Warriors: What’s next?
The Warriors have little time to brood about yesterday’s whiplash — a 22-yard field goal was wide, then New Mexico went 80 yards the other way for the winning touchdown.
The Warriors actually had a sound strategy in the fourth quarter: Grind yards, eat time. But in this mixed metaphor, the Warriors could not sink the putt.
So what’s next?
The Warriors’ wish is better health. They were without quarterback Max Wittek, running back Mel Davis, wideout Quinton Pedroza, left guard Elijah Tupai, and linebacker Jeremy Castro. After the game, nose tackle Kory Rasmussen was on crutches. Running back Paul Harris had ankle issues. Defensive end Luke Shawley did not make the trip while he sorts a personal matter.
Ikaika Woolsey played well. Any debate on the quarterback situation probably will be tabled until Wittek heals.
The Warriors return to Honolulu today, then make a U-turn to the mainland on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s game against Nevada.
We’re all frustrated. That was a bad loss but hey lets just get back at it next week…
I’m still very dejected after last nights loss. I’m sorry for the kids, the Seniors, and Coach Chow. Like the homeless situation back home in Hawai’i, Governor Ige needs to declare a “State of Emergency” for the Warrior Football Program. It may not be all Coach Chow’s fault, but he is the leader of this team. It’s his responsibility to put a wining team in the field. He is not doing that. He’s not even playing smart football. This defeat stings more than this year’s previous losses. In my eyes the UH Administrators are blinded by the fact that Coach Chow is “from” Hawai’i. They didn’t hesitate to fire Coach Mac (or ask him to resign). Time for a change, Hawai’i. Coach Chow please to the honorable thing…what that is…he’ll have to decide.
The grind it out strategy– especially with a team like us that needs to pass to move the ball and score– keeps the score close so the other team has a chance to come back. That strategy also put us into long yardage downs that made it easier for New Mexico to defend. The scouting report missed New Mexico’s ability to throw the ball and that further endangered the grind it strategy. New Mexico had as many passing attempts and better results than we did, and we ran as many times as New Mexico did trying to play New Mexico’s game while New Mexico played our game and won.
I feel for the players. Should’ve ran it up the middle again, let NM burn their last time out than let the kicker kick from the middle to attempt the FG. Chow said they wanted a TD, but to be honest, UH was desperate for a win.. Should’ve never called a bootleg on 3rd & goal. Then our defense lets a QB come off the bench, a team that barely throws the ball, just tears it up. This has been the same theme for UH since Chow took over. UH needs to force him to resign or just fire him. I’ve been a huge chow supporter but it’s time to let him go.
Ikaika Woosley played well enough to earn another start.
But in fairness to the USC transfer, Woosley wasn’t going to lead Hawaii to victory over Ohio State, Wisconsin, or Boise State, either.
A completed pass shouldn’t feel like Christmas, but that’s what happens when your incumbent quarterback has games in which he throws under fifty percent.
If Woosley is indeed the starter, and struggles, it’ll be interesting to see how much leeway he gets.
Although Sean Schroeder proved to be a capable quarterback in his second season, I’ll never understand why our coach kept him in the game no matter how badly he ran the offense during his first year.
But, then again, Cameron Higgins, when he finally got to see some extended time, went, if I recall correctly, completed four passes out of seventeen attempts.
I miss the run-and-shoot.
Greg Alexander was a mediocre talent, and yet he was leading the nation in total offense when he got injured.
This season is turning out to be a disaster. And with the list of injured players just getting longer, the outlook for the next W gets dimmer. And what is wrong with our secondary to allow a run-oriented team to score so quickly by passing? Just bad luck? Bad mana maybe. Missed 22-yard field goal. Snake-bit. This madness has to stop. A win against Nevada would really change things, but odds say that won’t happen. Warriors are poor road travelers. So many injured. And this loss may have ripped the guts out of the team. I am just hoping they can rebound to put up a good fight.
Gotta “cool head” a little. Props to Ikaika, Lakalaka, Harris, Collie, Kennedy, among others. Dropped passes still a problem in crucial series. I believe that Ikaika deserves to start against Nevada.
Man, those one-point losses are more painful than those 38-0 type of losses.
At the end of the day it all comes down to COACHING! If you don’t practice these scenarios the players aren’t gonna know what to do.
FIRST, Chow shouldn’t have NEVER stopped the clock. You make NM burn all of their timeouts.
SECOND, when NM had the ball you tell the defense to try and keep them in bounds which means shut down all of the out routes in other words KEEP THE CLOCK RUNNING! These are things a first level High School coach should know.
Sound strategy? Yes, for a team that has the ability to do it. Nothing about the offensive and defensive play all year has shown that the team can control the game. Solution? Score as much as you can. Yes, the missed field goal hurt. But You won’t hear me blame the kicker.
These types of losses are absolutely more painful, especially since it was to a team like NM. Just reminds us how low the program has sunk.
This had nothing to do with the outcome, but, man, New Mexico has amazing facilities. And with the luxury boxes, there’s so much more room for revenue growth. I think lawmakers need to go to some of these road games and see how UH — the school, not just the athletic department– is vastly underfunded. We need lawmakers who also can stimulate the economy and not just raise taxes and tsk-tsk UH.

