Road Warriors

After this morning’s practice, the Warriors are scheduled to depart this afternoon.

Three players who were iffy a few days ago — tight end Harold Moleni and linebackers Jerrol Garcia-Williams and Julian Gener — are healthy and on the 68-player travel roster.

It also appears the Warriors will take four quarterbacks — Max Wittek, Ikaika Woolsey, Beau Reilly and Aaron Zwahlen.

Because of the large national interest, the Warriors are taking two media-relations people.

With 4 QB’s, are they expecting to give reps to #2 & #3?

  2. el burro sabio September 9, 2015 7:53 am

IMHO it’s good to take #4 if for no other reason than to give him a taste of what it’s like to face 100,000 hostile fans.

  3. el burro sabio September 9, 2015 7:56 am

    On one of yesterday’s thoughts;
Most offenses will not have success against Ohio St’s defense.

  7. Tempmanoa September 9, 2015 8:59 am

It is not about the score or winning, but about playing hard and reaching a decent quality of play considering the opponent. If we can come close to playing as we did against Colorado, then regardless of the score, that would be a big victory for us. Get maybe two sacks– VaTech got only one, and maybe we allow only the same number of sacks as VaTech did at 4. In fact, while the numbers may be a little worse, if we could play at the quality Colorado did against us that would be a huge victory. Have Max throw one or two TD passes and make a few first downs, get to the red zone and get a field goal– a big victory for us.

  8. H-Man September 9, 2015 9:08 am

Just hoping Warriors can score some points. I think Warriors can successfully pass against the Buckeyes, but we need an effective running game to keep the defense honest. Maybe Paul Harris will step up, seeing he is playing in front of home folks and motivated. Go Warriors !!!

The big plays by Ohio St. is the thing that probably will put UH in a bind.

    Did Diocemy make the trip?

  12. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 9, 2015 9:49 am

Ohio State isn’t going to be playing sloppy football like Colorado did. And even if they did, they probably can afford to make them. If our defense can force errors and contain the run, it should be a fun game to watch.

That being said, if we are down more than 4-5 TD’s in the first half, I wouldn’t be against pulling out Wittek and the other starters, especially our front 3 on the D-line and give some game reps to Riley and Zwalen. Run the ball and the clock down as fast as we can and get the heck out of there. I think if Hawaii can stay healthy and get past this murderers row the next few weeks, we will be competitive in the MWC West division.

Anybody see that tweet regarding UH vs Cal in Australia next year? Any confirmation from UH AD????

  20. Inyoface September 9, 2015 10:41 am

This game will be a combine to showcase each player’s talent on UH’s team to the nation.

” If we can come close to playing as we did against Colorado, then regardless of the score, that would be a big victory for us. ”

that’s a pretty low standard of play.

Gotta take 4 QB’s. Seen how Michael Brewer got knocked out of the game? Give Max a few series and get him out. Let’s be real this is going to be a blood bath. A victory will be no serious injuries.

  26. A-House September 9, 2015 11:34 am

    ST:

How far is Canton from Columbus?

You guys going drive to Canton on “game day”??? If you do, smooth sailing and don’t get lost!!!!

Take a good navigator – don’t rely on the computer – may give correct directions, but if the driver takes the wrong turn or ramp – we still remember Las Vegas!

  27. A-House September 9, 2015 11:37 am

    Warrior Dave:

    When do you visit Canton?

Are you still in the Amish country side?

Weather forecast for game day is rain with high in the 50s – glad game starts at 1 pm, but it can get really cold sitting on aluminum bleacher type seats like Reno.

Bring large hotel towel to sit on!!!! keep the okole warm!!

  28. SteveM September 9, 2015 11:48 am

    Good morning everyone!

    RE: #12
ionderwhytheyhateme — around 6 months ago I opined something similar, although I did not attach any numbers. I said let the first/second team play the entire first half and let the second/third/whoever’s left play the entire 2nd half. This will give meaningful reps to the entire team against a quality opponent in a major league stadium. If I was a reserve player, I would take great pride in that. The coaches will really get a good look at the depth chart talent too.

  29. SteveM September 9, 2015 12:25 pm

A-House — watch for lakesideGT on game day. He is traveling independently but has booked the Panda land package. I think you are the only one in the group who has met him before.

  31. UpIrons September 9, 2015 1:33 pm

    RE: 24

I am from Canton and live in Columbus. If you go to the Hall of Fame it’s about a 2 hour drive from Canton to Columbus. That being said make sure you add time for traffic and parking at Ohio Stadium which is at least another hour or so of time eaten up. While it is a 3:30 PM game, I recommend being at the parking lot by at least 2 PM so that you can take your time walking to the stadium and partake in some of the tailgating or great wings places along the way. Anyway, this means you’ll need to leave Canton absolutely no later than about 11:30 AM. Do yourself a favor and get some Kraus’ pizza in that area if you can (sausage and pepperoni double crust is highly recommended).

My wife and I are still considering getting tickets but we’re picky cause we want to be in the Hawaii section and we want close to the 50 yard line. If we can’t we’ll be making Kalua pork roast at home and eating some homemade Hawaiian food.

  32. cappie the dog September 9, 2015 1:35 pm

There are a lot of Ohio State message boards.

Most of the predicted final scores are of the 70-10 variety.

