Rolo era

Nick Rolovich’s tenure as UH head coach began last night when he said farewell to the Nevada players following the game at San Diego State.

Rolovich will arrive in town tonight, and will be introduced at a news conference at 10 a.m. tomorrow. But according to people in the know, he already has formulated a recruiting plan.

In the time between Norm Chow’s firing on Nov. 1 and Rolovich’s hiring the past Friday, recruiting was put on hold, with the staff restricted from making new scholarship offers. But the embargo has been lifted, and it appears the Warriors have a chance at signing junior-college transfers by the Dec. 16 mid-(academic)-year date.

    Hope Rolo keeps Gary Beemer.

  2. Bugaz November 29, 2015 10:01 am

Hoping his recruiting plan works out bringing in some much needed talent.

  3. Whats up November 29, 2015 10:06 am

I’m very interested to see what recruits Rolo lands.
I’m also very interested to see who Rolo hires as defensive coordinator because I assuming Rolo is going to be Offensive coordinator himself.

I’m guessing Rolo will run the pistol offense with having Paul Harris and Melvin Davis at RB. The offense will be a run heavy pistol offense with a mobile QB like Woolsey or Riley. Plus, the Pistol uses a Tight End which Hawaii has on the roster and the Hawaii O line will be much better next season. Just a guess with the current talent on the roster.

I don’t see Rolo going Run-n-Shoot pass happy offense with the group of WR we have that can’t catch a cold learning from Luke Matthews the past few years. Not saying he won’t spread it out and pass sometimes but the current talent on the roster is better with running the ball read option/piston formation. Maybe a few recruiting classes from now Hawaii can go pass happy Run-n-shoot style.

  4. Chopsueyboy November 29, 2015 10:16 am

State supports convention center “For every dollar spent by (the convention center) we returned $20 to the state,” why can’t the same logic be for UH Athletics?

  5. Warrior Dave November 29, 2015 10:39 am

I’m coming home I’m coming home. Let the world know I’m coming home… Welcome back Coach Rolo!!!

Priority is to go visit Mckenzie Milton and his receiver teammate, Kalakaua T. That’s your QB and Receiver for the next 4 years.

  6. ai-eee-soos November 29, 2015 10:50 am

using players on current roster …

Makoa Camanse-Stevens @QB, like Cody Fajardo was used.

Makoa played some QB in high school and JC.

would look like Fajardo or Kapernick – intriguing.

  7. jt November 29, 2015 10:56 am

JJ as Assoc HC/OC and RM as DC. Everyone happy.
Also, we can barely get by our non D1 opponents. Maybe it’s time to get out of D1 and also get out of Aloha Stadium. Pack in Ching Field with the diehard faithfuls.
Here’s to the start of the Rolo Era.

  8. papayalips November 29, 2015 10:57 am

A new era begins with coach Rolo! Chow told him he needed to go somewhere else and more experience. He did. Time to roll with rolo! Hope Miano is included in that formulated recruiting plan.

  9. z November 29, 2015 10:57 am

Recruit, recruit, recruit. Dline,Lb,Cb. Will need defense to control game until offense can get going.

  10. H-Man November 29, 2015 11:20 am

And that’s why a new head coach had to be named by the end of November. Gotta get that JC QB and others to fill holes. Matlin is doing it right. And smart.

  11. Stan November 29, 2015 11:24 am

McKenzie Milton from Mililani HS could do well in Rolo’s offense.

  12. al November 29, 2015 11:49 am

Paul Harris reminds me of Gary Allen.

    Here’s a pre-Hawaii story…
    http://www.scout.com/college/hawaii/story/1551717-hawaii-offers-harris-second-chance

  13. al November 29, 2015 11:53 am

I repeat JJ nor Miano will never be on Rolo’s staff.

Does not make any sense at all.
    I’ll bet anyone here lunch.

    …nuff said!

  14. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 12:00 pm

    12. I believe you but it would make all the sense in the world to have Miano on staff. Veteran coach who has the right relationships with people and coaches in Hawaii and we know how solid his walk on program was. It would just be a huge weight lifted off Rolo to have a Miano to lean on

  15. al November 29, 2015 12:06 pm

Jeezy on paper it sounds wonderful.
But, the ncaa will continue to scrutinize Richie boy’s ethics.
He has also burned a number of bridges amongst the local coaching fraternity.
There’s also some questionable issues at your alma mater regarding some programs while there.

