Black-and-Blue Friday

It’s operation day for quarterback Max Wittek (right knee) and kickoff returner Keelan Ewaliko (knee).

Wittek’s absence leaves Ikaika Woolsey as the Warriors’ only experienced quarterback. Beau Reilly, now No. 2, has not taken a snap in a game in his two UH seasons. Aaron Zwahlen is redshirting. Nobody seems to know if that walk-on scout quarterback is still on the team.

Ewaliko will be missed as a kickoff returner. UH fans also will have to wait ’til next year to see Ewaliko as the wildcat quarterback. A false-start penalty sabotaged his lone play taking a snap.

The good news is tight end Dakota Torres won’t need surgery for an injured shoulder. The bad news is he’s still out for the remaining two games. Torres was targeted seven times last week in the revised offensive game plan of throwing more to the tight end.

Do people still say, “shake a leg,” as a synonym for “hurry up”?

Dec. 16 is the signing day for mid-academic-year transfers (translation: JC players who want to enroll in January).

Last year’s mid-year additions included slotback Dylan Collie, defensive end Sione Kauhi, rush end Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea, and linebacker Russell Williams jr.

“It basically comes out of the students’ pocket,” said UH Professor Robert Cooney, chairman of the UH Manoa Faculty Senate’s executive committee. “So I think that has to be addressed. It has to be fair. If the students don’t want to pay for athletics, they shouldn’t be required to do that,”
“If student don’t want to pay” what about if they don’t want to pay for you to get paid Professor

aloha everyone !! hope for all to well for max and Ewaliko in todays surgery !! and also Dakota Torres get all healed up good !! and to max thanks for been a warrior!!
and let hope they feel the head coach job before the end of the season!!

  5. Trunks420 November 20, 2015 11:49 am

Would love to see coach Miano be our New Head Coach.

Woosley should be implemented in some scemes or packages he is more mobile than accurate.

Anyway I’m done with sports till next September.

So like the song my niece sings says….”wake me up when September Begins”

  6. What??? November 20, 2015 12:07 pm

Agree to disagree – do not want to see Miano as new head coach.

  7. 3-Prong November 20, 2015 12:10 pm

The rain might tilt the scale a little toward Kahuku’s ground game as passing gets to be a little more difficult.

  8. 3-Prong November 20, 2015 12:11 pm

    …and Let’s Go Bows!

  9. azwarrior22 November 20, 2015 12:29 pm

We don’t know if Miano would make a good head coach or not; he has never been a head coach. At this point in the program, we need to stop the bleeding. We need someone that has a proven track record, knows the landscape, and can bring back the fans. If you said JJ, JJ, JJ, you win 🙂

Some of these other candidates may certainly be well qualified but you just don’t know and Hawaii can’t afford to to take a chance on an unproven coach; it would very well kill the program. And you need a coach that will bring the fans back and generate excitement. Some of those other names floating around will not put fans back in the seats because they are unknown products.

It seems that it should come down to someone that is a previous head coach or current head coach that will bring excitement back to the fans. I think that leaves JJ or Babers.

JJ always looked out for what’s best for Hawaii, even though he didn’t get the support he needed his first go-around. He’s always been about second chances. JJ has come home and Maitlin can seal the deal.

  10. NorthShoreFan November 20, 2015 12:45 pm

    carry over ..

BigWave96744….. just flashed a mental pic….JJ & Pat Hill sitting unda da koa tree…having a couple of screw drivers…talking football…

dunno, St Louis receivers caught the ball ok against Mililani last week…was wet…Anyhoo, either which way…gonna be a great night of football at the Aloha.
    Guud Luck to the teams!

  12. LizKauai November 20, 2015 12:58 pm

God Bless and healing energy to all of our wounded Warriors and fans.
The good news is that it’s almost over.

  13. z November 20, 2015 1:15 pm

    Are coaches still recruiting?

  14. nutmegger November 20, 2015 1:39 pm

I believe the new HC decision has to look ahead to more than “stopping the bleeding”.

A coach’s familiarity of the UH landscape and the history of his past performance at UH has merit, but it should not be the primary reason for hiring.

Personally, I feel the significant factors for success are recruiting, motivating, managing a team of highly competitive and effective coaches, game management, marketing and community outreach.