A lot of people here have questioned whether Bailey in fact calls the plays because there really is no difference (at least significantly) in the offense. ST again has said that he does.
Here is my question then. What have you seen in the offensive play calling, even if they were more successful, that would result in 75 touchdowns?
I still believe that if Bailey is calling plays, then play book has been edited by Chow.

i’m not sure if they missed it. the scouting report was probably very accurate: new mexico is a triple option team that probably won’t be that successful in a desperate two minute drill relying on their backup quarterback who, at the time, had a less than 54% completion rate, no tds, two interceptions, and less than 5.4 yards per pass play.
no, friend. the UH offense dropped the ball, special teams dropped the ball, and then the UH defense took that hot potato and dropped it down a 10 story building.
They were trying to score, they just didn’t score. It wasn’t about intent, it was about execution.
Most lawmakers and UH administrators have no concept of the facilities at other conference schools (never mind Pac-12, but MWC schools). Many are stuck in the “You guys got it good. Stop complaining and just win with what we give you,” attitude. Many of these lawmakers can’t even maintain the roads in their districts.
The coordinators call the plays. I don’t know how many more ways I can keep saying that.
You said it. I read it. I get it. My point is, there is little difference than when Chow used to call the plays. You don’t need to say it any other way.
At this point, the frustration level is so high, anything I hear just sounds like an excuse.

But you made me see clear again….I don’t know what the football Program should do but I cannot blindly follow something that doesn’t work or give fans what they ask for.

The schedule is tough and there are way too many injuries but ultimately the head coach is accountable for his program.
University of Washington funded their new stadium, which has luxury boxes, with $50M of community donations, and a $200M 30-year bond funded by increased ticket and stadium advertising revenue. If significant revenue growth potential in Hawaii is more than just a pipe dream, UH and the Stadium Authority should line up big dollar donations and credible business case. Instead, Ben Jay and company seemed to take the “build it, and they will come” approach. And to add insult to injury, they told the regular fans that they should accept bench seating while luxury boxes would be added for the alleged big dollar donors.

I actually thought the play calling(before the last min) was fine… If we made the FG, we win….
OCSports replaying game now. Coming up on the half. Want to see the decision to take a knee with 40 seconds left, and one time out. UH was moving. NM seemed on the ropes.
The 24-14 UH lead at the half was enabled by a great defensive play that caused a turnover. Otherwise, it would have been 17-14 … or maybe 17-21 if the Lobos had continued the drive and scored. And even when it was 24-14 before NW punted, NM was throwing the ball and almost scored a TD.
40 seconds left. 14 yard line. One time out (If I counted right). And take a knee. As I recall, the 1420 feed with Curran and Veneri questioned the call. Rich and Robert called said it was a good call. I don’t even play Madden, so beats me.
It is interesting to see how little things have changed over the years. The frustration is palpable and pathetic. Chow could care less about the fans or the players. to me, the call makes sense if one of the above conditions are met:
a) you have a hyper-conservative coach running a hyper-conservative offense
b) you have no confidence in your quarterback to run a hurry up offense, execute plays, complete passes, manage the clock, and march down the field (i.e. christ. we could try and go down the field but what if the guy throws a pick six???)
c) you don’t really have confidence in your offensive scheme and the players executing it to complete passes and at least get in field goal range.
d) all of the above
The play before the field goal attempt was a play action pass to the left flat. When the receiver was covered Ikaika scrambled right and threw the ball in the right corner of the end zone. This gave our kicker a bad angle from the right hash mark. The play was designed to go left but it just didn’t work out . Norm Chow seems cursed, maybe because the way he treats people.