  16. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 12:06 pm

    1. Honest question. What is the hype with Beemer? I’m sure it isn’t his fault but Hawaii looks like a team that got over powered all season. I thought Tui Unga got too skinny personally. I feel like our whole team is on the same weight training and conditioning program but it shouldn’t be that way because some guys need to get stronger in certain areas, some need to gain weight, some need to cut weight, etc.

I’m just curious why the Beemer crowd likes him.

  17. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 12:08 pm

    14. I don’t see how issues at the high school/oia level correlate with NCAA though. Completely different rules and OIA is a joke to me anyway. I think his relationships with the kids from his camps out weigh any negative scrutiny he has with coaches.

  18. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 12:10 pm

And Vavae Tata should be one of his first calls to join the staff. Another proven coach that I’m sure we can all over look a DUI

  19. DoubleB November 29, 2015 12:18 pm

12,13 both true. Although both could be assets, Rolo would be setting himself up. I can hear it now… first bump in the road and it would be – “if June was the coach…” or “If Miano was the HC…” I’m sure they’re all good friends, but I see Rolo in it for the long haul. I also see success. Eventually.

  20. al November 29, 2015 12:20 pm

    Vavae Tata yes.

  21. Rodney November 29, 2015 12:21 pm

    Jeezz 33 agree about Tata.
But did he have 2 DUI?

  22. Stephen Tsai November 29, 2015 12:22 pm

The one thing I’ve observed is that everybody gets paid and the electricity is still on.
In other words, it looks like the university always covers the athletic department’s debts. So whether it’s written in or not, bills get paid.

  23. DoubleB November 29, 2015 12:24 pm

20, move to town and throw in a bike.

  24. Rodney November 29, 2015 12:24 pm

I personally would of liked 62 yr old
JJ But have to wait to see who Rolo
    staffs.Great win!!!!

  25. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 12:26 pm

    20. I’m not sure. The guy can coach and was a good recruiter from what I heard. So I think he deserves another chance.

  26. al November 29, 2015 12:26 pm

I am guessing that Tuioti has been in contact by his or Rolo’s accord.

More importantly, we need those who can recruit up and down the coast of California. Not to exclude the northwest, Nevada, Texas/Louisiana, and keep the Florida lines open. Of course the Deep South as in Samoa, Australia, New Zealand.

  27. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 12:27 pm

1 thing is certain.. We can have the right system with Rolo, but if he assembles a staff equivalent to NC with a bunch of inexperienced guys and grad assistants, it’s gonna be sloppy.

  28. Warrior Fan November 29, 2015 12:33 pm

Rolo needs to get a hold of Vavae Tata to run the Defense for UH… will help out immensely as well with keeping Anae, Hirkley Latu and Keala Santiago to play for the warriors.

  29. al November 29, 2015 12:33 pm

Re: Tata, things happened. I agree that he should have a shot. He was forgiven in Laie and that means a lot.

Imagine being welcomed to both Kahuku and Kalaepohaku campuses with a letter of intent in hand.

  30. Willie November 29, 2015 12:35 pm

#3Whatsup, if he stays the most mobile quick footed QB on the roster right now is Zwahlen. Yeah he had a bunch of rust from his 2 year mission and this red shirt year. But check out his HS tape and he has been quite impressive at practice this year. ST said he is not going anywhere despite his dad’s close relationship with Chow and I really hope this info is spot on. Need to have something for Rolo to work with getting ready for another brutal opening schedule in 2016.

  31. el burro sabio November 29, 2015 12:36 pm

Does Rolovich and Vavae Tata have a previous relationship that Vae would be approached? Al or Jeezy do you know? I’m just wonderng.

  32. Maddog50 November 29, 2015 12:40 pm

So no McMackin no Ault no Polian. Common sense and Nick Rolovich. He is not the first guy to have by measurement an appearance of mediocrity to ascend to much higher levels. There have been many coaching greats that have not built an impressive resume where they are at because of circumstances. Loving Hawaii who cares-former player-who cares- fan favorite who cares-what matters is what is inside him and how he applies it. Forget all that other stuff. His asst coaches, recruiting docket and his overall plan are what matters. True visionary people have a way of seeing things others can not. I am beginning to see this although a little muddled. Recruiting and staff appointment are key. I think this guy will put the naysayers into a narcoleptic seizure!!!! The more I remove emotion from this I start to get it-I will be surprised if it turns out negatively. I will ban myself form every element of the Warrior society if NR does not have an immediate impact and turn this around—-GO WARRIORS!!!!

