Game Day: Rolo, ULM, Australia

Yes, yes, I know Louisiana-Monroe and Hawaii are playing on senior night but, let’s face it, UH has shifted the topic to … Rolo!

A look at the hiring:

> The field: This was one of those tests in which there were no wrong answers. The five finalists — Nick Rolovich, June Jones, Rich Miano, Brian Norwood and Rich Ellerson — are former UH players with strong Hawaii ties. Ellerson has been a head coach and co-creator of the famed Desert Swarm defense that once vaulted Arizona to No. 1 nationally. Norwood has been instrumental in the success of programs from Penn State to Baylor. Jones is an offensive genius. Miano is a sharp coach who would have boosted fund-raising. Rolovich is sharp, innovative and, as former UH receiver Greg Salas said, “relatable.”

> The style: AD David Matlin said he went into the search process with an open mind. He also had analyzed what worked in UH’s football history. In the past 30 years, the Warriors were at their best when they ran an offense that was different from the majority — the triple option under Bob Wagner/Paul Johnson and the four-wide under Jones/Ron Lee/Rolovich. Rolovich had some of the best mentors — City College of SF legend George Rush, Jones, Lee, Mouse Davis and Chris Ault. Rolovich also picked up a lot during his time in the Arena Football League. As Matlin said: “I think great leaders come from great mentors.” Matlin was impressed with the different styles of offenses that Rolovich can run.

> The timing: A former UH assistant coach referred to the “Dino Babers Effect.” Babers was a candidate for the UH coaching job four years ago, just as Kenny Niumatalolo was 16 years ago. Both were highly regarded assistant coaches. UH passed on both. By the time Chow was fired, Niumatalolo (the highest paid federal employee) was out of UH’s range. So, too, was Babers, who is on track for a power-5 conference head coaching job. All signs point to Rolovich becoming a very good head coach. In the buy low/sell high strategy, if UH waited for the next opening, Rolovich would have been on to bigger and better jobs. It’s easy to see Rolo having a long career at UH.

> The selection: Four years ago, everybody claimed to pick Chow. Now, everybody is like: “It was your idea.” This time, there is no debate. Matlin is claiming full ownership of the selection.

> Q factor: In marketing, there is the Q factor that rates popularity. Everybody likes Rolo. If you don’t like Rolo, then something is wrong with you. After Jones was told he would not be hired, he sent us this note: “Rolo is one of my favorite players I ever coached. He will do an outstanding job for the university and our state.”

The last time Louisiana-Monroe played here, it was known as Northeast Louisiana. But that’s not what you remember. You remember the Warhawks’ game-winning, hook-and-ladder (hook-and-lateral?) play.

Yep, the Warriors will be playing Down Under to open the 2016 season.

Sure, it will be a tough start to open with back-to-back road games in Sydney and then Ann Arbor. But it should boost recruiting in that country for all sports, and, let’s face, it’s an awesome trip.

Hmmmm, Road Warriors Unite! Sydney or Ann Arbor or Both!?!?

  3. justsomeguy November 28, 2015 8:13 am

To all those crying because JJ didn’t get the job. Suck it up.

To all those professing NR will only get 4-6 wins a year for the next for years…….
I don’t know what games YOU have been watching, but that would be a lot better than we have been doing….PLUS that’s “to be expected” with a new coach, we LITERALLY all know this. You’re not saying anything intelligent.

Every candidate has their strengths and weaknesses. You have to make the best of what you have. Nick is young and will be able to connect with recruits in a very different way than Chow, lets hope he uses that to his advantage. He has a fantastic offensive pedigree, and despite my lack of enthusiasm for JJ as a head coach, the man knows football and I’m sure Nick learned a great deal from him.

My only request now is that we SPEND THE MONEY on the best defensive coordinator we can find. There are usually VERY HUNGRY young position coaches out there ready and willing to take on a new challenge at a D1 school, filling the assistant spots won’t be easy, but won’t be tremendously hard either. The defensive coordinator is truly where UH needs to “put it’s money where it’s mouth is”. If they want to be competitive SPEND THE DANG MONEY.

A winning program will likely triple the revenue of the program this year, that in itself justifies the increase in budget, in fact I would argue that it’s counter intuitive as well as just bad economics to try to run a program on a bare minimum budget. Now, I’m aware UHM isn’t the wealthiest school, I’m not looking for Alabama results here, just better than what we’ve had.

    Sorry for the novel.

  4. Maddog50 November 28, 2015 8:17 am

A lot of good buzz including the final game. Here’s hoping that the local candidates get on board either in the background or another role and pitch in someway to Nicks success. We certainly need fundraising marketing and fan support along with doing the right thing from the legislature and the school. Me I’m getting drunk on Illinois Championship games-4 of them along with a full slate of college games going downtown,to eat and back in time for the Warrior game-definitely going to boost my efforts for Na Koa this coming year!!!! Sorry for posting so much but I just can’t get enough of my Warrior fix-

  5. Shoko November 28, 2015 8:22 am

Sydney should be a better draw attendance-wise compared the the last two bowls in Melbourne which drew 16,000 and 8,000. If not mistaken, the Olympic Stadium is about a half hour drive from Sydney’s business and tourist district.

Rolo’s lower base pay should allow for a better salary range for his coordinators. A lot of former head coaches have taken roles as coordinators at other programs and have been successful like Dave Christensen and Lane Kiffen. If JJ is not ready to give up the game and not worried about running the show, I think taking a position as coordinator could be of benefit not just of the school but all the JJ supporters who wanted him to be the next head coach.

  6. kev-1 November 28, 2015 8:25 am

#3 … You’re right about the DC hire. I hope Rolo has a good one lined up.

  7. kev-1 November 28, 2015 8:26 am

Game day!!! Let’s hope the seniors go out on a good note.

  8. Da Punchbowl Kid November 28, 2015 8:47 am

Good luck to the Warriors tonight. I hope we can send the Seniors out with a win. We owe them a debt of gratitude.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  9. al November 28, 2015 8:47 am

#3…this must be the second edition of your novel. I think I read the first printing.

  10. al November 28, 2015 8:50 am

There’s no way JJ will be on staff.
    Nor will Miano.

I’d rather see Cav come in as associate head coach and run the online.

  11. al November 28, 2015 8:53 am

If I were running the marketing program I’d be announcing and selling season tickets at Monday’s presser.

  12. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 8:53 am

I hate the Rolo and Babers comparison.

One coach has 30 years of coaching experience at different schools building all types of relationships with different types of coaches.

Then you have a coach with less than 10 years of experience with marginal success as a OC.

Maybe it works out but Hawaii just took a huge gamble with another OC with minimal experience. Nevada offense has gone downhill since Rolo took over and hasn’t proven he can recruit a QB to fit what he wants to do. Cody Fajardo was a huge talent inherited by Rolo who Hawaii failed to offer out of high school and his numbers got worse as he got older.

  13. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2015 8:55 am

If I had to guess, I think Naeole and Elimimian will be retained.

  14. Da Punchbowl Kid November 28, 2015 8:55 am

Like AD Matlin said, the future for UH football looks bright. With just a few more key pieces added to the puzzle, I believe we will have the best possible scenario for the coaching changes.

Young Mr. Rolovich has a tremendous opportunity here. Best wishes to him, along with full support from our house.

  15. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 8:57 am

    3. What exactly are Rolos strengths besides being young, hungry, and he’s very likable? He’s had 1 good season calling plays with NFL talent at Hawaii. But can he recruit that talent here? Does he know enough good coaches in the community to assemble a good Staff? I don’t remember him being a good recruiter. Here or at Nevada.

