Mitchem may be out for 6 weeks, Top 25 scores

From UH
University of Hawai‘i junior middle hitter Annie Mitchem suffered a fracture dislocation of her little finger on her right hand in the Rainbow Wahine’s most recent match against UC Irvine on Oct. 17. Mitchem had surgery on Wednesday and her projected recovery should last approximately six weeks.

“This is an unfortunate injury for Annie and the team,” head coach Dave Shoji said in a release. “She was playing well and improving daily. We hope she can rejoin the team soon.”

Mitchem had appeared in 18 matches this season with three starts—two at middle hitter and one at opposite. She recorded 51 kills and 33.0 total blocks averaging 1.38 kills and 0.89 blocks per set. Against the Anteaters she recorded a career-high seven kills, two service aces, and 13 digs along with three blocks for a career-high 10.5 points.

Real unfortunate. She really showed graceful movement on the court, i thought. They could have used Megan Huff, with all the injuries.

  2. kimo browner October 21, 2015 4:47 pm

devasting news for the wahine program.

  3. uhfan October 21, 2015 4:51 pm

Unfortunate news. Annie was really bringing it on. Guess this means Castillo will have to train middle too?

  4. greenthumb October 21, 2015 4:56 pm

Sad news for Annie and the team. Hope the surgery and rehab are successful. Don’t know what to say about her playing as gutsy and energetically as she did with a dislocated finger. Can only imagine that hurts worse than a dislocated toe, and those are pretty miserable.

  5. AlexM October 21, 2015 5:02 pm

Best wishes for Annie. Amazed that she could play through the pain for the rest of that match. UH is really injury plagued this year. Too bad Huff still not with the team.

All of a sudden, going undefeated in conference gets that much harder.

  6. islandman October 21, 2015 5:03 pm

    3. Right now we need coverage on the right and the left sides, which Annie could play, besides the middle.

  7. oldtimer808 October 21, 2015 5:16 pm

Healing energy to all our Rainbow Wahines as we continue to move forward.

  8. AlexM October 21, 2015 5:17 pm

We still don’t know about Greeley’s situation. I guess Kendra could also be used on the outside in an emergency. Any consideration on Burns not redshirting?

  9. kahuna October 21, 2015 5:18 pm

I guess if Natasha is cleared this year, you kind of have to play her. There is currently NO backup MB. Yeah…Casey can take reps at MB but then you taking away her from the outside and then the outside will have no depth.

Other option is to have Kendra take reps at OPP and leave Casey and McKenna on the left with Burns a backup in the middle(if cleared). That way you have a least one backup at every position.

  10. H-Man October 21, 2015 5:24 pm

What bad luck. Speedy recovery for Annie.

  11. mo-jo October 21, 2015 5:29 pm

So many injuries this year. But looking at Arizona, Penn State, Stanford, …. we’re not alone.
    Get well Annie!

  12. Ki October 21, 2015 5:45 pm

Cindy… do you think Dave Will activate Natasha Burns to backup the middle position? Do you think Dave will train Kendra at Opposite to back up Nikki Taylor (since she’s played that position before)? How’s Greeley doing?

  13. Cindy Luis October 21, 2015 5:54 pm

    12. Burns is still a week or two from being cleared. I kind of doubt it. She is not in playing shape IMHO, hasn’t practiced she the injury.
And doubt that they’ll move Koelsch, they need her at setter.
Greeley’s cleared to practice. They are going light on Thursday and taking Friday off.

prayers for Annie. hoping for a speedy recovery.

Cindy, do you think that if Annie had notified the coaches about hurting her hand at the beginning that the extent of her injury wouldn’t be as bad as it is now?

as for Natasha, i wouldn’t put her in even when she is cleared. i would rather have her redshirt, because attempting to put her in now, i feel it would rob her of her freshman year, and i honestly feel she should be able to play more than two games at the SSC. that’s just my opinion.

the injuries this season is just so overwhelming, but at least Annie’s injury isn’t season ending. hope she recovers quickly.

  16. warriorfan October 21, 2015 6:53 pm

Oh well at least none of the injuries have been real serious. Hope Annie is ready to go by the NCAA tournament.

Just watched Stanford beat UW, UW can’t defend or block the backrow attacks from the right side, if Nikki ( and the setters )are on she will have a field day against them.

  17. kimo browner October 21, 2015 7:02 pm

Mitchem was our ace in the hole moving towards the playoffs…I thought she was potentially our best athlete and most versatile player next to Nikki that was going to explode in the playoffs…Annie showed quiet courage after incurring her injury…folks gotta luv her.
Time to prep the eager frosh– Casey Castillo. She is the lone survivor and a gamer. I believe she will jump out of her shoes if given the opportunity. Look, if she rises to the challenge it stops the bleeding. We will need to put up a big block in the playoffs to stay in contention. She has dominating size and a lanky stature perfect for blocking.
The block comes first. The rest will follow. Get her ready to play!

  18. Ki October 21, 2015 7:06 pm

Out for 6 weeks? That means she’s out for the season. Burns fractured her finger in August. It’s almost November and she’s still not cleared to practice. Realistically, do we think Annie will be back in 6 weeks when it’s taking Burns 2 months with the sane injury? Can Megan come back?

