Game day: San Jose State

The old man must be snoring because it’s been raining (islandwide) and pouring (on the Windward side) the past three days.

It it keeps up, expect a running battle. In what appears to be this season’s theme, the Warriors will face another quality running back. Tyler Ervin is a quick and tough runner who also is a threat as a receiver and returner.

The Warriors might utilize the ground game more because 1) There’s no experienced quarterback behind starter Ikaika Woolsey, 2) Paul Harris has been on a tear the past two games, and 3) A ball-control offense will help a defense that was on the field for 93 plays (including seven plays that did not count officially because of penalties).

Oh, if we had a dollar for every clever person who says tonight: “There were more people at the Saint Louis-Kahuku game last night … “

  2. Stephen Tsai November 21, 2015 9:04 am

Then again, I remember the late 1970s when the Oahu Prep Bowl used to draw more than 30,000.
One year, I think it was the Punahou-Waianae game in ’77, our social club had to help clean Aloha Stadium. (Here’s the trick: Sweep the rubbish forward until there are huge piles in the front row, then gather the trash and place them in garbage bags.) We left the stadium sometime around 3 in the morning.
But, alas, like all good clubs, we did make the “friendship circle.” (Yes, kids, go ask somebody old who went to a town school about social clubs.)

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

Great games last night. Hail to the Red Raiders!…magnificent effort! The Northside is where it’s at!

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  4. NorthShoreFan November 21, 2015 9:14 am

Interesting game. Old style smash mouth football. run, run, run, run…das how they used to play it long ago.

  5. orioles4eva November 21, 2015 9:40 am

I love football, look forward to the start of the season, but the rainbow warriors have been so bad I just want this season to be over. Hopefully the kane and wahine basketball teams do well.

  6. Old School Dave November 21, 2015 9:50 am

The weather seems to match the mood of things. However, I still look at the effort given by the players. Julian Gener is an example of a student-athlete who could have just given up, but he’s still out there giving his all, in spite of the losing record, fan disinterest, and Pilikia. Gener, and others like him are the type of people you will see get ahead in life with that type of attitude, long after football is done. That’s just what I see.

    We can be The Citadel.

  13. cappie the dog November 21, 2015 10:30 am

There is this extremely obnoxious guy on SI.com named “Howard” who is so pro-SEC. This has got to be eating him alive.

    Florida Atlantic runs the spread.

They have an option component, right?

I am sitting in a library.

I can’t see what Florida Atlantic looks like.

  14. papajoe2 November 21, 2015 10:33 am

Not sure, but isn’t Cal Lee 1 year from being “vested” for state retirement? Depending on who is the head coach, would he consider returning to UH as an assistant coach? I didn’t want to say anything before their big game because of the distraction that it may lead to.

  15. cocobean November 21, 2015 10:38 am

Talk about imposing their will on a team. Kahuku must have been fired up all night long. One of my basketball buddies skipped the Wahine’s game to watch his alma mater St. Louis. He was kinda sour grapes about it this morning said the Saint’s offense came in over confident and got knocked out….like Rousey. He is convinced the Saints would reverse the score if there were a rematch.

  16. Frannyk November 21, 2015 11:41 am

    Papajoe2 #12.

Cal is the king at St. Louis and in the eyes of prep football in Hawaii. He would be trading his crown for a lesser position. He’s a big fish in a smaller pond now. He just got back with St. Louis and I think it would be detrimental for him to leave again. He’s 69 years old. It may be his last job before he retires.

As a St. Louis alum, I for one would like to see him stay.

  17. oneseason November 21, 2015 11:44 am

The Rainbow Warrior team has played 4 years with a pretty much constant influx of new coaches and new approaches. I was pretty disappointed to hear the Sports Animals (mostly CH) complaining about how players had given up and were not playing hard. Considering the number of Rainbow Warriors that have been injured this season, that just sounds like more shifting of blame from the UH leaders that failed to provide adequate coaching support to the players for the last 4 years. I hope the team goes out and does their best for these next two games, and think they deserve a lot of thanks for sticking with the program.