  33. Warrior Fan November 29, 2015 12:41 pm

Hope Tata ends up as our DC… Not sure if there’s any previous ties with Rolo and Tata

  34. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 12:44 pm

    30. I don’t know. I just think it makes a lot of sense and majority of the fans agree. When Jones first got hired, he brought in the best local high school coaches. Seems like a smart idea.

  35. oldtimer808 November 29, 2015 12:44 pm

#7 Kinda sarcastic attitude that is not constructive. Look I wouldn’t be surprised if Rolo sits down with JJ and offer him a position. Why not JJ did it with his mentor.

  36. oldtimer808 November 29, 2015 12:45 pm

I have a feeling Rolo will not use the pistol as his base offense. He was held back at Nevada.

  37. Not an Expert November 29, 2015 12:47 pm

Welcome back Rolo. You need to turn this around and don’t blame you when successful you get better opportunities to make 3 million plus. Be loyal to an extent cause UH is like our state politics. Make everyone think you are thinking of everyone else.

Use this coaching opportunity as a stepping stone like Tomey and Jones because you will never know when they will say “what have you done for me lately”. Both former coaches have one thing in common, not wanted by the higher ups when reapplying for positions at UH. UH leaders do not like people of talent and leadership that can outshine them. One thing Tomey has is a unscathed public image which cannot be said of Jones.

  38. Rodney November 29, 2015 12:47 pm

Would like mix on staff. Not too much local connections.
Abe would be one and Tuioti and maybe a Vinny Passes!!

  39. graham November 29, 2015 12:48 pm

Tata is a must, but 2 DUIs in concerning.I would imagine Ashely Leile will be considered. He was with Rolo at Nevada and now coaches WR at a small school in Alabama.

  40. Whats up November 29, 2015 12:49 pm

I think the current QB’s on the roster better starting running with the WR’s, DB’s, Safeties and RB’s… They are going to be required to be a running QB’s in the Pistol/read option offense. No more pro style sitting in the pocket or roll out to pass. They are going to have to use their wheels and arm now.

  41. graham November 29, 2015 12:49 pm

I was against hiring Rolo at first but Im on board now. I think he will make some good hiring decisons

  42. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 12:49 pm

    35. Pretty sure his base set will be the pistol. It was used at Hawaii with Alex Green if I remember correctly. Not to say he won’t implement other wrinkles but his base will most likely be pistol

  43. Pomai November 29, 2015 12:50 pm

Beemer-Conditioning, Naeole-Offensive Line, Elimimian-Secondary, Samuseva-Defensive Line, Noga-Inside Linebackers and Miano-Director of Player Personnel are the ones who would be good to keep. But bottom line is he needs personnel that he is comfortable with…..

  44. Warrior Fan November 29, 2015 12:53 pm

The 2 DUI’s are in the past and Tata has moved on. Seems like a smart move to get some talented local coaches on his staff. Tata for Defensive Coordinator

  45. Rodney November 29, 2015 12:53 pm

Hope Rolo keeps parts of the power run and TE

  46. al November 29, 2015 12:53 pm

    Scott Harding GA.

I’d love to see Nate Ilaoa finish up his degree and come in as another GA.

  47. al November 29, 2015 12:56 pm

    Lelie or stutz1.
    Timmy Chang?
    McCloud?

  48. al November 29, 2015 12:58 pm

    Brian Smith or Naeole?
    Abe as ST also mentioned.

Ya think Dennis McNight has contacted Rolo.

Too bad we no longer can afford Klemm or Ulbrich.

  49. Not an Expert November 29, 2015 12:58 pm

Do leaders at UH despise coaches that makes more money than them. Basketball and football men coaches so to name. Whatever they perceive because of money and position has made them act accordingly due to their ego in regards to these 2 sports.

  50. Inyoface November 29, 2015 1:01 pm

    Oh snap we won! Gyeah!

  51. al November 29, 2015 1:01 pm

Rolo’s recruitment of his staff is of the utmost.
His first QB recruit will be another milestone.

  52. al November 29, 2015 1:03 pm

    Sorry…McKnight.

  53. Warrior Fan November 29, 2015 1:04 pm

Excited to see who Rolo’s first recruit will be.. also who he selects for his staff. One thing Chow did do was he attended local HS football games.. Hope that continues with Rolo..

  54. Not an Expert November 29, 2015 1:05 pm

Intriguing and exciting to see who will be on Rolo’s staff. Let’s see the diversity and talent that can be hired by Rolo.

  55. braddahmoke November 29, 2015 1:05 pm

Beamer is overrated. Treats players like s&**. Many stories out there regarding verbal abuse esp. toward scout players but won’t butt heads with the starters.
Yea, it’s football but mistreatement and harrasing behavior should not be there.