I look forward to see who the AD selects.

  15. SteveM November 20, 2015 2:14 pm

    BigWave96744 November 20, 2015 at 9:07 am
JJ as HC, Pat Hill as DC
    Now that would be interesting.

BigWave96744 — GMTA 🙂 I had the same thought. Knowing the past very professional rivalry and friendship between the two (each would never accuse the other of running up the score on each other, but that’s what they did). If JJ could not lure McMackin back, I thought maybe Pat Hill.

I do not know if Pat Hill is a defensive genius or not, but he is a motivator. In a sense, he would fit the role of Jerry Glanville, who JJ said, “made (UH) coaching fun again”. OK, maybe Glanville is credited for being one of the designers of the 3-4 defense in the NFL old days, but his relationship to JJ was colorful and epic. I can see JJ and Hill leaving tickets for Elvis at the box office. 😛

  16. cocobean November 20, 2015 2:47 pm

  17. willieboy November 20, 2015 2:47 pm

steve m- holy smokes…. you really want our coaching staff to be known as the “expendables” of the mountain west?!?!?!

  18. cocobean November 20, 2015 3:04 pm

The “expendables” were an over the hill gang….but they got the job done. Then again that was movie make believe. No one can really say if the “prodigal son” gets hired he will produce a Hollywood type ending to his story or produce a Greek tragedy.

  19. SteveM November 20, 2015 3:08 pm

willieboy — from 2006-2007, “The Over the Hill” gang might have been appropriate, although no media dared say it on their way to the Sugar Bowl. JJ assembled a coaching staff with around 200 years college and NFL coaching experience–mostly NFL. If JJ becomes the Head Coach, I am very curious who his coaches will be this time around. If, if, if…

  20. MAKA November 20, 2015 3:25 pm

If is a JJ – (STEVE-M) maybe he will just hire grad assistants, so cannot call them “over the hill gang” any more ?

  21. z November 20, 2015 3:28 pm

    Go Warriors!
    Go Wahine!

  22. cappie the dog November 20, 2015 4:02 pm

I would love to brave the elements and cheer on, I guess, St. Louis(since I now know Cal Lee is a Kalani alumnus) get pass Kahuku.

    But I have priorities.

I’m going to the Loyola Marymount/Hawaii game.

At some point in the game, somebody will hit the side of the backboard, or hit the bottom of the rim, or miss a wide-open layup.

    I don’t love women’s basketball.

    I love UH sports.

And Laura Beeman’s brand of basketball is starting to resemble the Vince Goo teams.

I smacked my forehead a whole lot less last season.

You had to be in person to watch the Jim Bolla/Dale Takahara Dias squads.

I once witnessed Amy Sanders turn the ball over on three consecutive possessions.

I still don’t understand how she made the WNBA, albeit briefly.

I think the difference between the Na Wahine making and missing the post-season last season was Shawlina Sergovia not being academically eligible as a junior. As a one-year player, she just wasn’t ready to step into a starter’s role.

This is, I hope, their breakthrough season.

  23. A-House November 20, 2015 4:20 pm

it’s a little after 3am and on my way to 24hr in Kaneohe

pass a certain house — see dining room lights on — someone sitting with hands folded behind head — appears to be looking at a TV — hmmm!

was going to toot me horn, but 2 early in the morning!

  24. A-House November 20, 2015 4:29 pm

even if the UH BOR approves the UHAD budget proposal – doubtful if the legislature will fund the $5 + million in “special funds” for UH

since autonomy, they have always used it as a crutch to NOT fund athletics — it’s up to upper campus to spread the “wealth” around and if upper campus decides to fund academic then it’s not the Legislature’s fault.

however, I am hopeful that they do accept and pass the budget nearly intact — why not Legislature? let’s see if Matlin’s budget goals are met! sad part is that the UHAD will go back to the same “deep pockets” and ask for more – better to see more separate individuals/entities donating than hit the same ones!!!!!!!

and lest not forget — 1,000 people donating $100 each is NO small change!! 5,ooo is even better!!!

