appreciate what is now called music?

  116. Bryan October 4, 2016 8:32 pm

More local star player will bring more fans because they have a huge network of friends and family.

Kahuku Red Raider nation brought thousands to see their high school football team play Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas. Their fans travel well and are hard core and dedicated. Need to get them to transfer the same fanaticism to UH. It starts will getting more Kahuku players.

  117. Bryan October 4, 2016 8:34 pm

Another suggestion is to improve the food experience by bringing in food trucks and merging an event like “eat the street”, or “taste of Hawaii.”

  118. H-Man October 4, 2016 8:55 pm

Re busing students. Ai-eee-soos #88 is right. Free student busing to the games at Aloha Stadium was provided the past couple of years, but few students took advantage of it. I thought (memory fading) Ka Leo did a survey a few years ago and the student response was pathetic. Many said they didn’t have the time to waste on a football game because of their study workload. Others said the team was not fun watching; they rather go out. I presume they meant clubbing or something like that. But I did notice a small-large student crowd at the east corner of the stadium nearest to the freeway. Maybe 2-300 or so students (I think they were UH students) tailgating. It’s a start. Student attendance will increase as the team returns to being competitive.

  119. John October 4, 2016 8:56 pm

My whole section was dancing to masese. I loved it.

  120. Bryan October 4, 2016 9:00 pm

They need to extend the rail to Waikiki and UH. That will help make it easier for students and tourists to attend the games.

  121. Aaron October 4, 2016 9:02 pm

the reason no one is dancing is because the student turnout is so poor right now. Chow scared them away, but it could get better with some work.

those of you who criticize the older fans for not doing this or not doing that… don’t bash anyone that buys tickets, especially right now. if they want to sit and watch, so be it.

  122. Bryan October 4, 2016 9:09 pm

Not saying rail was a good idea, but if they were going to do it, they needed to start from UH, Waikiki, Ala Moana, Downtown, Airport, and Stadium.

Start with the high density areas where people might use it, and then if it works well, they can extend further out.

Doesn’t make sense they started building it out in Kapolei and run out of money before even getting into town. They are stuck. Whose going to use it now?

If they started in the core of town in the high density areas first, at least people could start using it, and the distance would be shorter. If it didn’t work out, they could stop and not extend it further.

  124. justsomeguy October 4, 2016 9:33 pm

    Hey Coach,

As a fan, I will ALWAYS appreciate the Ha’a before games. Sadly I live on the east coast, otherwise I would be at every game. It’s unfortunate that so many of the students are “fair-weather” fans as they say.

I think the extended media presence is a HUGE step up from the previous regime Coach, I applaud you for that and whoever is in charge of the videos coming out of UH Football. Ways to connect to players, and who they are, what they’re up to off the field, I think these things strengthen fans investment in a team. Social media is obviously the pathway for this.

I’m sure I’m saying things you already know, but just wanted to let you know I notice…..we notice. Thank you for leading our young men. Aloha.

  125. WarriorNY October 4, 2016 9:51 pm

    > “What can we do to bring more fans to the game and make the game experience better?”

CROWD HA’A from the Student Section. Reserve a certain portion of the student section that is strictly for Ha’a. Perhaps, before the game to join the team and again at the end of the 3rd Q, like “Jump Around” at Wisconsin. Kids in the general crowd can join in as well.

That could be a really fun way of bringing some fun into actually attending the game… Wait, are they doing that already? I heard something about crowd participation during the ha’a.

I wouldn’t know because we on the mainland can never see inside of Aloha Stadium! (I know I’m beating a dead horse)

  126. Not an Expert October 4, 2016 9:58 pm

Winning will bring immediate increases to the games. Losing will do the vice-versa.

Having faithful fans is the key to the long term success of the program. Win or lose you will need a faithful backing of these loyals.