  56. al November 29, 2015 1:07 pm

The Rolo hybrid offense will take on its own identity and should be aptly named.

He’s had it in his back pocket since the Mack days and will finally be able to unveil it. Thus, his recruitment of offensive staff will need some familiarity in at least some parts of it.

  57. z November 29, 2015 1:07 pm

    27. That my top 3 from the north shore.

  58. Shoko November 29, 2015 1:16 pm

Polian said some nice things about Rolo and the UH when going through the interview process in his postgame presser. Sounded a little emotional.

    Starts at 10:40.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eySoz07_Yr4

And yes, ask JJ if he’s interested.

  59. z November 29, 2015 1:17 pm

    41. Agree. The base probably will be the pistol. We got Harris and St. Juste. He adjust according to our talent. He has said in the past that he would adjust according to personnel.

  60. nutmegger November 29, 2015 1:17 pm

JJ, Tomey, Miano would best be utilized to fund raise and stir up community support for the team. I also see them as visiting mentors to motivate, relate stories and history of the past and show the passion of Warrior Football.

Rolo is a thinker, his OC and DC selections I expect will reflect his philosophy of the game. He needs an independent hand to establish his strategy. I am excited!

  61. David J. November 29, 2015 1:27 pm

GO WARRIORS! GO LUCK NICK!. I really seriously hope that Nick let go all this year coaching staff and go out and get great asst. Coaches! . Why not get the former head coach from University of Georgia! Because has been a great recruiting coach and a coach too!. A most on defense coaches needs a lot’s of great staff even on offense too. But the truth is they really seriously need great coaching staff !.

  62. z November 29, 2015 1:41 pm

Need to recruit new referees or quit sending us the junk ones.

  63. Derek November 29, 2015 1:56 pm

Irrational expectations. Mark Richt over 15 years had a record of 145-51 at Georgia and he gets fired because he didn’t win an SEC championship lately. If he was at Hawaii he would be God.

I don’t know if Rolovich can win championships, recruit, lead, or organize and manage a staff, but he can’t be any worse than Chow, can he?

Who has he recruited? Woolsey from Cc of SF? Anybody else?

  64. C-Pop November 29, 2015 2:00 pm

Rolovich will need a good mix of assertive & hungry younger coaches (lower end salaries) & expierienced recruiters / X&O guys preferably with local ties & west coast ties ( majority of skill players CA, coast) profile athletes (ties to HI, military, airline connection, Polynesian, relatives etc) Established recruiters & coaching success in D1 preferable.

  65. clyde November 29, 2015 2:05 pm

Derek: FWIW, I think it was Rolo/Mac who initially offered Woolsey a scholarship in 2011.

  66. C-Pop November 29, 2015 2:17 pm

Vavae Tata being given a chance at Kahuku, Laie with the overwhelming LDS church community says a lot about second chance opportunities. What he was able to accomplish this season speaks to his coaching & leadership abilities, granted the talent in Laie seems endless no matter the HC. Tata’s defensive schemes were unmatched in HS level, Vae used his college experience to lead his Red Raider D to State title. Is he ready to be a D1 DC I don’t think so, not yet, maybe a few years as a D1 assistant first will prepare him better, coaching vs D1 as opposed to HS level big step up week to week.

  67. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 2:26 pm

    64. I mean, he’s been an assistant at Stanford and Vandy. Both schools known for good, smart defenses. I know DC is a jump but I would do what it takes to get him on staff. We’re gambling period with hiring Rolo to take a jump to HC.

  68. LizKauai November 29, 2015 2:30 pm

    WELCOME HOME, ROLO

  69. Da Punchbowl Kid November 29, 2015 2:37 pm

Rolo is a good choice – all the ingredients are there. Let’s hope he gets the assistants he needs to turn things around.

I firmly believe he has the material with returning players for a good base. Recruiting must be swift, sure and certain. It was maddening to see the overload at some positions and the lack of depth at others in the last few years.

Riley and Zwahalen both are nice to have in reserve, especially if there is a dramatic shift in the offense. Elimimien’s defense was fun to watch last night.

Harris is going to be a an even bigger star in Rolo’s offense. Harris was money the last three to four games. We have a good looking stable of RBs to work with next year.