Mr. Tsai, I don’t trust politicians with anything. They take facts and twist them to suit their own needs, and ignore other facts when it’s convenient no matter how many times it’s explained to them.
They probably saw what happened to Boise at the last play of the half on Friday. With that in mind I’d take the lead 10 pt lead into the half as well.
The departure of Lewis Powell (Utah), Deronte Jones (Wisconsin), and Kevin Clune (Utah State) is reminiscent of the 1994 departures of Paul Johnson, Mike Sewak, and Kenny Niumatalolo.

If that roll out play worked, then everybody keeps his mouth shut. I’m wondering how come NM had everybody covered. A similar play worked in the Colorado game, with Max.

It’s obvious as the nose on Norm Chow’s face that the trek to Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Boise State left our boys physically damaged and worn out. I get that no one wants to admit or even acknowledge this, but it is what it is. Yes, we needed the money, but it comes at a terrible price we will continue to pay for the rest of season. God bless our boys who keep persevering!

Sanchez has been spot on for 99% of the time. He must be feeling bad but hope he holds his head up and realizes he is one of the star players on this team.

With a conference record is 4 wins – 23 losses, I guess fans start to second guess a lot.
If Norm is calling plays he would do the NFL decision to center the ball and allow a simple straight on FG from 12 yards out and force them to score twice in two minutes. Going for a TD in those situations and not making it could cost jobs.
This blog in its heyday had hundreds of comments in the JJ era and part of Mack tenure. I myself use to read this blog regularly. I have visited this blog infrequently over the last 2 years. Keeping Chow will continue to deteriorate the numbers of bloggers here.
After reading the comments here it has been the same o same o for the past 2 years. People are tired of reading and stating the same thing. Attendance here at the blog is eerie similar to what is happening to the attendance at the UH games. Have it hit rock bottom?
Some weeks ago I came across a former Warrior football player from the “good old days” of 2006/2007. We talked about what exciting times they were. This former player said he doesn’t attend games anymore. When I asked why he said he didn’t care much for coach Chow. Told me of how he had turned up at UH and talked to coach Chow. He said he offered to volunteer his services in support of the team. He shared with me that Chow just turned and walked away without even responding to his offer. He was perplexed by this and felt disrespected. It is quite possible to respectfully and gratefully tell someone you can’t use their help. Apparently this did not happen. The former player just shook his head and said “Chow is not a people person.”
Can I confirm this story as an eye witness?…….no…… Am I engaging in the rather insipid activity of gossip?…..yes. But the point I am trying to make is that the way you engage with people does matter. When you are Nick Saban and fabulously successful you can get away with not being Mr. Personality and people will accept it. When you are at the helm of a chronically sinking ship then whatever quirks and rough edges you have will become magnified.
So I a not surprised that the level of anger with coach Chow is so high. Mack was a nice old man. Perhaps bumbling and ill suited to be the face of Warrior football. When Mack was terminated many we’re glad, but I don’t recall many commenting on the sort of person he was, other than being a nice guy. For coach Chow it seems different.
Interesting … at 6:50 or so in the 4th, Rich M. is calling for “Run, Run, Run” and become the UH version of the triple option.

the “grind-it-out” philosophy is no different, IMHO, than play not to lose – UH this season and the past 3 do NOT have, IMHO, the coaching staff nor players to sustain such a mode – ST may be entirely correct to say that Bailey calls all the offensive plays, but if Chow says “grind-it-out” do you seriously beleive the Bailey will call a wide-open game? hell no! this would be going against the HC directive!