Biggest decision in program history and we take the biggest long shot. Geez I hope I’m wrong

  16. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 8:57 am

    13. Naeole is the very one who let this team unravel even more and stopped recruiting all together. Not sure about that one.

  17. Da Punchbowl Kid November 28, 2015 8:59 am

    #13 – Stephen –

I hope that is the case. I believe in the Ka’a’awa guy and Elimimian brings skill and connection to the mix.

  18. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 8:59 am

Plain and simple…. Naeole has recruited poorly and was every bit a part of the problem of hawaiis struggles. Being an NFL player doesn’t mean you’re a good coach.

  19. kev-1 November 28, 2015 9:02 am

#16… I kind of agree about Naeole. Since taking over, he has kind of had an “F everybody” attitude.

  20. Andrew November 28, 2015 9:06 am

I think he should only keep elimimian. I hope Rolo’s success with offense is a lot different than it was at Nevada lately. He wasn’t exactly lighting it up there. I really hope he works out though. It just makes me cringe sometimes hearing them go on and on about how the biggest reasons for the fire are “young” and “cheap”. I get it that we are strapped for cash but still. That aside Im excited to see what Rolo can do to turn this program around and who will be in his staff.

  21. kev-1 November 28, 2015 9:07 am

    Re: Rolo is a gamble

For sure. However, people say he is real smart. Hopefully smart enough to know that he needs an experienced supporting cast.

And I’m not sure we know enough about Rolo as a recruiter to know how he does there. Then again, some know a lot more about recruiting then me.

  22. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:08 am

    19. He’s been horrible. He’s completely failed in recruiting department. All of our QBs take too many hits because our O line can’t pass protect and struggle with blitzes and stunts. Same results every week. Our best O linemen have been prior staff recruits or Powell recruits that were recruited to play D but O line needed the help.

    Is Brian Derby available ??

  23. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:10 am

    20. Completely agree… None of the other coaches are worth keeping.

But Rolo is so inexperienced that i don’t think he has enough coaching connections in community to bring us a completely new staff

  24. kev-1 November 28, 2015 9:10 am

And remember, Rolo is being hired as the HC, not the OC. While he will likely have control of the offense, there are other areas we need him to fix. That’s what I’m looking for. A HC that can repair the psyche of this team, repair the culture.

  25. cocobean November 28, 2015 9:10 am

Rolo was not my choice but I’ll support him 100%. Everyone who claims to be a fan of UH football should rally behind him we got no other option. Don’t take a wait and see approach to attending games or making whatever large or small contribution you can make. The reality to me is this is not a rebuilding project it’s much greater it’s a resurrection of a program that’s flat lining. It won’t be easy it probably won’t be quick when you look at next years schedule. Rolo is no Messiah so he’ll need all of us to help him.

He is Matlin’s choice. I’ve always stated I like Matlin and would trust him in picking who HE feels is the right guy. Rolo comes in through the front door not through a side door opened by those shadowy behind the scences power brokers. That’s why I like Matlin. He’s cutting the strings that has manipulated the UHAD for years.

  26. Old School Dave November 28, 2015 9:12 am

I wonder if this DC would consider UH? His defense is #5 nationally at the FCS level.

  27. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:12 am

    21. He recruited Ikaika Woolsey to be Moniz replacement. He’s whiffed on more QBs at Nevada. Smart is one thing, leading a roster of 90+ kids and managing a bunch of assistant coaches is another.

Dabo Swinney isn’t a football genius. He’s a excellent leader though.

  28. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2015 9:14 am

    Re: Babers
Babers is exactly the same coach/person he was eight months ago. And eight months ago he would have applied for the UH job.
But now that same coach/person didn’t apply. The market changes.
People always talk about UH getting a good, young coach. Rolo is a good, young coach.
You can’t look at a person now. You have to look at what he’ll become in a few years.
It took 30 years to build H-3. But they should have made it a three-lane highway because the population will grow.
We can gripe about the rail. But we’re probably making a mistake building only a rail line. We’re going to need a rail system — to all areas of the island — because the population will grow and the Hawaii’s geography won’t.

  29. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:16 am

    25. I support. But as a uh athletics customer, I will still voice my opinions after all the horrible decisions made over the past 7 years.

Matlin is going the cheap, young inexperienced route and that has me nervous in all our sports.. Basketball was going to be fine this year regardless of coach. But who knows how the future will be when ganot had to recruit

  30. kev-1 November 28, 2015 9:17 am

#27…You are correct about how leading a team being difficult. That is where I have a gut feeling Rolo can succeed. Unfortunately, the only thing my gut is good for is stuffing.

Yeah, Woolsey didn’t pan out. But he never quite got the chance to run Rolo’s system did he? Still, I don’t think he is accurate enough for a run an shoot hybrid offense.

  31. Da Punchbowl Kid November 28, 2015 9:18 am

Nae’ole was doing the equivalent of battlefield triage when he became interim HC. He made changes and tried his best. I don’t see how that equates to an “F everybody” attitude. A more accurate reckoning would involve seeing him run his own program and see if that impression is made. Not to mention, some of the best to ever coach the game had at least a little of that “F everybody” attitude. It takes courage and a thick skin to be an HC at any level.

I am interested to see what a Kahuku graduate with his background can do as recruiter on the North Shore.

While I can see the points you make, at this time, if in fact he is retained, we need to give him every benefit of the doubt. Time will tell the tale.

  32. DoubleB November 28, 2015 9:18 am

ST I hope it comes to pass that Naeole and Elimimian are retained. I have not posted here too much in the Chow Era. I did keep my season tickets and go to all the games (except the last one) throughout his tenure. I’m personally very happy with the hire and believe Rolo will succeed.
For what its worth Jeezy33 I believe Rolo wanted to recruit QB Fajardo while he was Coaching UH. I hear you on the Babers / Rolo comparison, but I believe Rolo will find success as HC.

  33. Shoko November 28, 2015 9:20 am

Babers is interviewing with UCF along with a couple assistants from McElwain’s staff. I think he has a good chance to get that gig.

  34. mytake November 28, 2015 9:21 am

Rolo must have impressed the AD enough to cut off the search and name him HC. Also helps HC to start recruiting coaches and players.

  35. Shoko November 28, 2015 9:22 am

Rolo should start with a clean slate from Chow’s past hires. That was Chow’s problem when he was here.

I don’t Naeole has the temperament and probably make it difficult to build chemistry and get along with the rest of the coaching staff.

  36. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:23 am

    28. How are you going to compare a coach who has succeeded at multiple schools for 30 years vs a coach who has had decent results at 2 mid major schools ???

You’re comparing Outback Steakhouse to Mortons.

    Rolo- Nevada and Hawaii

Babers- Purdue, Sdsu, Arizona, Baylor, eastern Illinois.

If you’re saying Babers would have applied 8 months ago, the real problem is Hawaii not firing Chow 10 months ago. Decision to keep Chow lost a lot more money than it would have been to pay him off. All the fans even knew it

  37. justsomeguy November 28, 2015 9:25 am

    Jeezy –

I agree with you, Naeole was a part of the problem, and just because he was a very good player doesn’t mean anything when it comes to coaching.

As far as Nick goes, he IS a gamble, but as far as those 5 candidates were concerned, I think Matlin made the right choice. Nick hasn’t proven himself to be a savant recruiter, however, neither is Chris Peterson, and we all know how that went. Peterson is a phenomenal coach, and realized the recruiting limitations of Boise St, so he recruited guys with character and work ethic who he knew he and his staff could “coach up” so to speak. Chip Kelly did the same thing, however Chips recruiting ability is elite.