A friend shared this article with me earlier today. Wonder if we can get him back to help our receivers. His offense gets high praise here too:
    http://www.heraldcourier.com/sports/the-man-behind-emory-s-spread-and-shred-offense/article_8aade968-5a67-11e4-8e8d-001a4bcf6878.html

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  71. z November 29, 2015 2:45 pm

    Come back Stutz!

  72. C-Pop November 29, 2015 2:50 pm

    65. Tata definitely should be considered as an assistant for home team UH as an assistant, but I think his return to other colleges stock is also up!

  73. Bryson November 29, 2015 2:56 pm

I’ve mentioned Tata numerous times as needing to be apart of the UH football staff in some capacity, now that we have our Head Coach maybe that becomes even more of a reality..as for being a DC I’m not to sure..it’s easy to call plays defensively when you have the best talent in the state not only talent wise but size and speed as well..

  74. Come on, man! November 29, 2015 2:57 pm

Allow me to summarize the entire “rolo needs to hire assistant coaches!” conversation on the warrior world blog comments.

“rolo needs to assemble an experienced and seasoned coaching staff or he will go the way of norm chow! as such, he must staff his entire office with former UH players with dubious or not very developed coaching pedigrees, and a high school coach who won the most recent state football championship! after all, he should take a gamble because why not? rolo being hired was a gamble!”

  75. gobows November 29, 2015 3:00 pm

I wouldnt be surprised if JJ applies for another coaching job. Either with Rolo or some other school. Maybe NFL assistant. He wants to coach.

  76. ALLAN November 29, 2015 3:01 pm

OUR WIDE RECEIVERS CONSISTENTLY UNABLE TO GET SEPARATION FROM OPPONENTS’ DB’S, AND OUR DB’S CONSISTENTLY WERE UNABLE TO COVER OPPONENTS’ PASS RECEIVERS. ALSO, WAHINE SOCCER TEAM A STEP SLOWER THAN OTHER TEAMS. A RELATIVE ON SOCCER SCHOLARSHIP SAYS SHE WAS SLOWER AT THE END OF THE SEASON THAN AT THE BEGINNING. TRAINING.

  77. Bryson November 29, 2015 3:03 pm

Is tonight the awards luau,if so anyone know how much tickets are?

  78. C-Pop November 29, 2015 3:08 pm

Hiring “First Staffs” always tough: HCs usually have in mind a “Right Hand” man that can do most of minor administrative duties (set up/update recruiting priorities, follow up/call immediate coaches pool as needed). Loyalty always should be a priority for HC.

  79. Former UH Athlete November 29, 2015 3:14 pm

I would imagine the Pistol being the base for the offense. In theory that would be the easiest to transition based on Chow wanting to run the ball (in theory), which means recruiting OLinemen who can run block (again, in theory).

  80. gobows November 29, 2015 3:24 pm

    76. Just wondering were you a UH Football player?

  81. ALLAN November 29, 2015 3:25 pm

74 CONT’INUED: NEED SPEED & QUICKNESS WHICH WAS NOT EVIDENT IN RECENT YEARS.

  82. Kifi November 29, 2015 3:38 pm

#6 – Bingo!!! Somebody finally got it.

  83. Spidey November 29, 2015 3:45 pm

Big fan of both the Pistol and the R&S although my #1 choice would be combining the two for some sort of uh-specific* hybrid offense! I’ll be curious who, if anyone, is retained from the current staff; if Rolo did call the plays wouldn’t he still need an OC? . IMHO Chow was the biggest problem, ie his arrogance and antiquated view of the college game. Overall i’m happy with Rolo as the HC hire; particularly when you look at our other 4 interviewees.

But as for the people saying we should drop down from D-1…YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CRAZY, or at the very least misinformed. Being D1 is huuuge in terms of revenue, recruiting, bowl games, and a tv-deal**. We’ll get back to being competitive; it wasn’t that long ago that we were a force to be reckoned with. Thing about how long a school like Washington St was in the gutter. Better to struggle and attempt to rebound than drop down to DII. Just not even close to a smart move.

    *as far as i know
**We MUST drop this ppv nonsense and sign a PROPER (even if small) TV DEAL!! There’s a reason almost EVERY DI program does it that way.

  84. Paniolo November 29, 2015 3:50 pm

As a long time Warrior football fan, I hope Rolo’s new staff does not include any of Norm Chow’s staff currently. I do hope he will bring the “Run and Shoot” offense that “once” lighted up Aloha Stadium.

  85. Stephen Tsai November 29, 2015 4:05 pm

My “guess” is Naeole, Elimimian and Smith will be joining the staff. Maybe Lelie.

