Columbus day

Columbus, Ohio — One hour here, no sign of King James (although he is supposed to be attending Saturday’s game).

We’ll post pictures (hopefully) as we tour Columbus today. (“Ferd” and photographer Jamm arrived yesterday, and already have posted stories and pictures on the Star-Advertiser site.)

The Warriors are scheduled to arrive at 8 p.m EDT (that’s 2 p.m. in Hawaii).

Our good friend, Stretch, will be touring the Hall of Fame today.

How many Hawaii fans are expected to attend the game?

  2. Maddog50 September 10, 2015 3:45 am

Remember when we played Tennessee 72. Flight to San Fancisco, wait, flight to St Louis practice in the middle of the night there got kicked out for disturbing the neighborhood! Stayed that night in St Louis got little sleep then on to Knoxville. Same drill going back. What a memory-the only time we went past the west coast because we only played two away games all 4 years! Play solid football stay resilient and together and improve over last week and everything will be okay! GO WARRRRIORS!!!!

Maddog50 – “Play solid football stay resilient and together and improve over last week and everything will be okay! GO WARRRRIORS!!!!”

Perfect. Leave it all out on the field. No injuries! This game will make us a better team down the road.

  4. Da Punchbowl Kid September 10, 2015 3:54 am

    I. Believe.

  5. tom-warriornation September 10, 2015 4:12 am

    WE BELIEVE!
    GO WARRIORS!
The entire Warrior Nation all over the world will be cheering you on!

  6. H-Man September 10, 2015 4:37 am

Go Warriors !!! Have fun !!!

  7. UpIrons September 10, 2015 4:50 am

I may just have to greet the Warriors at the airport. This is a game for the ages and I believe they have what it takes!

  8. UHfan808 September 10, 2015 6:14 am

    Good morning, Tsai-kos!!! 🙂

    The Warriors have landed!

  9. UHfan808 September 10, 2015 6:15 am

Geez, hope you can get a bit more sleep, ST!

  10. UHfan808 September 10, 2015 6:21 am

    1 Maddog50:

Whoa what a trip and back, huh..?

    Good advice!

Just play to play and play as a team!

  11. Old School Dave September 10, 2015 6:22 am

MadDog50: I watched that game in black and white (?) in 72. I can still see Albert Holmes running through the Tennessee defense, weighing something like 165 lbs. UH was outmatched (basically a Div-II team vs a SEC team), but played a spirited game. Joe Moore who covered the game, got into a fight with a Vol fan at a restaurant and got a shinner.

    GO WARRIORS!!

  12. UHfan808 September 10, 2015 6:22 am

    Have a nice day everyone!

  13. Maddog50 September 10, 2015 6:38 am

I remember Joe Moore having a black eye and there were stories. The funniest thing was in St. Louis the bus driver was lost getting us to a high school field to practice. I would say we were 90 minutes late. Practicing practically in the dark. Snow flurries caused the local guys to go nuts hollering and screaming and having fun never having seen snow! ..the neighbors called the cops and we had to leave the field it was around 3am. Had A teammate who was really good….suffered from some anxiety disorder that when in front of a large crowd just would have a panic attack and refused to play in front of 60k fans……what an experience. Any way will be all packed for the game and leave for the 5 hr trip tomorrow. Lotsa interest here in Chicago particularly among my friends and associates. Let’s sell the brand on the field!!! GO WARRRRIORS!!!!!

  14. A-House September 10, 2015 7:02 am

    Maddog50:

safe trip to Columbus! hope to see/meet you at the UH tailgate.

I remember the 1960 game at Tennessee – score was like 66 – 0 football dorm mates were teasing Tom Price for crying so much in the locker room after the game

remember also certain UH poly players were asked to seat in the back of the bus – their explanation of being Poly was not accepted – they were dark and had curly hair

  15. A-House September 10, 2015 7:07 am

Warrior Dave, 3Prong, Lakeside GT, Alanbama, Stretch:

hey guys! see you at the hotel tomorrow!

if our rooms are not ready, plan to visit a nearby casino to collect the$1 and $5 coin or chips – play some – eat some!!! 15 minutes by taxi from Crowne Plaza

  16. Maddog50 September 10, 2015 7:31 am

I will most certainly be at the “rally” on Saturday they just emailed the tickets. I too am staying at the Crowne Plaza. Meeting a few former players for dinner and will have two of my sons and son in law along to witness my antics!!!!

