Oregon St made Washington look vulnerable. Maybe Wahine will see them in the regionals. Opportunity to settle an account.
Washington is playing without their leading OH, who is hitting over .300 on the year.
I think the wahine can beat washington, but it will still be just has hard as years past. Sybeldon is no slouch and Strickland and scambray play terrific defense.
Did coach say who is going to start at setter this weekend?
There are sections assigned to the specific teams playing. When buying your tickets you need to call that arena and ask to have tickets in the Hawaii section.
Brandon, speaking of Sybeldon, I thought they did not set her enough in their match against Oregon St. And Strickland has a terrific serve. After they reach 17 or 18 points, Washington puts it into overdrive. I’d just love to see a Wahine-Washington match.

Who is setting the first team in practice? I hope Higgins won’t be needed this week. We need to rest some players and see what the newer ones can do.

re: setters.
they are alternating on the ‘A’ side. They continue to switch OH’s and MB’s too. At the moment, Maglio the only middle with Koelsch and Granato, Kahakai, Manu-Olevao and Taylor.
He hasn’t said who will start but would not be surprised if it’s Koelsch.
Higgins looks to be at leas 90 percent. moving well.
I hope to see Higgins playing some in the back row. Her serve is a very important weapon in the Wahines’ arsenal. This competition between the two has been beneficial for both similar to what has transpired with the middles. A little progress each match is needed to prepare us for the tournament.
I hate to say it, but Kendra offers so much more to the team. Her blocking and offensive mindedness has helped the Wahine grind out wins in key situations. Only playing time well help with her set locations. The only thing is the high ball sets may not be helpful against the bigger, faster teams like USC, Washington, and Nebraska.
#9 Great to hear Higgins feeling better. This is going to be a tough one. With 9 blocks by Koelsch it would be wise to do the front row/back row rotation with them. Higgins has a great jump serve! With the lineup at practice Olevao and Granato, 2 shorter girls 5’11″or 6’0″ versus 6’2 and 6’3″ Greeley and Castillo up front it really doesn’t fare well with big opponents. Unless they start to hit smart high hands or off the side of the blockers hand their hitting will be ineffective as well as their lack of blocking prowess.
They cannot just pound every ball….Maybe in high school against 5-7 to 5’11” players they could…Don’t get me wrong I am not questioning their athleticism just their size at the net
12. think you’re reading way too much into one lineup that was together briefly. . As I said “at the moment.” they were alternating at all positions, as they do all the time in practice. In that instance, it was Granato LS, Maglio MB and Taylor RS in the front row, hardly small. Manu-Olevao in the back row along with Kahakai and Koelsch.
13. Absolutely I understand reading too much into one lineup…but for some reason Casey Castillo never mentioned much playing LS with Taylor RS and Maglio MB which would be even more hardly small. Everytime I have witnessed 6’3″ Castillo hit or block she just looks big over the net and pretty successful. Not taking away from Granato. She is a super player but 3-4″ shorter than Casey. But that is why I am a bleacherccouch and not the successful head coach for 40 plus years with over 1,000 wins. Buckaroo!!!
I love this team and every girl on our roster. I am just a die-hard and cannot read the newspaper for a week if we lost. (poor thing!) A little over the top but very passionate for our program!!! You Go Girls!!
Beachercoach, I am a kindred spirit. What got me through the UCLA lose was the details of why the lose occurred and what needed to be fixed provided by Cindy and this group of knowledgable bloggers. As you can see, they have been very accurate so far. I also wonder why we don’t see more of Casey but I think Dave has a plan for all of his charges.
#15, you are not alone and I know all of us would love to have all the details of every practice day, but Cindy can’t give away all the secrets to our competition. I will be very surprised if we don’t see some changes when the Wahine play LB and CalPoly again.
Not sure what kind of details are wanted. Practice is pretty boring to be honest so not a lot of secrets to give away, if they can be considered secrets.
Lots of reps and moving people into other positions so that all get to work with both setters.
As for Castillo’s lack of playing time, She is behind some pretty good players. If on the left, depending if it’s L1 or L2, she’d be replacing Manu-Olevao or Greeley, both of whom are in the passing rotation, or Granato who is next option from what we’ve seen. If she is used RS, then she’s behind Taylor.

As mentioned. all players are getting reps on A and B sides and in various combinations. Did I mention Mitchem specifically? No. Didn’t mean she wasn’t playing with the ‘A’ team.
Gave you a snapshot of what one moment in practice was like. Also didn’t mention again that couple of players are late on Thursdays because they have labs. Doesn’t seem pertinent.
It’s a numbers game at this point and they have more talent than spots on the court. One other thing from practice: Magill continues to work on her slide but if it gets used in a match is another thing. Very much a timing issue and it’s hard since she jumps so high and is up so quickly.