  86. Stephen Tsai November 29, 2015 4:06 pm

By the way, thanks for the texts from some of you. But, no, I didn’t die. They just forgot to post my UH story online this morning.

  87. ai-eee-soos November 29, 2015 4:10 pm

Brian Smith – Rolo’s college roomie.

Someone posted that he was OC at (Occidental?).

  88. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 4:11 pm

    71. Mililani and St. Louis had the most talent in the state. Kahuku won strictly on defense. His adjustments made vs St. Louis were college level.

  89. Konaboy November 29, 2015 4:13 pm

Stephen, surprised JJ didn’t get hired with a succession plan for Rolo in 3-5 yrs. Would your “guess” be that it came down to $$$?

  90. oldtimer808 November 29, 2015 4:21 pm

#59 David J…..I humbly suggest that you find a program to teach you proper grammer. Your sentence structure and thought process are unclear. Back to UH football yes bring back Stutz.

  91. oldtimer808 November 29, 2015 4:24 pm

#84 I doubt seriously that it came to a salary with JJ if it even went that far. Matlin made his decision that it would be Rolo all the way.

  92. oldtimer808 November 29, 2015 4:26 pm

Looks like Stutzman is turning into quite an offensive coordinator at Emery College. Mahalo for the article it was very enlightning.

  93. Warrior Fan November 29, 2015 4:32 pm

Tata can do a better job running the defense then anyone UH had during Chows tenure. Need to offer him & get him on our staff JMOj

  94. Bryson November 29, 2015 4:51 pm

Sorry Jeezy I meant most talent on the defensive side of the ball ST.Louis was a close 2nd though

  95. WWF November 29, 2015 5:35 pm

    #12 Al,

I take that bet for lunch!

  96. Warrior Fan November 29, 2015 5:40 pm

    71. It takes both talent & coaching. Tata was able to get the most out of his kids which is what coaching is all about. They exposed St.Louis O line which was suspect all year by doing stunts ETC.. That’s all coaching.. Combined with the talented kids from Laie. Tata has coached in the PAC 12.. SEC.. A lot bigger stage then the MWC so I think he’ll do fine as the DC..

  97. AllG November 29, 2015 5:41 pm

My guess is Rolo will go back to the Run and Shoot out of the Pistol. I think he will keep a TE for short yardage and goaline. He mentioned transitioning to this offense before he left for Nevada. Bringing back Ron Lee as WR coach might not be a bad move. I would really like to see Tuioti brought back as well. Cookus is the only one I would like to see back from current staff, possibly Elimian as well if Miano is not brought back.

  98. 808warriorfan November 29, 2015 7:05 pm

If I may, a personal wish, JJ as OC and Rich Miano on the Defensive Staff and also working w/ the walk-ons. Need to have the Lee Brothers involved maybe Cal as DC and Ron as WR coach. “Rolo” can’t do a Norm Chow whose first staff made absolutely no sense at all and ended up with a revolving door during his tenure w/ assistants.

  99. kev-1 November 29, 2015 7:08 pm

Come on guys. Slow your roll on Tata for DC. I would like to see him on staff, but I think we need some experience at the coordinator spot. Besides, why would Rolo take such a gamble of his own?

  100. 3-Prong November 29, 2015 7:45 pm

Re: HANA HO’U. As much as I would love JJ to come in as the OC, I think his persona MAY be too big for a rookie head coaching situation. Fans, assistant coaches and players would always be second guessing Rolo and looking to JJ for answers.

  101. 3-Prong November 29, 2015 7:46 pm

    The operative word is MAY.

  102. RB November 29, 2015 8:24 pm

Can Rolo fill the stadium like this.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LRa8BRigMM

I didn’t know Jim Harbaugh played here in college.

  103. cocobean November 29, 2015 8:29 pm

Al. Whoever from the current staff that’s going to be retained should’ve gotten a call by now any of your little birdies chirping……

  104. cappie the dog November 29, 2015 8:32 pm

    61.

The idea of going 7-6 excites me.

  105. cappie the dog November 29, 2015 8:37 pm

    76.

    I enjoyed your non-sequitir into women’s soccer.

If it was a revenue-generating sport, I think the university would be looking for a new coach.

  106. cappie the dog November 29, 2015 8:40 pm

    83.

    Yup.

Southern Mississippi is back on the map.

  107. Old School Dave November 29, 2015 8:40 pm

Watch out for having too many cooks in the kitchen.