I’m not saying Rolo is on the level of either of them, but he COULD pull a PJ Fleck and distinguish himself, and his staff. He needs to take advantage of his youth and bring something fresh to Hawaii football, and to the players he evaluates. Jeezy, you and I BOTH know evaluation is CRITICAL. That’s were I feel Rolo has to make his name.

  38. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:26 am

    31. What benefit of the doubt ???? Have you seen his recruits since he’s been on staff??? He let Micah Kapoi walk by telling Chow to gray shirt him.. How’d that work out??? Then we bring in Austin Webb who no other fbs school wanted.

  39. Balko November 28, 2015 9:28 am

Not a good sign that Nevada hasn’t improved on offensive efficiency over the Rolo years (via ESPN NCAA Team efficiency, http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics/teamratings/_/tab/efficiency):

Stranger: I had a lot of information. That’s what makes me good at guessing.

  41. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:29 am

    37. At the end of the day, I wasn’t thrilled with an of the final 5. And lot of people I know felt the same way. Which concerns me a lot. Either no one even wants to coach here, or Matlin isn’t competent.. Either scenarios wouldn’t be good. You would think a joe salavea, kalani sitake, Dave aranda would have been interested.

  42. kev-1 November 28, 2015 9:30 am

DPK… I have mentioned before that I liked how Naeole came out on fire with attitude upon getting named interim coach. However, he should have made his coaching changes then. Not every week. His approach was good for morale initially, but has hurt morale in the long run. When everyone wonders if they are in the group labeled as quitters, that doesn’t go over well. Get rid of your quitters right away, and build up the rest. Don’t label quitters every week. He has named a few that he thinks play hard. What happens when your name is not praised along with the few? You fall in with the rest.

  43. Come on, man! November 28, 2015 9:32 am

“How are you going to compare a coach who has succeeded at multiple schools for 30 years vs a coach who has had decent results at 2 mid major schools ???”

maybe there are other factors that were considered during the hiring and vetting process that made rolo stand out as a candidate. we don’t know how matlin and his advisors made his decision and what they specifically looked at. also, being a good young up and coming coach has more to do than just statistics in a vacuum (which are the only things that we as fans are privy to).

we need to stop pretending that we know everything and all factors of the decision making process because we really don’t. we only know what ST reveals to us (and to be honest, he doesn’t reveal much).

i think rolo is a weird pick, but hey, it is what it is. and if we have 3 seasons of 4-6 wins, i mean, my god. that would be a HUGE step up and a good foundation than whatever norm chow did for the last 4 years.

  44. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2015 9:34 am

    Jeezy:
    Who would you take?
Eastern Washington guy? He wasn’t interested.
    Babers? Not interested.
    Ivin Jasper? Not interested.
    Les Miles? Not available yet.
    Rolo will be fine.
Somebody on the committee asked me to pick my wish hire. I said Herman Edwards. Well, he’s not interested, either.

  45. justsomeguy November 28, 2015 9:35 am

I was surprised as well that Sitake wasn’t in the mix, but I’m not in Matlin’s shoes and I’m not going to judge a situation that I don’t fully know.

The speed at which this got done DOES give me hope for Matlin’s competence though. Getting anything done quickly in Hawaii is quite the task.

  46. DoubleB November 28, 2015 9:35 am

    43- Amen.

  47. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:35 am

    42. U don’t throw people under the bus period. Aaron Price was a bigger disaster and even then Norm Chow didn’t throw him under the bus or any of the other coaches he let go. You don’t just can a coach and make him look bad with 1 game left.

  48. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2015 9:36 am

Aranda, Sitake and Salavea were not interested.
    Aranda never applied.
Hey, he turned down an opportunity to be the DC at LSU. His family likes Wisconsin.

  49. justsomeguy November 28, 2015 9:36 am

    Hahaha Stephen…..that’s great stuff.

I agree though, Rolo’s got the keys now. We need to do our part as fans and support Hawaii football in any way we can.

  50. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:39 am

    44. Based on that list, I’d settle with Jones with the hope Miano can be associate HC and bring back a solid walk on program and connecting with the local recruits again. Jones may not be a long term answer but i feel like he’ll give his all for at least first 2 years. I’m worried about right now. Future doesn’t exist if we can’t fix our current issues. Selling tickets is a problem. And I didn’t even want jones initially so that goes to show how unimpressive the final 5 are.

  51. Old Diver November 28, 2015 9:39 am

Any new hire is a gamble. At least Rolo knows what he is getting into which gives him a lot better chance to succeed than Chow. Looking forward to next season, in the meantime will be cheering on the Warriors at tonight’s game.

  52. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:40 am

    48. And that just goes to show how unattractive this job is right now.

  53. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:41 am

And I apologize that when it comes to UH athletics, the well be fine approach does not apply to me.

  54. A-House November 28, 2015 9:41 am

jus be sure to bring your own bucket of dirt cause it’s concrete below the synthetic turf

  55. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:43 am

    43. Remove “advisors” from your statement. I’ve heard from multiple people that Ganot and Rolo were Matlins picks before even starting the interview processes. Which is why Benjy was so pissed. He just better get it right.

  58. Makai November 28, 2015 9:49 am

Rolo was a good hire for what we can afford. What will make Rolo a great hire is his assistant coaches. Hope he chooses wisely. I wonder what kind of connections he has being so young and only stops at UH and Nevada.

  59. Come on, man! November 28, 2015 9:49 am

my expectations for rolo are the following:

terrible first season (like 2-10 or something norm chow-esque) ESPECIALLY given the scheduling for next season with a road game against cal in australia and then a road game at ann arbor. i know non-conference schedules are made years in advance, but this doesn’t set up rolo for success.

slightly better second season, like 4 wins, hopefully.

6-7 wins and hawaii bowl berth in the third season.

if he does this, he needs to go to the college coaching hall of fame and eat for free at every hawaii restaurant for the rest of his life.

  60. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:50 am

    56. Yep, and that’s all I’m asking for here… I’m not pissed by the Rolo hire. I’m just venting why him? He might pan out. He’s hungry for sure. But this is a huge jump for somewhat questionable success.

I would be pretty upset if Naeole is retained though. I’m tired of his childish, I’m tougher than you antics that have just backfired on him and made him look worse. The fact that he said he was going to stop recruiting on the Bobby curran show just irritated me more and we’re just letting recruits walk. Not exactly smart

  61. George November 28, 2015 9:50 am

To you chow obsessive haters, he is now coaching the Chargers QB. He has moved on, as you should too. And JJ has gracefully acknowledged. Move on. Go bows.

  62. Bigislandkurt November 28, 2015 9:51 am

    Back to da beat!
Fair weather as I may be..
I wanted JJ. For all obvious reasons.
But I’m going to roll with Rolo.
Here’s to the new chapter! ‘Eo Coach Nick!

  63. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 9:51 am

    58. Don’t sip the kool aid too hard.. His assistant coaches can also make him a bad hire. Open mind approach.

  64. cocobean November 28, 2015 9:58 am

#29. Everyone’s thoughts here are opinions. #55. Why didn’t you share what multiple people told you before this. It would have cut down on the suspense and drama filling those two positions created. How are those multiple people connected to the UHAD to know what Matlin was thinking. He should plug those leaks.

  65. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 10:00 am

    64. Because not everything I hear becomes 100% true. Especially when you read a lot of people saying June jones is the lead candidate. It makes me question what people I know tell me.

  66. cocobean November 28, 2015 10:05 am

#65. Do any of the people you know know Matlin?

  67. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2015 10:07 am

My “guess” is Naeole and Elimimian will be retained.