  18. islandman November 21, 2015 11:54 am

    8. …Option offense at G. Tech (Paul Johnson) flexbone being bent out of shape, loses again (Miami 38-21). 3-8, 1-6 ACC, last place in Coastal Division.

  19. cappie the dog November 21, 2015 12:00 pm

    16.

    I know.

Paul Johnson has only two transcendent years at Georgia Tech.

If this was his won-loss record last year, after a slew of 6 and 7 win seasons, he would definitely be on the hot seat.

    Point taken.

    No argument.

  20. SteveM November 21, 2015 12:07 pm

I watched half (on and off) of the Air Force at Boise game last night. Great win by AFA on Boise’s blue turf! If AFA didn’t get picked off 4 times in the 2nd half, they might have been able to hang 50 points on Boise. Flashback to the UH-AFA game… Norm Chow can take a little solace in the fact that it was not a total implosion by UH– mostly a big explosion by AFA.

  21. J-FORCE November 21, 2015 12:49 pm

Coach Naole please play wr’s ryan pasoquen, ammon barker, rb ‘s justin vele, pereese joas, lb’s mageo, furuta – these guys are making plays during fall camp.

    Go Warriors

  22. Balko November 21, 2015 12:51 pm

Regarding increasing student fees to fund UH sports (but let’s be honest, football), let’s remember that when a state agrees to establish a university, it enters into a service industry: i.e., the taxpayers act at the behest of the students and faculty.

The implicit assumption in the creation of a state university is the students and faculty will improve society at large and the taxpaying citizens will assume the costs associated with the agreement.

The prevailing model of universities is broad, sweeping independence: this assures faculty members that political influence large and small will not hinder the pursuit of intellectual development.

Given these parameters, Hawaii’s taxpayers either need to decide they no longer wish to have a university because these terms are largely immutable.

Sports are an ancillary proposition that may be maintained by a university when funds permit. In Hawaii, they currently do not, and I have long argued, they will not under the current trends (crushing state pension obligations, constantly shrinking tax base, and an aging population on a fixed income, etc).

Students cannot be seen as walking ATM machines to fund the frivolous entertainment of others. Many students in Hawaii are low income, single parents, veterans, and/or otherwise financially constrained. Others have parents who are stretched thin trying to afford an opportunity to improve their child’s life. Very few students at UH are well heeled enough to reach into their pocket to pay for your entertainment.

A state university is a service industry; you are here to serve its customers and those customers are the students.

  23. islandman November 21, 2015 1:30 pm

    18. …. Air Force had more yards passing than Boise 279 to 237, including two long TD passes of 67 and 51 yds. Total net yds. 607 to 378 .

  24. oneseason November 21, 2015 1:56 pm

Washington up 28-0 over Oregon State at the end of the first quarter. Peterson looking good this week. Curious if halftime adjustments will doom the Huskies like last week. Same players in both halves, but day and night performance differences. Sure hope AD Matlin picks wisely.

  25. Shoko November 21, 2015 2:52 pm

Things to say if you want to hurt your draft stock.

“A fired-up Ezekiel Elliott talked about playing hurt, ripped the Ohio State play calling and then said this was his last home game with the program. “There’s no chance I’m coming back next year.””

What a game going on, Miss State at Arkansas. Exciting bad to back scoring. Now this is uptempo O, UH OC could learn something, but too late. The Warriors need about 30 TDs in the next 2 games to get to the 75 TD goal.

  34. Willie November 21, 2015 5:37 pm

Have to repost had the wrong email. What a game going on with Miss State at Arkansas. Exciting back to back scoring, worth watching. Now this is uptempo O, UH OC could learn something, but too late. Warriors need to score about 30 TDs in the next 2 games to get to the 75 TD goal.

