10 minutes to find out who will set for Wahine tonight.

  2. warriorwahine September 8, 2016 6:57 pm

mahalo to #65 on previous thread.

i was posting it but then it says i couldnt post cause cindy just closed it.

  3. warriorwahine September 8, 2016 7:01 pm

i couldnt make it to the arena tonight, anyone want to help me get the students or some people to yell BOOM for na wahine jump servers?

  4. cruisecontrol September 8, 2016 7:02 pm

Anybody watching the stream? It’s match time and it seems to be frozen.

  5. Blunite September 8, 2016 7:03 pm

From the looks of practice a fast offense is not in the cards tonight.

  6. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:04 pm

    4. Streaming not yet working. Don’t know why.

  7. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:04 pm

interesting lineup tonight. Burns and Higgins starting
as well as Granato, Greeley, Taylor, Kahakai and Maglio.

  8. Big Island VB fan September 8, 2016 7:04 pm

    4. Yes, it is frozen and there is no sound either, can’t listen to ESPN1420 either. Oh well, at least it’s not Washington, but some unknown. Guess I’ll go eat dinner and forget about it tonight.

  9. tongo September 8, 2016 7:05 pm

Yeah, it is frozen and says video interrupted. Help!

  10. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:05 pm

    6. don’t know why either, neither is livestats.

  11. localboy September 8, 2016 7:05 pm

    It’s frozen

  12. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:05 pm

    7. Agree. Very interesting lineup. We will see what they do with Castillo and Sibley.

  13. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:06 pm

why can’t you listen to radio. it’s online as espn1420am. com
    Stats are up.

  14. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:07 pm

    Sibley is in

  15. Blunite September 8, 2016 7:07 pm

Good overpass on 1st ball. Taylor 50% from the left

  16. WaWa September 8, 2016 7:08 pm

Maybe they are going with Burns in the middle because Mitchem may make an appearance to replace her and Castillo to the outside?? Was Mitchem cleared for tonite?? Go Bows!

  17. cruisecontrol September 8, 2016 7:08 pm

I can’t hear anything on the espn1420 radio site either.

  18. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:08 pm

Lineup probably will mess up Washington’s scouting report. Their staff is at the scouting table.

  19. z September 8, 2016 7:09 pm

    I like this lineup.

  20. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:10 pm

    16. Mtiche not cleared to play. She is not dressed.

  21. cruisecontrol September 8, 2016 7:11 pm

Never mind. I had my earphones plugged in & just removed them heh heh, so can hear over the speaker now. :/

  22. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:11 pm

    19. not their strongest but good against UVU

  23. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:12 pm

Smith in to serve for Sibley.

  24. Warrior Dave September 8, 2016 7:12 pm

Lexi Thompson and Nikki Taylor could be sisters. They look so much alike.

  25. Blunite September 8, 2016 7:14 pm

EM on the floor, more poor passing (not from EM)

  26. setaone September 8, 2016 7:14 pm

Any insight why Higgins over Iosia?

  27. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:14 pm

Only streaming is malfunctioning at this point. Radio and stats are working fine, although radio is a couple of points behind.

  28. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:15 pm

    some interesting subbing tonight.

  29. frings September 8, 2016 7:15 pm

No streaming video at Big West TV. If there is a contractual requirement that the games be streamed and UH is not abiding by it, I hope the league comes down hard on UH. Then perhaps the slugs at OCSports will get their stuff together and allow he broadcasts to be streamed.

  30. frings September 8, 2016 7:17 pm

Pure greed on the part of Time Warner.

  31. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:17 pm

    26. no insight other than this is the lineup they’re using against UVU. As mentioned, makes it difficult for UW to scout.
    25. it’s early. let them figure it out.
UH up 15-12 at the TTO

  32. Blunite September 8, 2016 7:18 pm

High ball left blocked, NT saves the day

  33. Willie September 8, 2016 7:18 pm

So, if the lineup tonight is to confuse the Huskie coaching staff I get it. So far, the sets are not as good as prior games. Even a set by Burns looked more like “soft hands” & “cherry”. Don’t want to over look UVS.

  34. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:18 pm

    29. UH is abiding by the contract. it’s just having problems.
Don’t expect OCSports to do it anytime soon IF EVER unless they can find a way to make people pay for it.