This guy was on the staff in 2008 and has been compiling an impressive resume as a position coach at the college level. Obvious that UH’s D-line could use and needs someone like him.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kCsk1JjGd0

  108. The Reddest Raider November 29, 2015 9:08 pm

@warriorfan, Coach Var Tata just got his feet wet at Kahuku. The kids and team need him there, especially after going through 3 coaches in the last 3 years. To leave Kahuku for UH this soon would be devastating to not only the football players but to all the younger kids he has influenced as a teacher as well as a coach. Plus, he’s a Red Raider at hear now. The community has adopted him and he’s part of the family. Sorry Rolovich….You can’t have him! Lol!
Maybe Vae will be the next UH head coach after Rolovich’s time is up, Shoot, UH has never had a Polynesian HC.

  109. winning November 29, 2015 9:21 pm

*36 OLDTIMER, you are spot on. I believe he was tied up with new coach. Now he will have the final say. Let it all hang out!!

  110. Na Alii Pride November 29, 2015 9:32 pm

#34 Cheesy, I mean Jeezy – How do you know that the “majority of the fans” want Tata? I’m not saying that we don’t, but before you can speak for the majority of us, you’d have to ask us first. I don’t recall being asked. And by the way, all you’ve been saying is that Rolo is inexperienced and is ill equipped to handle this re-build. Yet, you advocate Rolo hiring a high school coach with no college level DC experience? You can’t have your cake and eat it too. You seem to think you know what we all think and want. You don’t.

  111. winning November 29, 2015 9:48 pm

Now I’ve seen it all with “non-sequitir” and “narcoleptic” something. WHOA!! Can anyone tell me what “non-sequitir” means? “Narcoleptic” is a very nice descriptive adjective. Must be some English Majors out there.

  112. Na Alii Pride November 29, 2015 9:50 pm

And by the way, Jeezy, JJ’s first staff was:

    George Lumpkin
    Mike Cavanaugh
    Wes Suan
    Rich Miano
    Dan Morrison
    Dennis McKnight
    Vantz Singletary
    Ron Lee
    Greg McMackin

Only Morrison and Lee were Hawaii high school coaches.

  113. nanakuli November 29, 2015 10:01 pm

I cannot wait till 10:00 am to hear Rolo’s plan. I hope JJ, Miano, Naeole, and Cal Lee will be there to help Rolo recruit. Beemer can go back to the Mainland. Our players look weak and skinny. Let’s get the boys lifting hard core and looking like the Noga brothers. Kennedy looks like a linebacker.

  114. islandman November 29, 2015 10:18 pm

Rolovich press conference streaming at 10 am, but sometimes it doesn’t stream so well :

  115. z November 29, 2015 10:22 pm

If I remember correctly Lumpkin was his first hire.

  116. z November 29, 2015 10:23 pm

    113. Some local tv stations will be streaming too. I can’t remember which one.

  117. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 10:24 pm

    109.
Have u not read the blogs or boards the past few days? Majority of the fans do want Tata. U do know what majority means right? It doesn’t mean I’m speaking on your behalf.
And what’s your point with only Morrison and Lee being high school coaches? My point is it would be smart to hire 1 or 2 really good high school coaches here that could boost local recruiting and have a strong tie to local community.

    Someone’s bitter.

  118. al November 29, 2015 10:26 pm

103… Read the print. ST has stated several times that Naeole and Abe will return.
    That’s it bull.

  119. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 10:29 pm

    99. Not saying he should be DC. But find a way to get him on staff. You know how our budget is. We’re not going to be able to afford some proven D1 DC. Whoever we hire is going to have to take a step up. Dave Aranda wasn’t exactly proven as we brought him over from Delta. Kevin Clune was a lb coach. So we’re most likely going to be offering a coach who coaches DL or LBs at another school. Tata has experience at least at the BCS level

  120. Jeezy33 November 29, 2015 10:30 pm

    117. Hearing another coach might get retained as well. Not too thrilled.

  121. kev-1 November 29, 2015 10:49 pm

118 … what you’re saying makes sense. I am just hoping that Rolo realizes (and I’m assuming he’ll want to control the offense) that he needs the most experience at the DC spot. Out of all of the positions to fill on the staff, that will be most important. Then again, we saw what an experienced DC did with our defense this year. I know it wasn’t all on Mason, but when a unit gets progressively worse game by game, you contribute that to coaching. Shouldn’t happen.

  122. kev-1 November 29, 2015 10:50 pm

Anyone know of any young FCS DC’s looking to step up to D1?

  123. kev-1 November 29, 2015 10:56 pm

Another question … anyone out there familiar with which coach was responsible for the Kahuku DBs? I want those fingerprints on our D staff.

