For the final 32 minutes yesterday, the Warriors did not play well, did not coach well and, during an exchange with the side judge, did not argue well.
That’s on them.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, they are not well. Two players have played the entire season despite foot fractures. A running back has been running on two sprained ankles. A walk-on freshman earned significant time on the defensive line yesterday. The two starting safeties in training camp did not play yesterday because of injuries.
And so forth.
With five games remaining, four of which are at home, the Warriors are out of mulligans. It’s up to them to write their own story.

Not ruling in favor of Kemp scoring six looks bad because it affects the line.
You wonder if there are some machinations at work when you can’t get a call right after the replay booth official has enough time to make the correction.
That missed extra point that was called good(I think the game was Syracuse/Ohio) was akin to the replay booth official reviewing the Zapruder film and saying that the president wasn’t shot.
My feelings on replay is damn it all to hell.
Bad calls are part of the game.
At Na Wahine volleyball games, it’s kind of fun when the official gets it wrong.
You get to shout, “The ball was in!”
And you play on.
Prior to playing Michigan State in the Aloha Bowl, I recall a Oregon State running back being called for a fumble in the end zone when he was clearly down.
That would have been a lead-changing TD.

I would add that the nature of the game is to play through adversity (including missed calls/wrong calls).
I don’t see that the team is playing inspired after the first half. What’s missing is leadership.
So we need to win out. I love redemption stories. All we need is the next win to start the momentum. Let’s do it!
I feel so piss off NCAA it taking so long to do with university that did the same thing like Hawaii. They’re two university right now like SMU and Louisville and should be lots more schools out there!. Why they’re only point the finger on Hawaii. Because it a school in the Pacific and always had money problems!. They won’t do anything to the big university in the mainland. Because of the money and won’t give them more then 10 years on suspensions! They might give them 4 years like USC did receive. Now! How long will it takes for the University of Hawaii AD to find a new football Head Coach? They have to understand that the way there going. The football program aren’t making money for the school in the way there are going every years! Because no peoples to go to see or spending money on a losting team play every years!. It’s better to spend my money on good things!. So, I would like to see what new AD will do now?. I’m pulling on my tickets for the Hawaii football game against the UNLV in November 7. I would like to know how much would a person would pay for it?!. I got to say this now? AD Martin get your butt up off the chair and do something about the football program right away! If Chow is back for the 2016 season, I think UH should play the games at the Ching Field. The stands will be mostly packed. UH will get to keep the parking revenue. And the state can save $300M or so since no need for new stadium construction.
It would cost the State $1 billion to contract for a new stadium and $1.5 billion when its done. No wait, that the CITY. But at this rate, having a new, on-campus 25,000 seat facility is starting to make practical sense.
Hats off to those UH players who continue to fight in spite of all of the negativity. In particular those players who are “gutting it out” with injuries.

Have to say that is good to see productivity from Freshman WRs like Devan Stubblefield and Dylan Collie. Something to build for the future. What happened to Armon Barker?
Extending Chow would be cheaper. A two year extension would take Chow through the 2018 season. Season ticket sales should be down to 10,000 by that point. The existing UH lower campus parking structure handles that for the SSC. Then it’s just a matter of morphing Ching Field for 10,000 seats … say 12,500 cause you want to build in for room for growth. And Aloha Stadium will be fine … there are plenty of good high school games to draw crowds big enough to justify keeping it around.
The players are all beat up from a brutal out of conference schedule. For the team and the seniors, I hope they can put together a nice winning streak.
Too bad Ching field can’t hold 25K. Maybe it would be cheaper in the long run to construct a 25K stadium at Ching field. With PPV as another option to watch UH football, Ching field would be a nice venue to warch the games.
However, that would leave the stadium without their income from UH football. I don’t think that would sit well with some people in public office.

