Wednesday: BeachBows fundraiser

Good morning. Team not practicing Wednesday. They had weights this morning.
Do not have any injury updates.

Belated happy birthday to Savanah Kahakai. It was Tuesday. There were cupcakes.

Sunday is the 3rd Portuguese horseshoes fundraiser for the BeachBows. on campus, grassy area between Gym 1 and SSC.

People had asked about donating to Tai’s family. my suggestion is to contact the booster club.

Someone had suggested hostels for housing. I think her church is involved with that but good suggestion.

I understand the continued discussion about the end-of-the-season schedule, I guess, but it is what it is and it’s not going to change.

But it’s not like it’s new, particularly when you consider the years where they had to finish the season on the road with the WAC tournament.
couple of examples:
97: senior night Nov. 8. last three matches on the road before three at tournament in Las Vegas then at LMU for NCAA first round
01: senior night Nov. 9. WAC tournament at San jose, 2 matches at UOP tournament then NCAA tournament on the road.
02: senior night Nov. 10. last two matches on the road, then the WAC tournament in Reno followed by 2 matches, one at Utah, the other BYU, before the NCAA tournament
09: senior night Nov. 8, last three matches on the road, then WAC tournament in Las Vegas, then NCAA matches through final four on road.

I realize the sport has changed and opponents have gotten better but these extended road trips also nothing new. Agree it is not ideal this season.

Regarding VB playing the same day as football…it happened twice last year if my recollection is correct. An 8:30pm game after the 1st football game (vs Washington) and a noon VB match prior to the 2nd one.

Both of those matches were sparsely attended. I went to both VB & FB those days but it was a bit of a struggle.

I appreciate it that the Athletic Department tries not to schedule too many events on the same day…especially football since it ties up so many resources.

    -Aloha!

Boosters or well intended UH supporters should read up on compliance or call Amanda Patersen, Chief Compliance Officer UH, before sending in money to TMO, there are stringent rules by the NCAA on gifting to athletes. No extra benefits to athletes regardless of their financial needs.

UH Wahine volleyball is at a point now that its big time and should always be at a time where fans can attend. Some poster mentioned that some PAC 12 schools schedule their games on Wednesdays and nothing wrong with UH playing on Wednesdays. Well, at those schools, volleyball is not big like here. They draw very little compare to UH so they don’t have to look at the bottom line. Those schools get plenty of football money to keep the program going.

If UH schedule game at Wednesday, it will cut the attendance in half and all that take about UH being “self sufficient” and being a money maker will go down the drain.

Why do you think there are no NFL football on Wednesdays or even major college football game played on Wednesday? Wednesday(and Tuesdays) are just lousy days to schedule sporting events.

Dave Shoji did the best he can to maximize all the money coming into his program. It is a little harsh on the girls to finish the last month on the road but if the AD is going to put UH behind football and men’s basketball, then Dave had no choice but to do what he did.

Even though I knew about the schedule for a while now, it’s just sinking in that UH will most likely not host the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament so this schedule stings more now.

Being on the road for the last month of the season, just does not sound like a recipe for a successful run to the elite 8 or final four with this team that is already showing signs of injuries and wearing out. But I hope they somehow persevere.

I had posted the wahine complete their regular season schedule on the road playing 6 in 15. That pales to their last four where they go 4 in 6 @ FOUR different venues. Astounding. It is fortunate that we play conference teams. Perhaps, not so fortuitous? Hopefully, Coach will sub freely.
Still, the wear and tear and risk of injury is scary. Especially at the end of the season with so many players on the heal. While I agree, Shoji is confronted with front office budgetary pressures, yet, there has to be a line drawn between reasonable and too risky. The game has changed. VB players jump higher, train in the weight room in-season and have taller players who are injure prone at the joints. REST is not an option.
Further, the wahine VB team has been a gold note in UHAD revenues.
The way UH has been paying out chunks of money for their STUPID mistakes since JJ left is astounding. Im talking millions of USDs. Why all the pressure on Shoji, if that is the claim?
Unless the assertion is shibai and promulgated by his testy blog-o-sphere body blockers to hide his oversight in scheduling. IDK.
In the mid west, America’s heartland, there comes a time tested saying, “you feed the cow that gives you milk”. Coach Dave has patiently crafted Wahine VB to be one of only three programs @ UH that operates in the black–that merits respect and another round trip!

If there was an online component of the BeachBow Fund raiser, I think that wahine fans on mainland would gladly jump in and support the ladies. There are literally thousands of us ex-islanders/ex-UH alum/ex-player ohana/unabashed fans that would gladly support financially. Make it fun so we can participate and we can be another additional funding source.

    6. great idea, Does the Beach volleyball team have a booster club? Maybe they should set up a gofundme account, If it’s allowed by the NCAA so people all over the world can donate to them.

    7. Booster clubs are shown on this webpage, as you scroll down the page. Sand VB is one of them.

There is also Coaches Choice, but it looks like Jeff Hall’s request has been funded.

    2. i suggested contacting the booster club to see about donating because people had asked if they could. the booster club is well aware of compliance and funds are channeled through the UH Foundation.
BTW Mitchem out after surgery today.

Understood that this season’s schedule is what it is. For future seasons, though, I would encourage the planners to look at the occasional midweek game as a possibility. I think the turnout would be pretty good, and some fans might find one or two midweek games per season to be preferable, especially if it means a later senior night and/or a way to stagger the long road trips a bit so the student-athletes can attend a few more day of classes.

For fans, it would be one less day of sitting in rush-hour traffic, and a chance to do an errand or two (or catch easy early dinner). I liked the midweek games of the “old” Rainbow Classic, and mid-November would seem to be less crazy a time for this than the holidays. It seems like the biggest drawbacks to fans would be those with young kids, and maybe parking in the structure unless it empties out by ~5:30 mid-semester?

If I’m understanding correctly, a Wednesday or Thursday game would give enough time for Teraflex placement and then removal (say on Friday morning/afternoon before basketball).
