Tuning up for a road trip

After completing today’s 85-minute practice, the Warriors appear to be at full availability for Saturday’s road game against Boise State.

Keelan Ewaliko, who missed the Wisconsin game because of a family death, was back returning kickoffs.

The Warriors are not expected to make any significant lineup changes. Safety Damien Packer worked as a nickelback with the No. 1 defense. Safety Daniel Lewis and cornerback Ne’Quan Phillips, who was held out of last week’s game to rest an ailment, also can play nickelback.

The Warriors practice tomorrow morning, then depart in the afternoon for the mainland.

My condolences to you and family, Mr. Ewaliko! 🙁 🙁 🙁 Geez, that’s rough! :/

ST, Does “full availability” mean all the injured/concussed players at Wisconsin will be traveling to BSU?

  6. Maddog50 September 30, 2015 11:48 am

    Violating my own law here
Calling everyone on this board delusional is both insulting and counterproductive
I have no feelings so I myself can not be insulted-
Don’t know if I’m talking to one guy or two but-
If you yourself want to be a winner then be one-according to others I reside in that camp and have for an awfully long time-try it, it takes a lot of work and dedication and I might add single mindedness-I have a surplus of that
This team these coaches and players will represent the fans and the State of Hawaii very well this week-end and play a good if not great game-no disregard that I am having one of my moments!!!! Go Warrrrrrrriiiiiiooooorrrrrrs!

    Maddog50:

Did you and friends drive to Madison for the game?

I posted an email from Madison, noticed it was being moderated, then it disappeared – how rude!!!

    We were at the Holiday Inn close to the campus – very nice accommodations.;

Midori and MasaBoy wanted a picture of the “wall of fame” with JJ Watts photo – apparently a very special wall for walk-ons who earned scholarships – unfortunately all the workers at Camp Randle Stadium had no idea what we were asking about.

Our pre-game meal was a Chinese restaurant with excellent and tasty food for being in Madison – cost was $12 for the buffet, a drink, and tip! All the wait staff were brought over from a small town west of Shanghai

staying with the football theme – I am reminded about the movie Mr. Holland’s Opus where the football coach asks Holland to take in and teach his star player to play an instrument – pre-req for high school graduation – during a conversation between them, Holland, the band teacher, tells the coach about his difficulty in teaching the player to play the drum and the possibility of a failing grade – coach then remarks – it’s not the student that failed, it was the teacher who failed to teach.

same principle can be applied to football or any other sport – why did #50 lose his cool and smash the Wisconsin player after the ball was whistled dead? one can teach principle(s); not situations. Principles never change, situations change rapidly.

    On to Boise!!!!!

  8. Tanman September 30, 2015 1:48 pm

    A miracle at Boise?

  9. cocobean September 30, 2015 1:48 pm

Delusional? Delusional is when you’re a DII school flying 3000 miles to Seattle to play the Huskies and believing you’re going to win the game.

  10. nutmegger September 30, 2015 2:01 pm

It may not be realistic or “delusional” to believe UH will beat BSU, but to think otherwise is defeatism.

  11. hitmanhart September 30, 2015 2:05 pm

ST who is the best blocking running back we have on the team? are we taking 4 qbs on this road trip again? and more question might sound dum but did coach ever think of call a game from UH press booth? since he did so good from there in the past !

  12. SteveM September 30, 2015 2:08 pm

    Re: #7
A-House — you did not post or email me that you would be going to Wisconsin too so I assumed you wanted to keep it secret this time. This is the purpose of the Tsai-ko Away Game Logistics and party planner:
    http://stevem.altervista.org/away15.html

In larger groups with “new” people, I send a group email to the known attendees a week before the game (if I have their addys) so they may optionally contact any or all for planning purposes.

So, if anyone is going to a UH football road game this year–and not going in secret– let me know. Especially for Vegas.

    31-30…..

  16. H-Man September 30, 2015 3:14 pm

Until the coaching staff can show they can establish an effective running game, my prediction is:

    Boise 38, Hawaii 13

Too much is being put on Max when the offense has become a one-dimensional passing team. Defense on the field way too much.

