Family ties
One of the best things about road trips is the eve of the game.
In the hotel lobby, family members from different points of the country will spend time with their sons.
At Wisconsin, Ne’Quan Phillips’ mother and brother were there.
Dr. Lynn Zwahlen leaves his dental practice in Modesto, Calif., to watch his son hold a clipboard during games. Quarterback Aaron Zwahlen is on track to redshirt this season.
The past weekend, Jason Wright made the 8-hour drive from Denver to visit with his son, backup center Brenden Urban.
Cornerback Nick Nelson’s parents made the two-stop trip from the D.C. area.
And Stephanie Moore surprised her son, tackle RJ Hollis, by traveling from Phoenix. Moore, like her son when he was redshirting, was caught on TV dancing in the stands.
Nose tackle Kory Rasmussen’s grandfather also was there.
Even former UH AD Jim Donovan, his wife and daughter went to Albuquerque to watch safety Joshua Donovan.
Parents on the mainland find any means to follow their sons’ games. It’s nice when they get a chance to watch in person.

At Ohio State and Wisconsin, we had a guy from Lanai who goes to every away game and home game to support the PLAYERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! He says it’s important that the players know that Hawaii supports them!
I repeat this because here is a guy on a tiny island who makes the commitment to support the team where ever they play.
We know he was at New Mexico and will there at Reno.
Re previous thread, i heard that June Jones said he quit SMU because they didn’t want him anymore.
I like the idea of letting Chow go now and install an interim HC with Bailey or Mason.
And, announce the position NOW to reduce the “time factor” to select a new HC and I kindly ask the “power brokers” to remain silent on the selection and allow the selection committee to do their job.
History has not been kind to UH whenever you pressure the school to select a particular person. Who will take the heat for the failures?

I don’t see the benefit of firing Chow mid season and naming Mason as interim head coach. Either way the players know the coaching staff will not be around next year. Better to make the announcement this will be Chow’s last year allowing UH to begin the process of looking for a replacement now. Let Norm Chow finish out the year and go out knowing he did his best.
I supported whoever was coaching at the time but I believe nothing personal to Coach Chow but the time is now. He has become a huge liability to the financial health of the program. His offensive culture has become offensive. He lost the team’s mojo during the second half by not being aggressive offensively. Matlin needs to make the change now and allow Bailey to run his offense.
I can’t see the logic in letting Chow go now other than appeasing the portion of the fan base who see no hope in the winning 5 out of the next 7 games. When it becomes apparent we won’t have a winning season Matlin should announce that Chow would be allowed to finish the season but won’t be retained for his 5th year.
To me it’s better to allow Chow to finish the year and pay his buyout rather than to release him early and be stuck for his full 5th year salary. If the Chow out now crowd can guarantee revenues will increase by the amount it’ll cost to buy him out or decrease by that amount if we keep him then I might reluctantly go along with it.
What is Chow’s buy out clause? Does it matter if we let him go now or at the end of the season? To me, it’ll cost UH $500k either way for this season and $200k for next year.
I think firing Chow early will not give us a leg up in finding his replacement. We all know the process – announce the opening with it’s closing date for applications. It’s good to announce the opening as early as possible but what is the date you’d set as the last day to accept applications? UH has a history of foot dragging from the closing date for applications until a coach is finally in place.
I hope Dave Matlin is beating the bushes raising money to fund a buyout and to be able to compete salary wise in attracting “good” applicants. For perspective Kalani Shitake was making $575K before he left Utah and Adrian Klemm $650K plus incentives at UCLA.

islandman — I dunno, but that’s plausible. After all, what bowl game has he taken them to lately? After all, he only took their first two bowl games in 20+ years after the NCAA death penalty so severe that “SMU’d” is a horror term. What challenge is left? He already orchestrated the greatest NCAA turnaround in hstory (or tied it) with Hawaii. The Hawaii Bowl was created and he took us to BCS bowl. We were all bummed to lose that one–and him, but I figure he would have fired him in 3 years if we didn’t get to another BCS bowl.
Rumors and desires about JJ returning to coach Hawaii? Can he pull a hat trick and orchestrate a 3rd greatest turnaround? That would be a suitable challenge for him…the hat trick. Everyone who shouting “Fire the Coach” should embrace the only coach that has the resume for resurrecting programs. On the other hand, in Hawaii he brought in assistant coaches who had around 200 years NFL coaching experience to help. Still got?

