Thoughts on this weekend’s matches vs. Davis and Irvine?
Interestingly UCI came in a day early and got in a practice yesterday at the arena after UH’s. Davis practiced before the Wahine.
Did get to see Kaleo Baxter, former UH volunteer assistant who was on Pestolesi’s staff at IVC and now at UCI.
He mentioned that of the 15 players on current UH roster, he has coached 8 of them either at UH, IVC or at ‘Ime ‘Ike.

Wow, I knew Pestosi had coached some of the girls on the current/past UH teams but I didn’t think it was over 8 out of 15 in the current roster. Talk about a resource to feed the team! Maybe not on purpose, but that is a lot of good talent coming over. GO BOWS!
With the rash of injuries incurred by top tier teams it will be interesting to note how Shoji plays out the next 3-weeks with his top 4-replacements–Koelsch, Mitchem, Castillo and Granato. The season ends with with a grueling road schedule of 6 games in a 15-day interval. Following the conclusion of conference play The wahine will return home to rest and prepare for the subregionals which begin 12-days later.
Now, rather than later is when these players need meaningful PT.
Especially Mitchem and Castillo in the front row. Think block and strike with these two. Koelsch is a no brainer and if she goes into a tank when Higgins returns that is on the coach.
Granato is not ready for primetime front row play but she can contribute at the end lines, serve and the 3-meter line.

Watching the Ohio St – Purdue match. Both teams look really good. They have good outside hitters and play great defense. Passing good too. Annie Drew, OH (left-handed) Purdue, great hitter from all over the court. Both teams can put up big blocks. Match even, two sets apiece. Fun match.
Nebraska swept Northwestern…
The #1 thing will be to obviously win, both at home and on the road, but as the season is progressing and players are fatiguing and getting nagging injuries it would behoove them to not rest their players as much as they possibly can. Especially against the lower tier teams, there is no reason to overplay our starters deep into the third game. Let the bench play. Nikki needs rest. You can see it. She is hurting and I’m just really nervous about her staying healthy.