  35. Willie November 21, 2015 6:02 pm

Wow, 14 total TDs between the 2 teams. Miss State by 1, blocked Arkansas short field goal attempt with about 41 seconds left. Interesting is that Arkansas ran 3 straight plays up the middle to have MSU burn all 3 of its timeouts and keep the ball in the middle of the field. Hey Chow, guess the positioning of the ball for the short kick important enough for the Razorbacks; but not for you the anointed supposed know it all.

  36. azwarrior22 November 21, 2015 6:15 pm

Already down 7-0…let’s see what kind of character this team has.

  37. azwarrior22 November 21, 2015 6:20 pm

Wow, gets stripped of the ball…no discipline.

  38. oneseason November 21, 2015 6:21 pm

4 seasons of putting up with this … I think the team has plenty of character. When UH leadership decided not to invest in the team 4 years ago, they set the ball in motion. It isn’t on the players.

  39. azwarrior22 November 21, 2015 6:25 pm

    We stink.

  40. mytake November 21, 2015 6:28 pm

I’d like to thank the previous seach committee for this years team

  41. Buffoman November 21, 2015 6:28 pm

  42. azwarrior22 November 21, 2015 6:29 pm

    Bring in Beau

    We’re punting…we stink.

  44. azwarrior22 November 21, 2015 6:31 pm

San Jose St. 2 touches, 2 TDs.
Hawaii 2 touches, 1 fumble and 1 punt

  45. azwarrior22 November 21, 2015 6:32 pm

    Bring in Beau !!!

  46. Buffoman November 21, 2015 6:32 pm

Woolsey is not the answer for QB. Should be interesting next year as to who will be QB.

  47. mytake November 21, 2015 6:34 pm

UH has to stop the outside plays. Their getting beaten out there all year.

  48. azwarrior22 November 21, 2015 6:39 pm

    3 touches, 3 TDs…this game is over.

    Bring in Beau !!!

  49. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 6:42 pm

Looks like SJSU is playing 7 on 7 against us SMH… C mon UH!!!

  50. MAKA November 21, 2015 6:44 pm

Seems we are getting beat deep over and over and over again.
Do we have a defensive back coach ?

  51. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 6:44 pm

Nice pass play on first down.. Next play.. Run up the middle SMH.. C mon offense!

  52. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 6:46 pm

MAKA.. I don’t think we got a DB coach. #1 for UH gives up TD after TD every week yet he starts every game SMH

  53. 808 November 21, 2015 6:46 pm

Someone on yesterday’s blog suggested increasing ticket prices and Oceanic PPV to help with the deficit.

    For this?

If UH gave away 50,000 free tickets, you still wouldn’t see a sell out crowd.

Yes, this team is 4 years in the making.

  54. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 6:50 pm

After watching last nights HS championship game.. I think VaVae Tata should be on the UH staff as a defensive coordinator or hopefully head coach.. His defense was lights out & he did it in his first season. JMO

  55. azwarrior22 November 21, 2015 6:59 pm

Hawaii defense can’t make a stop. Hawaii offense can’t score.

  56. azwarrior22 November 21, 2015 7:00 pm

We are getting blown out by a crappy team.

  57. Hank November 21, 2015 7:02 pm

I hope Bailey and Mason enjoyed their week off.

  58. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 7:02 pm

This is getting embarrassing.. I don’t think we will win our game next neither

  59. azwarrior22 November 21, 2015 7:06 pm

    Bring in Beau !!

  60. oneseason November 21, 2015 7:11 pm

As I recall, Hawaii (under Chow) has lost to every MWC team that finished their season with 3 or more conference wins (and I think they only beat one team with 2 wins). SJSU currently has 3 MWC wins.

  61. Hank November 21, 2015 7:11 pm

Does Ikaika have a relative living in LV betting against us?

  62. azwarrior22 November 21, 2015 7:11 pm

    Bring in Beau already…

  63. MAKA November 21, 2015 7:12 pm

Even interception, was a good drive.
They just did not end it right.

