A “good dude”

In a game of word association, if someone said, “Joshua Leonard,” the automatic response would be “good.”

He was a good family man, good football teammate and, for two UH seasons, a good player.

In 2007, his first season after transferring from a JC, Leonard blocked a field-goal attempt late in the third quarter to spur the Warriors to a 35-28 victory over Washington. The next season, he started 12 games at defensive tackle, amassing eight tackles for losses. He had a brief career in the NFL.

“Woke up to some (bad) news,” former UH player Jake Heun wrote on Facebook this morning. “The world lost a good dude.”

Nick Rolovich tweeted: “The world lost a great Warrior today. Thoughts and prayers for his family.”

Indeed, Joshua Leonard was one of the good ones.

Damn… This was my earlier days as a avid recruiting follower but next to Sopoaga, Josh Leonard might have been the 2nd highest rated DL recruit at Hawaii. He was really good. Don’t even know how we got him. RIP

In the song Abraham, Martin, and John it mentions the good die young. Joshua Leonard was a big need at DT for the Hawaii Warriors coming out of Junior College. Yeah, he, Isaac, and Chad Kalilimoku was a big recruit get too. And I also think Attrice Brooks was a 4 star recruit too, but he was a head case. Aaron Zwahlen was rated an ESPN 300 and got a 4 star rating from them. So we’ll see if he is that good as they say he was in high school. There are no guarantees, but his film indicated he could throw and he is very fast. Spring ball anticipation is high.

RIP Mr. Joshua Leonard and condolences to the Leonard OHANA.

  25. Derek December 9, 2015 10:02 am

ST indicated that Kevin Lempa on the BC show this morning that he might be joining the UH staff. Lempa is at Boston College. BC’s defense was one of the best, but their offense was doodoo.

LizKauai, you really don’t need to subscribe to SA. There is a simple, common search that gives you free access to the paper’s content: obviously, wouldn’t post it here out of respect.

The very nature of search engine technology is they are always indexing material posted to the Internet with or without paywall restrictions and try to out compete other sites to present as much content as possible to maximize viewership. It doesn’t hurt that there coders are more adept than most newspaper’s coders.

That’s why the subscription model will eventually die out in favor of advertising based business models (e.g., like Google). Of course, that change will cause downward pressure on the salaries of the content producers, but that is a topic for another day.

  32. Derek December 9, 2015 11:05 am

I was just looking at the 2007 roster that went 12-0 and was wondering who were our running backs. Well, we had Leon Wright-Jackson and we had the unsung guy, Daniel “Nacho” Libre. Remember him. He was slippery, he had a burst, he could change direction. Then, what caught my eye was the secondary. Here’s a sampling:
Erik Robinson, Ryan Mouton, Jacob Patek, Myron Newberry, Gerard Lewis, Ryan Keomaka, Keao Monteilh, Erik Pederson, Keenan Jones, Desmond Thomas. Apologies to anyone that I missed. What a good group, and what depth. If Rolo has that kind of depth we would have a winning record, of course, if we have a good QB. Just some good memories.

  33. z December 9, 2015 11:30 am

    32. David Farmer. Wide receiver corp was pretty good too.

  34. Sangamon Keith December 9, 2015 11:40 am

I think the reason for undefined is Tyson Helton, currently OC at Western Kentucky. He coached at UH for four years, is good friends with Rolo, and is directing an offense that looks a lot like Rolo’s run n shoot-pistol combo offense of 2010-11 era. Like Rolo’s 2010 team, Helton’s offense I’d averaging over 500 yards per game. Only problem … new Georgia head coach might also be interested in Helton as OC.

    Just my opinion. Keith

  35. Old School Dave December 9, 2015 11:55 am

Coach Rolovich can only hire assistants within the salary cap that he’s given.