  68. Waterman November 28, 2015 10:08 am

Jeezy, I’m not trying to start an argument, but I’m curious as to where you got your recruiting information on coach Naeole? I’ve spoke to coach about his OL recruiting and can tell you that he was VERY upset with Chow the past couple of years for not allowing him to offer a few OL prospects he really wanted including Kapoi. I believe that his scholly went to a certain local LB. If Chow nixes his offers, then wouldn’t his only other option to offer a greyshirt…….

  69. A-House November 28, 2015 10:08 am

it appears that the “shadowry” powers never stood up for their “mandated” selection for Uh football HC after forcing upper campus to pick their coach who fell apart

will they now use their shadowry power to pick up the financial loss? bring back the fan support?

how did Matlin shake off their influence? or, did he?

  70. cocobean November 28, 2015 10:09 am

  72. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 10:14 am

Can we fundraise to get Pat Hill as our OL coach? He’ll land us some dominant big OL.
Bring in Tata from Kahuku and get Hirkley Latu and Bradlee Anae on board.
Abe to keep the so cal pipeline.
    Need a Texas connection.
I’m sure Rolo knows nor cal well.

  73. Maddog50 November 28, 2015 10:14 am

Even with the abysmal record and the injuries….we will see if two of Coach Naoele’s prize students warrant any league Kudos. Clarke Allen and Eli I think we’re our best performers. We will see if it is a shut out then it would be cause for concern. I do believe that some of the linebacker and db alignment and assignment were not making a whole lot of sense. I would love to see us go back to a even fron with recruiting bulk and have all along felt KT should be a field side DE. I think we may see a package tonight that is exactly that. We have nothing to lose and in some situ ions it is a pretty simple gap assignment aggressive man coverage and much tighter defensive alignment. If the qb is the guy I think it is it should be a field day on def. I shave been wrong so often My luck has to change!!!!

  74. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2015 10:17 am

  75. A-House November 28, 2015 10:18 am

    ST:

your #67 – I hope not as they, IMHO, have not been effective coaches to transmit their knowledge and skills to their players or the players did not care what the coach was teaching – in Mr Holland’s Opera, it was said a student does not fail, it’s the teacher who failed

it’s disappointing as I thought Abe would really turn the DBs around – not so

  76. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2015 10:19 am

Clarke should be credited with playing out of position.
His future should be at guard or center.
Allen was already in the program when Naeole was hired. Tupai was a Powell recruit.
Naeole’s legacy, soup to nuts, as they say, will be Eperone Moananu.

  77. cocobean November 28, 2015 10:20 am

A-House. Maybe those “shadowy figures” are the very ones responsible our financial losses and loss of fan interest. No one can really say for sure but it seems to me our previous Athletic Directors were beholden to listen to outside of the Department influences when making decisions. Matlin to me is the first since Stan the Man to give the appearance that he runs the Department. He’s doing what the Athletic Director should be…the master of his domain. And yes I realize this is just my own opinion.

  78. Tony November 28, 2015 10:21 am

Congratulations to Nick Rolovich. Now if he can bring in the same excitement and interest to the program as Tony Sanchez has done at UNLV he’ll be fine. He is the HC so he needs to clean-house and pick his own staff that he can work with. He needs an enthusiastic, passionate, and dedicated staff willing to take program and turn it around. Forget about all the “former” coaches. They had their chances. He needs to surround himself with assistants who will have his same philosophy. Maybe he’ll be OC but he needs a good DC that can defend the type of offenses used in the MWC. The Mianos, Lees, etc. are all old school. Got to get himself new, innovative coaches. As for recruiting, he needs to get those who can play right away. Rebuilding with youth is good, but he needs to balance it out and win some games right away.

  79. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2015 10:22 am

Pat Hill would only come here as a head coach, and he wasn’t interested in the UH head coaching job.

  80. Gsky November 28, 2015 10:23 am

Tune in to ESPN2 at 5:45pm (or set your DVR) to see what our new head coach’s offense might look like, when Nevada faces San Diego St.

  81. A-House November 28, 2015 10:24 am

    Michigan vs Ohio State:

1st Michigan punt – beauty that bounces on the 2 yard line, but the Michigan special teams player who batted the ball back into the playing field was standing in the end zone and he tried to argue with the “ref” that it was OK.

“brain fart” – maybe, but did the special teams coach remind his players before the punt to remain in the field of play to bat/recover the ball? don’t need to be a player to know this!!!

  82. hossana November 28, 2015 10:26 am

Seriously wanted JJ to be the next H.C. as he would have implemented an exciting brand of football for our players but I can live with Rolo who has been immersed in both the pistol and 4 wide receiver spread so that’s not the problem. The problem is getting quality people on staff …people who can aggressively recruit not only local players but quality players on the mainland, also. I would strong hesitate to retain Naeole as he was part of the problem as his offensive line the past couple yrs. was just terrible…..let’s be honest…..his line was responsible for the QB’S running for their life, getting sacked or being hurried in their throws and getting out of step during the opposing team blitzes etc….there is no question on that part as even some of the h.s. coaches i know have complained that they’re surprised as the the lack of efficiency of the offensive line etc…..oh, well…the new H.C. should just clean house and bring in a new staff……..top to bottom……..nothing more and nothing less.

  83. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2015 10:26 am

It’s not a great coaching job.
The on-campus facilities actually are pretty nice. The locker room is nice. Ching field is decent. (The grass field was nice until they started piling that mulch on the side, and it became infested with flies. By the way, spray “Off” on yourself before tomorrow’s luau.)
But Aloha Stadium is falling apart. The stadium lockers old, there’s no sideline luxury boxes (although they did fix up the baseball press box nicely).
But, mostly, there’s not enough money from the Legislature. And every time somebody screws up, DMK summons the circus for another round of hearings.

  84. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 10:27 am

Since we’re throwing out names and former Hawaii warriors. Pisa Tinoisamoa would make a interesting LB coach candidate.. Everyone loves Ulbrich who Hawaii can’t afford but Pisa was probably better and this could be a good step for him.. Open up San Diego pipeline.

  85. Old School Dave November 28, 2015 10:30 am

#71. That is a thought worth exploring. What are the issues involved in raising funds to supplement what is budgeted for Rolo’s staff. It’s a given much of Rolo’s success is dependent upon who he can attract given the salaries he can offer.

I really wonder about the 5 finalist. None seemed like a home run hire by himself. But the thought keeps running through my mind – what if Rolo offered positions on his staff to the other finalist and a couple of them accepted.

  89. Old School Dave November 28, 2015 10:35 am

Off topic, but I didn’t realize that North Texas has a nice stadium that was built a few years ago with a capacity of just over 30,000. Hire the same construction crews that built the Ewa Wing of Ala Moana 🙂 ?

I would prefer that the entire OL play be the legacy of their coach rather than a single recruit

that’s why I liked the short, chubby OL coach who is still in the PAC 12.

why would UH agree to play a game in Australia and the next week fly to play Michigan? yes, I realize that they would “gain” a day, but the physical wear will hurt in Michigan

that’s even worse that playing Ohio State and Wisconsin 2 weeks apart! who gets the most $$$ out of this game? UH? Cal? or ESPN?

now, comes the big decision – do we go to Australia — come home — do laundry — they fly to Michigan in less that 36 hours? physical wear for all fans who will do this? maybe we can go to down under and Michigan for our 2 annual trips and forego Arizona?

3-Prong: you and Mrs up to this task???

    Guud morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

    E Komo mai Coach Rolo!