  64. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 7:12 pm

Of course he’d throw a pick to end the best drive of the night. Let’s see what Reilly can do already

  65. MAKA November 21, 2015 7:15 pm

Warrior Fan – agree with you.
The last game is in jeopardy now, if this continues.

  66. Legislature November 21, 2015 7:15 pm

Beau’s a right winger he can’t throw to the far left
    No one will be open

  67. z November 21, 2015 7:16 pm

    Put in Mageo.

  68. MAKA November 21, 2015 7:17 pm

    Close your eyes time.
    They in a passing mode.

  69. Legislature November 21, 2015 7:19 pm

No worries , this is going to be the greatest comeback in UH history

  70. MAKA November 21, 2015 7:22 pm

    Lets’ see – new math – 7 x 5 = 35 for first half.
    7 x 5 = 35 second half.
    14 x 5 = 70 end of game.

    Or maybe something like that.

  71. Buffoman November 21, 2015 7:23 pm

Do we have real defensive backs or do we just have folks in uniforms on the field? Wow, this is really embarrassing.

  72. S.peezy55 November 21, 2015 7:26 pm

We need a whole lot of Kleenex for this blog. I get it, we suck. But what’s up with all the crying.

  73. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 7:27 pm

C mon defense. I mean 13 seconds left, SJSU has no timeouts remaining.. We should’ve known they were going to do a play action pass because they wouldn’t take the risks of getting stopped on the run & not have enough time to bring the FG unit on..

  74. mytake November 21, 2015 7:28 pm

Forget JJ. This team needs Nick Saban

  75. May Kay November 21, 2015 7:29 pm

    New QB? Something? Anything?

  76. z November 21, 2015 7:30 pm

Can we get Vai Tata to run the defense the next game.

  77. z November 21, 2015 7:31 pm

    We need to recruit.

  78. 3-Prong November 21, 2015 7:31 pm

808: That was me. The best is yet to come for this team but they need financial support in order to get there. You cant expect the cart to get there before the horse.

Looks like another rough night tonight at Aloha but a new coach is in the works…

    Let’s Go Bows!

  79. Moocher November 21, 2015 7:31 pm

    It’s just awful already.
To top it off can’t even find the game anywhere on the internet. I guess no one wants to waste their broadband carrying the game–this team is that bad. There are some good, some great players, but a god awful team.

  80. Buffoman November 21, 2015 7:35 pm

Yep, bring Saban. Maybe Pete Carroll. Wow, complete overhaul is needed. Don’t know if anyone can fix this funk. Yikes.

I am a fan and will still support the team, even this bad. It is after all the only team that we have.

  81. Inyoface November 21, 2015 7:35 pm

    We stay winning?

  82. z November 21, 2015 7:36 pm

1/2 time I switch the station. All I here is Potter this Potter that. They got to change everything. Even the announcers. Will switch back later. Just don’t want to listen to the ….

  83. oneseason November 21, 2015 7:37 pm

At least for me, the takeaway for this is that AD Matlin needs to convince UH leadership that trying to fix UH football on the cheap will more than likely fail, and result in further losses … both win-wise and finance-wise. AD’s Donovan and Ben Jay no doubt tried and certainly failed to convince them to open the purse strings. I wouldn’t want to guess what the lowest attendance will be next year if a solid coaching staff isn’t hired. A name people know for head coach won’t be enough if we don’t get wins next year.

  84. z November 21, 2015 7:38 pm

I will just watch the oline. Seem to be the ones worth watching.

  85. Da Punchbowl Kid November 21, 2015 7:38 pm

    #79 – Nope.

  86. Da Punchbowl Kid November 21, 2015 7:40 pm

    # 78- Nope. Sorry.

  87. Moocher November 21, 2015 7:40 pm

it’s half time…plea prep Beau, things cannot be any worse.

might as well go high school style and let the seniors and scout team guys play already

  88. Old School Dave November 21, 2015 7:45 pm

Bruce Barnum, HC Portland State (9-2). His PSU team also beat FBS schools Waazu and North Texas (66-7) this season. Barnum currently earns $187,000.