I’m pretty sure the NCAA has a rule of some sort that colleges must have a minimum seating capacity to be in DI. I think it was 35,000.
Some of you guys need to stop blaming the Ohio St. And Wisconsin games for all of the injuries. A lot of the guys that are injured now we’re fine after those games.
Now I don’t agree that it was smart ti have scheduled BOTH of them in one year, but it is in the past already. Focus on the present and the future.
Focus on the present by keeping Chow for the rest of the season. Focus on the future by extending Chow for a few more years.
Remember, he promises that he’ll get this thing turned around. They’ll forget this one and get back to work. That’s all he knows how to do, Robert.
Sorry ST, I respectfully disagree. You wrote that it is time for the Warriors to write their own story, but I think it has been written for them already.
The damage done to the morale and psyche of the players has them believing that they can’t win games. People will say and write that the team is upbeat, spirits are still not down, etc. Well, teams often don’t outwardly express their frustrations and dejectedNess out of respect for their teammates and coaches. But you better believe that the damage that Chow has done to this program has written the script for the rest of this team’s games under his leadership.
We all know the end of the story.
UMass is in the MAC (FBS conference like MWC). Their stadium seats 17,000. While I think UH should continue to play in a 50K+ seating capacity stadium, it seems to me that UH leadership is taking a path that will make a 17K one seem overly large.

With no more Pro Bowl and the local PPV, a UH stadium in the 40,000 to 45,000 range would suffice. School such as Houston and Utah seem to be doing well with such stadiums. The Utah AD has said that he prefers a sold out stadium as opposed to expanding to 60,000, as many are calling for.

The days of having 43,000 watching UH vs Abilene Christian (1980s) are long gone.
No one’s blaming those games as reasons for losses. It is what it is. Norm Chow is still the coach for UH. I get it we all want a winning program. Some people want to start a movement to fire Norm Chow.
This year will probably be a losing year again. The players, and their families and the coaches feel a lot worse than the average fan because they have an interest in the football program. And, because they are part of the program.
Fire Norm Chow movement? Nice idea. We need a leader for that movement. Any volunteers?
Frustration and feeling upset are directed at the wrong people. Norm Chow will be gone soon. The bigger issue is the process by which this state and the upper campus runs the University. If that can be fixed, UH football would be in a much better place.
That’s why I believe when the next election comes around, everyone should exercise their right to vote. Voting keeps people in public office and people in charge on their toes.
There are 5 more games. I hope the players get to experience winning in those 5 games. If it means having Coach Chow back for a 5th year because UH wants to honor his contract, then so be it. Good luck and be well Warrior players.

I didn’t say people are blaming those games for the losing, I said they are blaming them for the injuries. Our conference opponents have been just as responsible.
The point should be that there are no more excuses already. We have been losing to teams that we match up with physically and with talent. Nuff already.

Just for water cooler discussion. Possible UH coaching candidates could include: Brock Spack – Illinois State (remember him when he played LB for Wyoming). Bruce Barnum – Portland State. Beau Baldwin – Eastern Washington (who I like). Everett Whiters – James Madison (don’t know much about him, but he seems very talented). Hell, maybe even former UNLV and Utah assistant Mike Sanford at Indiana State (his DC is Brian Cabral). All are currently winning head coaches at the FCS (D-IAA) level. Just my 1.5 cents.
If you don’t think that chow has killed our program you need to lay off the drugs.
June Jones has been on the sidelines of most St. Louis games this year, guest of the Lee brothers. Rumors that he will coach UH next year may come true. He could use the same coaches on defense and add Cal Lee as Associate Head Coach. He just needs a better receivers coach and that could be Ron Lee. Norm Chow can be like Red Rocha. Make Chow in charge of parking at Manoa, he seems to enjoy arguing with people.
All the UH parking folks I have dealt with have been very professional.

Watching the replay in the 4th quarter after Wittek was picked off, Nevada scored oh so easily on the ground. Game over. Chow was arguing with the guys in stripes that he did not call the previous timeout prior to the TD. Seems his focus is on the guys in stripes. And then the guys in stripes call Kemp out-of-bounds on what should have been a TD pass from Wittek on the next Hawaii possession. Message – you yell at the guys in stripes, calls do not go your way, even after review. It was a TD, but ruled not. That’s the way its been.

I don’t think playing Ohio State and Wisconsin are cause for all the injuries. I think not having a bye is the greatest contributor. It’s a physical sport. Nagging injuries become major when there’s no rest time.