The long term success as many mentioned, is having families being able to attend the games at reasonable prices. The long term effect is to have the keikis become long term fans. Like any good organization needing reproduction of their product, from floral farms, to food and animal farms, etc., children the key to regeneration of becoming fans for life. That is how me and my siblings became long time season holders.

Do the same with the youth football leagues. They will also become loyal fans and more may want to stay home and play for the Warriors.

I remember the days the students section were right behind the players. The energy they bring when in numbers transcends to the players. Knew many who would use student tickets to bring in others to attend. Need to have your students be promoters of bringing people to the games. Every eligible student eligible to attend for free can bring in another 1 to 3 people, who are not students. These tickets must be purchased at the university at a nominal fee. People say they are a commuter school so take advantage of the local students who have friends who do not go to UH.

Fans who want to stand and get crazy, usually the younger ones. Must excuse the elders because as the human age, standing for long period of time become problematic, screaming becomes problematic, etc. Reconfigure an area behind the opposing team by taking the seats away. Have it a flat area which is recessed lower than the seats around it, with smaller ledges about 6 inches higher than the next. Thus these people will not block the view of those sitting and have the view like if they were seated only they are now standing.

Yes, and start the game at a later time allowing many who work on Saturdays to get to the game. 7:05 pm should help. Have the airlines reconfigure flying out an hour later.

  127. burro sabio October 4, 2016 10:00 pm

#100, #101 – we want Rolo to wonder why he came back?

  128. David October 4, 2016 10:04 pm

1-Is this question only relevant when winning? No relevance.
2-This is a tradition passed from high school to UH. I prefer the humble and focus approach. Pumps the crowd up, but is it good usage of emotion and energy? No need sideline show. Just play and kick ass!
3-We can’t have the best of both worlds. If we want big crowd? Cancel PPV on Oahu. Stick to the old ways. Once established, reintroduce PPV to further profit.
4-My question?? If the crowd shows, what are the plans to keep them coming?

  129. I Believe October 4, 2016 10:17 pm

Aloha All – wonderful to “I Believe” again…
    Great Comments — all — even those I didn’t, necessarily agree with…
Coach – Great Job! Love the Ha’a! Love YOU and your spirit, commitment, and dedication! Love the show! SO GLAD you are here and praying for you, staff, and OUR TEAM! #PrideRock #PlayWarrior
Agree with what others said re: continuity when having a “regular” dance (AND -SONG – for that matter).
GOTTA BE REGULAR – meaning should be used at every game – more than ONCE every game! Think ‘gators; Think Sweet Caroline – so many examples one could give.
We, as fans, WANT that – HAVE wanted that – even those of us from neighbor islands watching at home – we WILL participate from home – but we sojourn over for at least one game a season…and would LOVE to participate IRL!
Which brings me to last request : PLZ try make it easier for neighbor island fans – SO appreciate you coming over here, but…SteveM spoke (a while ago) of neighbor island pkg deals from before time. I tweeted you about this at Pigskin time – maybe get corporate sponsors for an entire pkg or just hotel, or just car rental, or just airfare – having ANY of those NOT be an expense would make me come over for more than ONE game – and I promise you, while I’m NOT Rubberman calibre, I WOULD most certainly be dancing at seat, AND in aisles (unless as was reported earlier, the ushers tell me to sit down! THAT practice, if happening, needs to immediately be addressed – and stopped – and I’m over 50!)
Finally, totally unrelated to your Qs (and I think it’s SO great you are reaching out – keep it up!), but…many fans who know what is going on at and with Aloha Stadium and UH are DISGUSTED with the contractual arrangements (beyond poorly and beyond inexcusably) made / negotiated in the past! UH DESERVES A BIGGER CUT. Plain and Simple! UH DESERVES CONCESSION MONEY. Plain and Simple. Perhaps YOU can arrange – or GET SOMEONE to arrange – ONE concession where proceeds GO TO UH. I, for one, would ONLY BUY from THAT concession – and I would encourage others to do the same, verbally and via social media. It is unbelievable to us how long this situation has been going on!
Then, once you are able to FINALLY and EQUITABLY address that, move on to Rainbowtique and licensing deals (ALSO beyond poorly and beyond inexcusably negotiated). Bring back retro – they always seem to go over BIG – ASK US what we WILL BUY! I already bought my 3-year-old mo’opuna a shirt for Christmas! Perhaps Na Koa should start producing shirts – ANYTHING which is going to result in UH Athletics – and specific teams – getting $. You want to talk about the UH Athletics deficit?!? Mahalo!