  17. Tempmanoa September 10, 2015 7:34 am

Warriors do not land until 8 PM ET (2 PM HST) today per Tsai. What was their itinerary? May have seen it but forgot. They must have stopped somewhere to rest and practice/meet? Where was it?

  18. Ipu Man September 10, 2015 7:39 am

    Nice pics, Tsai.
Question, is the stadium turf real grass?

  19. Stephen Tsai September 10, 2015 7:46 am

It’s FieldTurf. I know this because I have granules in my shoes.

  20. tom September 10, 2015 8:00 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

I remember I was driving on Nimitz by the Pineapple Factory when the radio announced the UH-Nebraska game as 6-0!!!!

Hoping to hear something like that on Saturday against OSU.

  21. UpIrons September 10, 2015 8:41 am

Urban has a lot of good things to say about the Warriors here:

    http://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2015/09/59268/urban-meyer-coachs-show-ohio-states-nasty-offensive-line-why-cardale-started-against

  22. Stephen Tsai September 10, 2015 8:54 am

    Tom:
    Let’s see, the Nebraska-Hawaii game was played 60 years ago, and you can’t get a license until you’re 15 … hmm, carry the 5 … you’re in your mid-70s?!?

  23. Stephen Tsai September 10, 2015 8:58 am

We’ve been informed the Warriors are now at LAX.
That gives me a few hours to nap.

  24. tom September 10, 2015 9:09 am

    Stephen:

When I go down to the beach and see the slim ones in bikinis, I keep saying : “oh, if I were only in my mid-70s again!”

  25. H-Man September 10, 2015 9:37 am

Those of you that don’t like the retro-Rainbow are in for a big surprise. Check out Hawaii Athletics website to see the new white road uniforms sporting the Rainbow on the white helmet, on the shoulder and along the pants.

  26. NotNasti September 10, 2015 9:47 am

Kinda digging the the retro unis. Time for a change.

  27. NotNasti September 10, 2015 9:48 am

I wasn’t in favor of going back to Rainbow Warriors, but if that’s what we’re going to be, we might as well incorporate the “rainbow” back into our unis.

  28. oldtimer808 September 10, 2015 9:53 am

Anthing is possible. It was 1955 when the University of Hawaii football team arrived in Lincoln, Nebraska for the first game of the season after a pounding by Nebraska at the Honolulu Stadium in 1954 by a score of 50 to 0. 28 players made the long journey to Nebraska as a 40 point underdog. No one gave UH a chance. Miracles do happen as Nebraska got only as close as to the 13 yard line and never scored. Hawaii 6 Nebraska 0. Yes anthing is possible GO RAINBOW WARRIORS GO FOR BROKE. ST pass this on to the team.

  29. tom September 10, 2015 10:00 am

    Stephen: re: 22

Forgot to add: I got my BA from UH in 1954 and was in the service when we beat Nebraska.

  30. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 10, 2015 10:08 am

The road jerseys look siiiiiick! Can’t wait to see it on the field and in action.

  32. RB September 10, 2015 10:36 am

If Hawaii wants to go back to the retro uni’s then why not the one’s the wore the year of the Holiday Bowl? But IMO UH needs to leave the retro uniforms alone already!!!!

  33. HawaiiMongoose September 10, 2015 10:56 am

I’m not a fan of the retro rainbow unis. Branding is a tricky thing. We’ve worked for years to establish the Warrior image nationally, with the aggressive-looking “H” logo (which is often cited on lists of the best college athletic logos), Polynesian motifs, and dark green and black as foundation uniform colors with white/gray/silver accents. Now we’re stepping onto one of the largest stages in all of college football and instead of continuing to build our brand we’re decked out in kelly green and rainbows. This comes across to me as gimmicky and confuses the picture of who we are. I’m sure others will disagree but that’s my take.

P.S. I’m glad to see the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team building on our current brand instead of trying to recapture the spirit of the ’80s. I think their new ASICS uniforms are pretty “sick” and exemplify the direction all UH teams should be moving.