Ben Jay got us into this.

He better be rooting for us to win.

I wish we were playing the Bobcats.

Apropos of nothing, there was a great Dublin band called A House who were active in the early-to-mid-nineties.

Their best album was “I Am the Greatest”.

    Shoot me, I’m a hipster.

  35. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 9, 2015 2:13 pm

    SteveM,

Many people would think my ideas are defeatist in nature. Quite the opposite. I truly believe we have a good enough team to make a go at a MWC championship and a Bowl. Fighting ’till the death only looks good in Hollywood.

Do you want the players to give 110% if they are put on the field? Of course, no question and I have no doubt they will. But as a coach and a strategist, you have more than just one game to win regardless of any amount of “coach-speak” quotes that say otherwise. Players need to focus on the game ahead, coaches have a much broader job that spans the entire season. They have the power to do things that a player does not.

I don’t think we will win this game, but I think we have a good team capable of giving us something to do on X-mas eve if we can stay healthy.

UpIrons — there is a UH pre-game Rally from noon-2:00 pm on game day. Details at:
    https://www.eventbrite.com/e/uh-rally-at-ohio-state-2015-registration-17987186158

Maddog50 emailed he has been in contact with them and over 3,000 are confirmed with around 900 verbal commits. So UH may have at least 5,000 in the stands.

tom-warriornation mentioned that someone in his Hawaii ticket group suddenly has an extra ticket. Contact tom for more info.

  38. H-Man September 9, 2015 2:29 pm

In last year’s Ohio St – Alabama game, Bosa often lined up at Left DE, so that means R J Hollis has the honor of protecting the QB ‘s right side. And yeah, where’s our FB?

  39. UpIrons September 9, 2015 2:36 pm

    SteveM

Mahalo plenty for that info! Glad to see so many fans are coming here. I am so proud to see this game happen and I cannot wait!

Hmmmmmm…”But as a coach and a strategist, you have more than just one game to win regardless of any amount of “coach-speak” …

Fred went 0-12…wonder what was his thinking n plan 4 the next game ?

‘WOW” yesterdays post…yes is COACHES fault for our DISMAL record…the DISMAL losses….and for the DISMAL attendance…with mucho help from BJ…can’t blame the cheerleaders for that…or the Tsaiko’s for that…he never takes advice from ne one on here…”FREE…EWALIKO”…

Donovan was right…these warriors are paying…

  41. Inyoface September 9, 2015 3:17 pm

Hopefully the defense plays all 48 minutes, last game it looked like they were standing on their heels on Colorado’s last few drives.

  42. Derek September 9, 2015 3:22 pm

Bless our Warriors against Ohio St. I saw on ESPN that UH has a 1% chance of beating Ohio St. which means to me zero chance. For Ohio St. It’s playing a cupcake. For UH, try to be respectable and stay reasonably healthy. Meyer always try to run up the score even when playing back ups. Problem is that their back ups are still better than our starters. It’s sickening to know they have so many good players. My friends are going to see the stadium and for the experience. They know UH is not going to win.

  43. Maddog50 September 9, 2015 3:31 pm

330 confirmed expect about 500 just like the Spartans!!!!!

  44. nutmegger September 9, 2015 3:33 pm

Winston Churchill said, “When you are going through Hell, keep going.”

The odds may be bad, the possibility of injury worrisome, and the man to man match-ups uneven, but the game will be played. The Warriors have no choice, they must fight. I have no doubt the Warriors will play with passion and carry themselves with dignity.

  45. st. anthony trojan September 9, 2015 3:40 pm

Mr. Hollis is gonna do the “bossa nova” on that Bosa dude…u just watch…

😳 Ooops… I read an extra zero somehow. Pre-game rally number reported by maddog50 was 330 confirmed with 90 pending. Expecting 400-500.

  47. Bryson September 9, 2015 4:56 pm

All I’m hoping for Hawaii is that they put on a good showing and stay relatively healthy I feel with our defense we have a great chance at winning some games in conference this season…

  53. oneseason September 9, 2015 6:26 pm

I like the OC Sports commercial that has announcers complementing the knowledge of Hawaii fans … as I recall, it shows fans applauding a UH volleyball match and says “Hawaii volleyball fans know a lot about volleyball” and then shows fans applauding a UH basketball game and says “Hawaii basketball fans know a lot about basketball”. I would love to see a version that adds football … with Coach Chow stepping in and commenting on what he thinks UH football fans know 🙂

  54. kev-1 September 9, 2015 8:39 pm

Hey check this out! Max Wittek was rated as having the 12th best college QB debut this year. It may be grain-of-salt type commentary, but it is definitely nice to see Hawaii getting noticed.

    “12. Max Wittek, Hawaii

Wittek completed only 19 of 38 passes in the opener, but he threw for three scores and was a key cog in Hawaii’s 28-20 upset over Colorado. The USC transfer should give the Rainbow Warriors a good shot to get bowl eligible in 2015.”

hope UH SCORES early and often from the start !! that would be a game changer !!

  56. BigFan September 9, 2015 8:56 pm

#52, the rating was for quarterbacks with a new team or as you mentioned having their debut. Still, it’s great that he had the recognition. It’s a change from only getting mentioned for coaches on the hot seat, bottom 10 and so forth. lol.