  35. Warrior Dave September 8, 2016 7:19 pm

No one can complain that Nikki is getting too many sets so far.

  36. warriorwahine September 8, 2016 7:19 pm

    5. agreed.

  37. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:19 pm

UVU is not a tall team, so our hitters should have an easier time of it than versus UCLA. Sable starting strong, but Granato having another challenging evening. Taylor doing ok, although without video, it is difficult for me to really understand what is going on in the match.

  38. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:20 pm

    33. Not saying that is the reason. just making a point that it will confuse the UW Staff.

  39. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:21 pm

    34. They can do what was done a few years ago, and charge a fee for online streaming. I paid by the match, like $6 or so, although I was very selective when buying matches.

  40. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:21 pm

    UH up 19-14. TO UVU

  41. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:22 pm

    39. they could but that’s on OCS to figure out. there has been no movement so far.

  42. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:24 pm

    41. As they say, it is what it is…

  43. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 7:25 pm

Regarding the “neutral” site during post season hosting. Hawaii is definitely the only one, or one of very few, that follows that. Nebraska when hosting the final four last year had a blacked out arena and highlights for their team when announced.

I didn’t know that Moniz put a stop to the cheering. Let the crowd cheer. There is a lot of other stuff said that is much worse than that. Haha

  44. WaWa September 8, 2016 7:27 pm

    43. What did I miss about Moniz putting a stop to cheering?

  45. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:27 pm

    UH wins 25-18.

  46. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:28 pm

    Video is working!

  47. cruisecontrol September 8, 2016 7:29 pm

    Ah. Video is finally on.

  48. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 7:29 pm

    24. Agree. I saw her and thought Hawaii was wearing black and thought when the heck did they change uniforms. They could be twins.

  49. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:29 pm

    43. that’s my memory of what happened. Boosters had seen it done at SIU when we were there for the NACWAA.
    44. see end of previous thread

  50. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:30 pm

With two young left sides, we will have to live with a lot of hitting errors until Mitchem comes back (wish Greeley heals up soon as well), and even then it is not clear how a reshuffled lineup will perform.

  51. Blunite September 8, 2016 7:31 pm

UVU a few service faults (6)

  52. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 7:31 pm

I also think this is a juke lineup to mess with Washington.

If Annie does come back for Sunday, Keegan Cook won’t know what team they are playing.

  53. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:32 pm

    51. and UH had 3 SEs

  54. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:33 pm

Audio is a play or so behind the video on streaming.

  55. Blunite September 8, 2016 7:34 pm

Note – after serving move up quickly to cover tip

  56. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:34 pm

Frings, that was a very uncalled for comment. Be civil. you should not with bad things to happen to anyone.

  57. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:35 pm

UH challenged a NV Shoji now 7 of 9, has lost the last 2

  58. frings September 8, 2016 7:37 pm

Sent OC16 an email expressing my displeasure.

  59. Big Island VB fan September 8, 2016 7:38 pm

    29. Since OC Sports won’t live stream, the athletic director should not renew its contract. Maybe we should all write to him. How can we reach him?

  60. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 7:40 pm

I know it’s a vball thread. But just seeing the football guys there and Rolo supporting vball. I LOVE this dude. He’s really trying to build the culture and fan base of “Pride Rock”.

Ok I’m done talking football. Back to our regular scheduled volleyball posts. 🙂

  61. frings September 8, 2016 7:40 pm

This is nothing but corporate greed.

  62. Bleachercoach September 8, 2016 7:41 pm

We don’t look very good….our girls have no energy….we are fortunate to be a 3-3 ranked team…Better watch out for the BW conderence…we need better passing
    Play the right people coach

  63. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:42 pm

Granato shanking a couple of passes. Ugly.

  64. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:44 pm

Maglio with her 7th kill. UH up 15-11 at the TTO

  65. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:45 pm

Middles hitting .642 combined. Middles getting 27% of the attempts.

  66. Blunite September 8, 2016 7:46 pm

Passing bug biting both sides, non – discriminatory

  67. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:46 pm

    58. appropriate action. It’s no longer Time Warner. They’ve been sold to Charter Communications.

  68. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:49 pm

Granato has gone line twice tonight. Ponce in to serve.