Emerging a bit early from my “no commenting within 24 hours of a loss rule”, but I woke up early today. Yes, I believe the team is physically beat up and ST is slowly leaking more info since it is obvious now. I know the coaches don’t want to use it as an excuse and for secrecy against future opponents.
I remember a few years back ST’s blog entry talked about players (trying to get a medical exemption from the NCAA) asking him why ST didn’t write about their injuries. If it did, his media report could serve as documentation of the injury and non-participation.
ST’s response was like: “Hey, every time I asked about your injury, you said you were just fine”.
Coach and player may have to say something if they are carried off the field and don’t return…
Yeah, no one is going to “cry to a reporter” about his injuries if he hopes to get on the field again.
But ST is at the practices everyday, has eyes, and knows the players by name and number. I don’t have the starting lineup from the first Colorado game vs. the last Reno game, but it might be an interesting comparison.
I hate losing and injuries and bad calls are not the only reason– but the players are stepping up and trying hard. I wonder how much gas is left in the tank… is it half empty or half full?
Hawaii will lose money either way but it has to take a step in the right direction
Scenario 1:Hawaii Fires Chow and buys out his contract,hires a coach who people will get excited about increasing season ticket sales and walk up ticket sales
Scenario 2:Hawaii keeps Chow for final year of contract and season ticket sales decrease to 12k and lose walk up ticket sales..and still has to find a new coach
Are you sure about having your entire foot down? I have been watching football for over 30 years and have heard and seen many times where the receivers drag their toes inbound and it would be ruled a catch. In fact….teams. practice catching the ball and dragging their toes a lot.
IMHO, any referee, regardless of sport, needs to look into a mirror and ask himself/herself, “am I truly unbiased and will will call the game correctly without creating a negative image of a coach or player because he/she challenged me?”

Noteworthy is the accuracy of A View from Afar, who missed by 5 points yesterday. But he missed SDSU by only 4 points and the UC Davis game by only 4 points also.
The entire foot does not need to touch. It can be any part of the body as long as the receiver has possession has the ball. As for Kemp’s catch, it looked like his toe got in, even dragging so as to knock the rubber pellets of field turf in the air. Puzzling call.
Dolphins and USC fired their coaches two weeks ago. Their players are excited, motivated and playing great football now. If UH fired Chow after San Diego St we could’ve been a new team and kicked New Mexico and Nevada okole’s and be 4 and 4. Chow seems lost on the sidelines. We need a change or we may end up 4 and 9 again.
Wow! Silence is golden. I think Jeezy33 got fed up with everything and is at a loss of words. I too have been relatively quiet. The frustration, the anger, the laughing, the inevitable losing of games, how we lose, the bad decisions that are made, etc. leaves us fans to turn to other things. There will be more and more people less in the stands this weekend. My friends that all come to my house to see PPV all said thanks for the invite, but they don’t want to see our team play. One friend said,” I would rather play junk golf than watch a junk team!!!!” Another one said, no thanks “I know what the score will be at the end.”

And the quiet before the storm. There has been nary a word from our Athletic Directer, Dave Matlin. Ben Jay would have said something long ago had he been the AD still. What is Matlin doing? This is the lifeblood of the athletic program, football. I think Reardon hit it on the head. Wittek is not the answer (I said this 2 years ago), and so wasn’t Taylor Graham. Woolsey at least played better and is more mobile. 3 picks and a fumble ain’t going to cut it. Why not try Reilly, what does Chow have to lose at this point. Give him a few series to see what he can do.
We need a spark, unless the spark already went out. In that case, fire Chow now!
My point is these last 2 games should have been wins. Chow just doesn’t know how to win games and makes bad decisions. And that is very disturbing to me, and probably a lot of other people. Just my opinion.

I know college only need one foot/toe and pro need both feet/toes but never heard of having to have an entire foot down to be a catch. I have even seen receivers falling out of bound drag their heels on the grass get ruled a catch.