  89. greenthumb November 21, 2015 7:45 pm

80, agree with all your points.

  90. Inyoface November 21, 2015 7:47 pm

TD Warriors! Good job O line & Paul Harris!

  92. oneseason November 21, 2015 7:52 pm

  93. z November 21, 2015 7:53 pm

  94. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 7:54 pm

  95. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 7:55 pm

  96. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 7:57 pm

  97. Da Punchbowl Kid November 21, 2015 7:59 pm

    Be like Paul, y’all!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  98. Willie November 21, 2015 7:59 pm

It’s been about 43 years of watching UH Rainbows/Warriors football, 40 of these in person. The last 3 have been via the tube, PPV and Nattional TV. IMO Woolsey is the 2nd worst UH QB I have seen. The only one a peg below on the bottom rung would be Alex Kaloi and that broken down Hula (Model) T offense. Woolsey gets the edge because he is faster and can run a bit. This is embarrassing, but not unexpected after seeing the Spartans 4 times on TV and each time they seem to be a little bit better. Tonight is a contrast of two teams moving in very different directions.

  99. azwarrior22 November 21, 2015 8:01 pm

Bring in Reilly already. We already know what Ikaika can’t do.

  100. Inyoface November 21, 2015 8:05 pm

    Beau knows

  101. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 8:06 pm

  103. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 8:09 pm

No to JJ.. Kalani Sitake or Salavea.. Bring on Vae Tata for our DC..

  104. z November 21, 2015 8:12 pm

    Refs still no like UH.

  105. Buffoman November 21, 2015 8:13 pm

We need a defensive minded coach. Wonder if Tata applied.

  106. Kryon November 21, 2015 8:15 pm

Sorry 3 prong, those days are long gone. Every defense in nation plays against a wide open attack these days. Those days wour offense was more on the unique side. It’s gonna come down to recruiting for whoever the next coach is, not schemes. IMO. For recruits, we are going to have to go all in. Better facilities, huge ocean fronting stadium or something, better campus and classrooms. Etc. My friend had an idea I thought was cool. Build a new stadium inside diamond Head. That would b cool. Imagine the rumble coming from within the crater? Volcanic eruption!

  107. Buffoman November 21, 2015 8:17 pm

Lance Williams has hurt us on a few occasions. Discipline not there.

  108. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 8:22 pm

TD! Hey I’ll take it lol! Stubblefield with the after burners!!

  109. 3-Prong November 21, 2015 8:22 pm

Hmmmm, apologies to Mr d1 okole for those tickets I donated to you tonight. Must be rough out there…. Thank you for supporting our boys though.

  110. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 8:23 pm

102.. I’m thinking the same as you.. Tata looks like a good candidate!

  111. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 8:25 pm

    Reilly is warming up..

  112. Buffoman November 21, 2015 8:34 pm

If the defense cannot hold it would be that every time SJSU touched the ball they have scored a TD. Wow, awful defense to this point. Can they stop them?

  113. z November 21, 2015 8:35 pm

We get to see their punter.

  114. Warrior fan November 21, 2015 8:35 pm

Hey I think Tom Mason read my comment about bringing the pressure on 3rd & long lol

  115. A-House November 21, 2015 8:59 pm

    left before the half again!

just awful offensive and defensive play calling – offense up the middle, up the middle – defense seemed to be in the wrong alignment many times — where are the 4 LBers??? many calls only 1ILB or none over the middle? where is the “safety on the long passes?

