Wed: Spieler NCAA Woman of the Year semifinalist

Just announced

Former UH beach volleyball All-American Katie Spieler is among the 30 semifinalists for NCAA Woman of the Year.

A record 517 school nominees were submitted this year, which was whittled down to 142 conference nominees. The committee selected 30 women from that pool – 10 from each of the three NCAA divisions, who represent 13 sports and a host of diverse majors.

Spieler finished her career with a program-best 102 career victories and was the recipient of the beach volleyball NCAA Elite 90 Award. Spieler earned UH’s Jack Bonham Award, presented to the school’s top senior female student-athlete, and was part of the Big West’s Pairs Team of the Year along with then-freshman Emily Maglio.

The NCAA will salute the achievements and accomplishments of all Top 30 honorees and announce the 2016 Woman of the Year at an awards dinner Sunday, October 16, at the Westin Indianapolis. In determining the Woman of the Year winner, the selection committee will name nine finalists – three women from each division – in late September.

a friend of mine gave me this idea, any of you volleyball fans who see this blog want to consider ditch the OLD ‘fans’ habits in stan sheriff center and perhaps yell BOOM when the jump/spin servers serve? especially when noreen serves since its most accurate and therefore deadly. you know just to intimidate the opponent especially u-dub coming into town?

it just adds a psychological factor, but i agree that many are old in the arena and even fell asleep during the match! so they need to wake up and get their moneys worth as well as keep na wahine pumped.

too bad nobody can suggest to na wahine to like bounce around when initially on ball receive (until actually served) like ‘ready for a fight’ just like brazils talita antunes did during the rio beach bronze match looking all fierce to create anxiety for kerri walsh jennings and april ross during their near defeat in set 2.

  2. BeanS September 7, 2016 12:34 pm

I agree and have always thought and tried to get people around us in the stands to do the same but with no success. We need more then just “lets go bows” We need some rumble or some chants.. Sadly most of these fans give you that look lol like you’re not supposed to do that.

  3. haleiwacrossfitter September 7, 2016 12:39 pm

#1. Is your friend’s name Steve or Laura? Or perhaps even BeanS?

  4. Rabbit ears September 7, 2016 2:43 pm

Agree a lot of the fan base are elderly. But they are the best and most loyal, win or lose.

  5. blunite September 7, 2016 2:43 pm

    @1
Does that comply with the sportsmanship code of UH and the BW? Most codes encourage and promote good sportsmanship by student-athletes, coaches and spectators. Moreover, support should be provided to the participants and officials in a positive manner.

Hawaii is noted for its knowledgeable fans and appreciation for good play. Does that include courtesy to opposing teams? I don’t know.

  6. warriorwahine September 7, 2016 2:48 pm

    2. indeed. that ‘lets go bows’ is not as sufficient anymore and apparently fans are falling asleep as well as na wahine are becoming numb to it. they yell BOOM for jump/spin servers in the pac 12 and u-dub is no exception. im sure other conferences especially the power 5 are like the same.

tired of that excuse that the fans/crowd in the ssc is old and there was a guy who was sitting in front of me fell asleep! im was like why he bothered to spend his money and come? supporting na wahine great, but falling asleep on na wahine is not. i dont care if you are physically old, im old, you came to be spiritually younger at least.

  7. warriorwahine September 7, 2016 2:52 pm

    5. i dont mean be unsportsmanlike.

is there supposed be something wrong with the crowd yelling BOOM (upon the smack of the ball) when lets say nikki or tayler serves?

  8. hollycow September 7, 2016 3:06 pm

    oh boy…….

  9. blunite September 7, 2016 3:08 pm

Anyone know if the rule changes included the game balls used? According to the NCAA 2016 – 2017 rulebook 3 balls will be provided by the host site: 2 white and 1 blue and white. (page 96, Rule 3, The Ball)

Far as I know all our balls are green and white. I don’t even want to know about the required uniformity in color, circumference, weight, pressure and manufacturer.
Could a team contest a match if the balls were under inflated?? Whose job is it to check the pressure of the balls????