How would a coach keep recruiting if he can’t answer a recruits question on who the HC will be or is? Good to have put this baby to sleep so we can look at who we were trying to recruit and we can let them know it’s Rolo!
Got to get the staff together wiki wiki. Don’t know of a recruit who wants to just go to a school not knowing who he’ll be getting coached by.
Leave the future speculations to the fortune tellers. Work with what we have.

    Anyhoo, IMUA WARRIORS!

No coach, ever, can make a DB run faster nor be more athletic than he is. A persons IQ is born at the same time he is birthed.

A DB coach does not determine the scheme or system. The DC was calling the plays.

    Give Abe a break.

  93. Dano November 28, 2015 10:46 am

Kahuku Alum Nae’ole would give us an edge on possible Kahuku recruits as well.

  94. Hank November 28, 2015 10:47 am

I like the way Matlin made a decision and didn’t let administration boogle him down with obligatory gracious inputs. He’s taking responsibility, something that I sense has been lost since Stan Sheriff.

I don’t know if Rolo is going to work out…but at least the days of incessant screaming at refs, players and assistant coaches are over. Besides the losing, I was most troubled by that. Nick is young, and hungry for the long term. His youth and energy should should be an advantage in recruiting. He’s got a young family to support (4-kids including twins born in 2013). Also, his wife is from Maui …. if that ain’t motivation enough to make this job work I don’t know what is.

    Not logical.

  96. z November 28, 2015 10:49 am

I am guessing I am the only one who wanted George Rush when UH picked Chow. I figured then he would have kept Rolo as OC. I was looking at some assistant and thought that these may have a connection to Rolo. Brian Smith, Darnell Arceneaux, Keith Bhonapah,Craig Stutzmann,Rich Miano,Tony Tuioti,Abe Elimimian.

  97. Come on, man! November 28, 2015 10:50 am

pisa tinoisamoa? is he even coaching at the college level at all? you can’t have it both ways. we can’t be like “it’s ESSENTIAL to build a solid and experienced coaching staff for rolo to be successful!” and then be like “hey. let’s throw in some random names. what about pisa? i know he basically only has one year of high school coaching, but #yolo!”

  98. Maddog50 November 28, 2015 10:52 am

I hail from the great state of Illinois which is the number one financially stressed state every way you measure it. Football at the several colleges are not even remotely a concern because they are not the problem NIU, ISU, SIU WIU, and power 5 member U of I. 3 FCS schools and two FBS schools. They are either all doing well as far as football goes or on the rise. The money issues have nothing at all to do with the college football. I get so tired of the same old discussion when it has already been demonstrated UH athletics already generates 7 million plus in tax revenue and these nitwits don’t want to invest in more! One thing for sure keep your day jobs state reps-money management is not in your futures-

  99. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 10:52 am

    91. Would?.. He’s been our coach the last 2 seasons. It hasn’t benefitted Hawaii one bit with Kahuku recruits.

  100. al November 28, 2015 10:52 am

88…the chubby OL coach is in Nebraska.

The 2016 schedule is part of the Ben Jay vendetta. He not being an athlete had no clue how taxing this expedition travels (2015 incl.) would be on the football team and the ardent fan like you and the Mrs. He was a bean counter, only that.

His limemen like him, respect him and want to play for him, and want him back.

The sun is shining bright, the boo-birds have (mostly) flown away.
Kifi and Al are posting more often and all’s right with the world!

A-HOUSE – you fly and spend a few days in Sydney – great place to visit.
You come home, take it easy for a few days and then fly to Ann Arbor.
Flight time to Sydney is about 10-hours
Flight time to Ann Arbor around six hours.
And you and the Mrs. are comparatively young.

I just came back from a trip – 20 hours (with change of planes).

I think it’s hilarious how everyone is saying spend the money on a DC. You can hire Nick Saban as the DC and UH will still struggle because we can’t recruit 3,4,5 star players and can’t keep Da best Local talent home. Until we do UH will have to out-score their opponents in every game.

By the way, what’s up with such tiny Halloween candy? When I was a kid …

And btw… if that is how you run a team, it is you who has no clue.

  117. mctruck November 28, 2015 11:43 am

My original thinking was that JJ was going to be HC and Rolo/OC; he would be groomed by JJ to become UH-HC in a few years.
However, I’m still excited with Matlin’s pick of Rolo. Maybe he can Hire JJ to assist as OC, or until such time which would be mutually agreed upon?
I am concerned on who takes over as the DC??

  119. Shoko November 28, 2015 11:58 am

Too bad UH doesn’t have a Lorenzo Fertitta to help fund assistant coaching salaries.

  120. Shoko November 28, 2015 12:00 pm

JJ hired Mouse as an assistant so I don’t see why JJ would be adverse to working with Rolo.

  121. Shoko November 28, 2015 12:02 pm

On the other board, I heard they’re offering Rolo a 3-year contract?

  122. Shoko November 28, 2015 12:04 pm

Anyway, Warriors head into the second half with a 41-40 lead against Texas Tech.

  123. Come on, man! November 28, 2015 12:06 pm

“JJ hired Mouse as an assistant so I don’t see why JJ would be adverse to working with Rolo.”

why are we assuming that rolo would actually want JJ to be his offensive coordinator? mouse davis is the godfather of the run and shoot. JJ’s entire offensive philosophy is the run and shoot. Therefore, JJ and mouse davis was a very good fit, because they are two brilliant offensive minds with a wealth of experience coaching and with their offensive scheme.

It’s not known whether Rolo is even interested in having the run and shoot as his offensive philosophy. if he wants to run some wacky spread option type of offense with prepackaged plays and vertical passing routes, having JJ as his offensive coordinator might not make very much sense.

  124. z November 28, 2015 12:13 pm

Mini Rolo? He,he,he. Sounds like new mascot.

  125. Shoko November 28, 2015 12:22 pm

    120. Good lord! Just talking out loud. This blog and every forum I’ve visited is filled with widespread assumptions and tongue-in-cheek comments. No need to take the comments so serious.

  126. Bryson November 28, 2015 12:26 pm

I find it funny that people forget Rolo was one of the best QB’S to come out of the R-n-S system,He’s proven what he can do when given control offensively…People complained about how JJ’S version of the R-n-S is obsolete well Rolo added his own wrinkle when he was the OC here so how about we just let the man put together his staff and coach a few games before we reserve judgement

  127. warriorsanddolphins November 28, 2015 12:32 pm

The main thing when you hire a coach is that he’s got to know the difficulty being in the middle of the pacific ocean is. By that i mean how hard its to bring in the blue chip recruit. You also have to take into consideration that most of the local blue chip players in Hawaii will choose to go to the mainland simply to explore what’s life like away from the islands. Then you have upper campus management and the state legislature that will give you very little support. When Norm Chow was hired, he didnt do any homework and thought he could get those huge linemen to come here and run a smash mouth pro set offense. The funny thing is he use to recruit in Hawaii when he was at BYU so he should of had some knowledge of how recruiting works but failed. June and i think Rolo knows this already but i think because we already hit rock bottom, Jones would of been the better candidate to get us back to respectability because he knows what it takes to be succesful here.

  128. Shoko November 28, 2015 12:34 pm

Couple years ago, I remember Polian and Rolo went to Philly and attended a seminar given by Chip Kelly so I wouldn’t be surprised Rolo picked up a few things during that visit (no-huddle, up-tempo, spread out of the pistol).

  129. Arcumfortis November 28, 2015 12:43 pm

Hard to know if hiring Rolo will turn out to be brilliant or a bust. But it is another bold move by Dave Matlin. I like Matlin more and more. He is willing to move ahead with his own vision and do it on a timely basis. No bowl game this year…..Chow is gone…….season ends tonight……new coach in place. It’s been awhile since we had this sort of efficient movement. Usually it’s the ponderous, inefficient and poorly conceived UH way. I like this better. I would love to know how the current players view Rolo as their new HC.