  130. I Believe October 4, 2016 10:28 pm

AND what the heck happened with “We Get ‘Em Hawaii”?!? I immediately donated and contacted them to ask if I could get Kaua’i companies involved. I had gotten three companies on Kauai who wanted to participate – no follow up. I stopped asking companies. They asked me to arrange for people for a radio interview – I did – with the parents of current players at UH in sports and – with former UH players living here – then nothing. Because I talked about it ALL the time, and even carried the box of buttons they sent me for promo purposes, which I was religiously giving out, I met someone from Big Island also interested…forwarded info and again no follow up.
Haven’t checked their web site for a while…is it still up? It was SUCH a good idea – bypass bureaucracy – support the KIDS – OUR KIDS – and the TEAMS they play on! Are they still accepting donations? How much money was raised? Hiw much given to UH teams? Which teams?
I KNOW they are also fans – and tremendous supporters – and are all volunteering their time, AND I thank them for their efforts, but…

  131. I Believe October 4, 2016 10:33 pm

Why “Comment Awaiting Moderation” when I formerly posted AND am a paid subscriber ?!? hmmmmm….Although admit you haven’t heard from me in a long time and the two comments WERE lengthy…e kala mai (but GOOD to be back – waving hello in the Clubhouse – won’t jump on beds!)

  132. Bryan October 4, 2016 10:39 pm

Ha’a was good. The PA system is horrible. Time to change him out and put somebody in there with more energy. Time for some change in getting the stands pumped up during timeouts/ commercials. Play more up to date music. Get the band in opposite sides of the stadium to create more noise. Provide us with clappers. Let us throw streamers. Let us throw confetti. Bring the beach balls back in the stand.

But the number 1 thing is we need to change out the PA system with less of that boring talk and more music

  133. JD October 4, 2016 10:41 pm

Bring back the Warrior Walk before the game for the diehards that come early no matter how we play

  134. cocobean October 4, 2016 10:44 pm

#112. I liked the ideas #100 posted. It was something original. Just about every answer to ? #3 I’ve heard before. The topic of increasing attendance overall and increasing student interest has been discussed here many times. #100 posted an idea I’ve never read here before.

  135. Jon October 4, 2016 11:36 pm

    *I suck at dancing

    *yes

*be in games against the best teams on the schedule and occasionally win those games. Just win and be bowl eligible most years

  136. Maukamom October 5, 2016 12:59 am

    Aloha!
I’m a long time lurker, first time poster. But, I’ve been attending UH games regularly with my family for about 40 years. So, I do have some opinions.
    Thank you, Coach Rolo:
    1. Sorry I could not dance – my 4-yr old fell asleep on my lap.
    2. Definitely enjoyed the ha’a. Before the kickoff allowed more people to enjoy it, although we were sitting down from about 5:30.
    3. I was just thinking that perhaps having the games earlier, in the afternoon (like the Boise game), would allow more families to attend. I’ve heard from many people that it ends too late for them to take their kids, so they just don’t go. Only diehards like us will go whenever. Winning will help, too.
    Mahalo!

  137. z October 5, 2016 1:37 am

    3. I don’t know why coach has to ask this question. To me it not Rolos job to worry about this. His job is to get wins. Seems like someone is not doing their job? Not doing it well enough? Ran out of ideas? Have no clue? I don’t know. I think coach should not have to worry about this. He has enough to do.

