No rest for the Warriors

After today’s 65-minute practice, the Warriors prepared for their second road trip in as many weeks. They were scheduled to depart this afternoon.

The Warriors are following what has become a trend in college football. For a Saturday game, they have a light practice on Thursday, then a modified practice on Friday. In the past, the Warriors would have only a walk-through session on Friday.

By returning to Honolulu between road games, the Warriors were able to attend classes and practice against full scout teams. If they had remained on the mainland, they would have had to use second-team players serve as scouts. For this trip, two academic counselors are on the travel squad.

Sure you can go to classes and play with a full scout team, but the body has a hard time adjusting to all the travel to all the time zones within the past month. Jet lag is going to affect the team when they play Boise. Smart administrators.

  10. Inyoface October 1, 2015 12:01 pm

    #7 Those shirts were dumb

  11. seewhy October 1, 2015 12:06 pm

    RE: #7 nutmegger

No wear those shirts unless you can beat ’em. Otherwise you just look like one lolo.

  12. H-Man October 1, 2015 12:09 pm

Agree. All the traveling hurts more than if they had stayed on the mainland. But I easily understand that class time is important. Plus, it feels good to sleep in your own bed after a few days in a hotel. Aaaaahh, maybe it’s a wash. Have a good game. Go Warriors !!!

  13. st. anthony trojan October 1, 2015 12:29 pm

Agree # 9….better to stay there…save sum kala….get acclimated 2 the weather…plus 12 hours on the plane…maybe 12 hours getting ready or at the airport…equals a full day…plus the experience of riding a bus…or even a train…would be fun for sum of the warriors…

Me guess the administrators must be ‘delusional’ to think…that all that travel…over all them time zones…n altitude…n stress on the body…plus having to do battle with an opponent over 60 minutes…is not going to have a toll n manifest itself in ‘performance’ on the field of play Saturday…

  14. SteveM October 1, 2015 12:39 pm

    RE: #12
H-Man — I tend to agree its wash. The tipping point is probably expense of staying on the road. Gotta consider its not just 66 player plus coaches walking around with hand-carry luggage. There is a lot of equipment, uniforms, etc. to clean and get from point A to B, all food from 3rd parties, lodging costs, daily buses, “educational excursions”, etc.

I recall that in the JJ and Mack years, we almost always lost the 2nd game when we stayed on the mainland. The last I remember is the 2011 UNLV game, which we surprisingly lost. So, there is not much evidence that staying on the mainland between games will equate to wins. Probably only ST, who stayed with the teams on the road, can give a credible opinion on this…

    14.

yeah staying on the road for that long can take its toll. I think some people forget how beneficial it can be to the body and mind to have a few days when going back to sleep in your own bed. Let’s also not forget these are student athletes with of course the student aspect coming first. I understand they have tutors and other academic staff that come on the trip, but there’s a big difference in being in being in class vs not.

Not convinced norm knows how to win and to produce a winning season and program. So more productive and more fun to look forward to the future. Look for a good HC replacement for norm, rather than talk about how this season will end. We all know how this season will end. See all previous seasons under norm.

Would like to see someone no older than 40, two to three years experience as assistant at D1 school, or see UH take a chance on a high school coach from Hawaii who developed a winning program and who has the right attitude. Have always believed in Cal Lee, but his time has come and gone. Still hoping Miano will be selected, even if he is older than 40. Impressed with what he did as HC at Kaiser. Says a lot.

  26. st. anthony trojan October 1, 2015 3:57 pm

Me think the defense will be exposed n show sum weakness with this team…

They are unpredictable n score from long range….compared to OSU n Badgers…

Lots of travel n messed up schedule week does not help…

    Hope for the best…

As for Ewaliko…he was the state sprint champ few years back…n QB a team that beat FARRINGTON…in playoffs…Randall Okimoto seemed to like him…but guess for sum on here…he is not ‘bright’ enough…still have to learn his plays… to one on here… yet coach admits…after 2 years…not sure yet where to play him…

But agree… even a HS coach with motivational qualities are ok…n will do fine…if he keeps some of the experienced staff on board…he could have kept some of Macs staff…for continuity…instead of grad assts…n make sure he is not a screamer….
he he he….wonder if York n Miano would be a good team…
    LIKE PERRY N PRICE…???

I hope AD Matlin is also thinking about a mascot for UH. I vote for the retro menehune, but a warrior would be great. Maybe UH could work with Underarmour. Probably best we didn’t end up with the last AD picking … the Fighting Ibises just doesn’t work for me.