  34. 808warriorfan September 10, 2015 10:56 am

Uniform for the game ….. all white retro …

    http://footballscoop.com/news/hawaii-breaking-out-awesome-all-white-retros-for-ohio-state-on-saturday/

  35. cocobean September 10, 2015 11:00 am

Caught Inside Access the other night. Kekaula was saying OSU may be the best team UH has ever faced. Another team mention was USC 2005 when they had Reggie Bush. I was surprised no one mentioned Nebraska in 1971. Nebraska won the national championship in 1970 and was undefeated coming into their last game 0f 71′ at the old Honolulu Stadium. In 71′ we were still an independent DII school playing against the defending national champion trying to cap their 2nd in a row undefeated season. I sure the odds of the Rainbows beating the Huskers back then were greater than the odds of the Warriors beating the Bucs on Saturday.

  36. Maddog50 September 10, 2015 11:06 am

Cocobean it was 18-3 at half final 45-3. Johnny Rogers all they way. I had a lot of fun against Rich Glover!!! Not so much!!! Hey we line up and play right—-Go Warrrrrriors!!!

  37. SteveM September 10, 2015 11:16 am

    Good morning everyone!

    RE: #31 & 34
    That’s a road game/visiting team uniform? Cool!
Looks more distinctive and “colorful” than most home team uniforms. I like the rainbow piping on the legs.

  38. cocobean September 10, 2015 11:37 am

Maddog50. You played in that game? Wow! For you is it memories of a lifetime or a recurring nightmare. As a fan I was there but don’t remember too much about what happened. The only thing I remember is the “sea of red” that filled the makai stands. There were thousands of red shirts walking around Waikiki and Ala Moana Shopping Center a few days before and after the game. Talk about a team’s fan base that travels well.

  39. Maddog50 September 10, 2015 12:24 pm

Coco bean I was a sophomore and split time by quarter with a senior. Got called for three illegal procedures as,a center. Still get crap over this! Always been on the exciteable side. I have lots of memories of that game. Can’t find my car keys in the morning but former teammates most games and a lot of practices are clear as if yesterday. Hey let’s go play these guys and see what happens!

  40. jm2375 September 10, 2015 12:43 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!

First of all, congratulations to Joshua Walker, one of my favorite UH MVB players, on being named UH MVB Asst Coach! Looking forward to next season!

Best wishes to the FB Warriors! Play hard and smart!

BTW, is there some legitimate reason for watering ARTIFICIAL turf????

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

  41. amela September 10, 2015 12:46 pm

I remember seeing all the Penn State coaches whooping it up as the fax for recruits kept coming in. A lot of 4 stars some 5 stars and so on. Well they sucked in the first week losing to Temple. Talk about coaches who need to be fired. What a waste of talent. Kind of like Texas Tech.

  42. Derek September 10, 2015 12:58 pm

They can look good and they can feel good in their unis. That doesn’t change the score on the score board. I feel like Ohio St. playing Hawaii at their place is like Mililani or Kahuku playing McKinley, same kind of score. Mililani 73, McKinley 14. Kahuku 70, McKinley 0. Urban Meyer, in my opinion, is the best college head coach, better than Nick Saban. Braxton Miller to me was the best player in the first week of the football season. Joey Bosa just might be the #1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft in April. Cardale Jones is so big he can get 4 yards per rush just falling forward. Not to mention all those 4 and 5 star players all over the place. Tomey said it’s best “it’s just like comparing apples to oranges”.

But, one positive thing. UH men’s volleyball team did beat Ohio State, maybe even more than once. The key for UH is not turning the ball over. If so, we’ll keep the score in the 40’s. Turn it over 3 or 4 times and we are looking at a score in the 70s for the Buckeyes. Going on the road, I would think we would have a bunch of penalties and make more mistakes than normal with 100,000+ fans in the stadium. It’s just daunting. Yeah, we hope it’s a good game, but when reality sinks in, we can be thankful for the experience and the $1.2 check for being a cupcake. Thank you Ben Jay!!!! Ditto for Wisconsin in 2 weeks!

  43. WarriorNY September 10, 2015 1:10 pm

    Interesting from Urban Meyer…

On Hawai’i: Noted they’re on a 10-day prep, compared to Ohio State’s four-day prep. “Very Baylor-like offense. If you’re screwing around, they can hurt you.” They have a strong-armed QB and two receivers who “could play anywhere in the country.”

