The price of paradise
Last year, Gov. Ige and I had chatted about UH sports.
OK, OK, it was for about 30 seconds. And it was outside a rest room during the intermission of a men’s volleyball match at the Stan Sheriff Center. He asked me something about UH football. I did not ask him anything about the location of my state-tax-refund check. From this brief encounter, I extrapolated, at least in my mind, that Gov. Ige has an interest in UH sports.
That commitment will be measured when he acts on the Legislature’s bill that recommends appropriating $3 million to be shared between the UH-Manoa and UH-Hilo athletic departments. Gov. Ige has until July to approve or veto the measure.
The two athletic departments will wait until the appropriation is approved, if it is, to discuss how the money will be divided and used. But the $3 million — coincidence? — is equal to the extra amount UH-Manoa pays in travel subsidies, guarantees and its own travel above what comparable schools spend each academic year in those areas. (“Comparable” schools are members of five non-Power-Five conferences.)
Overall, in fiscal year 2015, UH spent $2.9 million in travel subsidies and appearance guarantees, and $3.8 million to travel to road games.
UH-Manoa AD David Matlin said the “differential costs” are “unique to our geography.” Translation: That’s the cost of conference membership for a school in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
In a presentation to the Board of Regents in November 2015, the athletic department spelled out the value of UH sports to the state.

pleasantly surprised that i was wrong yesterday about the $3 appropriation by the legislature. step in the right direction, can’t see the gov vetoing it. of course doesn’t really cover travel costs because it’s split between manoa and hilo but small steps are better than none. mostly another validation of the new AD. good job matlin!
sorry $3m. just feels like $3. getting local politicians to understand the economic and emotional benefit of UH athletics is like pulling teeth sometimes…

It’s tricky because the appropriation came out of committee and is listed as an amendment. If you were to look at the bill, it wouldn’t show initially. But it’s I there.
It’s the Legislature that set the appropriation amount, not the governor. You can call your local lawmaker if you feel the money isn’t adequate. But when you consider that the Cancer Center got zilch, the athletic department did OK.
Will the BOR want a cut out of that amount? For what you may say…
They’ll figure a way out on how to get some of that in their pockets…
Great to hear the Legislature is stepping up to help,now only if HTA would do their part and pitch in even half that amount I think Hawaii athletics can get back solid ground

thus, Matlin can now look elsewhere to cut the annual deficit [ football becomes a greater money winner in 2016 ] and cover other “expenses” with part of the $3 million
HTA has shown its true colors when their leader totally ignores those who say UH athletics brings $$$ to our tourism industry and many, many local businesses who sell merchandise or provide service to visitors — shops, bus, taxi, restaurants, rental equipment, etc.

Have an exciting product albeit a winning program, ala the basketball team in 2015-2016 and people will come back. People are counting on Rolo and it’s all about getting good players in the program and deliver on the field. That’s a lot of stress right there. Chow got some good players, but not enough. I think John Ursua will be electrifying, both as a receiver and as a return man. I also think he’s a terrific point guard in basketball and he could play for Ganot, just like Ostrowski did. He has dynamic playmaking skills. Just catch his football and basketball highlights on you tube when he was in high school. It’s quite something.

Going through that report u link ST I think Hawai’i is better off going independent in football especially with the revised Hawai’i exemption.The Mountain West doesn’t give us any money. The only reason we needed to be in a conference is to help schedule games. Now with the exemption we shouldn’t have much problems with that. I don’t think UH will ever get in the Pac 12 but I’m sure UH can do a similar deal with the Pac 12 as Norte Dame did with the ACC and try to cut a deal with some of the Pac 12 tv money. Maybe playing power 5 schools will boost attendance especially when we play USC, UW with all the alumni living here.
I hope the gov sees how much fans love UH sports and will continue to support the athletic program in the future.