I had great instincts to play “flag football” at UH or mountain ball in the Bar League and Oahu Open league – playing left field, I always cheated toward center field as I knew I could cover the ground to the fair ball line – in a game against Matson, my friend was the batter and as soon as he swung I bolted toward center field to catch his sinking line drive to short left center field — he threw his bat down, came unto the field and yelled at me, “how the f–k did you catch that ball”?
the Sons of Samoa team had a pitcher who started the ball about 2-3′ feet behind the batter and it would hit the plate – I adjusted my stance to the back of the batter’s box so I could adjust to the incoming, very high ball – if I thought the ball would hit the front of the plate, I adjusted my stance while the ball was in the air — told my players to do the same and we hit the ball
I thought I was fast running the 50 yard dash in 6 seconds flat barefooted or with tennis shoes – high school record was 5.5 seconds at that time.
now, I may run the 50 in 30 seconds – did that at Ohio State field

Touch schedule, agreed. Don’t buy the injuries excuse. At this point in the season, EVERY team has injuries. 2-3 record after the first 5 was the best anyone could have asked for but a bad loss to SDS in which they were favored hurt and giving the NM game away was unacceptable. We gotta win the games like SDS and NM. Hoping for the best but expecting the worst the rest of the way.
Making a golf comparison, this loss is like missing a 2ft tap in birdie on the 17th hole that should have pushed the lead to 3 shots, and for all intensive purposes seal the win. Then step up on the 18th tee with a 2 shot lead instead of 3, and slice one OB, then 3 putt to make triple bogey and lose by 1.
Got to give New Mexico credit for never-give-up and the win.

Coach Davis said after the game that Hawaii has the toughest schedule in the nation up to this point but we should still be 2-1 on the mwc and not 0-3. Miano or June for HC, nuff said.
Midori commented during lunch if UH coaches contacted former players, like Mikey Carter, how to defend the “spread” or ask them to explain how the spread offense works so they can devise a plan to attack the spread
another poster mentioned that UH coaches nearly or completely disregarded the Lobos passing game which they used in the minutes of the game to steal a victory
yes, missing the field goal was critical, but the defense failed to stop New Mexico’s passing game in last 2 minutes of the game
easy to criticize? of course, but one must wonder how UH prepared, strategically, for for New Mexico or any other game
on the bright side, at last UH score points on the road!
No disrespect to June Jones, Rich Miano, Cal Lee, Rod York, etc, but I think that this guy would be a great hire, if UH decides to make a move. Proven head coaching experience and a winner. Mr Matlin needs to be proactive, IMHO. He’ll need time to upgrade the recruiting and quality of the players, and it’ll require resources.

Coach Chow’s failure as a head coach is clear. But that doesn’t mean that the team’s inability to come close to Bailey’s over the top pre-season predictions rests all on Chow’s shoulders. Chow hired him, but Bailey is still the OC.

Was at the game-overall a good effort. About 10 plays make these Warriors 0-2 the last two weeks. It up to them where they go. Not much else to say. Time will tell but it sure hurts.
While the OC might call the plays I believe it’s the HC who is ultimately in charge of Game planning and the 2nd half had Chow ball written all over it…play not to lose playcalling has done Hawaii in before and it did again…in all honesty it should never have come down to a field goal the the receivers were beating their men down field and across the middle all first half…
I think we all can agree that coach chow has been given enough time to implement his style of play without success. It’s time to end the suffering for the players and fans alike.
Unless you have a hack into the headset of the coaches I doubt you know who is calling the plays.
I don’t blame the kicker I blame the head coach. The game wouldn’t have been close without his field goals earlier. Poor game management by the head coach lost it in the 2nd half.
Did not see the game, read in the paper this morning that the missed field goal was from the right hash. IMO for a right footed kicker this is the hardest of the 3 position options. Not making an excuse for the kicker, just an opinion.
Straight on provides the widest target of the goal posts and usually preferred. Some kickers on these shorter attempts actually like the left hash, get the plant foot down to the target and just punch it straight. From the right your hips can open up, more variables and misses here are typically to the right. Anyone know which side the 22 harder missed?
On the next game, think it is going to be a close one again and Warriors shud be in till the end either way.
The last UH drive summed it all up. 3 time outs and rushed everything leading to false starts and no timeouts used. Hilarious
Why run Lakalaka four times in a row until he is so tired that he get’s thrown for a loss?
Why run so much on 2nd and long to set up 3rd and long?
Why not try to hit a home run with a straight on FG?
Why not call a time out rather than let the clock run on the last drive?