  69. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:50 pm

feel like i’m watching CNN with the blog. so nit-picky. Burns hits long, UVU to 18-16. TO UH.

  70. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:51 pm

UH hitting 250 pts. higher than UVU and only up by 2.

  71. Blunite September 8, 2016 7:51 pm

Can’t run middle without a good pass, that said , gotta get it in when the opportunity is there

  72. frings September 8, 2016 7:51 pm

Charter is the cable provider where I live here in SW Washington. I have already called and canceled my service with them over this matter.

  73. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:52 pm

    69. Fair observation. basically same line up as we saw vs. ucla except for Burns, and some other DSs getting playing time.

  74. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 7:54 pm

Yeah, have not been a fan of oc16 lately. They used to televise soccer. Lucky to get a couple a year now. It’s disappointing, especially this year since they are undefeated.

  75. Blunite September 8, 2016 7:54 pm

    UVU shadowing NT w/DB

  76. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:55 pm

UVU with a lift. UH up 23-20 TO Wolverines.
Taylor has been blocked on her last three swings.

  77. Maverick September 8, 2016 7:57 pm

    5. Blunite, how long of a look did the coaching staff give Ross during practice this past week?

  78. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 7:58 pm

I’m loving me some Sibley tonight. Hitting much smarter. Hope she continues to grow.

  79. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:58 pm

    Maglio ends it 25-21.

  80. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 7:59 pm

    77. didn’t know blunite was at practice. It was me and not many others.

  81. Blunite September 8, 2016 7:59 pm

Solution to NT shadowing- quicks, UVU MB unable to adjust

  82. Maverick September 8, 2016 8:00 pm

    80. Maybe you can provide your perspective on Ross?

  83. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 8:00 pm

But if you’d like to ask me, be happy to oblige.just wondering why you asked Blunite.

  84. Maverick September 8, 2016 8:00 pm

    Just asked…lol

  85. Blunite September 8, 2016 8:01 pm

I went to SSC early (for evening match)

  86. Tim September 8, 2016 8:02 pm

First match I’ve come to watch the wahine this year but not impressed. Other team makes a lot of mistakes wahine getting blocked fairly easily by other team.

  87. Blunite September 8, 2016 8:02 pm

    Did not attend day practice

  88. Maverick September 8, 2016 8:03 pm

    83. Blunite mentioned attending practice in 5, but apparently attended tonight early, not practice during the week. What did you observe, Cindy?

  89. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 8:05 pm

Entire football team has come out to the court. Don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen.

  90. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 8:05 pm

Man, EM has really come out of her shell. She’s smiling, laughing and joking around more. There was a shot of her last week where she was doing the “I’m watching you” with her fingers to somebody and raising her brows. It just made me crack up. She has a great laugh.

  91. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 8:06 pm

Football team having a 6 on 6 game. pretty funny.

  92. warriorwahine September 8, 2016 8:07 pm

    62. no energy is correct. this was what i been complaining about. great if it throws off scouting but this slow play better not come sunday for the big contest.

  93. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 8:07 pm

Rolo is changing things around campus.

  94. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 8:07 pm

Observed them using a lot of combinations. They gave Ross a look but they’d rather have Sibley out there.

  95. Maverick September 8, 2016 8:08 pm

    94. Thx.

  96. Maverick September 8, 2016 8:09 pm

    93. That’s great. Now if he can change things in recruiting and on the gridiron…

  97. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 8:09 pm

Castillo in the middle probably for Burns.

  98. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 8:10 pm

    Iosia setting

  99. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 8:13 pm

    UH up 6-1. to UVU

  100. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 8:13 pm

I agree Mav. Although, He’s very charismatic. I think he will get players others couldn’t. I have not been to a FB game during Chow’s run. But I’m going on Sat.

  101. warriorwahine September 8, 2016 8:14 pm

well scout or no scout, now we got better energy.

  102. Blunite September 8, 2016 8:15 pm

If it works, good move playing as many as possible

  103. Maverick September 8, 2016 8:15 pm

Agree HCF. Building a new culture is critically important, and that is what he is trying to do. He’s got Chow’s recruits now, so I’m giving him three years to build the program.

  104. Maverick September 8, 2016 8:17 pm

Audio and video now better in sync.

