Team has the NCAA-mandated day off today so I’m taking one as well.
Wanted to carry over a discussion from last thread regarding the comment about the “set”
by Higgins that went over for a kill. as someone said, she wouldn’t get away with that against other teams.
And the other comment: “higgins setting that ball on the other side of the net sure was hehehaha funny. what is that? an ‘assist kill’ or a set kill? then again higgins and/or shoji might have done and engineered that respectively by design and must of fooled everyone!”
IF you are going to make a comment, especially one that tends to be derisive, suggest checking the facts first.
As I tried to explain last night, there was NO set. Higgins, as a back-row player in the front row never touched the ball. The dig from Manu-Olevao was going over. Higgins saw that and turned around, put up her hands as if to set but didn’t jump. the ball went over her head and the net for a point. CSUB apparently forgot she was a back-row player, something you often hear called out as “back row setter” before a serve. If she had made an attempt would have likely been called for a back-row attack or block if she had tried to do anything. it was very tight to the net. IMHO thought it was a smart play on her part.

Just watched the match courtesy of our friend on YouTube. Yeah, Taylor did a great job faking them out. So very impressed with her serving (.35 (SA/S), 3rd in the conference. Had not realize what a big part Taylor plays in our floor defense with 2.3 digs per set, 3rd on team behind Nikki (2.4) and Savannah (3.67).
To me, most important thing is that a starting lineup for the season opener needs to be solidified. UCSB is just getting back their freshman stud HS AA Lindsey Ruddins and CalPoly is playing well with super freshmen, 3X BWC Freshman of the week, Adlee Van Winden. Should be challenging and fun.

I think (not 100% sure as my interest in Friday’s game was half hearted at best) that the “set” in question was a Higgin’s set to the left side that drifted so close to the net it actually went over the net (not sure if it landed in or out).
I clearly remembered that TMO pass that landed for a kill near the front middle and thinking most other teams would have killed that ball.
Kendra in the last set had a set that look like it was meant for Hawaii’s left side hitter, but instead went over the net to CSUB’s right side hitter. CSUB wasn’t ready for it and instead of smacking it over the net, popped it back up.
Both setters have their what the heck moments, and both have their strengths. They seem to complement and support each other pretty well. Don’t think it’s important which one of them gets the most court time at this point, just keep the hot hand out there and let Kendra rotate through the front row when they need the bigger block and someone to handle the errant overpasses, and Tayler through the back row when they need the serving and back row defense. Setting the middles doesn’t appear to be a big issue anymore, for either of them, thankfully, finally.
It’s a luxury to have two setters who can rescue each other, and both cable of performing at a high level. They just need to be rotated in and out correctly, which is the coach’s responsibility. Would hope to see both of them be appreciated by the fans for their respective strengths, and not over criticized or over praised; ride the coach if you don’t like how they are being used (he can take it).
Has Shoji named Nikki’s backup? Is it Castillo? I know that Mitchem played all rotations at IVC, but I wonder how she would do at this level? How’s her passing? If she plays behind Nikki, she would see less court time than she does now.
Aware that players were sick and did not practice. Just wondering if any of the starters were also sick. Seems only the reserves were, hence, their limited time on the court.
Would have loved to see more of Kendra, Mitchell and Casey, believe, they too need game experience to provide depth down the roads. At the same time understand that if they were under the weather, it was good to rest ‘um.
Maybe Sunday…we’ll see more of them sharing time playing.
#4 Totally agree. Since both struggle and have certain weakness, the chemistry and support between the two setters are critical to long term success. Hope they continue to growth together for the good of the team. And Maverick, thanks for the correction – sorry Tayler.
so it was by design with tayler after all. she did a ‘feint assist/set’ kill. tai gets the actual credit for the kill but tayler sure fooled bakersfield! and shoji must be beaming he engineered part of this. tayler must of thought hehe im slick.
they also talked about how theres a punahou alumnae in each class with claire marie anderson on the post game show. shojis got a monopoly of buffnblu. (come again? partial to punahou eh volleytalkers?)

I think Punahou has a lot of talent. Prior to recent years, there were a lot of HBA graduates. Like other sports, talent among the schools ebb and flow. MPI has a few on softball now, and baseball. I don’t think coaches would recruit from specific high schools, it wouldn’t be helping their teams any.

#11. Yes, verbally committed to Pepperdine & Punahou alum Scott Wong. So, the critics who complain about Coach Shoji favoring the “Punahou connection” can stop complaining. They will now head to Pepperdine.
Mentioned before, but…. Scott Wong starts 3 true freshmen, 2 OH and a middle. None of this because they’re freshmen, but they are the best players in their positions.

5. i think with the illnesses, he is looking at a number of people to back up Taylor on the right. Has said that he will look at all outside hitter. Castillo seems the most logical. but that is not counting out Mitchem, he said, which would give him a pretty impressive front line in some rotations. Mitchem has not played RS but can hit from all six rotations.
don’t get this punahou thing. sometimes the players stay at hawaii. sometimes they go away. why people think that suddenly Wong will take all the best Punahou players is beyond me.although he has a connection since he was recruiting for UH until recently.
Anderson had a chance to play for Pepperdine BEFORE Wong go the job. it is where he dad played. The family decided they couldn’t afford it as a walk-on and she stayed at Hawaii where she has academic financial help.

I hope we get to see Mitchem on the outside, at least as an experiment. At 6’3″ with a heavy arm (and a good blocker), she could be another weapon that could help when Tai and Greeley are struggling. I also think Maglio continues to improve game by game, and I’d hate to have either Mitchem or Maglio sit on the bench as they spit the MH position.
Wow even UC Irvine beats 21st ranked San Diego in 4 sets tonite right after Long Beach St beat them in 5sets last night. ..The BIG West will not be a cake walk….UC Santa Barbara loses to San Diego St.in straight sets. That’s a little bit of a surprise, but great for Diedre Collins… (Yes!)
#21 Yeah, watched the Beach game against the Beavers, and Oregon just looked terrible. Beach is gelling with a lot of off speed placement shots and dinks that were really effective. Anteaters are surprising everyone with freshman Opp Harlee Kekauoha killing it and believe their big gun Barbosa may still be out with injury. Don’t know what is happening with Gaucho as I thought with their supper frosh Lindsey Ruddins coming in back from injury, that they would really be smoking.