this is a poor argument by chow unless the refs he was verbally assaulting for the entire game were the SAME refs who called last week’s game against new mexico. for the most part, how a completely different ref crew called a single play last week isn’t that relevant to an entirely different crew who probably wasnt’ watching how that game was officiated anyway, unless the call was so terrible that the zebras had a meeting about it.
also, referees are people too. and anyone who has ever played sports involving refs knows that screaming and berating referees doesn’t cause the refs to reverse calls. Also, as people, refs tend to get fed up and extremely annoyed with players and coaches who scream and yell at them and will be less inclined to give you/your team leeway during calls.
It needs to be said. I respect George O’Leary because he just resigned from his post at Central Florida. UCF at 0-8 is having a terrible season by their past records. Just a couple of years ago, they won a New Year’s Day Bowl game and have been conference champions a number of times. UCF can now go ahead to look to the future and try to get a new coach in place quickly so that recruiting won’t be impacted too much. For O’Leary, he won’t be hurting for money and will surface someplace else.
If reardon is the leader then I want to hear that he has gone to matlin and chow and told them to their faces that chow should go.
The AD… has to ask first before he can fire ne one…for he knows…like ne one else… lots of cash involved…Where will he get the money from? Is he the one to sign that check ?? Will Koa Aneunue sign check…???
As for the ‘zebras’…on the big island at the end of season they get together n always vote for the coach they like the best…n is usually published in print…so if you haggle a ‘zebra’ not to expect ur name to be at the top of the list…that is reality n human nature…you always favor however slight in favor of the people you like or get along with…it is done in all walks of life…in business as well…you get hired or fired mostly not on merit…but by who you know….Is it right ??

The UH AD position is just a title. There is no real power at UH with the AD.
This issue was definitely brought to the public light during Ben Jay’s tenure. People who have followed UH Athletics closely over the years already knew this but it’s become public recently. This problem is probably why UH can’t attract a quality AD. Even if UH hires a good guy, there’s no power to make significant decisions or enact changes that need to be made.
I think UH is a red flag to good potential applicants and if memory serves me correct, I think the pool of AD applicants were extremely weak following Frasier and Donovan’s exits. I remember UH needed to hire head hunters just to talk Ben Jay into applying.
When I watch the replay and see that UH is only down by 3 points with 4 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, and UH has the ball, I can’t help but think how much of a difference Coach Chow’s penalty and the resulting 3 points for Nevada meant in the games outcome. Being tied at that point would have allowed for a field position game to be played. That’s not to say that a fumble couldn’t have occurred during conservative play instead of the interception. All things considered, I think I would be fair to say that Chow’s misbehavior had at least as much to do with the loss this week as our outstanding kicker’s unfortunate field goal miss last week. I wonder if Coach Chow will step up and accept responsibility for his sideline behavior in interviews.
The description of the injuries which ails the Warriors applies to every team in the nation, even the teams who beat us.
The popular candidate for AD was Keith Amemiya. I think he would have made a very good AD. I feel David Matlin will do a good job. Let’s wait and see how he manages this fiasco, while considering the obstacle(s) he faces with the politics of the Manoa campus.
First of all I have never seen a coach smile when his team gets flagged and I’ve never seem a coach not argue a bad call against his team. Even in pop warner coaches show some anger so give me a break. Yet people complain when Coach Chow has a smile on his face after a loss. Make up your mind.
Ohio State beat Rutgers on the road 49-7 so Rutgers is worst then us. Texas Tech with their run & shoot got shot by Oklahoma 63 to 27. San Diego State put a whopping on Utah State who whooped Boise the week before so is SDSU an underrated team that we lost to. Thought we’re having problems Fresno lost to Air force by 28 and I thought they had a up and coming program & a great coach and good players. And Colorado beat Oregon State, holy cow!
#70 … I’m not quite sure what your point is. Are you trying to quantify how good UH actually is based on how other teams that UH lost to have done? Look more closely at the scenarios that you listed. They really say nothing about the state of UH football.

You can’t COMPARE APPLES TO APPLES…cuz have a very many varieties…the man ur facing.. maybe has no injuries… n u have…or he may be injured n u are not…or could be a back-up…that can n will make a difference in the long run…60 minutes is a long time…
Our biggest problem seems to be… halftime…what does the coach say to them…to motivate them that have plagued ur second half efforts so bad…seems like our offense is just shut down completely second half…is it just technical x n o’s…or we need a ‘positive motivational’ speaker to fire them up…

Air Force giving 7.5 points according to an offshore. A bit surprising since Fresno was getting 17 points this past weekend against the Falcons. Thought Warriors would be getting near 14 points next weekend.