  105. z September 8, 2016 8:19 pm

    Sibley .500.

  106. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 8:20 pm

Maglio with her 10th kill. 4 Wahine in double digits. UH up 14-4. TO UVU

  107. Blunite September 8, 2016 8:21 pm

UVU can’t dbl NT and EM, middle is UVU weakness

  108. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 8:21 pm

Yup. First step is getting fans in the stadium. All the community stuff he’s doing will help. That Costco thing was genius.

  109. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 8:22 pm

    Maglio is .769

  110. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 8:22 pm

Ross is in. as is Koelsch and Guinasso.

  111. Maverick September 8, 2016 8:26 pm

    108. What was the Costco thing he did?

  112. Warrior Dave September 8, 2016 8:26 pm

    McKenna Ross is a beast!!!

  113. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 8:27 pm

They went out to Costco and helped shoppers deliver their groceries to their cars. Good community building.

  114. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 8:28 pm

I know we need kahakai on defense, but maybe throw Emma back there and let kahakai make a run in the front. She can.

  115. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 8:29 pm

    UH wins 25-8

  116. Blunite September 8, 2016 8:29 pm

UVU did not challenge at all

  117. warriorwahine September 8, 2016 8:29 pm

did you all see/hear mckenna ross fire that bullet? dang!

  118. Blunite September 8, 2016 8:31 pm

UVU coach may not be aware about challenge system here

  119. Maverick September 8, 2016 8:31 pm

Can’t read much into this match. UVU was outgunned, particularly in set 3. Easy to say Iosia and Castillo should be in as the offense ran more smoothly, but it is only one set. Interesting to see what happens on Sunday.

  120. Maverick September 8, 2016 8:31 pm

    113. That was a really nice gesture.

  121. haleiwacrossfitter September 8, 2016 8:32 pm

I LOVE our aunties soooo much. I hope there are people ready to step up when they cannot one day. So much love for them. Just the sweetest. <3

  122. islandman September 8, 2016 8:32 pm

Tiff said everyone played, except for Rika.

  123. warriorwahine September 8, 2016 8:33 pm

    112. yeah never mind her being defensive specialist, more like offensive specialist to me. perhaps daves final secret weapon or mobile reserves hidden in the woods.

  124. Maverick September 8, 2016 8:33 pm

Rika hasn’t played all season. She may end up redshirting.

  125. cruisecontrol September 8, 2016 8:37 pm

What a nice, balanced offense by UH tonight. I hope they can carry that through the next two matches, and on. Set 3 was nearly as much fun to watch as the latter half of the AZ match.

  126. Blunite September 8, 2016 8:37 pm

Note: Both Saturday games are free
    NIU plays UVU and W

  127. Andy September 8, 2016 8:44 pm

I think we can see who the first team was tonight. It was nice seeing Kendra in, though. Her back sets are pretty to watch.

  128. Maverick September 8, 2016 8:46 pm

    126. NIU has a longer trip home, so I’m sure UH accommodated, although two matches in one day is not ideal. UVU probably going home early Sunday as well.

  129. Ron September 8, 2016 9:36 pm

My take: 1. The freshman class is amazing.
    2. Iosia will not start even though she is slightly better than Higgins.
    3. If Granato gets a perfect set she can bomb it but Sibley is the smarter
hitter and could be the next Emily H.
    4. We are in great shape in the middle.
    5. Kahakai is truly amazing and after reading this mornings paper, I
    know why. Thanks cindy

  130. Cindy Luis September 8, 2016 9:37 pm

    128. two matches in one day is pretty common. it’s how teams manage to get more matches in since it’s the number of playing dates that are restricted.

only Okino didn’t play. As mentioned before, Shoji will offer it to a player but doesn’t mean she’ll take it. We’ll see what happens with her.

    118. The UVU coach knows about the challenge system being used. All the coaches are made aware. Besides, Shoji used a challenge which would have been a clue.

  131. Willie September 8, 2016 10:13 pm

Don’t quite understand the mixing up of the lineup to confuse Washington coaches scouting and Sunday prep. Did they leave after set 2 tonight, not seeing Iosia and Castillo? The Wahine play a 5 & 1 N. Illinois team, will they fiddle with the line up again to mess up Huskie scouting? Lastly, with the Wahine on OC 16, couldn’t the Washington coaches get access to all 6 of the prior games by having someone tape them?