Rajah dat! Noticed a month ago that ST was not commenting on player health (and understandably so) except for what Coach Chow released. I was not optimistic since it is extremely unlikely that you can exchange body blows with TWO top 25 rated Big Ten teams on the road within 14 days of each other and limp away ready to take on Boise. Oh, and there’s a game in between too. They aren’t called “body bag” games lightly–and nursing your wounds waiting in airports before flying home for treatment doesn’t help too.
We oughta fire the guy the set up these games… oh, yeah, we already did. I reserve the right to be ungrateful for the $2.3 million.
I want to acknowledge the team and the injured warriors for their great efforts. Everyone must step up– even potential redshirts.
But we should insist on a nonstop charter flight be thrown in when negotiating future million $ body bag games.
#73 Don’t care who the coach is but he and his staff need to be coaches who have the innate ability to groom and develop athletes to reach their max potential. Chow in my opinion lacks this kind of attribute.

well, another possible explanation is that if bailey really has the steering wheel for the offense, then it shows how little confidence he has in the quarterback and the offense itself to execute his style of play.

Reason is…he is just not ever going to improve his record with a few wins…he will be recorded in history as a losing coach…who almost single handily…dismantled the once proud record of football at the University…he is just digging himself deeper in a hole…he will never ever be able to recover..
Just feel so sorry…for those that played…or have played…or coached under him… must be awful hard to defend him…and to the fans n boosters…who have stayed away… n turned away from attending games n supporting the University… we be good again in a few years…hang on…

It’s hard watching our football team, either in person or on TV. If there is something called karma, then for sure this football program has had bad karma for so long. UH finds a way to lose when a win was in the grasp on Saturday by just kicking a short field goal. Then they can’t make a stop when they know the Lobos has to throw the ball and we bust a coverage to let the receiver score the winning TD.
It would be near impossible to win 5 of the next 6 games to be bowl eligible. The way they are playing I wouldn’t be surprised if we end up 2-11 or if lucky 4-9. So what, then, about Coach Chow’s fate? What will AD Matlin do? Does he run the string for the 5th and final year or does he give a $250,000 buyout on the 5th
year. What will attendance be like? What about the recruits? Everybody feels badly that the team is losing. But, when you come down to it, the buck stops at the Head Coach. Somebody has to be accountable for this terrible record after 3 1/2 years. He was never a college or NFL head coach prior to this. By his own words, “I’m too old for this.” I agree with that. The younger coach is a more savvy, innovative, technology driven, more energetic person.
I agree with Dave Reardon what he said a while ago that the fans of Hawaii football fans deserve better. Chow is a good man, a decent man, just as Coach McMackin is and I wish them the best in life. But, it’s bigger than one man. It’s about the UH football program. Time for a change. Should have changed one year ago. At a lot of other football programs they don’t wait around to make a change. They don’t even wait until the end of the season. There are a lot of good Head Coaches out there. Find them.
The one thing I like about chow is the various looks at offense. It gets boring seeing the same offensive line up with rns and pistol, even ifs it’s more affective except in big games.

Will UH AD David Matlin, with the blessing of his boss, fire Norm Chow Monday morning and replaced him with Offensive Coordinator Don Bailey as interim coach till a permanent one is found, hopefully by the end of the season.
There are six games left on the 2015 schedule. Personally I would like to see the return of former Warrior coach June Jones and revive the football program again like he did in 1998.
My prediction: Nevada wins 31-21.
Checking the stats. I like what Hawaii did. 23 1st downs; 10/18 3rd down efficiency; 220 yards rushing on 50 carries; 195 yards passing. Only breakdowns were: 1) Special teams: allowed 100-yard kick-off return for TD, and 2) Secondary: could not defend the pass; allowed New Mexico to score way too easily by a back-up quarterback. And still thinking about the San Diego St game, I checked their stats v. San Jose St. (SDSU 30 – SJSU 7). I was surprised they absolutely demolished San Jose St., allowing the Spartans only 148 total net offensive yards, of which, only 35 yards by rushing. So in contrast, the Warriors did not do so badly. SDSU looking pretty strong. So in reflecting about yesterday’s loss, there are a lot of positives. I say the Warriors can win against any team remaining on the schedule.