“This is where Ed Warinner earns his keep.” Noted they trained hard for Virginia Tech and the Bear defense, but Hawai’i’s 3-4 defense will bring different exotic looks.”

  44. NotNasti September 10, 2015 1:37 pm

jm2375: From what I remember, when you add pellets and/or sweep the turf, watering it will help to “settle” the pellets into the turf, much like adding sand or topsoil to natural grass.

  45. NotNasti September 10, 2015 1:39 pm

Although, I’m sure Michigan fans would look at that picture and say, “Buckeyes are soooo dumb, that they water their artificial turf.”

  46. H-Man September 10, 2015 1:41 pm

Who are the two receivers? Marcus Kemp and ??? Quinton Pedroza?

    RE: Derek #42

Better not be like Waianae vs McKinley this past weekend…

  50. cocobean September 10, 2015 2:03 pm

Two thoughts on the David and Goliath situation UH finds itself in.

The first thought is David slew the giant because God was on his side. In this game God is not taking any side.

The second thought is David downed Goliath because he believed he would.

  51. Morris Buttermaker September 10, 2015 2:22 pm

Any Hiram DeFries sightings? Gotta love Hiram’s retirement job from the oil industry…go be a confidant to Urban Meyer and win like three National Championships along the way.

  52. Troy September 10, 2015 2:25 pm

As a Buckeye fan, I cannot wait to welcome you to Cbus. I love the retro unis and can’t wait for the warrior dance. Good luck, play well, and go home proud.

  53. cappie the dog September 10, 2015 2:43 pm

    2.

I remember Hawaii beating the Lady Volunteers on their home field in the second game of the Super Regionals. The Lady Vols were #1.

I remember that the Honolulu Advertiser sort of buried that amazing accomplishment with a wire report about them being eliminated after losing the ensuing third game.

The headline should have read: Hawaii upsets #1 Tennessee in the Super Regionals.

Justine Smethurst really messed the team up by not returning the next season. The silver lining though was that Stephanie Ricketts got a lot of work as a freshman.

I love Ka’ia Parnaby for completing her career at UH.

    Brooke Wilkins left early, too.

I made her a sub at the old University Blimpie.

    She didn’t tip.

  54. Don Weir September 10, 2015 4:15 pm

    MadDog50
Just came home from Baja and read your posts. In STL we practiced at CBC on a frozen field and if you hit the ground it cut you up big time.
At Neyland Stadium I remember looking up and up and up wondering when the bleachers/stands were going to end. When we came out in the flowered warm up jerseys the sea of orange fans went off.
The Joe Moore happening was at the Hyatt where we stayed.

Cowboys/cowgirls everywhere as that same weekend the National Rodeo was in town.

Coach Murphy sent me out to find a QB and another WR (road team room mate that missed bed check.

My disserttation chair played for Nebraska in their loss to UH.
Everytime I met with him he would mention the game.

How about the trip to Japan????

  55. islandman September 10, 2015 4:18 pm

    52. cappie … How about when the softball Wahine upset N0.1 seed Alabama at Tuscaloosa super regionals in 2010. With two outs, and down 3-4 in the bottom of the 7th, Jenna Rodriguez hit a two-run home run on the first pitch to her.

  62. cappie the dog September 11, 2015 3:51 am

    55.

    That’s right.

But I bring up Tennessee, because I don’t think everybody remembers that team.

    No TV.

Alabama was the overall #1 seed, but they weren’t the top team in the polls.

As for the Ohio State game: “I want to believe.”

    Mulder?

    Scully?

  63. Kapahulu September 11, 2015 4:31 am

On the way to Ohio State to cheer on our Rainbow Warriors.
Like the look of the New Retro Uniforms.

  64. Shoko September 11, 2015 5:27 am

Too bad the OSU game didn’t fall closer to Ocktoberfest. Would have made for a more memorable visit for Warrior fans making the long trek to Columbus. I’m sure 3-Prong would have enjoyed that particular event!

    Prost!

  65. chawan_cut September 11, 2015 5:49 am

Small world! On our way to Columbus with a layover in DFW and someone comes up to me and asks if I post on this blog. His name is JackFlash and he recognized me fromoneof ST’S old photos. He’s on his way to cheer for both Hawaii and OSU but he’s leaning more to Hawaii. Go Warriors!