Ewaliko’s got speed and speed kills, too bad the coaches are too blind to see it. His talent is being wasted on the sidelines. Recruited for his speed, but being used only on special teams??? He makes big plays and gets the momentum going, as everyone can see. Clearly are we watching the same game???

  33. Dennis Haloran October 1, 2015 5:56 pm

That loss to UNLV after beating WSU in Seattle was a real head scratcher during the McMackin regime.

  36. z October 1, 2015 6:02 pm

I like Ewaliko. He is one player who has made the most of what ever little playing time he has received. Just wondering what would happen if he got more time?

  37. st. anthony trojan October 1, 2015 6:17 pm

If Sanchez is used more then 4 or 5 times in first half…we be in very big trouble….

  44. oneseason October 1, 2015 8:24 pm

#37 … that would be cheating in a way not sanctioned by the MWC 🙂 … Boise State was in their non-cheating uniforms against Virginia. Hopefully they will not be using the blue uniforms with blue field when they host Hawaii.

  46. amela October 1, 2015 8:29 pm

If all the comments about traveling is negative then maybe it’s not coaches or players fault for not playing their best or winning.

  47. H-Man October 1, 2015 8:48 pm

Yeah, that 33-34 loss to UNLV in 2009 was a heart breaker, but when looking at the record book, it doesn’t seem so unusual. There was a stretch of 7 games beginning with the WSC game where 5 games were on the road. In that stretch Hawaii went 1-6, so the loss to UNLV was not so unusual. The road took its toll on Hawaii in 2009.

  48. wow October 1, 2015 9:21 pm

#32, yes speed is all he needs. Don’t need to learn the plays. Don’t need to make better decisions. i.e. Returning a kickoff that is five yards deep in the end zone than fumbling the ball. Think about why he is only playing on special teams. Clearly are we watching the same game?????????????

ps – I have more questions marks than you

  49. st. anthony trojan October 1, 2015 10:25 pm

One fumble does not a football player make or not make…seems like he was trying to make sumthing good happen n generate sum much needed excitement for his team…Did he not run one back earlier or later for a TD…that was called back..,,

Me remember another dude…that played at Aloha stadium…went to the NFL…WAS CUT…cuz he could not handle punts…n fumbled a lot…went up north n plays for Toronto.. n led the league in total yards a few years ago…me hear he is on tv there sum times…for a storage company…hard to judge just a few games…sumtimes one tries to hard n messes up…till they learn to relax…seems to me there was another dude from Hilo…in the cardinals line-up now…was sort of a let down when he first started…but they had faith in him… n he has learned to relax…n even named the national league rookie of the month… lesson is…relax…n just play full tilt…the good stuff will come..,unless of course ur a Run…Run…Pass…Punt football coach he he he

  50. clyde October 1, 2015 10:36 pm

I never understood why Ewaliko was never considered as a running back. He was, essentially, a running QB at Baldwin. It was interesting to read a comment by Bailey a couple weeks ago that he very well might move him there. Then again, it would be his third position at UH.
BTW: I like Ewaliko’s play on special teams, especially on kick coverage.
Speaking of special teams … did anyone notice Tuimaseali’i on the punt return team at Wisconsin? Hopefully, he was only in there because it was a road game.

  52. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 2, 2015 9:23 am

    wow,

nope. you aren’t watching the same Hawaii games if you don’t see the value in Ewaliko getting more game time. It’s ok, with all the games available on TV and the net these days, it’s easy to get confused.

I think Ewaliko has value, but one has to wonder why he doesn’t play more often. I did catch an episode of Inside Access and the special teams coach said he wasn’t supposed to return the kickoff that he fumbled. Maybe he needs for discipline on the football field?

  55. islandman October 2, 2015 10:52 am

Ewaliko was at running back for awhile, i think in his first year at UH, before he redshirted that year.

  56. islandman October 2, 2015 10:54 am

Ewaliko was at running back for awhile, i think in his first year at UH, before he redshirted that year, in 2013.

  57. oneseason October 2, 2015 12:20 pm

#50 … so much is confusing. Earlier in the week, one of the 1420 hosts said that Coach Chow had made lots of money in his career and was more concerned with making sure he got wins so his coaching staff could keep their jobs. And yet Coach Chow has fired a boat load of coaches in the last 3+ years. But counting wins and losses is pretty simple, so I hope not to be too confused at the end of the season. I just hope good players are getting a fair chance both to be coached well and to play.