Want to attract more students to stay home? How about maintaining and repairing the buildings on the UH campus? The price of repairing existing buildings on campus are upwards of half a billion dollars. When you “let things go” you’re going to have to pay more, eventually when the roof caves in.

    http://khon2.com/2015/12/08/half-a-billion-dollars-needed-to-catch-up-with-uh-maintenance-projects/

State Legislator Isaac Choy slammed down a UH official regarding the cost involved and basically told them to go “pound sand” and “no bodah us with your complaints.” Is Choy a friend or critic of UH?

If Lahainaluna High can get $7 million from a part-time resident, why couldn’t UH be able to attract 3-4 times that much?

  36. Traitmanz December 9, 2015 12:02 pm

Can we get Craig Stutzman as OC already. Whats the hold up Rolo. Lelie as WRs coach.

  37. H-Man December 9, 2015 12:11 pm

ST, I subscribe to both digital and newspaper print (4 days a week), and I cannot find the Brian Smith article in today’s print paper that you mention. Or are you referring to the “Ulu-Perry, Smith expected to join Warriors” article. But this article is included in today’s digital subscription as well. Is there another article you are referring to?

  38. z December 9, 2015 12:15 pm

Go to UH website for announcement of the return of Brian Smith. Rolo says he brings offensive coordinator experience but did not name him the OC.

  39. z December 9, 2015 12:17 pm

    37. It is there with the Ulu-Perry announcement. Same article.

  40. NotNasti December 9, 2015 12:25 pm

OSD: Isaac Choy is no friend of UH. Last year, they asked for $40 mil supplemental to address building repairs, and he gave them $7 mil. He then blames them for mismanaging the money by not being able to cover their repairs. It’s like your father giving you a buck for a $10.00 haircut, and subsequently refusing to give you more money for that haircut because you don’t know how to manage your money. In 2013, he cut the entire budget request to construct a pharmacy school in Hilo, even after hearing testimony that the school, which is already in existence, was given conditional accreditation – the condition being the construction of a pharmacy school. The current pharmacy school is comprised of portable buildings. The funding was restored in 2014, but not without a big fuss from him about his “concerns” about the management of the university. Believe what you want about the University of Hawaii, however, it needs supporters, not detractors, at all levels, especially the legislative and executive branch.

  41. jeezy33 December 9, 2015 12:48 pm

Looks like BYU landing Sitake. My initial choice for Hawaii HC.

  42. Na Alii Pride December 9, 2015 12:55 pm

Don’t get me started about Isaac Choy. I sent him an email about funding cost of attendance. I give him credit for responding, but he basically called me an idiot and said I had no idea what goes on.
His idea for helping fund COA was to get together with our peers in the Mountain West and Big West and agree on an amount. Really? Can anyone see Boise State (or even Long Beach State) playing nicely?
He then said UH should take on more of the cost and not rely on donations. He says this at the same time that his committee slashes funding to UH? Where does he think the money is supposed to come from? And the way he behaves in these sessions doesn’t give him any credibility.

  43. Na Alii Pride December 9, 2015 12:56 pm

#41 I was hoping UH could land him too. He was making over $750,000 as DC, so it was a long shot.

  44. shadow December 9, 2015 12:58 pm

If Lempa is returning, would be as DC since that is the only defensive assistant position that could be anywhere near what he makes at Boston College.

His hiring will obviously dictate who the final defensive assistants will be – i.e., LB/DL coaches who he has worked with or can work with, and who share the same defensive philosophy.

Btw, the Boston College DC was named 2015 AFCA’s Assistant Coach of the Year
    (http://www.bcinterruption.com/2015/12/8/9871368/dc-don-brown-named-afca-assistant-coach-of-the-year-2015)

  45. shadow December 9, 2015 1:26 pm

42: Feel the same way. When I heard Sam Slom say words to the effect that UH can find any good football Coordinator assistant for around $75K, it just goes to show how out of touch & ignorant some these legislators really are. Needless to say, his credibility went down the toilet w/ me.