With all of these scenarios can’t figure out how just one night of a mixed lineup changes tendencies, pass, serve and receive patterns, etc.

  132. Bleachercoach September 8, 2016 10:36 pm

Mckenna Ross may be a walk on. and undersized, but she definitely plays BIG..
I know it probably won’t happen but I would like to see her get in the mix. She hits very smart. She hits angles and straight down. She may not have the power like Granato, but I truly like this girl. She plays hungry and has a good demeanor out there just like Emma Smith. I may have very bad vision, but I am not blind. How many bloggers agree or disagree? I love the interchanging lineup in the 3rd blow out set…Why wait so long all the time?

  133. Maverick September 8, 2016 10:43 pm

    131. I dont think it was UH’s intention to confuse Washington with the lineup. I think Shoji is still experimenting. Cindy stated this the lineup might make scouting more difficult, but she may not have thought about the game videos on YouTube that everyone has access to. I’ll let her clarify.

In any case, if I was Washington, I’d watch the UCLA match first, then this weekend’s matches. If Mitchem plays middle on Sunday and Castillo moves left, then Washington may need to make a lot of in-game adjustments.

  134. Maverick September 8, 2016 10:58 pm

    132. Don’t take my response the wrong way, but I think you may have selection bias regarding Ross. You may be emphasizing her performances against Arizona and in tonight’s third set without placing them in context. Arizona has a short setter in the front row, and it was easy for the team to hit over her. A big reason why Granato had a big match. UVU is not a tall team, and not at UH’s level. So while Ross had good results, she didn’t against a team like UCLA, which is tall and very good. And she really didn’t do much against Pacific and wasn’t set at all in the UCLA match. At best, she may be a TBD in terms of quality, but it’s not like she is killing it in practice…otherwise, she and not Sibley or Granato would be playing most of the sets.m tonite, Cindy mentioned that the staff prefers Sibley to Ross, and that is after another week of practice.

Last point: Ross hit for 1.000 on three attempts, but Sibley and Granato hit for very high percentages with many more attempts. Difficult to replace the starters when they are hitting well, particularly Sibley tonite.

  135. noblesol September 9, 2016 12:37 am

Agree with Mav re Ross. She’s a gamer though, hits smart, and has a whip for an arm. She also plays great defense out there. Wouldn’t surprise me if she keeps finding her way unto the floor and taking some reps from the starters. She’s someone everyone will overlook until she’s quickly scored on them three times. When your bench can produce its a big lift to the team.

Big improvement tonight was dealing with the overpass and putting them down. Only one that I recall that was questionably played, where Em choose to pass it instead of spike it, but she made a nice a little bump set to the setter, who quick set her right back and point scored. So, no harm no foul. Shoji did talk to her about it though.

Burns looked better tonight then her last outing. The timing connection with her setters though still needs work, but I’d say it’s a 50/50 partnership thing between her and the setters. Once they have it down though it looks promising. Burns does get some good pop on the ball, she just needs to start seeing the floor a bit better and put it where they ain’t. As for blocking she has nice reach but tonight all the blockers seemed to have a night where they weren’t quite together and were a bit out of position, body and hands. Castillo came in the third set though and looked good again. Blocking wasn’t quite there for her either, but her hitting looked strong and her timing with the setters was good.

As for setting, don’t think they were trying to mess with W’s scouting by starting Higs. Tonight was a chance to get her reps, and at this point her and Iosia aren’t far apart in the results they deliver. My sense is that Iosia has all the raw talent required but that Higs knows this team a bit better and how Shoji wants to set them, even though sometimes she needs KK to relieve her. Chemistry is important, and how to get it and keep it can take some time and work. Besides, the team seems fine at the moment with more than one setter, and keeping them both in the mix will help them both. It will make them a tougher team to scout, and gives Shoji more in-game buttons he can push.

I think all the DS’s played except the aforementioned Okino. Emma S. stood out for me. She had a very good night serving, serving a tough low floater that UVU had a difficult time with. Most impressive for me though was on set point she made sure to just get it in, backing off her toughest serve just a bit. That showed good VBIQ, as UVU at that point was no threat of getting back into system or stealing back momentum. All the moment required was getting the ball in play.