As of 3 Sept, season ticket sales were around 15 thousand … “and on pace for the lowest number on record”. IMO, the sooner UH can inspire fans with a good head coach, the sooner season ticket sales will recover. In addition, ticket cost have been pretty flat for several years, and the enthusiasm of actually winning would likely spill over into acceptance of reasonable ticket cost increases (after the wins roll in). If UH is going to make a coaching change, the sooner the better for hiring and recruiting. It would seem to me that other universities will be looking to hire later in the season, so why not get ahead of the game and see who might be interested now? That is not to say that the looking and the talking can’t go on informally, but it would seem more ethical and transparent to just make it official.

ok, Chow is fired today. This somehow will lead to increased revenue this football season? Whats the logic behind that conclusion? The only way I see revenue rising this year is if the team wins more games.
If the players continue to play hard for the coaches I see no reason to fire him now, that can be handled officially at the end of the season.

K HC chow MUST be tying OC bailey’s hands on play calling…. how can you explain promising to scoring 40 pts per game and playing fast and then only score 3 points after leading at halftime 24-10? chow must give full run of the offense to bailey for his system to work! whatchu guys think?
The coaching carousel hasn’t started to spin. What good is getting on the ride now given the hiring process we have in place. Illinois fired their HC the week before their season opener I’ll bet they’ll wait until season’s end before making their final list of candidates.
Personally I like Norm Chow. He had good intentions. He wanted to win but more importantly he wanted to build a program. He wasn’t seeking personal glory or career advancement. He’s a local boy who thought he could leave a lasting legacy by putting the football program on a firm foundation. A foundation much like Boise which is not dependent on having a “hot coach” as much as having a good coach that understands the culture of the program. Too bad good intentions are not enough to win football games.

19. CB….I agree with your sentiment and I feel much the same. It was possibly a great story line of a local boy who went away and did well coming home to build a program. Also of an Asian American man who had been passed over for HC jobs because he didn’t quite fit the expected mold of how HCs are supposed to be.
Instead it looks like a situation where those who wouldn’t give him the HC jobs were simply right in their assessment that he was not the man for the job. This is a sad story and a lousy way for a man to end his career.
I would still be ecstatic if Norm pulled it out of the fire and we made a bowl this year. It would be a great story of how at the last moment things came together and all the doubters and critics were just plain wrong. Recently I have crossed over into the doubters and critics club. I would be so very happy to be wrong. But I fear the happy ending is only in the movies and here, in the reality of a more than half empty Aloha Stadium, we can only grieve what might have been and look to the future with hope.
SteveM, I posted my guess yesterday. Nevada Reno 24 – Hawaii 20. Thinks it is going to be close and down to the wire dog fight.
If a change is made, I hope that Dave Matlin is being proactive, now, and has candidates lined up, when and if Chow is relieved. There are a number of successful up and coming young head coaches at the D-IAA/FCS level. Change of culture and attitude may be needed.
Of course, mathematically, this season could still be turned around with UH winning 5 out of the 6 remaining games, but that’s a mighty tall order. Regardless, I still feel for and support the players and their efforts.

Who’s going to be our QB this weekend?
Woolsey should start this week due to his productivity demonstrated in the first half against New Mexico. The offense seems to pick up the pace more with Ikaika in there, and he did this without Pedroza and Kemp. Also need to remember that Ikaika is only a junior, with an eye out for next season. I think that they have a better chance with him, IMHO.

For years, this one guy insists that the games are fixed, or rather, in his parlance, “Brah, they’re choreographed.”
In particular, the last game of the day, because, according to him, Vegas has to make their money back.
Keeping that in mind, as I watched the waning moments of the New England/Indianapolis game, I told my nephew: “Watch. The Patriots are going to let Indianapolis score.”
All the money was on New England, moving the line from -10 to -5.
What I didn’t know was that the blocked extra point affected the second half line.