  46. PONO December 9, 2015 1:32 pm

Isaac Choy is a complete idiot.

  47. bowwar December 9, 2015 1:34 pm

Alot of those part-time residents who own those Ka’anapali Coast mansions are mega-rich mainlanders…….including the lady who donated that $7 million.

  51. BigFan December 9, 2015 2:13 pm

I always wondered about Issac Choy’s performance. It’s surprising he doesn’t support UH more being that the school is in his district. He’s also an accountant so he should be able to scrutinize the “going ons” at UH but he comes across being arrogant at times. Maybe he wants to be another Donna Kim, lol. I’ve always believed that UH should be a focal point for the state and it’s not been that way since John Burns. Maybe the voters need to vote Choy out of office.

  52. Old School Dave December 9, 2015 2:30 pm

Rep. Isaac Choy is not a UH grad, if memory serves me correctly. Same with Donna Mercado-Kim (WSU). I heard that UHPA wanted Choy voted out of office and dreamed him as not receptive or supportive to the needs of the University.

If Coach Rolovich can land DC Kevin Lemma, that would be a major accomplishment with the salary cap for assistants at UH (less than Chow’s assistants). However, I would assume that Lemma is earning upwards of over $200,000 as a position coach, if not more at BC. That would be half of what the HC earns at UH.

UH needs a different approach in garnering donors from the corporate world and wealthy residents here. Maybe UH is not reaching out the “right way” to these people. When a student assistant calls me at dinner time asking for more money that I already donated (I give what I can), well, it seems……..

  53. Old School Dave December 9, 2015 2:32 pm

That should be “deemed” and not dreamed regarding Rep. Choy. No can type.

Was there any explanation as to what exactly happened to DE Luke Shawley. I read somewhere that he had to leave school due problems with financial aid. Wasn’t he on athletic scholarship? Very odd.

  56. winning December 9, 2015 3:40 pm

Wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Issac Choy was voted out next session. Choy’s opponent should emphasize his stance that he does not like athletics and the school. Perhaps he never played sports at all or maybe only 2nd or 3rd string and became very bitter. Or maybe he was a poor student that just got by in school-could be a bunch of stuff. Just vote em out of office!! Same with Sam Slom who is usually full of hot air and goes Pffffttt! once in awhile.

  57. Balko December 9, 2015 3:55 pm

Re. Luke Shawley, my understanding was he failed or failed to complete an off season class and was required to reimburses the cost of the class. He refused (some say due to lack of funds) thus UH said he was not eligible to play football.

Allegedly, Chow backed him up by asserting that he need not repay the cost, but UH prevailed.

It was unclear which “UH” was responsible for making that call (i.e., Foundation, AD, Upper Campus).

  58. Balko December 9, 2015 4:20 pm

I wouldn’t hang your hat on any state representative losing an election; it just doesn’t happen. Unless they are retiring, sick, or someone finds a body in the kick space of their desk and the representative standing over them with a smoking gun, they aren’t going anywhere.

Remember the last go around: Hawaii Legislature: Most Incumbents Win by Wide Margins: http://www.civilbeat.com/2014/11/hawaii-legislature-only-a-few-new-faces/

  59. NotNasti December 9, 2015 4:31 pm

Balko is correct. As an undergraduate and law student, I’ve worked for various legislators and commissions. Most, if not all decisions are made in closed door policy committee sessions, where the leadership instructs the committee chairs which bills to pass out and which bills to kill. I now find myself on the short end of the stick, having to testify as a legislative liason for my office the last 15 years. Head, brick wall, bang . . . bang . . . bang.

  60. NotNasti December 9, 2015 4:32 pm

It’s the same guys, over and over. I wish people would vote in the candidate that closely reflects their values, instead of voting by name recognition.

  61. WWF December 9, 2015 4:45 pm

    60. If the UHPA would endorse candidates that support UH, then work with the UH Alumni from recent to years past, together we could organize and block vote. Change is possible.