Regarding Ross. I think there’s a reason why she was invited to play as a defensive specialist and why Granato, who looks to be the same height as her, was recruited to be a hitter. It’s likely that Granato performs better in practice, and the only reason Ross hit against Arizona was because both Sibley and Koelsch struggled. Nevertheless, she has done well when called upon and it’s great for the team thay they have another option at either pin.

Why was Higgins starting? I think it’s two things: 1) Shoji has a tendency to go with his upperclassmen; 2) Higgins may have an advantage in terms of familiarity in setting the returnees, although IMO, she didn’t really do well against UCLA.

UVU is now 3-5, the result should be put into perspective in light of the competition. (Cal Poly also swept UVU.)

    — Once again poor passing contributed to the UVU blocks. UH middles need more sets (my preference is 33%+). Fortunately, UVU also had passing problems which prevented them from being in-system.

    — Shoji said “we shouldn’t be getting blocked like that by an undersized team.” Obvious reference is to KS (since MG and MR are also undersized). What he neglects to say is that the poor passing made it clear to everyone in the SSC who was going to be set.

    — UVU had 7 SE in set 1 and numerous poor passes; yet was able to stay close in both sets 1 & 2.

    — UVU MB shadowed NT in sets 2 & 3. This may explain why EM and Ross had an easy time (when passing permitted). There was no solid wall (i.e. UCLA & KS) against Ross.

    — UVU failed to take more advantage with soft tips (just over the block like UCLA). UH back row often plays too far back to reach the soft tip that trickles over the block.

    — 3 SE/set is too much. Practice is needed.

    – Agreed, the passing needs to be better. Although they managed to cut back on the overpasses, the setter was too often having to chase a pass that was too short or just a pop-up dig that couldn’t be called a pass.
    – UVU had 8 blocks, at least 4 of those were against Nikki, who had 6 hitting errors, 12 kills, 24 attacks, and hit .250. Sibs had 2 hitting errors, 11 kills, 17 attacks, hit .529. Ross had 3 kills, hit a perfect 1.000. Granato had 3 errors, 11 kills, 24 attacks, hit .333. The three MH’s combined had only 1 error, 16 kills, 25 attacks, and hit .600. Clearly Shoji was talking about Nikki shouldn’t be getting blocked like that by an undersized team.
    – Agreed that the back row likes to play deep, but that is coaching not players. Shoji always seems surprised they are slow to cover the tip. Well, he has them set up deep, so I’m always left wondering why he is surprised.
    – Serving wasn’t much of an issue in the game but overall if one were to nitpick they could pick on Nikki, who had 4 of the 8 service errors. She also had one of the two team aces and was the reason for many overpasses and free balls which were converted to points. Overall team serving was .890 which isn’t terrible, but could be improved on.
    – SO in conclusion Nikki had a bit of an off night, but the rest of the team found a hitting groove as the match wore on, and the setters and back row players did a nice job of distributing sets. Where they never really got clicking was on team blocking, which definitely is within their capacity to improve on.

Dave wanted more offense from the left side and he got it. Yes Nikki struggled but she still is the heart of the team. I liked how Burns played. She will get better then watch out. Her size alone has cause hitters to alter their shots. I saw a lot of touches by our blockers which ended up being dugged. To me that is almost as good as a block. Hard to have good chemistry when you keep switching players but I think the wahine have done a nice job. Different line ups and looks gives us a lot of options. Casey gets better with each match. I thought she did a real good job when she got in.

Yeah, I liked Burns also – lots of potential. Got fooled coupled times but Natasha will get better. She was quick to getting herself in position to make herself available for an attack. She was working hard.

Kudos to Sibley for coming back mentally strong. Kirsten’s shots suggest she is probably a better good beach player.

    new thread up for Friday

    To answer a few things:
My comment about how Hawaii’s uses different players makes it hard to scout. True that the videos available on UH help the scouting but the fact that UH can do A, B, C, D, E etc means the opponents have to prepare for a number of options.

Burns very much a work in progress. She should get better with time as, to quote Shoji, she grows into body. Really needs to work on her footwork and her blocking technique.