  130. NotNasti November 28, 2015 12:44 pm

Wow. Rolo has not even appeared for his Monday press conference, and already the detractors have brought their axes out to chop down the tree. They are setting it up for the “I told you so” moment. Do you secretly hope for Rolo to fail so that you can be right? Lets wait to see who his assistants will be, what kind of offensive/defensive philosophy he will have. I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion.

  131. graham November 28, 2015 12:53 pm

    Vavae Tata D-coordinator?

  132. graham November 28, 2015 12:55 pm

Maybe offer Sarkisian a chance be a volunteer assistant on the offense? Would probably never happen but an idea

  133. cocobean November 28, 2015 1:18 pm

Does anybody think during the interview Matlin didn’t ask Rolo who he would recruit to be on his staff? We can speculate all we want but the reality is we won’t know who else is coming on board till the announcements are made.

Oh course, Al’s little birdies may be the first to know.

I think Rolo will get a hold of whoever he wants to retain on the current stay as soon as he can. It wouldn’t be surprising if he’s already spoken to some of them.

For the number of times I’ve spoken here last night and today I will admit I gave away my tickets for tonight. It’s the first time in decades I won’t be at a home game. My excuse was I have tickets to the Wahine BB game. I’ll catch the game at my cousin’s house. First time I’ll be watching live PPV for a home game.

  136. papajoe2 November 28, 2015 1:47 pm

Did coach Chow have any say in the scheduling? Ohio State, Wisconsin, Boise, road games, all within a few weeks of each other. Next year, Cal and Michigan at Australia and Michigan back to back?

  137. nutmegger November 28, 2015 1:53 pm

I think Matlin made a timely and very perceptive choice with Rolo. I am in full support.

    A couple of thoughts:
    1) Fund raising – I think JJ and Tomey will want to make right by the program and will volunteer knock the doors and meet the shakers and makers for some bucks.
    2) Recruiting – we need a huge unpaid scouting group, the situation is dire. Should develop contact list of all old former Warrior players to be on the look-out for those hidden diamonds.
    3) Motivation – the mind set must be turned. How? sports psychiatrist?, meditation/visualization?, anything and everything must be used and tried what may work on one may not work on another.
    4) Game plan buy-in – actually this is directly linked to motivation. Remember “Believe”? Rolo’s enthusiasm could be key here.
    5) Administration – clearly he will need to rely on the support staff and Matlinfshould make all resources available.

  138. Whats up November 28, 2015 2:01 pm

I don’t know how I feel about Rolovich being hired as head coach. I am curious to see what kind of assistant coaches he will be in? I am skeptical about recruiting… I’m just not sure what kind of recruits Rolovich good name will bring to UH. I have doubts a ESPN top 300, 4 star recruit like Kennedy Tuilimaseali will commit to Rolovich as head coach at UH?

I guess Rolo could get Tony Tuioti back, he could recruit. And bring back Miano to run the Walk-on program, he was great at finding talent. But I’m still not sure what to think of this hire?

  139. kev-1 November 28, 2015 2:05 pm

If I was Rolo, I would call Naeole and say, “I’d like to keep you on staff if you do me a favor. I’ve seen Woolsey already. Play Reilly today so I can see what the QB situation I face is.”

  140. Deezy November 28, 2015 2:31 pm

I never post here but I have to chime in – what’s with all the Rolo hate? Seriously. If there was one candidate that I thought would be non-controversial, it would be Rolo. Who doesn’t love this guy? Sure he’s never been a HC before but you know what, neither was every legendary head coach before somebody took a chance on him. Give him a chance before you start flinging your feces at him, you animals. Jeez.

  141. MAKA November 28, 2015 2:34 pm

Kev-1. (136) Out of all the comments so far today (135) your’s is the only sane one.
Most of the know-it-all’s here is just waha, pure and simple.

  142. el burro sabio November 28, 2015 2:35 pm

Does Rolo have any kind of relationship with Vavae Tata? It’s like expecting Chow to keep assistants that he doesn’t know and was very wrong to expect of him.

I’ll speculate on a possible assistant that Rolo definitely knows – George Rush, to help his transition to head coach.

  143. z November 28, 2015 2:35 pm

Interesting how BYU put up 51 points on Utah St with a quarterback who came back from a LDS mission and was not there n the spring. How come we no can?

  144. Sangamon Keith November 28, 2015 2:40 pm

Reading the posts on this blog is real demoralizing due to the negativity that exudes from people who don’t know how much their comments detract from the future of the UH football program. Sure it’s their right … but most people know there’s a time and a place for their negativity. Now is a time to see the positives a new start … a clean slate where everything is possible. Venting because of a personal disappointment is not helpful or appropriate.

It’s not like a lot of schools haven’t been in this bad fans situation before. When I was a student at Oregon, Jerry Frei was fired because of the “idiot” assistants he had hired … you know guys like Johnny Robinson, Bruce Snyder, George Seifert and Gunther Cunningham. Fans hated those lousy assistants who obviously were never going to amount to much. After all, they had lost to the Beavers four years in a row.

So they were fired … despite having beat USC and UCLA in the same year for the first time in a decade. Sure they had recruited Dan Fouts and Bobby Moore (aka Ahmad Rashad), but those fans knew the truth.

It took over twenty years before the Ducks were ever competitive again. All because some lousy fans were negative about a single issue and could not find the positive of the big picture. As for the coaches, they never looked back and most became major college or NFL head coaches.

    Just my opinion and observation.

    Keith

  145. oldtimer808 November 28, 2015 2:45 pm

I agree wth you ST #104. I believe Rolo was limited as an OC at Nevada because of Ault and the current head coach. Now Rolo can actually run the system that will open up the offense. It did occur to me, would Rolo offer JJ the OC position? JJ might accept if asked. I also thinkNaeole and Abe will be hired. I don’t agree with the negativity about Naeole.

  146. clyde November 28, 2015 3:27 pm

Re: Tsai’s guesses: Wondering how Smith, Rolo’s former center and good friend, will fit if Naeole is retained. Maybe RB coach, his former position at UH (he’s Oxy’s OL/OC now). I hope Rolo keeps Elimimian; young coach with SoCal connections. And then there’s Morrison? Thought about Rush, too, but he’s 67 and had a season to ease into retirement.

  147. Former UH Athlete November 28, 2015 3:52 pm

Great walk-on programs are good and all, but…

The best “walk-on” program in the universe doesn’t beat the top 100 recruiting classes. You might locate one or two walk ins that contribute a year, whereas you have about 25 spots to fill every year.

  148. Former UH Athlete November 28, 2015 3:54 pm

    110. And the years in between? Tons of costly penalties extending opponents drives.

  149. hawaiiwarriorsfab22 November 28, 2015 3:56 pm

Letting naeole go will mean the program at this this point will come full circle
Retaining him will mean one bad apple left in the barrel he has no clue what football is really about.

  150. AllG November 28, 2015 3:56 pm

Jezzy usually agree with your comments but your over thinking the Rolo thing. He will be fine at coach. Agree he will need to bring in some experienced recruiters and a solid staff. A good DC will be critical. But this will be the first time he will get to run his offense which I think will be fun to watch

  151. AllG November 28, 2015 3:57 pm

I think Cookus has a chance of being retained. Our special teams were our lone bright spot this year.