  19. jmy October 21, 2015 7:08 pm

This Friday Kansas plays at Texas…we’ll see which team is for real…

  20. warriorfan October 21, 2015 7:14 pm

re: 18, if you count this week, she could be cleared by the start of December when the NCAA tourney is just getting underway , first round matches are slated for Dec 3rd-5th.

  21. warriorfan October 21, 2015 7:16 pm

    19. Kansas was beat in the first round last year at home by Arkansas little rock. I am pretty sure they are a pretender yet again.

  22. kimo browner October 21, 2015 7:19 pm

#11 Stanford upset #4 WASH @ Maples Pavillon, 3-2. Ohio St upset by #31 MSU at East Lansing. #2 TEX hosts #7 Kansas on FRI @ Austin. Ohio State travels to
#23 MICH on SAT. #10 UCLA @ the animal house in Eugene on FRI.
Idle HAW may be moving if the long horns knock out the lady jayhawks. They will definitely move if Ohio State drops another on the road in Ann Arbor and NEB drops MINN at home on FRI.

  23. AlexM October 21, 2015 7:23 pm

On the positive side, the team has 2 weeks to prepare for their next matches. I’m most worried about Greeley’s shoulder holding up for the rest of the year. Magill and Maglio need to stay healthy.

  24. kimo browner October 21, 2015 7:36 pm

Forget Annie. If she miraculously heals–there is still a question of rehab, etc.
Burns too, she is an unknown quantity and we have two middles.
Castillo is ready, alive and robust, and ready to rock & roll. Casey is $$.
If one of our middles go down, it is MASH time…and Shoji will earn his wages.
From a deep bench we are down to one in-the-chamber. Use it or lose it.

  25. greenthumb October 21, 2015 7:46 pm

18, with the disclaimer I’m not a medical professional … Natasha Burns’s injury was a broken bone(s?) in her hand rather than a finger, so hopefully the healing and rehab curve is swifter for a digit, even though this was surgery rather than splinting.

  26. nomu October 21, 2015 8:56 pm

While Hawaii may not host this year, I like our chances this year given the current RPI rankings. It may actually be a blessing in disguise.

  27. Cindy Luis October 21, 2015 9:08 pm

    15. Believe I said Saturday after it happened that she did not tell anyone until after the match. That’s what a coach reconfirmed today.

my timeline has Mitchem possibly ready by the week the NCAA tournament starts.

Yes, Burns’ injury was more hand than finger.

    24. don’t think anyone has seen enough of Castillo this season to make that kind of $$tatement. But we likely will see more of her in the upcoming weeks. She’s played in 16 sets 3-1-9 in kills, 1 ace, 2 SE in 12 serves. aced 5 times in 19 serve-receive, 1 dig, 4 BA.

as for Huff, don’t think that’s an option with the Green-White scrimmage Friday. Shoji returns from recruiting trip Sunday.

    As mentioned, No. 11 Stanford wins at home over No. 4 Washington. 24-26, 25-19, 16-25, 25-20, 15-13

  28. kimo browner October 21, 2015 11:52 pm

Well, I did say it and believe it. Unless she plays and falls on her face
we will never know. Stats say little bc of a lack of significant PT. Either way. I saw Koelsch, Mitchem, Huff and Guinasso and felt the same–all reserves. Casey is not a 6-3 gawky mannequin. She can stuff at the net. Let’s see if Coach gives her a shot in conference play. I believe she is $$.

  29. po'okela October 22, 2015 12:05 am

this will bode well for maglio.

it’ll give her more reps in the middle however I just pray that her and magill stay healthy as the only option we have to back them up would be castillo and I doubt she’s had any significant reps in the middle all season. she’s just gonna have to learn another position a much faster system then what she was used to during her club season.

never seen this many injuries before. what was once a very deep roster isn’t looking so deep anymore. prayers to everyone for a healthy remainder of the season.

  30. Bleachercoach October 22, 2015 12:45 am

    28. I totally agree with you on Castillo! I don’t know her practice ethics, but you can see a duck when it’s a duck. Casey Castillo is a great athlete.
I may be totally wrong but by watching her demeanor and movement when she os on the court I know she will the surprise if given the opportunity like Granato. I think she will surprise some but not me. With her 6’3″ stature she may be needed at the rate our injuries are occuring. Like some say, the “Last shall be First”.

  31. Bleachercoach October 22, 2015 12:54 am

I would love to see what Casey could do if she plays for more than 2 points. This all could be settled ?’s if she played in a whole set. She has spanked a couple digs when she entered the game once or twice but by the way she passes when she settles down could be close to Kalei Greeley. She looks like the same skill level as a freshman as Kalei but she might possess a little more pop/snap on her kills. ????

  32. 'ohanaInBellingham October 22, 2015 6:11 am

What a trooper gritting it out, knowing that we were all depending on her on the right. Mahalo, Annie, and speedy recovery.

  33. Cindy Luis October 22, 2015 8:50 am

    28. my only point was that she’s played so little that it’s hard for anyone to say she is $$. they only thing we have are stats which are a little skewed since she may have appeared in 16 sets but sometimes only for the final few points and didn’t touch a ball.
Never saw her in high school but from all reports she was amazing until her knee injury.