Please no June Jones. Not now, not ever. If he could of came back after Mack retired/fired, then I would have wanted him then. Now everybody spreads it out. He may have a few new wrinkles to his offense but I think he is done as a head coach. He should be a marketing director for UH and bring more $$$ to the athletic program. Or buy a house on Oahu(if he sold his) and run for senate and help bring $$$ to UH athletics. He still has that presence and ideas to make a difference in the legislature. People will listen to him.
I have been patient for three-years. Like most others on this board. My posts will support that.
The San Diego State loss for me was the turning point. This is the year we should win the games that we should. And it is not happening. New Mexico was a disgrace.

Re: Scheduling.
It was during a two-week span in 2013 when the UH AD finalized the Wisconsin and Ohio State games. So, a Midwest game was already scheduled when it was decided to add another one for the same year.
I think it would be interesting to play in Australia next year, but:
1) Not against a Pac-12 team.
2) Not the week before a road game against Michigan
As I understand it, part of the deal is UH would get 200 round-trip tickets. Now, if UH brought its entire roster, then it makes sense. But we all know how it goes. There would be UH officials there, BOR, etc. Not sure what the benefit would be to the football program.
It would be bad to go out there for the exposure and get your butt kicked. Too bad they probably wouldn’t consider doing it with UH vs an FCS team.
Notice the past few games that every opponent runs the WR down on a “streak” pattern to pull the 2 safeties to the edges and drop a receiver over the wide open middle; neither safety have the intuition to see how the play is developing ( position of the WR to the CB and watching the QB ) before committing to the sidelines; and not enough speed to reverse field to help the LB cover the TE or RB
is it the BD coach who fails to see this pattern and talk to the players; or, the
safeties who disregard their instructions and do their own thing?
can say the same for the 49ers who were caught flat footed by the same offensive scheme against the Giants only to lose in the last few seconds of the game
Mr Matlin, if you read my post, what/how will you address the failure of UH football? Will you have to moral courage/alas to fire Chow and make Bailey the temp HC?

Since Nevada joined the WAC in 2000,
From what I see it seems to be Bailey’s offense. He does like to run and uses the run to set up the pass. The difference is at his former school he had playmakers. Go to type players. Explosive running. QB that could throw the long ball. Receivers that caught the ball. It took him a while to get his offense going. But I don’t think he will have the time here to do it. What I hoped from him was that he would get our players to execute better. I see it at times. Just not enough.
UH needs to pass on the game down under. Doesn’t make sense to fly half across the globe the week later to Ann Arbor. What is the benefit for UH to play in Australia? I don’t see any, IMHO.
I had hoped to watch the Warriors in the Hawaii Bowl this year. Bought four tickets so I could attend with my wife and kids. Thought it was a good “bet” at the start of the season. The kids are now grown and living away but come home for the holidays. They watched Warrior football as little children, attending all of the games with us. My daughter just texted me from the foreign country she is living in inquiring about our last minute loss. Why am I telling you this? Because this team means a lot to a lot of people. It is Hawaii’s team. Hawaii people, wherever they live, can connect back home by following the team. It’s not Norm Chow’s team, he is only a temporary proprietor. The tradition, the alumni of the team and fans are what is permanent. We want our proud tradition back.

71. He shanked it. Not like he barely missed it. I actually thought that it may have been blocked until I saw the replay. Then I though phew a penalty on New Mexico. But after the double check conference the referees decided to pick up the flag. I had no doubt in my mind that our kicker would have made the next kick.
Throw scheduling, X’s and O’s, play calling out the door.
This team simply does not know how to win games from the day Norm Chow took over. It’s a mentality that Norm doesn’t install confidence in this team to get things done when dealt with adversity. Mentally tough and disciplined teams have 0 to do with how talented your players are. This team has talent. Just doesn’t know how to find a way to grab a win. 4 years is enough. This team means too much to the people of this state and I don’t know how much longer this can go on.
Firing Norm right now would not mean throwing in the towel by any means, South Carolina won a game without Spurrier. The Dolphins were awesome after firing Philbin. Fire Chow, let Tom Mason be interim. Start searching for new coach now so he can start recruiting.

That 41-38 loss changed the trajectory of the program.
I remember either a Star-Bulletin or The Honolulu Advertiser writer pointing this out, because this loss came the season after Hawaii won the Holiday Bowl against Illinois.