Jeezy … would you buy into a Cal Lee as DC with Tata on staff? Or are you among those that think Cal should stay at the high school level?

  124. truegreen November 29, 2015 10:59 pm

#102 RB: Yup, that was Dick Tomey’s last game as Head Coach here. That’s about the only thing he had in common with Fred von Appen, his last game was a loss to Michigan at Aloha Stadium.

And of course, while Jim Harbaugh was the starting QB against Tomey in ’86, the starter in ’98 was of course…Tom Brady.

And that’s your fun fact trivia of the day!

  125. Na Alii Pride November 29, 2015 11:02 pm

#116 – I think it’s you that is bitter. You haven’t had anything nice to say about this hire. By your definition, the “majority” of the fans are thrilled that Rolo is our next coach, or haven’t you been reading the posts?

  126. z November 29, 2015 11:14 pm

    Bring back the sun god.

  127. RR4L November 29, 2015 11:45 pm

    Sorry, Tata belongs to Kahuku.

  128. Frannyk November 29, 2015 11:54 pm

Sounds like Stutz is lighting it up!!

    Just sayin’.

  129. Frannyk November 30, 2015 12:12 am

I was an associate for years in a big corporation. I worked there and was loyal to the cause.

I had an opportunity to venture out on my own and become the ‘Head Cheese’. The learning curve was overwhelming. Although I had worked in the business for years, I had never done it in the capacity where the buck stopped at my desk. But thankfully, I had mentors that I could lean on for advice and counsel.

Rolo needs a mentor. I don’t know what his ties are to other HC’s, but it would behoove him to glean from their experience and expertise. To be able to call them and ask for advice. It’s impossible to know everything, even when people expect you to.

I hope he surrounds himself with those who will help him grow into a great leader.

  130. Tanoai Reed November 30, 2015 1:05 am

Not sure why my comments keep getting rejected. All I’m saying is Coach Tata has impacted so many kids at all ages while he’s been at Kahuku these past 6 months that it would be a hard blow to them all if he left them so soon. Imagine if Rolovich won the Mountain West conference and then picked up and left to coach the league after that season. How would UH feel?

  131. BigWave96744 November 30, 2015 3:05 am

    How’s about
    HC/OC – Nick Rolovich
QB, Man in the Booth – Ron Lee
    WR – Ashley Lelie
    RB – Brian Smith
    OL – Chris Naeole

    DC – Ikaika Maloe
    DL – Ma’a Tanuvasa
    LB – Cal Lee
    DB – Abraham Elimimian

ST, Walkon Program, Pro Day – Rich Miano

  132. BigWave96744 November 30, 2015 3:07 am

Also, would Nevada true frosh QB Austin Kafentzis consider transferring to the UH? Hmmmm?

  133. airsumo November 30, 2015 3:53 am

Several days ago someone posted an article featuring Brian Cabral. If I recall correctly, he was a lb/dc at Colorado. According to the article he is now at a fcs school. Would he be someone to be considered for the same at UH?

  134. cappie the dog November 30, 2015 4:02 am

    123.

That really is a “fun fact trivia of the day”.

I have no memory of Hawaii going up against Tom Brady.

I guess that’s why he went in the fifth round. At the college level, you couldn’t see he was a sure-fire pro.

  135. warrior fan November 30, 2015 5:28 am

I know a lot of people want to retain Naeole, but I don’t think our O-line has been that good. I agree with Jeezy…need to find a way to get Tata on staff.. If he can be the DC even better…

  136. sofaking_blk November 30, 2015 6:25 am

Everybody is talking about who should be on Rolo’s staff. The one person he should reach out to is the BEST player UH has ever had. IMHO, Colt Brennan would make an excellent QB coach. Who knows more about QBing the RnS than Colt, just saying.

  137. cappie the dog November 30, 2015 6:32 am

    MANROOP CLAIR ALERT!

    Seattle at California
    Tomorrow: 5PM: PAC-12 Network

  138. jeezy33 November 30, 2015 6:59 am

    122.

I’m fine with that as long as Rolo can bring in 2-3 experienced coaches from the mainland with good recruiting ties to areas we should tap into. Texas should be a priority along with Cali. I think we should also tap into Las Vegas area where we got JGW.

  139. islandman November 30, 2015 7:10 am

How come Gouveia not mentioned to be retained ?

  140. letsgowarriors November 30, 2015 7:11 am

maybe bring Jacob Yoro home to be LB coach.

  141. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2015 7:49 am