  138. hitmanhart October 5, 2016 1:47 am

    3. What can you do to bring more fans? bust out the fancam !! kissing cam !! do the wave to the song surf !! have a tail gate party cook off contest every home game

  139. Maddog50 October 5, 2016 2:26 am

    Maybe-
Contact all former season ticket holder special rate with last 4 games-they commit sort of to renew next year-

All corporate sponsors with large employee base a family nite deal

    First responders night family driven

Students get in free-how bout bring a friend special deal or bring the family deal

It is total nonsense study load is reason for lack of student support unless UH is so different from most other schools during FB season

Could have a town by town blitz starting with communities closest to stadium with special pricing using high schools as launch point-

  140. Maddog50 October 5, 2016 2:32 am

Winning exciting FB will drive attendance upward. It took a great effort to drive this down-

By the way the new UHFB website, Na Koa website are greatly improved and in most cases equal to or better than many mid-major sites I think they are great and underutilized.

Coach you are doing a lot of the right things keep doing them ! Like I always said get on the bus or get out of the way!!!

  141. SlippaRippa October 5, 2016 3:25 am

We NEED a more football-intelligent crowd (i.e. being quiet when we have the ball, making noise when the other team is on 3rd or 4th down, etc.). This starts with a competent video board operator who knows when to put up graphics or videos encouraging the crowd in crucial situations.

Back in the day, when the scoreboard was just black and white, there were well-timed graphics showing when to make noise and when to be quiet, or even when to yell, “first down!”, and it seemed the operator at the time knew when each was appropriate.

At the last game I noticed a graphic to make noise, but that hasn’t been consistent the past few years. To improve this, I suggest we record players telling the crowd what to do and play it when needed. For inspiration watch the Uptown Funk dance video in the locker room from last year starring RJ Hollis. Maybe there could be two versions of each video, a longer and shorter one. Play the first one the first time it’s needed during the game with the player explaining something like, “We have the ball on offense, shhhhhhhhh.” Later in the game the shorter version could be played with just that player saying, “Shhhhhhhhh.” Of course you could substitute coaches or local celebrities instead of the players if you wanted.

  142. SlippaRippa October 5, 2016 3:34 am

I like the idea to sell half-priced tickets after halftime. There are people drinking in the parking lot all game, and if it’s a close game and the crowd is getting loud it might get those guys in the stadium. Even though we ultimately want a full stadium for the entire game, having these guys contribute to the noise level in critical situations might be enough to put the boys over the top to pull out the win.

Homefield advantage is a reciprocal thing…the more fans cheering, the more we pump up the players, the team wins. The team wins, and more of us show up to cheer. And the circle continues…

  143. SlippaRippa October 5, 2016 3:46 am

I’m not a fan of PPV as it has seriously killed the crowd over the years (as have other things), but a lot of people like it so I guess it’s here to stay. For those who want to do away with it completely, maybe UH could run a pilot program for one season where there is PPV for games where the crowd is expected to be large, but no PPV for games where the crowd is expected to be smaller, or vice versa. That way we could find out if PPV really diminishes the in-stadium crowd without alienating the PPV fans, and maybe more people would show up to the stadium if they couldn’t watch it any other way.

Another idea could be to simply increase the price of PPV so much that it would be equally or more financially prudent to buy tickets for a whole family to watch the game in person. This way we don’t eliminate PPV for those who cannot attend but encourage those who can to show up to support.

  144. Bryan October 5, 2016 4:39 am

Where’s all the long comments I wrote last night? All are missing now! 🙁

  145. w October 5, 2016 6:12 am

winning will bring back the fans Coach…What got the fans excited when JJ was there was the high flying offense, the feeling we could score on any play and a hard hitting defense ( i remember ESPN in 2005-06 commenting that Hawaii’s defense was the hardest hitting defense in the nation)..