SJS tailback is running along the LOS to is right – UH LB & safety standing there like stones — pass to RB for a long gain! and SJS QB up the empty middle for 2 TD and long runs — OC an DC must go along with all the position coaches — oh, forgot they already received their termination papers

Naole calls the team over after the 4th TD and yelling at the players for 35 seconds then walks away — he should have told the players those who don’t have the will to play and play smart and hard — leave the bench and walk to the lockers – remove your uniforms and catch a ride back to UH on their own – same goes for the coaches – nothing to lose

#99 is young and does not possess the strength nor skill to break away from the LT who grads his jersey above the numbers and controls his movements — totally ineffective except, perhaps, valuable experience — same goes for #96

on the 4th TD, I don’t know what the defensive call was, but the entire DL was moving back and forth along the LOS, no attempt to penetrate to the QB who has all the time to hit his WR in the corner of the end zone.

is it the coaches who don’t know how to teach or the players who aren’t really D1 caliber or worse a combo ?

this season, after the last 3, have been so FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I go to work on Mondays with mental fatigue.

those players not pulling their weight and strut around cause they play should look into a mirror and see that they are here because NO Power5 or MWC team wanted them — wait, did you say “harsh”? — no it’s REALITY!!!!!!!!!!!!

we are giving away, if we are lucky, 6 tickets to the last game – any takers??????

this is the worst coaching !! from top to the bottom !! hawaii seem like only has 5 plays in the play book !! run up the middle if works same play again !! the head coach try to win !! hello was a blow out aready at half !! shame on you not getting Reilly in the game

  122. Derek November 21, 2015 9:56 pm

Hawaii will be playing Louisiana Monroe for the Bottom 10 championship next Saturday. Put your money on the home team to stink up the joint. After we lost big leads to New Mexico and Nevada I said we will not win another game. So far, I’ve been correct. The bad thing is that a lot of fans didn’t want to go to the stadium anymore. It’s very pathetic. We can only hope that next year will will have renewed conviction that things will get better. It can’t get any worse than now.

JMHO, Ikaika tries, but he’s not the answer for our QB. If he’s the starting QB next year, we will get the same results.

  123. Jack Flash November 21, 2015 10:12 pm

We are probably the worst team in all of college football currently. Looking forward to next year. Aloha!

  124. cocobean November 21, 2015 10:40 pm

Small but loyal crowd. There wasn’t a mass exodus at the end of the 3 Q like there was at most other games. People left in trickles throughout the 2nd half but a good %age of the crowd that was there at the start was there at the end.

  125. cappie the dog November 21, 2015 10:52 pm

    118.

McKenzie Milton was offered a scholarship to the Naval Academy.

He can back-up Woolsey if AD Matlin hires their offensive coordinator.

New Mexico let me down today, but The Citadel and Georgia Southern(in defeat) who otherwise would have no business being in a competitive game against SEC competition, did so, because the triple option, when run right, is the great equalizer.

Woolsey throws like an option quarterback.

  126. cocobean November 21, 2015 10:59 pm

No knock on our QB corp but in my opinion whoever the next coach is has to either be a QB whisperer who can coach up the returnees and the current commit (Milton) or be able to bring a savvy QB who can run his system. My thought is we haven’t had good QB play under Chow. His three transfer starters didn’t have a lot of experience coming in and didn’t show much poise when facing live bullets. This is Ikaika’s 2nd go around but still hasn’t shown he has command of his position. He has yet to show he can lead. May be for him a third time will be a charm.

  127. clyde November 21, 2015 11:36 pm

No matter whom is chosen as the next head coach, I hope he runs an offense that can utilize Zwahlen’s talent (providing he doesn’t transfer). As a top 150 player on ESPN’s 300, Zwahlen has the best credentials coming out of high school of all the QBs on the team. I’d like to see him develop under a system that fits his skill set. He could be a four-year starter.

  128. Kryon November 22, 2015 12:25 am

No to JJ. But if its between JJ n the triple option. JJ by a million miles. We have been put to sleep for 4yrs. Don’t want to sleep any longer. Triple option is flat out booooring.