  25. A-House November 20, 2015 4:40 pm

let’s see my accounting [ dang, me no like accounting ]:

$5.2 million out of a $1 billion plus state budget is peanuts – like .0000005%

hot dog — my calculator only goes up to $10 million — where’s my pen and pencil?

point is: it’s miniscule ( ha, like my spelling? )

  26. winning November 20, 2015 4:50 pm

The trouble with blogs is that most of the general population do not read them.
To paraphrase the “Legislature” today, students may not want an increase in athletic activities fees? As I have stated before what is the big deal with a $50 increase in tuition for that purpose To the “Legislature” and students, when was the last time an outing for 2 people to a movie, for example, cost less than $50? Yes, it is possible if you don’t buy popcorn, sodas and maybe a couple of hot dogs or candy. Your date might dump you because she would probably think you are a cheapskate, but yes it was under $50. Try having dinner with a date for less-yes its possible at Zippy’s or LL if agreed upon beforehand. If $50 is too much then go to another school that is cheaper!! Go to one of the CC colleges then transfer over. Whooa! big savings! Raise em up already, whats the big deal when you gotta pay $10000+/semester!!!!

  27. cappie the dog November 20, 2015 4:51 pm

Air Force is the second option-oriented team in a row that confronts Boise State.

It’s as if the MWC office scheduled New Mexico ahead of the Falcons in order for Boise State to get some practice defending the triple option before facing the, at the time, superior opponent.

New Mexico was supposed to be a glorified scrimmage for the Broncos.

  28. tom November 20, 2015 5:14 pm

” If the students don’t want to pay for athletics, they shouldn’t be required to do that”

I suppose the same argument could be applied to the psychology department – never could figure out if Jung or Freud was legit.

  29. z November 20, 2015 5:21 pm

So if we go option Boise going nuts.

  30. NorthShoreFan November 20, 2015 5:28 pm

    Heaven is in your mind….

If students don’t want the pass for athletics then don’t give it to them. The fee seems very reasonable….and it’s on a sliding scale.

  31. NorthShoreFan November 20, 2015 5:30 pm

    Autonomy….you run your own show.
Semi….you got strings attached…what does the UH want?
Most kids semi autonomous. They rent outside but come home for dinner and laundry and some spending money.

  32. winning November 20, 2015 5:32 pm

    N. Chow’s firing was the best thing that happened to UH. They should disband the BOR as well. No more Dobys, Greenfields, olympic jocks, crackseed, punahou grads (whateveer happened to Iolani grads?) and Von apples.

  33. z November 20, 2015 5:35 pm

    22. Actually it was in the disparity of fouls in which the wahine came up on the short end. It was something that Beeman said she would have to look into after the season ended for the wahine.

  34. cocobean November 20, 2015 5:59 pm

cappie, Z. To me one weakness of the Wahine is the lack of consistent 3 pt shooting. The teams in the BWC zoned us most of the time while Beeman prefers to play an aggressive man v man. I didn’t notice a foul disparity but if there was it may because our style of D v the typical BWC D.

I’m interested to see our pt guard play tonight. Harris and Wembly have some experience but were so so last year. King can play pt if need be.

  35. Shoko November 20, 2015 6:09 pm

Off we go into the wild blue yonder, climbing high into the sky….Maybe playing on the blue turf isn’t as difficult as some have said.

Maybe the $50/semester activity should be going towards the faculties salary instead of athletics?

  36. z November 20, 2015 6:16 pm

    34. Against St Marys free throw attemps were 49 for opponent, 23 for us. Against CSUN free throw attempts were 34 for opponent and 16 for us. These were the 2 games that cut our season short. We are stocked inside. Key players I see this year are Ashleigh, Sara and Destiny. We have many bigs to go to.

  37. Inyoface November 20, 2015 6:17 pm

Trow in Beau Reilly. He needs some game reps.

  38. Shoko November 20, 2015 6:38 pm

Since Reilly is officially the backup now he should see some time on the field during scrub time unless its a close game and there’s a chance to win.

  39. el burro sabio November 20, 2015 6:59 pm

Just add $50 to tuition and give it to Matlin.

  40. 3-Prong November 20, 2015 7:18 pm

Kalei Adolpho looks like she slimmed down a little, looks just as strong, but a lot quicker. Great that she doesn’t have to play center anymore.

