Video gamer

The UH grass practice field, like a casino, is equipped with wide-eyed cameras.

The videos show who is working hard, who is missing assignments, who is hanging out too long by the Gatorade container.

Zeno Choi is supposed to be just another freshman walk-on wearing a scout jersey. But he stood out in videos, partially because he is 6 feet 3 and 270 pounds, mostly because he has agile feet that never stop moving.

Choi was added to last week’s travel roster because the Warriors had a last-minute opening for a pre-paid airplane eat. He is on this week’s travel roster because he can play three positions on the defensive line — and play them well.

Sometimes the best path is straight to video.

  10. Duster October 21, 2015 11:44 am

Great for Zeno. Wasn’t there a DL during Levi Stanley’s time (early 1970’s) named Paul Lee? I seem to remember radio broadcasts of UH football games as a kid where Lee made a stop and was referred to as the Great Wall of China even though he was Korean? I think it was Chuck Leahey doing to play-by-play. Can’t pin down the year, but I specifically remember listening the the game where Reinhold Stuprich kicked 5 FGs to beat favored BYU something like 15-13.

Chow’s response that the positioning of the ball in the middle of the field was not important on the 22 yd notmissed field goal is not surprising. What else is he going to say, they chose not to do it; not smart to go public on something so basic you deemed as meaningless. There is no guaranty that Sanchez would have made it from the middle. However, the middle look give the widest target and more margin for error. Left hash kick much easier than the right for a right footer on shorter attempts.

Hey the NFL does it all he time. Top college programs have a special teams coach and they do it all the time. Even done in high school to run to the middle of the field to set up field goal attempts. But hey Chow must know something, his record at UH in 3+ years speaks for itself.

K, last time I bring this up, but since he was asked about this on Call the Coach and his answer IMO was less than genuine, had to comment.

  15. Willie October 21, 2015 12:19 pm

#8 Duster, yup Paul Lee was a Roosevelt HS grad if my memory is correct. Soft spoken guy that did his speaking on the field. He hung out a lot with Levi in the big whirlpool in the training room. Paul, Levi and Reinhold you mentioned all very nice guys. You can talk to them and they willingly converse with you. Also still remember those 5 field goals by Reinhold, he is in my top 3 kickers of all time at #2. Tried to get him to play soccer with us after the football season was pau.

  32. islandman October 21, 2015 3:16 pm

    12. Willie … At the end of the 1st half in the Colorado game, on third and goal, Max fell down on purpose, i think, in the middle of the field, at the Colorado 10 yd line. Then Rigo kicked a 27 yard FG to make it 18-14 for UH to end the half. After the game, i think many criticized UH for calling that 3rd down play.

  33. Willie October 21, 2015 3:27 pm

#30islandman, well guess they do have this strategy about field position on a field goal attempt? Critical point here in the Colorado game is that this occurred in the first half. Totally different scenario in the New Mexico game at the wee end of a closely contested game. I have not coached any football ever, but the last time I looked there is not a 9-point play of any kind in any football league in this world.

My thought, despite my inexperience and no qualifications to be a football coach is that you give your kicker the best chance at success. If you go up by 9, New Mexico has a difficult time because they have to score twice and the Warriors have an opportunity to run out the clock barring an onside kick shud NM score in some fashion.. That’s it for my strategical thought.

  34. Da Punchbowl Kid October 21, 2015 3:40 pm

    Good job Zeno!

    Go Warriors!!!

  35. orioles4eva October 21, 2015 4:36 pm

I remember Paul Lee running up the stairs that connected the quarry with the upper campus, all the time rain or shine, he was so determined and dedicated. He worked so hard to make himself into a solid player.

  36. touchthestick? October 21, 2015 5:22 pm

    Further on #12 and #31

(including #12’s “last time I bring this up”):

Last Sunday, bonus coverage after Bengals game of Browns vs. Broncos.

Overtime, Broncos’ second possession, Broncos can win on a field goal, Broncos drive to somewhere near 30 yard line, 3rd and 7, Broncos huddling.

Then, per the game announcers, Kubiak “RAN onto the FIELD” and yelled
    instructions to Peyton Manning.

Per game announcers, the instructions “probably” were to run the ball to the center of the field.

Centering the ball for a decisive FG is so basic that Coach Chow loses all credibility when he simply denies it’s importance instead of admitting its importance and explaining a larger goal he aspired to.

(Of course, in the Broncos win over the Browns, Peyton Manning eschewed the 3rd down run and play actioned a pass to the sideline to pick up the first down.