Of the 11,625 turnout for last nights thriller at Aloha Stadium
How much were San Jose State fans

  130. Makai November 22, 2015 1:37 am

    My observations:
While tailgating my friends and I realized that these people among us are not the bandwagon fans. I was shocked to see Zwhalen suited up. I guess emergency QB situation. The coaching staff was willing to burn his red shirt. I just watched the post game interviews and some of the assistant coaches are being accused of checking out as well. I don’t know what to say anymore. This was not a good San Jose team, but we made them look like it. I didn’t think the program couldn’t dig itself into a deeper hole. This one hurt, but team stayed out for Alma Mater. To all the die hard Warrior fans one more game till we can close out the Norm Chow era, but I’m starting to think we will see the remenents of his destruction for a few more seasons. Try to stay positive, Aloha

    Re: Ikaika Woolsey

    This was from Hawaiiathletics.com:

“…rated as the No. 7 pro-style quarterback nationally and the 101st-ranked recruit in the state of California by 247sports.com…”

With the right coaching, he could have been a good QB. Instead, like the rest of this team, they are not playing to their full potential. I hope the next HC brings in proven assistant coaches at the WR, QB positions. Heck, I hope all the coaches are experienced coaches.

For the grad assistants, let them start at the bottom. The primary question to the other coaches every morning before practice should be, “How do you want your coffee, with cream or without cream?”

Grad assistants will eventually be assistant coaches. But, they should never be called upon to handle more than they can deliver. There is one positive to this team. In several weeks, a new HC will be chosen.

  134. Tempmanoa November 22, 2015 5:51 am

The next coach needs to be a rebuilder, and not just of the football tream, but a rebuilder of the relationship between community, University, and the State Governemnt which needs to subsidize the program like all the other Mountain West Conference states do– or just forget the idea of a football tem. The next coach needs to recruit– primarily in Hawaii, it will not help to bring in someone who recruits Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Ohio– because once they get here, they will be cutoff from the ability to keep in touch with recruits and high school programs there and compete with the coaches who recruit these areas everyday year-round. You must recruit Hawaii successfully or you will never have a successful program– no program can recruit enough quality players a few days a year from 2500-5,000 miles away– you might try a handful, but not the numbers you need for success.

  135. Maddog50 November 22, 2015 6:58 am

We are all gonna die and go to hell-no just need a new coach staf and a good recruiting class or 2. With the attendance so low no moral victory but UNLV vs SDSU had 14k, Nevada vs Utah State 18k both on Senior night. Lotsa building to do but it will get done. How bout a win against UL Monroe-

  136. Old School Dave November 22, 2015 7:08 am

Oregon OC Scott Frost has done a good job with one and done transfer Vernon Adams (from EWU) after the Ducks shaky start (4-3, now 8-3) this season. I wonder if Frost would be interested? Wouldn’t hurt to at least ask. Ikaika could surprise many with the right position coach in 2016.

Speaking of EWU, they just finished their season at 6-5 (admittedly a down year after winning the Big Sky the past 3 seasons) and I wonder if their head coach might be making a trip here for some business?

  137. Old School Dave November 22, 2015 7:13 am

Under all of the gloom, UH does have a near 1,000 yard RB in Paul Harris. Props to Paul and his effort! The next coaching staff will need to utilize Paul to take advantage of his talent. Someone to build things on. RS Freshman LB Jahlani Tavai also showed what he’s capable of. Julian Gener led the team in tackles, once again.

  138. Casual Observer November 22, 2015 7:31 am

As this season comes to a painful end, it seems the weaknesses were in the play calling and coaching staff. Air Force, a running team, passes for 279 yds against Boise St. and most of the passes are lob passes where the receiver is fairly wide open. In the Warrior scheme, receivers are being tackled as they try to make the catch. Our Warrior players are as physical and talented as others in the MWC but even Buckeyes talent can’t win without the right calls and in the right position to succeed (E. Elliot).

  139. Old School Dave November 22, 2015 7:32 am

ASUH doing anything to drum up support for the team among the students? Too busy playing video games? At least the team gathered to sing the alma mater after last night’s game.