Today is senior day for the Na Wahine Softball Team, they have 5 seniors this year, Sarah McAndrew, Tayana Mata, Dori Ann Sugai, Kiani Wong and Keiki Carlos. They play a double header today with the first game at 2:00 pm, the second game at about 4:00 pm. They will honor the seniors after the game.
So if you are going to the baseball game come on down a few hours early an catch some softball and support the girls…….
What is the “new” Hawaii exemption worth to a Power 5 conference?
How will their bottom line improve and contribute to the individual school and conference?
Will the conference delete any consideration to travel expense allocation if member schools will reap a larger monetary benefit from TV and an extra home game?
Will a conference, who invites UH, seek to amend its current TV contract because of the added value to sponsors, TV ads, etc.?
Is it less/more than what us UH supporters believe?
If the PAC 12 moves to PAC 14, who will be invited to join with UH?

North Div: Washington, Washington St, Oregon, Oregon St, Cal, Stanford, and
Hawaii
South Div: USC, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona St, Utah, Colorado, and San Diego St
Boise St would be a consideration, but what does it have to offer in other team sports including track & Field, baseball, volleyball, water polo, swimming/diving?; population base/recruiting?; location?. How many Idaho players have been recruited by the PAC 12 vs San Diego area?
like Midori tells me, “keep dreaming, Dad”. it’s not time consuming nor expensive.

UH should go independent with a agreement with the Pac 12 to play at least 5 games just like what Notre Dane has with the ACC. Playing the power 5 teams pretty much guarantees national tv exposure. I don’t the Pac 12 will add us just because of the exemption but rather have an agreement so Pac 12 teams can guarantee to use the “0” week and they will have more exposure before the rest of the power 5 conferences start their season.
The only reason we joined a conference was for scheduling and not worry about finding teams to play us. Now with the revised exemption we have leverage to schedule teams for years to come. I’m surprised the MWC helped us with this. Maybe they want us to leave the conference.
UH needs to be in a conference. The problem has never been finding opponents in September. It’s filling the schedule in October and November
I would think if this exemption gave the opponent an extra bye if they don’t play a 13th game then they could play UH during their other bye week in conference play which is usually in October. But yes if they can’t have an agreement with a P5 conference to guarentee play an x amount of games then staying in a conference is needed.

I don’t agree. Times have changed since the last round of conference realignments.
First, the Independents: Notre Dame, BYU, UMASS, Army, and NMSU are all going to be independent for the foreseeable future, and will have the same October/November issues Hawaii will have. UH will easily be able to get 4 of 5 independents to play Hawaii every year. Notre Dame will probably not play, although they have a similar CFP selection issue as the Big 12. While the Big XII has been looked down upon due to not having a championship game, Notre Dame has been frowned upon for not playing on Championship Saturday. The Irish could play an occasional December game in Hawaii.
Who wants to play UH? SJSU and UNLV are schools that need home games with UH to boost their attendance numbers. I’m sure UH can get long term home and home deals with them. There could be others that want to play Hawaii, like maybe Fresno State and SDSU, but neither needs to play UH.
The FCS team: UH needs to look at schools in conferences that don’t participate in the FCS playoffs and schedule them during November. That leaves the Ivy League, SWAC and MEAC. IMO, UH could rotate between SWAC and MEAC schools. Those conferences have several “Classics” that can be showcased on a Week 0. For example, the Magic City Classic(Birmingham)between Alabama A&M and Alabama State draws over 60,000 fans annually to Legion Field. If you put that game on a Week 0, it’s guaranteed the game will sell out all 72,000 seats, as they wouldn’t have Alabama games and Auburn games to compete with for fans.
Those are 7 very realistic choices for October-November games. For the September games look at the 2019 schedule, which already has an extra weekend, add the 7 games, and see what a schedule would likely look like under the exemption. UH would almost always have a front-loaded schedule, but could likely have 8-9 home games per year.

The baseball team needs to win every game. There is no margin for error. As it looks now, Hawaii will drop the penultimate game to LBSU because they ran out of effective bullpen guys.
I think Coach Trapasso should have burned his starter. Worry about tomorrow. Play it like a regional elimination game. Start Lawrence Chew and see how far he can go, then use Pigg, Mitchell, etc…
Great comeback in the ninth though. They didn’t quit.