If he is successful in turning the program around the bug schools will come calling again that’s where Hawaii can make some money back by adding a buyout clause of 2-3 million should Sark leave for another job before his original contract expires.
The personnel is there already for the type of offense he would run along with his ability to recruit I think he would uncover some hidden gems in So Cal and maybe even steal a few recruits.
He is a young energetic coach who I’m sure would energize the program,speed of the leader as they call it,players want a coach they can relate to on some level I feel Chow has lost his connection to the team and no matter what they say in the media players will never be honest about their feelings…

Part of being a good leader is to be able to motivate and inspire your team to do the best they can. I don’t see this at all in the team. A fresh approach is needed, I was never a fan of throwing names in the hat, but Miano would be an instant replacement and the transition should be alot easier. Gotta do something to motivate the team, the school, and the fans

For years I could count on UH football to take my mind off how awful my IU Hoosiers are. I go back to David Toloumu days when, win or lose, opponents felt physically spent after a UH game. Problem now is losing for so long makes it harder to recruit and turn things around. Like a death spiral.

At the time when a replacement for Coach McMackin was in full swing, I liked the idea of Brian Norwood, the offensive coordinator for Baylor, as a candidate, until I realized that he spent seven seasons as a Penn State assistant.

It’s the fourth year I can bring up the blank stares, or laughter(it varied from relative to relative) that met my enthusiasm for Ivin Jasper as Hawaii’s next head coach.
Navy really impresses me.
I am still optimistic though that Hawaii can win out, and reach the required seven wins for bowl eligibility.

Baldwin might look at Craig Bohl’s struggles at Wyoming, and wonder if Hawaii is analogous to coaching the Cowboys.

Bohl has got to be missing Fargo.
The problems that face athletics at UH are quite larger than replacing a coach. They have a falling enrollment, crumbling buildings, a huge facilities maintenance issue, a student body faced with increasing tuition, a Legislature somewhat tired of bailing out an entity that wanted to be autonomous.
So when folks talk about changing a coach, questioning the intentions of the athletic director, it may be wise to take a giant step back to see where athletics fits into the much larger picture that faces this institution.
Jason. Thanks for posting the termination without cause clause in Chow’s contract. It is still unclear to me when you can relieve him of his duties as head coach. The contract states the University can terminate the contract without cause with 90 days written notice. How should one interpret this?
If Matlin sends Chow a letter of termination without cause tomorrow can he also state he is relieving Chow of all head coaching duties immediately? Does Chow have a case for full compensation for 2016 if he is relieved of his duties of head coach upon receipt of the letter? That 90 days with written notice part of the contract is open to different interpretation as to how long after receipt of the letter Chow can remain on the job.
In RENO the Nevada coach’s tv program tonight dissected Saturdays win over UH. Lots of smiles and chest pumping over coming from being down 17 and pulling out the victory…………… “We got stronger as the game progressed.” Our guys showed heart, was the overriding theme. “We decided to go for the onside kick when coach Chow was awarded the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, figuring even if we didn’t recover the ball we wouldn’t be jeopardizing field position.”
Well I guess we have to say that they deserved their reward……..We blew it!
I also would like to add that that was the most well executed onside kick that I have every witnessed. But I have one question: As the kicker was leading the ball running interference protecting it while it was dribbling on it’s 10 yard journey to become a valid kick and then covering it, why didn’t a front-line UH player BLOW HIM UP?