  152. Frannyk November 28, 2015 4:03 pm

Rolo needs a mentor. JJ was never intimidated with other coaches on his staff as being ‘gifted’. (Mouse, Mummie) It’ll never happen here with Rolo.

If he’s smart, he’ll surround himself with former players who have now gone on to coaching. (Miano, Abe, Ulbrich, Norwood, Chang! Now that’s a fantastic group)

But he’ll never ask JJ to help. He’s got something to prove, and would be too shortsighted and prideful to do so.

I want UH to succeed, but I don’t see it with Rolo. Recruits won’t be knocking down his door. We don’t even know what his offensive philosophy IS! DOES HE EVEN KNOW!?!?!? UGH!

  153. Former UH Athlete November 28, 2015 4:12 pm

What makes Rolo/Matlin’s job tough for filling the rest of the staff is that Rolo likely can’t pick off anybody from Nevada-Reno since UH salary is likely to be no better than equal and increased cost of living.

Rolo will need to take a hard look at UH’s current staff for 1 or 2 spots max. Honestly, none are deserving but it would serve Rolo good to retain one coach quickly to restart the recruiting quickly vs having to wait for the whole hiring process. Then after 2016, look to replace him if his unit doesn’t show improvement.

I think he should pull one or two guys from lower division schools to get some experienced coaches on the staff. Chow’s, and to a certain extent Mack’s, teams have suffered on the field and in recruiting, do to inexperienced position coaches. Less experienced coaches will have fewer recruiting connections.

Maybe not a bad idea for Rolo & Matlin to seek coaches with marketing degrees or MBAs… Marketing grads will know how to sell the program and the school.

  154. Former UH Athlete November 28, 2015 4:16 pm

Just repeating a point from my previous comment worth highlighting…

Chow’s, and to a certain extent Mack’s, teams have suffered on the field and in recruiting, do to inexperienced position coaches.

  155. Former UH Athlete November 28, 2015 4:27 pm

As what jeezy mentioned earlier, just because you played pro football, doesn’t mean you are going to be a good coach. In fact many of the best coaches had limited college playing experience.

    Playing experience (highest level):
Nick Saban – 2 years Kent St
Les Miles – 2 years Michigan
Urban Meyer – 1 year Cincinatti
Chris Peterson – 2 years UC Davis
Brian Kelly – 4 years Assumption College (yes seriously)

  156. Former UH Athlete November 28, 2015 4:30 pm

    139. Long story short… Because The coach that was dead set on high profile, high major transfers, and nobody else was going to play barring injuries.

  157. papajoe2 November 28, 2015 5:17 pm

150, FUA`~ Dick Tomey, as I understand it, never layed football. He was in baseball.

  158. Bugaz November 28, 2015 5:31 pm

Now accepting $50 deposits for new season tickets.

  159. z November 28, 2015 5:48 pm

  160. hitmanhart November 28, 2015 5:52 pm

aloha everyone !! IF ROLO WORKS OUT !
    (1) WHAT YOU GOING TO DO WHEN ROLOMANIA HIT YOU ? LOL.
    (2) WE BE ROLOING DOWN THE SIDE LINES !!
IF ROLO DOSE NOT WORK OUT !!
    (1) ROLOAIDS !!

  161. hitmanhart November 28, 2015 5:55 pm

150 . so you saying if rolo works out and wins he will be on the move in 2 or 3 years ?

  162. Come on, man! November 28, 2015 6:20 pm

    156. Most likely yes.

  163. kakaako kid November 28, 2015 7:48 pm

If Coach Rolovich finds success and moves on, it would mean he turned the program around. That is what we are tasking him to do, right? If not, we should have retained Mac, Chow, Von Appen…we never had to worry about them moving on. I would trade 4 years of success over 4 years of misery every time.

  164. Buffoman November 28, 2015 7:50 pm

Wow, nobody watching the game? Looks like the team knows that this is the last game. Playing with more emotion.

Don’t know if Lakalaka, or DSJ will get much P/T next year, the way Harris has been running.

  165. Da Punchbowl Kid November 28, 2015 8:02 pm

They look li it don’t they Buffo? Nice to see them having fun. Like the defense too…

  166. Buffoman November 28, 2015 8:10 pm

Yeah, the blocking looks crisp. Maybe the excuse is that they are playing against a lesser opponent. True. Too bad the schedule could not have started with a softer start.

    Gener getting toasted.

  167. z November 28, 2015 8:18 pm

Hollis out now Harris is down.

  168. Nanakuli November 28, 2015 8:21 pm

Rolo needs June Jones and Rich Miano. Both already live in Honolulu and love UH. They know the in and outs of recruiting and have connections. How else can Rolo get a staff together to recruit for 2016.

  169. Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 8:23 pm

    164. Rolo will most likely operate a 2 RB platoon system like he does at Nevada. I’d expect Harris to get 65% of the snaps. Hopefully he bulks up a little and becomes a little bit stronger. Ideally you wouldn’t want him getting 25+ snaps a game but we have no other options so it makes sense. Hope DSJ works hard to get back to 100% so we can have a solid 1-2 combo. Our O line can only go up from here losing Clarke but returning everyone else. Still probably need to sign a good JC guy that can play immediately like Mike Milovale did.

  170. MAKA November 28, 2015 8:35 pm

Looks like this is going to be a game. No runaway here.

  171. Buffoman November 28, 2015 8:43 pm

Amazing how bad our receivers are when a catch is needed in a clutch. That needs to improve big time.

  172. Buffoman November 28, 2015 8:49 pm

Our offense looks flat. This one looks like it will get away. Momentum is slipping away. Hope the defense can stop it.

  173. MAKA November 28, 2015 8:58 pm

Ikaika was at 62 % at half. Now down to 42 %

  174. z November 28, 2015 8:59 pm

    The difference is no Harris.

  175. MattO November 28, 2015 9:10 pm

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory…

    Rolo, come quick.

  176. Buffoman November 28, 2015 9:12 pm

We are such a bad team. Wow, we just don’t know how to win. I’d say amazing, but it’s normal for this team. How bad is it.

  177. MAKA November 28, 2015 9:12 pm

To hard to watch them give away another game.

  178. PONO November 28, 2015 9:14 pm

Is UH trying to be the worst FBS team in 2015? Snapping the ball into your own end zone to give up a TD. You have to be kidding me.

  179. azwarrior22 November 28, 2015 9:16 pm

    Ikaika not getting it done.

  180. cappie the dog November 28, 2015 9:17 pm

    Please don’t lose this game.

  181. MattO November 28, 2015 9:24 pm

Congrats for a gutty finish after a disastrous mistake. So glad the Seniors can go out with a win!!! Thanks to all the coaches and players — looking forward to seeing what the Rolo era has in store. Cautiously optimistic.

Also, what a classy statement from Miano post-game about supporting the Rolo hire. Class act all the way.

  182. MAKA November 28, 2015 9:25 pm

Glad the season is over. Now concentrate on the bowl game ? Bottom ten bowl maybe .

  183. cappie the dog November 28, 2015 9:25 pm

    Australia?

    Really?

Is there a mole in the athletic department who is trying to kill off the football program?

Can’t we get off on the right foot and schedule Northwestern…STATE.

  184. mileHIwarrior November 28, 2015 9:28 pm

With that win, let the Rolo era begin. Like it or not, this is our team, this is our coach, this will be our time!

Way to go boys! Mahalo to the seniors, the team, and the coaches!