  41. 3-Prong November 20, 2015 7:18 pm

Is the highschool game on Livestream?

  42. 3-Prong November 20, 2015 7:28 pm

Don’t fool around with a mimiscule $50 student fee. Go straight to $200-$300. Student and their parents will complain no matter if it’s $10 or $300. Paying the feels will encourage them to attend since it already anyway. When my daughter went to Univ od San Francisco they included fees to ride the public transportation system. I encoraged her to use it since it was paid for. I don’t want to put the burden on only the students. I think ticket prices should be raised, with PPV taking the biggest increases. Hawaii loves football and Hawaii is willing to pay to watch exciting June Jones football.

  43. Derek November 20, 2015 8:23 pm

I was surprised that Air Force beat Boise St. in Boise. Falcons killed them with big pass plays. Also, impressed with South Florida and because Dick Tomey is helping there. Great day overall, Warriors still undefeated and Lakers lost again.

  44. papajoe2 November 20, 2015 9:25 pm

I noticed that the Kahuku kicker’s plant foot is pointing to where the ball went (to his right). He missed one way wide right and the rest of the kicks were right, just inside the goal post.

  45. 808 November 20, 2015 10:54 pm

“I think ticket prices should be raised, with PPV taking the biggest increases. Hawaii loves football and Hawaii is willing to pay to watch exciting June Jones football.”
    ——————

In June Jones 9 year at Hawaii from the ’99 – 07 season, how many sell outs did UH have?

With cost of living in Hawaii, there is a breaking point for everyone. True, there will always be those fans who go to the game regardless of the cost. The problem will be there isn’t enough of those fans to pay at any cost.

In the end, football is still football. It has a price people are willing to pay like any goods or service in the market place. If you price it higher than it’s value, people will stop buying tickets. With the current price of UH football, even if UH went 13-0, you probably still wouldn’t be able to have a sell out on a consistent basis.

  46. z November 20, 2015 11:12 pm

Said before Kahuku was above the rest. Watched them physically dismantle their opponents all season. Best D won.

  47. cappie the dog November 20, 2015 11:22 pm

    cocobean-

I think Karaitiana should drive to the basket more.

She should also take more mid-range jumpers.

    It’s not a slump.

She is not a three-point shooter.

But she is the three-point shooter by default.

Wimberly can hit it. Lacks confidence though.

Coach Beeman is normally in control of her emotions on the sidelines, but after King’s second pass to Mount Kilimanjaro, she stomped her foot.

When you sit close to the Na Wahine bench, you have to be aware that the players’ families abound.

My cousin and I have a running dialogue during the game, but we were careful not to say anything negative about Brianna Harris. I think her mother was sitting behind me.

  48. cappie the dog November 20, 2015 11:25 pm

    Triple option 2
    Boise State 0

  49. cocobean November 21, 2015 12:24 am

cappie. Morris, Toeaina and Adolpho have improved. Point guard play was bad. Harris, Wembly and #20 were ineffective in running the offense and controlling tempo. They seemed rushed and couldn’t due much when closely guarded. King and Toeaina were better at starting the offense but are not true point guards. They just good around players who have decent handles.

Based on tonight we are going to rely heavily on defense to win. The half court offense is primarily working the ball into the paint. We may be in trouble if a team packs it in and force us to shoot from mid range and out. I think we took less than 10 shots from 10 feet and out.

  50. Maddog50 November 21, 2015 4:46 am

Do not expect a win today but hey anything is possible. SJSU has to win but how mentally tough will they be playing a 2-9 team. We will see. Regarding the Matlin Plan one word underfunded. The activity fee in my mind should be increased immediately and be system wide. The 10 campuses that are under the umbrella are supported by the UH budget…..quit pondering pausing and consternation just do it. That increase alone is not going to “pay the tab” just make it more attainable. Again for the in excess of the 1 Billion dollar spend 60 to 70% pays faculty and staff. Concerning sell out crowds. With a behemoth of a stadium for this Mid Major level a good or great turn out would be a steady diet of 30+K. Boise has sold out just 1 time since it expanded to 38k. 30 to 35 K would be the envy of most schools including anawfullot of the So called Power 5-hey lets get a win today-that’s my kind of fun!!!!