The center was so low, he looked like he was trying to lick the turf.
Three HC candidates that I like are Jeff Ulbrich, Adrian Klemm and Kalani Sitake. Young guys that can recruit very well

has anyone else noticed that norm chow is never in any of the huddles on the sidelines during time outs or change of possessions? he rarely talks to his coaches or players. he looks totally lost. da only thing i do see him doing is crying to da refs about some bad call they just made.

Reality….if you got no money to pay competitive wages, for get about it! Start looking for high school coaches who want to test themselves and get a chance to do it at the D1 level. With the kind of $’s we willing to dish out this might be more realistic.
You want to wait another two to three years for the kind of program you want? You’ll have to.
You want to go back to the “good old days”? We could but remember the man quit during the season. Someone mentioned “because he wasn’t wanted”…want a coach like that? This town can really make a coach feel unwanted…LOL!
Met a former AD who was “let go” because of things that happened. Dude wound up in a better situation and is looking really slim and trim and most of all Happy.
How many coaches have we had from year one of Chow’s tenure? The kids must be having a lot of new things to focus on every year with a new position coach.
I suggest we ask DR to be on the selection committee. He get “da eye” for good coaches. He talk like he da man with the plan.

I do not agree about firing coach now so we can start looking. You are talking about uh people in charge. You must not have been around for last many years. They are unable to do anything right. You can give them 12 months and they will still mess up.
Injuries are not an excuse. It is a fact. Where are you going to find 34 healthy players for your new coach? Uh put Ohio state and Wisconsin on the schedule so they could make easy money cause they are unable to figure out where to get money.
Stay with coach for the season. Be loyal fans to the end. If junejones comes back we are not renewing our seasons tickets of 30 years. Would rather have these nice men than a bunch of thugs, as we were known as.
Don’t come to the games. Loyal fans don’t really care. The fans in our section are there for every game.

For sure, I do hope the next HC is a young guy with clear vision/strategist with a well written/developed plan; excellent leader who is willing to listen and learn; organizes/supervises well;, gives assistant coaches their marching orders; follows up on progress; be innovative; hellave recruiter who can sense hidden potential in every recruit and be willing to share his secrets – delegate authority, but be accountable/responsible for all that occurs
to develop younger assistants, HC must be willing to teach them principles; not situations to help them grow
perhaps it’s my imagination, but the players, not all, seem to be undisciplined be it running routes, blocking, maintain assignments, catching the ball, etc. – all goes back to coaching?
I had great expectations when the new coaches were hired, but now they are nearly gone — so sad!

The sooner UH can convince fans that they have a good coach, staff, and recruiting opportunities, IMO the sooner season ticket sales can stop their slide and actually increase. If UH will not be paying top dollar and getting a big name coach, then results will likely be needed before a big change occurs. The harder it is for a new coach to get the staff in place and start recruiting, the longer it will be before revenue increases. So I agree with #16 that wins will likely be needed before revenue increase. And whatever UH can do to get the pieces in place in time for the 2016 season, the sooner a winning season should arrive. If there is a way to avoid it, I just don’t want to hear the excuse that the coach lost a year of recruiting because of a late hiring.
Just saw on Inside Access OC16 the missed 22 yard field goal several times and in slow motion. This is what I saw technically. Most important the kicker’s plant foot (the non-kicking foot) was not pointed/aimed to the center of the goal posts. Upon setting the plant foot, it slipped causing it to turn and slide left towards the left goal post. Where the plant foot is aimed, is typically where the ball travels. When he went to set his plant foot it was not firmly planted on the cleats on the bottom of the shoe, he ended up on the outside sole of his left shoe. Also the plant foot was too far from the ball, the slip contributed to this. His hips opened up too early facing straight to the goal posts before making contact with the ball, no right to left leg swing to generate power whereby the hips open after contact with the ball when kicked correctly. All of these technical items contributed to the low pull hook to the left. Due to the slippage also was not able to generate very much hip and leg speed to get the football airborne. I noted prior that from the right hash for a right footed kicker, this location is more challenging than from straight on or from the left hash.