Also I agree with #72, not much I can do in coming to the games (live in Georgia) but not being able to see the games on the mainland is EXTREMELY frustrating, loved staying up for a midnight kickoff for my warriors…..I dont know how much you have to do with getting this fixed but any pressure on the yahoos that do would be greatly appreciated.

    Great job coach

  146. Faithful Fan October 5, 2016 6:47 am

    1. Not sure why no one danced, but there were tons of people Cheeeeee Hoooooing! Maybe the announcer has to make that part of the intro

    2. The Ha’a before kick of was full of MANA, facing the visiting team was EPIC, reminded me of how Kahuku High School did it last year in the stadium. The Ha’a should always face the opponent.

    3. A) Cut down the commercials, I could easily watch the game at home, the
    commercials are a bit much.
    B) Let the band play because it adds to the college football atmosphere and the
    UH band rocks.
    C) Create a song that the UH band can play to get the fans involved
    D) Expand family seating with no alcohol
    E) Really miss the WARRIOR Walk
    F) Keep doing what you are doing as a coach, keep the players connected to the
    community.
    G) Keep winning

Just my 1.2 cents GO WARRIORS

  147. Maddog50 October 5, 2016 7:42 am

Crazy idea-play the name game-if your name is Stephen or Brandy call the ticket office and get X number of tickets for X. Could promote on line radio and TV-hey just a crazy thought. I would set a goal to incrementally increase over time-learned in business “hope is not a plan and everything is a process”

I agree PPV cuts into attendance greatly. Why go to the stadium, find parking (not that there is a problem currently) and drive home if you can get a bunch of your friends together for $60 a game and watch at home. Or you can also go to local bars or movie theaters to watch for free or small price (Theaters charges $12 per game).
Need to black out or delay local PPV if attendance does not reach 40,000. Most NFL or college teams have black out on local TV if the games are not sold out. Oceanic can find a way to black out Oahu and not the other islands.
For the students – Poll them and find out what would get them to the games. It’s hard since the stadium is far from campus. Get them involved with the game experience like a lot of other schools do. Make them the 12th Man and get them involved. Have the students get involved in making motivational videos or music to play during the games. They know what pumps them up.
We also need a unique mascot and team entrance into the stadium. Look on youtube at what other schools do when the team enters the stadium or takes the field.
This is Hawaii Football, there is no other college like us. We need to make our opponents understand this when they play here.

    1. They play Masese, but at the same time put a ridiculous “Chee Hoo Cam” on the screen. How can you have a “Chee Hoo Cam”? Chee hoo is a sound, not a visual. You want people to get up and dance during Masese? Put up a “Dance Cam” or “Slap Dance Cam”. The video board has to complement the music.

    2. Ha’a is always appreciated, as long as it’s performed with energy, fervor and committment by all.

    3. $$$$$$. Obviously, not a whole lot of fans committed to season tickets. And not many more are going to pay a minimum of $29 per seat for anything but the north end zone. Simple supply and demand. At the current tickets prices, you’ll only see a small incremental bump in attendance with each win. Want to see more okoles in seats? Better ticket deals for sidelines and south end zone. Seeing UH play live isn’t worth it for a lot of families, when you’re talking more than $100 for a family of four (not including food). North end zone is a non-starter for ticket deals. Who wants to not be able to see the video board without turning around each time?

Agreed. The chee hoo cam makes no sense. Chee hoo-ing is not visual. Like you said it should be some type of “dance” cam instead.

I have some physical disabilities so I am unable to dance too much, besides I am really bad at it, you want people in the stands, Right?

    Love the Ha’a.

I live on the mainland, I go to as many road game s as I can. Put Matt Norman #72 in, and please get the powers at be to straighten out the game streaming on the internet.

Thanks coach, great job! We believe in you!