  17. DaveLetterMan September 30, 2015 3:53 pm

    Afternoon Tsaikos!
    We’ll be 3-2 after beating Boise 31 – 28
    Go Warriors!

  18. mytake September 30, 2015 4:04 pm

Who’s this? A football team that has a pretty good D. The best player on the team is an undersized D lineman. The Offense is struggling with no running game, receivers dropping passes and, a young suspect O-line. I’m talking about my St Louis Rams. I’m getting punished twice a week.

  19. georgiane September 30, 2015 4:47 pm

Does it seem like for the past 2 years, boise has had a soft schedule? so, it’s pretty easy for them to win all their games or at least enuf to get into a bowl game. do you think they could have beaten ohio state or Wisconsin? until they play those types of teams, I’m not that impressed. seems like every team goes in there already scared. just my opinion.

I think Inside Access should concentrate on UH football. I miss Steven’s interviews and funny things. Don’t like that new guy

  20. cocobean September 30, 2015 4:49 pm

#16. I’m in total agreement. The running game has got to get going for this offense to work. Ours is not a spread option where the QB is a threat to run or pass. By design we’re an up tempo spread based on play action. A good running game makes the play action more effective and let’s us up the tempo even more. If the running game is not clicking then the play action is more of a hindrance when passing because of the extra time it takes to fake the hand off, get set to throw and go through progressions.

We’re not designed to be a pass first team which is what we’ve been forced to do. hope the coaches have drawn up some draws and delay runs should we be forced to play catch up. These are running plays all pass first teams have. So far I don’t recall us running any Alex Green type draws and delays this year.

  21. H-Man September 30, 2015 5:52 pm

cocobean, wow, I could never have come up with that insight/analysis, but I love it. From the few practices that I attended, I like Kaiwi Chung to be that power back. I know some/most will say other backs like Steven Lakalaka and Mel Davis, but Kaiwi really attacks the line and shows good quickness for a big guy (6-0/240). The coaches can design plays to put Paul Harris and Diocemy St Juste outside to stretch the defense horizontally.

  22. Tempmanoa September 30, 2015 5:53 pm

Our running game is even worse than our passing game when you compare to other Mountain West teams and compare just for games vs FCS teams, and just for games just for AP 25 teams so we compare apples to apples. SJSU, Nevada, and UNLV have put together strong passing and running offenses. I think we were designed as a pass first team and if you count sacks as pass attempts, we have passed more than run. But it has not worked for a number of reasons. If we want to run more, we need to bring back the read option (with Woolsey) or add more running plays off passing formations and maybe add some running formations like we had last year. Or we need to pass better and set up the run.

  23. oldtimer808 September 30, 2015 6:23 pm

Cocobean if you are a supporter of the UH program, there is nothing wrong in providing good positive vibes to our team. To only think in negatives terms towards the program does not help the program to grow. I think all of us dellusional supporters only want the best for the program win or lose. University of Hawaii athletics is the program I love and support. I know realistically our program struggles but mean spirited opinions will not make our program any better. If you have ever been part of an athletic program, you wil know the sacrifices our student/athletes make to achieve difficult goals. The greatest achievements our student/athletes can make is to graduate with a college diploma and become productive citizens.

  24. cocobean September 30, 2015 7:23 pm

oldtimer808. I’m an oldtimer also. Sorry you mistook my delusional post.
I was being sarcastic to the poster who said bloggers here are delusional and was trying to be supportive of maddog50 who was on our DII team that went up to Seattle and beat UDUB when the Huskies were 40 pts + favorites.

oldtimer 808. Sorry if misunderstood my delusional post. I’m an oldtimer too.

I was being sarcastic to the comment that posters here were delusional. I posted in support of maddog50 who was on the Rainbow team in ’72 that went up to Seattle and beat the 40 pts + favorites Huskies. The reality is we’re a big underdog to Boise but is it delusional for the team and their fans to believe they have a chance to win. I don’tthink so.