122. Naeole is the most inexperienced coach on staff and has done a bad job developing and recruiting players. So that’s a no for me. He also walked out on the team during the off season for like a week. No thanks
My top choice would be Abe but he’s pretty new as well so I don’t see the AD giving him that type of responsibility. Mason was interim when June was ran out of SMU so I believe he can run the team for the time being.
Chow ain’t dead man walking just yet. I can’t agree with those who want him fired now. Not unless that would mean increased attendance or the team winning out. We have six games left it my opinion keeping Chow in place gives us the best chance of winning.
End of 1st half. Special teams booboo gave NM its first td. This is one area I don’t think that we have fixed in Chow era. Our defense helped NM to get their 2nd td by giving their offense 20 yards in penalties. Mental stuff that still plagues the team. Should have been a goose egg for them in the 1st half.
The guy missed a short fieldgoal. Would the rhetoric be the same if it had gone through the uprights?
The one lesson that UH should have learned is you can’t build a solid football program on the cheap. You can’t handcuff a head coach with a manini budget for his staff. In my opinion Chow tried to rebuild with too many apprentices and not enough journeymen. Not to say we haven’t had good coaches but too many first time D1 coaches. First timers who may have ability but still learning their trade. How many current and past assistants were given their first coaching gig by Chow?
This is gonna sound like preaching, so I apologize up front. There are some good players on this team that play hard every down. Lakalaka is someone who lets his play do the talking. But does every guy on this team share the same kind of heart and character? I’m sure the players know about Chow being on the block week after week. So for those players on this team who don’t get it, what’s up? If they haven’t figured it out by now, even a change of coach tomorrow probably won’t make much of a difference. No one can ask for anything more if you are doing your best. Sometimes, athletes don’t realize that they can be better than what they only think is their best. Coaches can only do so much. But let’s face it, offensive schemes only work if you execute, and only players execute schemes.
Unfortunately, things have gotten to a point where a change of the head coach might be the only thing that will bring fans back into the stands. And if there are still players on this team who still don’t get it if that happens, then it would be fair to say that they probably never will.

Just finished watching the game again. Interesting how Chow let the clock run down at the end saving his time outs. All we needed was to get into fieldgoal range but also needed save as much time as possible. Weird ending. Kinda like we gave up.

People aren’t just complaining to complain at this point. There are legitimate issues. It has gone beyond the complaints of those who are never satisfied.
I am pretty sure that firing Chow now would not help us win any more games than if he were to stay on.
My thoughts on why he needs to be released isn’t about this season but the future of the program and giving the needed time to a slow UH administration, drawn out hiring laws and the time for the new coach to both find assistants and hit the ground running on recruits and familiarize himself with program.
I know cutting the line mid-season may be looked at by some players and mainly the seniors as UH and fans giving up on them. I don’t think anything could be done to change their minds if they did in fact feel that way.
We have to balance the sensitivities and needs of the current players with the fact that the program as a whole is needs to be looked out for, and that includes ensuring we give our future the best chance at success.

I agree. Maybe the budget is to blame, but Chow’s staff, especially with hires like Wynn and Matthews, shows what we are lacking.
The HC is only as good as the assistants that help to bring together the total picture. I am severely disappointed with how Matthews our WR coach has failed to address the issues that have been plaguing this corp.
Earlier conversations about facilities – was this an issue when UH had winning seasons? About injuries – the preseason observation about this team was depth and quality depth. Also, other teams are probably dealing with health issues. But one wonders why the plays look so boring, lack of misdirection, and the receivers lack consistency. So far, no one receiver has been the go to guy. Every week another name appears as reception leader.
I think the UH administration would like to delay Norm’s termination as long as possible. This gives Matlin less time to seek the funding needed to attract a coach or to seek donations to cover hiring a new coach. If Matlin cannot force a decision right now, then at the end of the season, by default due to lack of time and lack of support and money from the Administration, Chow gets retained (or we are looking for a new coach during Spring practice next year with no money to hire a new coach). Unfortunately, this is politics and politics shaped by the lack of money to meet financial problems at the University.
Nevada is next. This past week was severely disappointing to say the least. Watched the final 8 minutes from the field with Shane Austin. I said yesterday that about 15 plays separate this team from being very respectable going back to the first and goal that never was at WI. So now what happens? They can play winning football if they eliminate the errors. If not I do not care to think of the consequences. The roster has to be able to absorb the injuries and play on. So we will see. They did not get beat the last two weeks-they beat themselves in a whole lot of ways—No reason to hang your head, that accomplishes nothing. So we will see what occurs this week and go on from there-GO WARRIORS