  62. Balko December 9, 2015 4:57 pm

    Endorsements won’t help: people don’t vote…

  65. Flyng1431 December 9, 2015 5:39 pm

I saw the press release by UH stating that Brian Smith was hired as “an offensive assistant coach” What is an offensive assistant coach? What are the duties of an offensive assistant coach? I assume Rolo still needs to hire and OC and QB coach but I have never heard of the term offensive assistant coach used before. Hoping someone can clarify the position. Thanks.

  66. Old School Dave December 9, 2015 6:06 pm

Ballots: thanks for that info on Shawley. Too bad it came to that.

Word is that Anae, Atuaia, Beck, and the Oline coach will be going to Virginia with Mendenhall. Anae’s blunt personality didn’t appeal to the BYU brass as far as a head coach was concerned.

  69. A-House December 9, 2015 6:44 pm

Naole and Abe were retained, but did ST say what they will coach next year?

Did I miss it again or do we assume it will be OL and DBs.

Lempa was a DC at UH back when? did his “D” allow many point, but only reason UH won was because the “O” score more points? Is my memory bad?

  70. kapakahi December 9, 2015 6:45 pm

    #64,

Maybe now UH get chance……with Bradlee Anae, Hirkley Latu, Wayne Talaupapa, and/or Manaia Atuaia.

    Hmmm…….

  71. WWF December 9, 2015 6:46 pm

    62. Wouldn’t a low voter turnout make it easier to organize a block vote?

  72. A-House December 9, 2015 6:51 pm

How does Brian smith qualify to be a RB coach when he played center for UH?

    What connection am I missing?

Several times I sat on an 06, full bird, selection committee and I railed against an “admin” type being recommended for an intelligence or operations 06 slot because the applicant was in the inner “command” circle — the President of the Board, a Brig General, was unhappy with my comments. I was loud with my comments and my fellow committee members may have had the same opinion, but did not say a word – ha, none were selected for the slot!

  73. A-House December 9, 2015 6:53 pm

  74. Bryson December 9, 2015 7:04 pm

One area that JJ and Miano could help in if they really wanted to would be on the fundraising side of things…both have alot of connections to businesses if they went and tried to fundraise on Rolo’s behalf that would help a ton

#69……..coaching is about teaching. Some people are just great teachers…….no matter what position.

Kenny Niumatalolo once coached TEs even though he never played TE. Ron Lee coached WRs. Aaron Price was a PK in college but coached QBs. Buzzy Preston coached db’s….wrs….and rbs at various coaching stops. No forget Mouse Davis who coached Wr….qbs…and even was an OC…..even though he only like 5-5.

If Smith is a good coach he will do well at rb coach.

If Rolo can hire Lempa as DC at out salary limits, that is a great hire.
The top DC’s at P5 schools are now earning more than Rolovich as HC. In conferences like the SEC and the Pac 12 the DC’s can earn over $700,000 (Sitake is earning $763,000 at Oregon State as DC). This trend moves into conferences like the MWC since competition for good DC’s at the non P5 conferences starts to overlap with some of the lower tier P5 schools.

ST mentioned Lempa’s name, it doesn’t mean he’s interested or even a good choice. Kind of like how Jasper was labeled as a candidate when he had no interest in the job. Lempa would be another instance of trying to move forward by looking back at something that didn’t work.

I think it’s a pretty good hire hopefully our offense will be able to match the production of Eastern Washington over the past few years,I think this also opens a recruiting pipeline into the PNW…

#35: Old School, Lahainaluna was lucky with the part time resident. But Lahainaluna took many years of volunteer experts in the community and worked hard and free to get the stadium. DOE did nothing, except put their stamp to open it. Gosh, I remember coaching track in the 80’s and we had to clear track of debris all the time. Don’t know if UH have that kind of committment and experts willing to give up their time free for many years