BTW. My first response to you, which, was similar to this one didn’t pass moderation.

  28. Come on, Man! September 30, 2015 8:49 pm

maddog: check your reading skills, bro. I never said EVERYBODY on this board is delusional. it was also tongue in cheek. just let it go.

  29. Come on, Man! September 30, 2015 9:03 pm

although for real, though. you can be a fan and still be realistic and unhappy with the direction the team is going. being a fan doesn’t necessarily mean saying that EVERY game UH plays, they will win 90-0, because good vibes.

that’s a little out of control and not based in reality.

It’s the process of the game and how it’s played that’s almost as important as the final score. Is the team putting a good product on the field that is consistent and exciting to watch? Of course, UH isn’t going to beat ohio state or wisconsin. at least, the odds are really low that that would happen. but is there a good product on the field, are they executing, is there a chance to root behind them?

in general, for the last four years of the norm chow trainwreck, i would say no. And ticket sales would support that.

  30. cocobean September 30, 2015 9:21 pm

#22. I’ve been trying to respond to you but my posts have not passed moderation.
I was posting I’m sorry you misunderstood the point I was trying to make. I was being supportive of maddog50 who is relentlessly positive our team can triumph over all odds.

Maddog50 was on the ’72 team that beat the 40+ points favorite UDUB in Seattle. I can see where he’s coming from. The reality is we’re big underdogs to Boise but is it delusional for the team and it’s supporter to think they have a chance to win. I don’t think so.

  31. cocobean September 30, 2015 9:23 pm

Yep drove to Madison stayed at the Crown Plaza and took a cab to and from the game

  37. Maddog50 October 1, 2015 3:28 am

Hey Cocobean I remember that little excursion to Seattle. Almost did not make it back on time! Was out all night having fun after the game with a teammate and his brother. Fortunately I was also with a young position coach…Bill Redding. We got to the hotel when the team was boarding the bus to the airport! Nobody said anything because I was with my coach-do not think that would work in today’s world for either of us. I did not feel to good on the flight back. Just thinking about it makes my head hurt-

  38. Maddog50 October 1, 2015 3:36 am

A House, went to the Red Zone for some brews with a former teammate John Arnold and his family. Headed up to “Badgerville” to meet Tim Feigh another former teammate and with Joyce from Na Koa…..saw Stephen there along with Dave Reardon and met lots of folks including some players parents including the Woolsey’s. Sorry we do not meet up but will be in NM with about 20 or so mature Warriors from the late,60’s and early 70’s. Also be in Vegas thanks to Tom K’s effort We will sit with the traveling band of about 300 or so in that group. Looking forward to a great effort this week and beyond! Go Warriors!!!!

  39. cappie the dog October 1, 2015 4:21 am

I think “The Dan LeBatard Show” is modeled after David Letterman’s gig at NBC. To use a big word, LeBatard, like Dave, is deconstructing the old model of what is expected out of the genre.

It’s worth getting up at 4 in the morning for, but I still wish Cowherd was on ESPN.

On days I worked, nobody kept me awake better than Cowherd.

    But, I digress.

I meant to predict the Hawaii/Boise State outcome, but LeBatard was cracking me up about how nobody cares what the Packers’ back-up has to say.

As a minor 49ers fan, I would rather see Scott Tolzein out there this upcoming Sunday over Kaepernick.

    Hawaii 27
    Boise State 24

  40. What??? October 1, 2015 8:13 am

    Good Morning!
Told someone that today and darn near got my head bit off. That was my point all along, not everyone is delusional but somewhere, someone will think you are. Sorry, I did not mean to get people in an uproar, just wanted to ridicule someone who did write that about another post.

  41. cocobean October 1, 2015 8:36 am

oldtimer808. I think you misunderstood my delusional post. I was supporting maddog50’s point of view. He was on that 72′ Rainbows team that were 40+ points underdogs that beat the Huskies in Seattle.
The reality is we’ve never won in Boise and we’re a big underdog this year. But is it delusional for our coaches, players and fans to think they can and will win. I don’t think so.