The contract says that if you fire him then UH will have to pay him his ENTIRE salary within 30 days, that mean everything he’s owned this year PLUS his $250.000 he’s owed next year. I say it’ll be money well spent.

#124 Mason has been here less than a year and is too laid back for my taste. So I respectfully disagree.
As an example, being too laid back during NM’s last drive and not putting any pressure on their qb when it was obvious to the entire world that they were going to pass. He just doesn’t seem like the type of guy that could inspire. I could easily see a lot of guys quitting (on effort) if he became interim.
If I were a player, I’d prefer to take new orders from a guy who has been around for 4-years, and played in the NFL rather than a new guy who just came in from being an interim at SMU (well, he did win one-game). So if Naole took off for a week … I wonder if it was because he butt heads with NC ? That makes sense. We all need a break when we are stuck in things are going in the wrong direction and we are powerless to change it by ourselves. BTW, I enjoy your posts.

This is what I think about whether UH needs to start looking for a new head football coach now. I feel a head coach’s job is important in assembling a staff; establishing an offensive and defensive philosophy and to get the coaches that match both the strategies and the personalities of the coaching staff. You know, team building. But one of the glaring things about the past three seasons, and now the fourth, is that Chow has had a revolving door of assistants coming and going. Absolutely no stability. So Year-4 looks like Year-1. So far, the results on the field and in the win column also looks the same. In fairness, maybe this is a good staff he has finally put together, yet somehow it feels like we are going sideways. So that takes me back to the beginning with the offensive and defensive philosophies and strategy. If the coaching staff does everything right to support the strategies, but we are not seeing the results, then maybe the strategy is the wrong one? If it is, then a new coach and staff is needed. So getting started now in the search for a new head coach is the smart thing to do. But if the decision is that the strategy is correct, and the right team is in place to support it, then do nothing more except to hope for the best. And it seems that’s what we’ve been doing these past four years.
the head coach is ultimately responsible. You could have a good CEO, but if the company isn’t growing and being profitable according to the wishes of the shareholders and the board, then ultimately the CEO is the one who gets kicked to the curb.

well. who recruited the players? head coach and his staff. who is responsible for developing these players and getting them to perform when the lights come on? head coach and his staff. like i said, travel is travel, scheduling is scheduling, the budget is what it is. but norm chow understood all these constraints when he took the job that paid him half a million a year, base salary.
and what was the expectation set by norm chow himself when he took the podium wearing the maile lei? it wasn’t “we are going to try hard every game and play our hearts out, win or lose.” that’s important, yes, but his stated goal was “we are going to win football games. and we will win a lot of football games.”
right now, he has the second worst record in UH football history, aside from von appen, and I suspect it’s because the current mountain west is much weaker than the WAC of the mid to late 90s, got to pad his stats by playing D-IAA teams, and he got an extra year from von appen.
there’s no question about this. chow has got to go.

Does someone remember when the OC was hired it was mentioned that his contract was for two years. If he’s not retained by the new regime, what is his buyout clause?

I would rather have Chow next year over June Jones or Miano. June Jones ran SMU into the ground, wanted to leave to go to ASU, then quit on SMU. Lets remeber he also left UH high and dry. I cant believe people actually want him back. I loved the run n shoot days but those are the past and his final years at SMU show that he was disinterested and his ways are dated. And Miano isnt even qualified enough to be a assistant on a decent D-1 team.
Firing Chow if they lose to Nevada will be the best thing UH athletics could do in a long time.

June Jones ran SMU into the ground is complete BS! Just think about where they were before he got there. They had it worse than what we’re going through right now. He literally brought SMU back from the dead. Once he brought them back to life the Univ. and the fans got COCKY and BIG HEADED and thought they could do better than him. That’s the thanks he got for reviving a dead program.