I don’t believe Matlin is hiding his head in the ground ignoring the real probability that the fans won’t support a football coach who hasn’t had a winning season in four straight seasons. When he first took the job the three immediate problems facing him were the basketball fiasco with Gib’s contract and the NCCA’s investigation, funding the cost of attendance subsidies and stemming falling football revenues. Now he has what to do about the Chow situation.
He doesn’t have Power 5 tv money to help him make decisions.
Our athletic dept. needs all the help they can get. I just purchased two mens/women basketball season ticket packages as my way to help the bottomline. I’ll renew my football tickets as long as I am physically able to attend the games.
To say attending games under Chow has been frustrating is an understatement. Demoralizing of the fan base is more accurate. But when I look at the roster of returning players, the redshirts and current commits I see the cupboard as fuller than 4 years ago. Add a few more big bodies and we’ll have enough ingredients a good coach can cook up a winning team with.
If there is a coaching change, and the writing seems to be on the wall, my dream is for the UH AD to make the decision, like many ADs do. If there is a committee, (highly likely with everyone wanting to interfere) the members should be football guys like Tomey, Wagner, Blane Gaison (former UH & NFL player, respected coach and athletic administrator), Kent Untermann (former UH player and successful businessman). I see no sense in having a hiring committee for a division I head coach who are made up of people who run hospitals, insurance companies, hotels, utility companies, and the like.
USA Today says Coach Chow makes $550K for his base salary and about $88K from other pay, for a total of about $638K. Utah State’s coach has a total pay of about $753K. It could be argued that UH would get a lot of value for the $185K difference. Re #97: Good points on Craig Bohl at Wyoming. He’s having a hard time with the Pokes after coming over from a FCS championship program. I think that the jury is still out on Bohl, though. He coached a number of years (and played) at Nebraska. You just never know how a new coach will pan out. I just would feel better hiring a successful head coach at the college level who won’t be surprised as the duties involved in being the HC.
Beau Baldwin was mentioned as a candidate at Oregon State last year, along with Matt Wells at USU. I think that Jim Tressler made the transition from Youngstown State (I-AA champs) to Ohio State quite smoothly, but that was at talent rich Ohio State. BTW, read that former BYU coach Gary Crowton just resigned from Southern Utah as their OC, and has shown up in Corvallis, Oregon as a volunteer offensive coach for Gary Andersen at Oregon State. Sounds desperate.
How do you recruit a player to go to Wyoming?
There’s absolutely nothing up in Laramie. Got to be a hardy type of player/person to spend 4-5 years up there. They’ve got good facilities, and are upgrading what they do have due to State support and boosters.

Khon2 said the fanatics are calling for a coaching change. Really? Fanatics? If we ever do have a coaching change, I hope that the players who decide to stay on remain committed to this program. The opportunity to play for a D1 program is a privilege and we as fans are also privileged to have players like Lakalaka and Tulimasealii, just to name a few.

You left out the crucial part where O’Leary was the interim AD and coaching the football team…
At this point the football program is at rock bottom– hopefully it won’t drop further. Chow’s tenure has seen large defection from season ticket holders, those who attend games, and those who just follow the team, watch games, and care about the program. There is now apathy, with a lot of people who left the program 2 or 3 years into Chow’s tenure moving on and with no interest in the program anymore. It is going to take a lot to not only terminate Chow, but to raise the interest of fans and build the program back to what it was when Chow took over and even better.
I have said this before here goes. UH with its ten, yes ten campuses has a budget somewhere around a 1.5 billion dollar spend. To cite concerns regarding buildings facilities and money concern is ridiculous. The AD is nothing but a political football being tossed around by an administration and legislature as to who job is it anyway. Some at very high levels have said directly to me that the FB program is more like a pro team than a college team. In other words someone else outside of the University owns it-those are the words that were spoken. Until the University takes ownership total responsibility and understands this could be a great asset, then we will continue to struggle. Someone with common sense and a vision is needed. Regarding any future coaches it is my option that someone with head coaching experience and a resume of more than one stop is the minimum requirement. Like I said coaching is important but so to is recruiting money raising and community oriented-redundant again but PJ FLeck the youngest coach in football is a leading example-Go Warriors!!!!
Hawaii is probably in better shape than where Southern Mississippi was during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
3-9 was considered a breakout season by comparison in 2014.
This year, they’re 5-3.
Hawaii is also probably in better shape than Kansas, too.

The Falcons are just as banged up/injured as the Warriors at least 6 regulars some lost for the season including the starting QB which makes 7. I just can’t figure out the Warriors’ defense. They slowed San Diego’s rushing; kept the Warriors in the game. They slowed New Mexico’s option, but could not defend the pass. They defended the pass against Nevada, but failed to stop the run. So what’s going on? Now Air Force, another option team. I think it’s going to come down to who wants to win more. Which team is focused and executes….without penalties. And no turnovers.
Hmmm, Dino Babers is out. He is on the way to a possible double digit win season (currently 6-2) and fully expect him to be coaching in the Big 12 or SEC next season. Duane Akina is also riding high, with Stanford sneaking up for another Rose Bowl appearance at 6-1. Brian Norwood is the DC at Tulsa, and having a fairly mediocre season….