  140. Buffoman November 22, 2015 7:33 am

The o-line is finally coming into their own. Harris’s numbers are a result of a better run blocking effort. There are some positives. If our receivers could have gotten better separation and caught the ball, we could have been better. Unfortunately, we were not on the same page all year.

I like Naeole. If he had a stronger supporting crew, who knows what could have happened.

  141. Maddog50 November 22, 2015 7:42 am

Regarding the student engagement, even though I think he is a little crazy….PJ Fleck of Western Michigan wants to meet each and every student to engage them in supporting the program-realize it is lofty goal but intentions are good. Regarding Paul Harris he might exceed 1100 yards with a good performance against UL Monroe. For you long time supporters he is very close to the 2nd coming of Albert Holmes. A speed back who runs rather upright with scooting spin ability who can cut get free and sprint. He very much resembles Allberts form. Good luck to him and all others in the close out-I too agree there is a lot more to this roster than has been displayed-an awful lot of it youthful and still developing-

  142. Legistlature November 22, 2015 8:05 am

This is the year we need the High School All Star team from the mainland to come to Aloha Stadium to take on Hawaii’s best All Star team. I like our chances. Hope it happens, if it does I’ll be in attendance.

  143. Old School Dave November 22, 2015 8:07 am

Urban Meyer was credited with creating the MUSS at Utah during the 2 years he was there. Now, it’s a major factor at games there. Need a coach who will get out and encourage the students to come to the games. ASUH is lame (to con a term from young folks).

  144. Legislature November 22, 2015 8:23 am

The mainland all stars probably not coming this year. They know the year when Hawaii will be loaded with talent. They will probably send a team the next year

  145. cocobean November 22, 2015 9:03 am

#125. I’d say around 50 or less were sitting in the section reserved for visiting fans.

#129. That’s how he billed coming in. His stature doesn’t fit the mode of the classic stand in the pocket and deliver the ball pro-style QB like Grahma and Wittek. He’s just over 6 ft you’d think he’d more of a gamer type like Moniz and Graves. I’ll repeat myself when I say he has a low aptitude for extending plays and a low aptitude for running. Naeole was pretty blunt today in Rearson’s article. In regards to Woolsey he said something like – “he’s a tough kid but he doesn’t play smart.”

  146. Shoko November 22, 2015 9:40 am

Surprised Reilly didn’t get any play time when the game was firmly out of reach just so he can get some experience in case Woolsey gets injured in the last game.

Will be interesting to see who ends up transferring after this season. Something tells me there are quite a few players that are unhappy.

  147. 808 November 22, 2015 9:42 am

    141,

That may be so. But, with good coaching, players can play above what they are capable of playing. It’s not like he came into the program a scrub.

UH can bring in all the talent they want. But, with no proper coaching to place them in position to succeed, they will end up with all the potential and nothing to show for it. And, in the end we all will say, well maybe he wasn’t as good as he was billed to be.

  148. Shoko November 22, 2015 9:56 am

Last time LA-Monroe played Hawaii (Vonappen era) was in Nov. 22, 1997 and won 23-20. Hawaii ended up finishing 3-9 record. Statistics look kind of similar with this season.

  149. Old School Dave November 22, 2015 9:59 am

    Iowa State eyeing Kenny Niumatalolo.

    http://footballscoop.com/news/where-iowa-state-might-look-for-their-next-head-coach/

With a fired coach, losing record, and pilikia, you have the chance of increased player attrition (based on who the new hire will be), along with academic casualties when players don’t hit the books or let things slide with all of the negativity involved.

I haven’t been back on this blog for quite some time. I have to say though, the team has packed it up for the season. Glad I decided to stay home last night. As far as the new couch is concerned, I would like to see June/Rolo/Miano in some way shape or form. They could also bring in former players Chang/Stutzman as young hungry assistants.
My youngest son, and partner for games (we are season ticket holders) is rooting for Niumatulolo/Jasper style offense. He’s 9 and has never seen either offense live ( kids and you tube. lol.)