#39 … How many times have we heard attacks on previous coaches and current players as the reason for Coach Chow’s losses? I have become habituated, but I think you are right to challenge them.
IMO, Sanchez is a good kicker. Nice range, strong leg and so far this season he has been quite accurate.
My favorite all time Rainbow Warrior kickers; great results and clutch in prime time are listed in this order. No brainer is Jason Elam first, from the past is Reinhold Stuprich 2nd and 3rd is Dan Kelly.
aloha everyone !! when jj moved to SMU . it was because of broken promises !! coaches pay all moved up , up grades to field , locker rooms and more pay the head coach was all made because they lost jj !! and mackman came out the lucky guy because of jj !! then change of powers at UH again then out with mack and back to lower the pay of head coach and welcome chow !! and know we are back to square one !! 4 year all down hill !! time for change ?? i say yes !! nice young up and coming coach ? i say no !! to much going on at UH !! JJ? i say yes !! now all the problem !! and will be well rested !! and if money was the deal with him he would of taking the NFL over hawaii the 1st time !!
The element destroying UH football is apathy. Of the season ticket holders, how many are not bothering to attend games? Look around you at the next game. How many casual walk ups do you see at the stadium box office? The team gives the appearance of being engaged. But watch them on the sidelines. Watch how the HC acts. Did you see how the team reacted after the missed FG? They did not turn against their kicker. They simply lost focus and did not have the will to fight on. It’s time to cut losses. The AD should select one of the Associate Coaches and with him have a meeting with the players. All of them are men who see this coming, but as men of character will support the HC until the cord is cut. Everyone will breathe a sigh of relief. The suspense of the inevitable is worse than keeping the status quo. It’s time.

The sooner we start on the process of selecting a new coach, the better. At UH these things take time. They need to discuss how they are going to do it and how they are going to pay for it. They need to round up money, including private donations which have been offered to pay for a new coach, but turned down by UH and the athletic department. Most important, the AD needs to convince the Administration that this is going to happen. If he does not act soon enough to make this so it is really happening, the Administration will delay and keep Chow at least another year.
This game is in the past. Did have the chance to meet Marcus Kemps parents at a breakfast place, visited with Trip Woolsey again, met RJ Hollis’ mother and spent the last moments of the game with Shane Austin. I was there with about 15 former players from th early 70’s. Arranged some field passes and the guys were like little kids when they got close to the action. We raised 500.00 at an impromptu auction at our hosts home on Friday. All in all except for the outcome it was great. As you run thru tons of emotions please take into account this is your one and only Major College event Football-support it as I will always continue to do and better days are ahead. In my opinion if and when a new coach is sought he must be a recruiter, fundraiser, public and fan oriented and most certainly a coach. That is pretty much what at least 50% or so of successful coaches at that level are today. Again in my opinion a prototype is PJ Fleck at Western Michigan of the MAC check out what he has done for a program stuck in the mud. We have much more to offer as it is and if the right people open their eyes and have the guts to invoke change we could have a tremendous program top to bottom. So if your a Warrior fan stay a Warrior fan and stand tall in the face of adversity and disappointment, this too shall pass- GO WARRIORS!!!!
Addendum to my prior post we raised 500.00 for Na Koa on Friday. And A house as your mugshot know I might get upset or disappointed but my loyalty remains untested-I am a Warrior fan supporter backer and whatever else you want to throw at me!!!!!! Lets get after the Wolfpack
Hopefully the loss will motivate them for next week to play even harder. It was good to see an offense that was scoring some points.
#46. Matlin appears to be a pretty akamai guy. He should have several plans to implement depending on how the season plays out. One scenario that might keep him up at night is the team finishing 7-6. With that record it would be hard to release a coach who has just taken a team to it’s first bowl game in 5 years but is that record good enough to warrant some type of extension of a couple years which is common protocol when retaining a coach on the last year of his contract.
The AD at UNLV faced this same situation in 2013. A coach with a dismal 3 year record who goes 7-6 in his 4th year. UNLV gave him an extension. We all know what happened in 2014 .
What would you do if this were to happen. Would you still release him? Would you keep him on as a lame duck? Would you bow to protocol and give him an extension?
Interesting morning in the Honolulu Star Advertiser. I Couldn’t find a single mention of Rainbow Warrior football.