  10. tako September 7, 2016 3:17 pm

If you like go “Boom,” go for it, just recommend no stand up when you yell.

Why do you need others? Have fun and support the team. Just display ALOHA.

Will be an interesting week of three games, Washington is will be a great challenge for the Wahine. -go Wahine

  11. Ron September 7, 2016 3:18 pm

All I can say about being old (which I am) , it beats the alternative. We watch the ballet that is volleyball because of the choreographed team work that produces a dramatic story each and every game. ” we don’t need no stinking Boom!”

  12. Maverick September 7, 2016 3:46 pm

    3. I’ll bet you 20 bucks that 1 and 2 are the same poster. The writing style is the same.

  13. Rabbit ears September 7, 2016 4:05 pm

That would be like talking to your self.

  14. kahuna September 7, 2016 4:12 pm

Yeah if you want to go “boom” then go ahead and start it. I don’t see why we have to follow any other school and copy their stuff.

The mainland tradition of standing for set point does not make any sense to me. Winning a set is only one step to your goal of winning the match. You really have not reached your goal. Is that worthy of a standing ovation??? Standing ovation, to me, is supposed to be given after you accomplished your goal.

I hope we stick with out own tradition and just stand for match point. Giving a Standing “O” after winning the first set is like getting all worked up after only leading after on quarter in football. Yeah its a great feeling to be leading after one quarter but I don’t think its worthy of standing.

  15. Ron September 7, 2016 4:16 pm

I would never bet against you Maverick, I think you have their number.

  16. warriorwahine September 7, 2016 4:24 pm

    11. and what exactly is the alternative? volleyball is not ballet. it is supposed to be a contest/competition.

‘you dont need no stinking boom?’ – see thats shows your spirit – too old. in competition, the last thing you want the team to be is ‘look old.’ i dont care said ‘old’ are loyal fans, apparently they are falling asleep on the team they are supposed to be supporting.

    12. congratulations! you owe me 20 bucks. how is that posters writing style same as mine? not even close.

    3. no my friend is not steve or laura nor beans. no idea who or what you talking story about.

  17. warriorwahine September 7, 2016 4:32 pm

    14. i didnt know they stood for set point on the mainland? how bizarre.

anyways, not trying to copy other teams nor ‘go mainland’ but what im saying is we need more hype for na wahine not more zzz’s. going BOOM on a jump serve is not that much effort than cheering loudly cheehoo nor as rowdy like the mainland.

  18. Ki September 7, 2016 5:06 pm

We need another Hackbarth to get the crowd going.

  19. hollycow September 7, 2016 5:22 pm

boom! Boom! BOom! BOOm! BOOM! ah forget it…..

  20. Cubicle1126 September 7, 2016 5:33 pm

didn’t the hawaii fans used to do something similar (yell ‘boom’ or a similar sound) when jessica sudduth served? i mean, granted, hers was a slow looping float serve, so the “boom” chant would have less of an effect on opposing teams …

i’m all for ways to get the crowd involved! if the crowd can be convinced to do it, why not? i don’t see how it would be unsportsmanlike …

  21. leron September 7, 2016 5:55 pm

#18 I’ve noticed one kid in the student section who’s Showed off his dance moves a few times this season and thought he could get the crowd pumped up.

  22. Ron September 7, 2016 6:10 pm

“Just when I think I’m out of the criticism game they pull me back in.” DearW.Wahine, if I wasn’t old I would be dead. that maybe a little esoteric for you to grasp. If you can not see the beauty in the sport, I feel sorry for you.