  185. Markazulu November 28, 2015 9:29 pm

I’m very very interested to see our backfield what rolo does with st juste, Harris, davis and Lakalaka

  186. Maddog50 November 28, 2015 9:35 pm

A certain receiver reminds me of another certain receiver. You can go to class but have some class-immature act tonight. At least it was a win. Offense will be okay with some tweaks-defense? Lot more work there. Go Warriors like the helmets. A message has been sent-

  187. z November 28, 2015 9:44 pm

Like how our walk-ons stepped up their games tonight.

  188. seewhy November 28, 2015 10:10 pm

Alright Bows! Ended the season on a positive note. Looking forward to Rolos introduction on Monday.

  189. 808 November 28, 2015 10:27 pm

183, I think after that they go on the road to Ann Harbor Michigan.

  190. gobows November 28, 2015 10:38 pm

I hope Rolo goes back to the run n shoot. Otherwise I’ll be disappointed.
June would throw. I hope Rolo does the same …throw it!

  191. RB November 28, 2015 10:44 pm

    Jeezy33 November 28, 2015 at 9:43 am

    43. Remove “advisors” from your statement. I’ve heard from multiple people that Ganot and Rolo were Matlins picks before even starting the interview processes. Which is why Benjy was so pissed. He just better get it right.

WOW Jeezy if this is true I feel bad for Benjy. Goes to show Matlin’s true colors of NOT being a team player. Seems like it’s his way or no way. What a shame!!!!!

Hope Nick removes “Rainbow” from the nickname and please someone tell Eran Ganot to get better Shirts for him and his staff. Those Aloha shirts they wear are terrible.

  192. gobows November 28, 2015 10:53 pm

I do prefer Warriors instead Rainbows. And I’m an old timer who remembers Gary Allen, Ron Hall (RIP), Warren Jones, Walter Murrey ..etc .. etc..they a were all Rainbows and gave great Memories, but I still like Warriors. I like the Warrior sound and attitude. The players are not colorful rainbows.
    Hawaii players are Warriors.

    But thats just my feeling.

  193. Na Alii Pride November 28, 2015 11:11 pm

#191 RB – Damn, picking on the Aloha Shirts? Did you burn your toast this morning?

  194. Akamai Okole November 28, 2015 11:21 pm

A win is a win is a win.

    Mahalo Seniors! Mahalo Staff!

Time Rolo’s On! (double, maybe even triple entendre?)

  195. cocobean November 28, 2015 11:36 pm

RB. What do you by team player? He’s the AD he’s paid to make the tough decisions. You should applaud him for cutting the strings the seem to manipulate our four previous ADs. He’s no puppet on a string. He knows he’s laying his job on the line with each bold move he makes.

  196. cocobean November 28, 2015 11:51 pm

Why Rolo? We’ve all heard the saying of having champagne taste on a beer budget. This applies to most fans of mid majors who’s school is looking for a new football coach. This doesn’t apply to UH’s fans. Most realize we can’t afford champagne and would settle for Heineken but our reality is we’re on a Diamond Head soda budget. We can’t even afford a Coke.

  197. WarriorMojo November 28, 2015 11:53 pm

“Goes to show Matlin’s true colors of NOT being a team player. Seems like it’s his way or no way. What a shame!!!!!”

OMG, really? I thought we wanted an AD that would do things his way rather than be influenced by others?

FWIW, I think Matlin is doing an amazing job so far. Did he request that Shidler study on the economic impact of athletics to the whole state? Whether he did or didn’t, he used that study brilliantly in connection to his presentation to the legislature requesting funding for the AD. He explained what the problem is, showed how everyone would benefit once the problem is solved, and outlined a long term solution to the problem. That is brilliant vision and leadership.

  198. ai-eee-soos November 29, 2015 1:14 am

did read somewhere that Rolo planned on keeping Naole & Abe ?

was it on this blog ?

  199. ai-eee-soos November 29, 2015 1:30 am

Rolo’s college roomie Brian Smith was mentioned somewhere as a possible asst.

  200. ai-eee-soos November 29, 2015 1:33 am

Rolo’s buddy Ashley Lelie as another possibility ?
lots of talk – can’t wait for 2016 to get started.

  201. ai-eee-soos November 29, 2015 1:35 am

2016 will get started next Monday, for sure.

  202. al November 29, 2015 5:09 am

I hope all’s well with our blog host.

I am finding it odd that the beat writer did not have the lead article on the win last night nor any at all???

  203. Maddog50 November 29, 2015 5:13 am

A win is a win-that effort after Harris went down offensively was, well pretty bad. What was Hollis looking over his shoulder talking to the Qb for prior to the bad snap. They need QBs OL and who knows if any of the so called receivers can produce. # 9 unsportsmanlike conduct for taunting? Ridiculous-the defense needs a total makeover. NR number 1 job will be recruiting talent to compete and appointing a staff that can develop some of what’s there. Paul Harris had a great night but RB is another need because he is all we have right now the others spend more time in the training room than anyplace else. I am glad this is over but based on what I’ve seen turnaround is going to take time

  204. cappie the dog November 29, 2015 6:00 am

    89.

Remember when the WAC pursued North Texas for membership and they turned the conference down?

    I always root against them.

    Arrogance.

At work, I tried to drum up support for Beau Baldwin.

  205. Old School Dave November 29, 2015 7:08 am

USU’s Ikaika Malloe (former UH assistant) might be a good selection as the D-line coach. He is paid less than what he could earn at UH, but the high cost of living is a factor. Defensive improvement is essential for UH.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3CYzbopKHY

  206. Bugaz November 29, 2015 8:24 am

Hoping Rolo has his staff mostly committed with a few of them to come in tomorrow to assist him with recruiting.

  207. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 8:49 am

    191. I have no problem with AD having his guy. But it’s funny to come up with some phony advisory committee. And our last 2 football hires are coaches that might have not even been retained by their school they coached at. Many at Utah wanted NorM Chow out at Utah as OC and things have improved since and Nevada hasn’t lost sleep over Rolo departing so far and it’s possible changes were being made regardless

  208. Bryson November 29, 2015 9:04 am

So let’s say hypothetically Rolo has a 1.5 mil budget for hiring assistants…anyone think he could lure Dave Aranda back to Hawaii with an Associate HC title and the same pay he’s getting at Wisconsin,He could fill 2 roles DC/Associate HC I’m sure Rolo will fill 2 as well HC/OC which still leaves a decent amount on the table for position coaches…

  209. Bugaz November 29, 2015 9:35 am

Doubt he can lure Aranda away from Wisconsin right now, but it would be a great thing if it happened.

  210. tom November 29, 2015 9:38 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!
If I had a 1.5M budget to give to Coach Rolo and told him who I “desired” so and so as an Asst.coach

If I were the Coach Rolo, I would say that “my life expectancy as a coach in Hawaii depends on how the team does. It will soar or sink as me as coach. I want people that I can really work with”

We may have preferences – but it’s Coach Rolo that has to live or die with HIS CHOICES as assistants.

  211. Former UH Athletes November 29, 2015 9:39 am

In all fairness to Chow at Utah in 2011, it was his only year there but the bigger challenge he had to deal with was that 2011 was Utah’s first year in the Pac 12. At that time Utah had a roster full of 2-3 stars entering a conference that battles each other for 4-5 stars. It was a while different level of playing field.

Wittingham/Chow did at least make a bowl game in 2011, but really wasn’t until 2014 until they turned the corner and became a ligimate Pac 12 program.

It’s taken Utah about 3 years to fill their roster with Pac 12 caliber players.

  212. oneseason November 29, 2015 9:43 am

Harris was great, but the UH offense looked very simple compared to Louisiana-Monroe’s. I felt that I was watching a Chow lead event. I hope Coach Rolo can do what we were promised Don Bailey could do for this year.