But that’s Peyton Manning, plus the hash marks are way closer to the center of the field in the pros so the Broncos pro field goal kicker still had a big goal post target at 30 yards out if Peyton Manning had not completed his 3rd down pass, plus it wasn’t important to run the clock with a run.)

Plus plus plus adds up to a lot of zeroes for Coach Chow.

  37. Duster October 21, 2015 5:52 pm

Willie – thank you for verifying that I was not imagining that there was a UH DL of Korean descent back then. Loved that Sony transistor radio. Listened to Les Keiter broadcast Islander baseball games too.

most beautiful site from my office window — a rainbow stretching from Manoa Valley to Nuuanu Valley and beyond

going home from the airport — first, a single rainbow from H3 tunnel toward Kahaluu followed by a smaller rainbow from the tunnels to the first mountain ridge — say, 200′ long

is this a “sign” of good things to come?

  40. A-House October 21, 2015 6:51 pm

will there be another year when another Jeris White and Hal Stringert join the Rainbows? or, a Levi Stanley and Paul Lee?

I certainly hope so that it was not a “once-in-a-life time” happening — we were privileged to see that

  41. A-House October 21, 2015 6:58 pm

I do hope Matlin or the new HC decide to schedule the middle to lower tier of the Power5 conference teams or spread out the top tier ones to once a year on a “home and home” basis”.

UH has not played a team from the ACC or Big East ( do they still exist? ) — maybe, North Carolina or NC State; or Maryland or Miami.

these schools bring out the fans to Aloha Stadium.

  42. nomu October 21, 2015 7:51 pm

Hope these cameras can help us figure out why we always seem to have these untimely penalties. Have to give credit to this team for not pointing fingers, because some of these penalties might have changed the outcome of some games. Not referring to things like the defense jumping offsides or stuff like that. Anyway, bottom line is, correct the problems now and it’s no longer a problem, hopefully. Still want to be optimistic and look forward to better things next year.

  43. HawaiiMongoose October 21, 2015 8:18 pm

Chow’s excuse for not positioning the ball in the middle of the field for the field goal attempt is laughable. At that point in the game and in those circumstances, New Mexico’s only realistic hope of winning the game is UH shanking the kick. So you play the odds and set your kicker up for the easiest possible attempt, so as to give your team the very best chance to win. That’s not football coaching 101, it’s football coaching 001.

  44. Willie October 21, 2015 8:21 pm

Duster, remember the Columbia Inn sign with the $1,000 puka at Honolulu Stadium. Key names from the baseball past I still remember watching play; Bobby Knoop, Carlos Berneir and Bo Belinsky of the Islanders. Actually ran into Bo when I was working in Pearl City, he was working at a car dealership out there. He was quite smitten and somewhat amazed that I recognized and remembered him.

  45. H-Man October 21, 2015 8:31 pm

  48. oneseason October 21, 2015 8:38 pm

I haven’t been able to listen to all of Coach Chow’s post-loss interviews, but I don’t recall him saying anything he did involving a UH game was ever a mistake. Clock management, coaching staff selection, use of players, coaching of players, and play calling never seem to contribute to his losses, by his accounts that I have heard anyway. He seems to always fault execution, and provides faint praise to others that he identifies as having failed to achieve perfection. After one game where Sean Schroeder played with great heart but the team lost, I remember Coach Chow responding something like “He played okay, … I guess”.

For the poster that mentioned Paul Lee. We were the same class teamates and friends. Strongest guy on the team with a bench over 400-he had zero fat on his body and was solid to say the least. He was an excellent student and a all round good guy. To the person that saw Paul running stairs at the quarry-Paul hated running so you must have gotten him on an off day! He was a weight room addict-I know because I spent a lot of time running on those stairs and have a GPA to prove it! Paul was an absolutely great guy and great teammate-to the person who could not pass up the opportunity to slight the walk-on freshman DL. You probably don’t know based on experience a young guy gets bigger stronger and more technique sound once they leave high school. I am sure ZC is going to make a contribution even though he is young and raw. I am anxiously waiting for him to mix it up on Sat. I have a nick name ready and waiting-like I said before Zeno bring the wood on Sat!

  57. Tempmanoa October 22, 2015 3:27 am

The internet boards contain some strong reasons why Chow will not be fired until the end of his contract after next year. The UH administration does not want yet another buyout and will not provide funds to the athletic department for this purpose. The administration is not concerned about a decline in revenues next year or the remainder of this year because they will simply press the athletic department to shrink expenditures to match revenue and generally shrink the athletic program. The UH will simply suggest the next legislature provide more money if the legistlature believes more money should go to the athletic department.