  23. warriorwahine September 7, 2016 6:10 pm

    20. so im not the only to recall that? i thought that weird too, considering a float serve.

now that just reminds me, didnt the crowd get involved clapping hands or slow clapping (including with the rest of the wahine) when mita uiato and emily hartong served? additionally in the mens team they chant (or whatever it is called) on their serves as well as to support na wahine when serving this past match versus ucla!

shouting BOOM upon the smack of a spin serve is brief and low effort but can be compelling especially towards their opponent, and especially versus washington coming up next, they deserve it. they tried to scare the wahine with a spin serving libero and aced nothing, and tayler higgins countered them with one in kind. (wahine, ‘they can serve.’) with 3 jump servers, make it terrify the oppponent to help na wahine score some wins by aces.

anyways you get it, why couldnt we get the crowd involved? ‘lets go bows’ is diminishing in meaning, groaning and grumbling is even worse for such a ‘high level.’ falling asleep (yeah i know you tired, go home) should be kapu!

  24. Andy September 7, 2016 6:45 pm

#1 – I was at the Chevron Invitational bottom level and screamed “Ace!” or “Oh No!” a couple of times if I saw Norene’s serve was heading towards a gap in the other team’s defense. She pulled through almost each time with an Ace or free ball return, so it was fun. There’s also precedent as fans used to yell “Ooooooooo” as Jane Croson threw up her super high serve tosses. But I got to admit, the fans on the lower level are on life support.

  25. Maverick September 7, 2016 7:00 pm

    13. Cindy mentioned there was at least one poster who was using multiple usernames and having conversations with herself on this blog. She requested that this activity stop.

  26. tongo September 7, 2016 7:04 pm

I can still remember when the chant “let’s go bows” was getting started at Klum. No, I am not talking about its definitive moment of inception or who started it first. Rather I am talking about when it first struck me as the rally cry for the team. In a timeout on a particularly tough match, I remember trying to see who was making a complete fool of themselves by hollering it out so loud. I felt kind of embarrassed. On that night, it was a older heavy set Hawaiian lady who had that “no shame” in your face local pride yelling – “let’s go bows”. It was beautiful. My family still chants it when the team needs it even though we may be thousands of miles away – and it’s a re-broadcast.

  27. warriorwahine September 7, 2016 7:07 pm

    22. very well grandpa, im old too. that aint esoteric for me. any kidding aside, i certainly wouldnt compare myself to being dead. yes i do see the beauty in the sport. thats why i love wahine volleyball. but if the beauty you speak of is not consisting of competition considering this is of ‘high level’, then you sir are mistaken.

this is volleyball, and including womens/wahine volleyball is a high energy sport. this isnt golf, thats low energy.

  28. Maverick September 7, 2016 7:08 pm

    22. Ron, this is as close to you going into gangsta mode as I’ve ever seen. I can see you saying, “Don’t make me angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.”

  29. Andy September 7, 2016 7:24 pm

#5 – yelling “Boom!” actually seems more polite than barking “Roof!”, so I wouldn’t sweat it.

WarriorWahine – I agree with #14. Just get a bunch of your friends together and go for it. If you’re feeling a little self conscious, that’s what the beer concession is there for! If the game is exciting or Norene pulls through with a couple of aces, your cheer might catch on. If not, at least you made the game a lot more fun for yourselves.

I was in Aloha Stadium student section in the early 80s when the first wave “broke” in the stadium. It took several weeks of effort and the same kids trying over and over, but it eventually worked. 35 years later, UH crowds are still doing the wave (at least in the SSC — don’t know if there are enough people at Aloha to do a wave).

  30. warriorwahine September 7, 2016 7:34 pm

    24. i was there during the wisconsin match and at set 3 norene looked calm but stern and then i was like ‘oh, is she going to toss that?’ BOOM her first serve an ace! then more fun, like her solo block at the middle and then my neighbor shoved me just in time that i saw her shove the ball over (joust at the net) against 2 girls bigger than her..like a BOSS.

she shoved the ball over TWICE and won 2 for 2 against 2 bigger girls than her. ‘like a BOSS.’ my neighbor said. ‘she shows that she doesnt play just to hang out with the big gals, but that she IS one of the BIG gals.’