  152. MauiWarrior October 5, 2016 8:46 am

I fly in for games. Great job coach.
To get fans – the stadium officials need to make it as easy as possible. Make sure parking is available; traffic minimized; tailgating; and, better food and service. I was in a concession line for awhile and nearly missed a kickoff because there was ONE person at the register (though two or three registers available). Why not get a contract with L&Ls or Graces etc. to sell plate lunches.

But GREAT to see Gaylord. And Nate Jackson, Nasty Nate, Lelie, Leonard Peters, etc.

3 things that Norm Chow left that I can respect is recruiting bigger/taller athletes, making the facilities a lot nicer and making the players memorize the alma mater song.

“place your 3 questions in the Kaleo and see what response you get from the student body – i would be surprised if you receive even 30 comments — that’s how much apathy exists”

Student apathy and cost will always be a major factor. There are too few diehard fans that go to every home game. Those that want the stadium filled will argue why can’t everyone just support the program. Those that see Hawaii Rainbow Warrior football as just entertainment and can live with or without Hawaii Rainbow Warrior football. There are other things we can do. It isn’t good or bad. That’s just the way it is. I will continue to watch UH football on PPV when time permits because they will continue to have it. You can’t beat the cost!

Seriously, do people expect fans to flock to Aloha Stadium after one conference win? String together 3 conference wins (Nevada, SJSU, UNLV) and if fans don’t clamor to get tickets for the New Mexico game (a winnable game), then there is a problem. One problem for sure that affects attendance is the limited public parking available at Aloha Stadium. I would guess 40% of total parking is designated PUBLIC parking zones; see map https://alohastadium.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Parking-Map-Layers_2016SA.pdf

  157. Manu October 5, 2016 9:17 am

Change the song. Why are we playing a Tongan song? Get something from Sudden Rush or Willie K if you want the fans to start jumping.

The Ha`a is cool and unique to UH (although other Pac-12 schools are doing it now).

If you want fans to come back, continue to improve and be competitive. You’re not going to win every game but you can be competitive. Be unpredictable in your play calling, teach your players to be disciplined. Lastly, have fun!!!

  158. Manu October 5, 2016 9:23 am

Oh yeah, win more than one game in a row. String some together so people won’t think it’s a fluke.

  159. madeinhawaii October 5, 2016 9:48 am

Keep working on creating a family atmosphere at the stadium.

Maybe set up pregame booths with games of the kids, manned by the scout team members and dancers? Can they set up one of those keiki trains to go around the stadium before the game for early arrivers with kids? $5 a ride? Some kind of pregame carnival like atmosphere for the keikis would hook the future fans forever. Or, how about those little rides where kids get on and push up and down to make the little vehicles move around?

The more articles that are written about the Warriors the better. Kaleo, UH Athletic websites.. Midweek, Star-Advertiser… HawaiiNewsNow, KHON, NaKoa, twitter, facebook, etc.. get word out about anything everything surrounding Warrior football. It’s all good. Feed the fans’ thirst for information and they stay glued to the team.

    1. I don’t live in Hawaii, but I definitely think picking another song that maybe has more upbeat or bass bumping would get people out of their seats or jacked for the 4th quarter.

    2. Ha’a is always awesome. It signifies unity and gets the players and crowd pumped for the game. Maybe to get fans in earlier, have a Vili-style drum beat 1 hour before the game, kind of like how the 49ers do the fog horn to let the crowd know it’s 1 hour before kickoff. Went to a few games at the Stick and once that went off, people started to clean up their tailgates and went in.

    3. I think the idea of having theme nights or family nights are a great idea, have a collectable that the first 2 or 3,000 can get. I agree with one of the earlier posts letting kids come for free is a great idea and builds the young fan base. People in Hawaii are already paying out of their ears for that crapshow of a rail, a discounted package price would probably entice more people to come to the games.

Agree with #130. I am a Hawaii fan living in SEC country. Out here it is all about the local football team practically 24/7 by all media outlets, TV, radio, social media, newspapers etc. The fans can’t get enough…and it shows in game attendance