“(Hawai’i) brought a new setter in to start the third set and her serve was nasty.” – Wisconsin Head Coach Kelly Scheffield

  31. Andy September 7, 2016 7:46 pm

#14 – I respect your opinion to not stand until the end of a contest, but I think fans should stand whenever they’re excited and feel like standing. For me, in football that can be after a touchdown, or even just a good stick on a running back. Why not in volleyball too? I stood up and cheered after exciting rallies. I gotta think the players on the court appreciate enthusiastic fan support for effort, and not just if they actually win.

  32. BeanS September 7, 2016 7:48 pm

    12. Ill be at the games this weekend. You can buy me a beer instead of the giving me a 20 as I am of no relation to the above said. This is only my second post on this blog and pretty sad of those that are thinking I’m someone else on here or whatever… Thanks for the Aloha guys.

  33. warriorwahine September 7, 2016 7:49 pm

    29. what im getting at is. we need MORE people to do that in the stan sheriff center. just like the barking of ‘Roof!’ which kind of sounds awkward by the announcer guy that i dont really see need to be carrying about. me and my bunch of friends together wont be sufficient enough to make the ‘BOOM!’ any spectacular.

  34. warriorwahine September 7, 2016 7:58 pm

    32. Aloha to you BeanS.

yeah ill take that beer too #12

lmao..yeah these characters on this blog think i or whoever is someone else or whatever.

  35. BeanS September 7, 2016 8:11 pm

Thank you warriorwahine! Appreciate it. I guess that’s how some of those veteran bloggers on here treat us “new” ones and roll out the conspiracy bus. Oh well its all good…

  36. darkfire35 September 7, 2016 8:44 pm

Ok, going off topic here. Didn’t the UH Athletic site used to have a team photo in the roster section? Also, we need to tell Granato and Kahakai to smile. Kinda like what Nikki used to tell TMO, lol.

And for the boomers here…think about the other side of the coin. Wouldn’t it kinda mess up the timing of the server who may be anticipating the sound of “boom” more than the timing that she should hitting at? Yeah…whatevahs, lol.

  37. Bleachercoach September 7, 2016 8:46 pm

Yup I get it…I feel having good sportsmanship has nothing to do with making our team feel like they are home.
I think it’s okay to get into the opponents server and just rattling other opponents if no profanity or racial remarks are made. I realize the lower section are filled with boosters and loyal elderly people, but maybe at the band section in the future we should encourage more students to come out and be that 7th man. Hey we are at a sporting event not a play or theater…We have very knowledgeable fans with plenty plenty “Aloha!”…We need to use that 7,000 plus fans minus the “once we’re rowdy elderly” to fire up our team….I am sure the girls and more recruits would be lured by that type of “TEAM SPIRIT!”

  38. warriorwahine September 7, 2016 10:02 pm

    36. what are you talking about? photos are there and they are both smiling.

also apparently you are confused about when BOOM should be yelled. it isnt meant to be choreographed or planned to be in sync with the player so that the player would supposed to be anticipating it upon hit like its with fanfare. BOOM is yelled upon the smack of the ball, NOT the anticipation smack of the ball (the ball has already been struck and is going wherever it is going.)

    ‘yeah…whatevahs’ to your thinking.

    37. not sure where you trying to get at “I feel having good sportsmanship has nothing to do with making our team feel like they are home.” are you saying so apparently to make the wahine feel at home it should just be ‘elderly loyal’ falling asleep on them or just plain silence? you seem to know that its a sporting event and not a play or theater.

also where did you get the idea we are trying to get into the opponents server? we are trying to intimidate their receive so that they get aced or make an overpass, not disrupt their server. (although if na wahine are receiving, they could bounce side to side like they are pumped ready for a fight and confuse the server where they might go as said in my rio bronze match example.)

  39. Surfboy September 8, 2016 12:11 am

Just saw this video of Emily Hartong killing it. Wish she was on the US National Team! My fav wahine volleyball player!

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fYp80VQ_zO4

  40. Ron September 8, 2016 5:34 am

Thank you Surfboy, She is also my favorite , the nicest, polite and open young lady that I ever met through the booster club. Great family also.

  41. tako September 8, 2016 7:07 am

thanks for that supa bazooka video. looks like she is getting better each year as is her trademark trait. maybe someday she’ll come back and coach here.

nuff about this boom thing…go sell it when you go to the game early.

  42. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 7:44 am

This is such a weird thread regarding how to cheer for a team.

Anyway, I’m really disappointed that Phoebe Grace is going to Utah. I didn’t realize that she had committed until this mornings article. Oh well. Another local player lost that could have been a difference maker for our wahine. Dang

  43. noblesol September 8, 2016 8:27 am

Some days I look forward to a thread closing. This be one.

  44. blunite September 8, 2016 9:13 am

    @39 — Mahalo.

Emily Hurting has obviously mastered the fast offense (fast sets) used by the Korean team. Internationally, many teams are going faster to boost production from their hitters. It is a trend that is only growing faster. (Notwithstanding Hawaii which has reverted back to the high outside sets reminiscent of the 1950s.)

  45. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 9:13 am

I wish Cindy could block the poster who keeps answering themselves with another user name. It’s really obvious and annoying.

  46. noblesol September 8, 2016 9:42 am

I watched the Emily Hartong video. They showed lots of sets out of the pipe, which tend to be fast and lower. No one tries to set a high slow pipe set, unless they’ve got an Emily Hartong in the back row. Pipe sets work best as a surprise, where they think it’s going to the MH. The majority of the sets to the outside were slow and high, allowing her to hit over or around the block. Quite often she was hitting over the block. There were a few low quick sets as well. If anything, I think it shows that Hyundai has figured out they need to get a hittable volleyball to Emily, where ever she is on the court and what ever set the pass will allow. Reminds me of when she was at Hawaii. Looks like Hyundai took a cue from the old Hawaii YouTube videos out there showing her hitting for the Bows.

  47. Maverick September 8, 2016 9:55 am

Here is a second and more recent video of Emily playing in Korea:

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fWt3pMsylUY

I understood all of three words: Emily, Hartong, and spiker

  48. noblesol September 8, 2016 10:05 am

Really nice to see her shoulder all healed up finally. I think it took a full year or more for her.

  49. Ron September 8, 2016 10:11 am

FYI- On Bobbies show this morning, Tiff said that Annie has been very impressive with her hitting in practice to the point that Dave was smiling, but she has not been allowed to block yet. There is speculation that she may be able to play this sunday vs. Washington.

  50. Maverick September 8, 2016 10:12 am

Gives a really balanced view of how well she played, including some really good kills. Enjoy!

  53. Cubicle1126 September 8, 2016 10:41 am

through yesterday’s matches, the big west teams are at .500 (28-28). hoping the conference as a whole can raise that … or at least not do worse than that…

  54. Cubicle1126 September 8, 2016 10:50 am

check that … some of the riverside results were mis-reported … they were 3-3 thru yesterday (not 2-4). so the big west is just above .500 (29-27). still hoping the conference can improve on that.

  55. Ron September 8, 2016 10:59 am

Thanks Maverick, loved watching Emily again. Noticed that they set the middles fast and Emily high. Very good passing allowed the setter much latitude on who to set.

  56. Maverick September 8, 2016 11:24 am

    55. Welcome. Today is Emily Hartong Day, so if you don’t get your fill of her videos, I can’t help you. Here is the post-match celebration:

    https://youtu.be/CKrIK-CrxuU

The KOVO championship apparently is best 3-out-of-5, so I was able to locate the highlights of games 1 and 2…Emily’s team swept the finals. I’ll post separately in a sec.

Last note: KOVO held their foreign player draft for the upcoming season and Hyundai retained Emily. Congrats to her. There is a video but she was the only draftee of the six not to be present, so I won’t post unless someone requests it. There may be a rule about retaining a player’s rights from year to year as Hyundai had the third pick.

    54. Unless the big west can win 60+% of their preseason matches, UH won’t get the RPI boost it needs. Even if that happens, failure to beat Washington will not help UH’s argument to host a subregional. But it may help get more than one big west team into the tournament.

  61. Maverick September 8, 2016 11:52 am

Emily Harong interviewed during last season’s media day. You’ll need to fast forward to get her parts as they were doing group interviews.

    https://youtu.be/MB8s4rEmEPc

  62. blunite September 8, 2016 2:23 pm

Maybe I’m reading the schedule incorrectly but it appears that Hawaii is not playing on Saturday, Northern Illinois and Utah Valley not playing on Sunday. May not affect the All Tourney team but Northern Illinois has to play 2 matches back to back on Saturday.

  63. uhfan September 8, 2016 2:34 pm

    62. The wahine are not playing Saturday because of the football game.

  64. blunite September 8, 2016 4:35 pm

    @61 Mahalo

The interviews were consistent with trends in International VB. Regarding the difference between US VB and Korean VB, Emily and Haylee both mentioned the quick/fast offense in Korea, as well as the great defense.

Looks like Karch has made believers of the International VB world.

  65. todde September 8, 2016 4:54 pm

I don’t think warriorwahine is Laura or Steve. Laura or Steve were more obsessive in pointing the faults of a player or coach. The writing style is also different.

  66. noblesol September 8, 2016 5:17 pm

The interviews were held before the start of their season. The videos were well after the season was underway, into their playoffs. Clearly from the videos, Emily was getting a lot of high sets, most well off the net. There was little quick or fast about them. And from the results, she seem to do well with them, often hitting over or downward off the top of the block, or finding seam. Of course, she is 6’2″ can jump well and has a high hitting point. Hyundai did set their MH’s with quick sets and low sets, but they never faced more than one blocker since Hyundai’s OH and Opp were both threats. They had a very balanced offense, good passing, the setter rarely had to chase, and she often back set to her opposite. They’d go quick when it was there but never forced it, and did very well with high slow sets to Emily. What I get out of the video’s wasn’t that they were trying to run a fast offense as much as they were focused on good passing (a relatively low pass right to the setter, about a meter off the net) and then spreading the ball around with deceptive setting and hittable balls, with quicker sets to the MH’s who were tall and slow and lacked much vertical and needed a quick set if they were going to be effective at all.

  67. Hot September 8, 2016 5:23 pm

    65. Laura and Steve are on VT as volleyballfanatic99. warriorwahine is similar to Laura/Steve in that he/shows goes on and on about a certain topic (cheering in this thread) and is always seeking Cindy’s attention (“say Cindy,”).

  68. hot September 8, 2016 5:44 pm

I haven’t been able to post the past few days. I wonder why. Haven’t changed my username or email.

  69. Maverick September 8, 2016 6:29 pm

Cindy, one idea for a future article is catching up with Emily Hartong. Her career has really taken off and I think the readers would like to see how well she is doing, her thoughts on playing in Korea, living abroad, national team aspirations, etc. Not sure when she is back in Hawaii, but something to consider.

  70. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 6:45 pm

new thread up for Thursday’s match.

  71. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 6:51 pm

yes, very weird topic about how to cheer for team.
Hawaii tried to do the Point, Bows in 96 but Moniz-Kahoohanohano put a stop to it, saying it was unsportmanship.
UW still does it, led by the P.A. guy, even though he was told during the NCAA tournament not to because it was supposed to be a neutral site.
In all my years of being at the NCAA tournament, I think Hawaii is is the only one who really takes the ‘neutral site’ seriously.

    67. don’t know why you had problems.
    68. when I can find some time.
