KT looks very lean. Quickness must be improved. Strengths?

  3. Stephen Tsai August 14, 2015 9:13 am

I posted a video of a player on Instagram yesterday. A former player from the 1970s-1980s grumbled that the player is running too slowly.
It should be noted: 1) The player was in the end zone and to run some more would be to hit the video tower and, 2) It was shot in slow motion!

Great pics Stephen, as usual. Ursua looks so dynamic in all of his pics. Nice to see some of the lesser known players getting face time.

Response to Kapakahu regarding safety need:

I don’t think recruiting position specific players is a smart thing for mid majors unless you have an immediate need in which you hit up the JC ranks. QB, Kicker is obvious exception. Of course when you recruit blue chip type RBs and WRs then you give them first cracks there. But I don’t think Hawaii has the luxury to land blue chippers.

It’s smarter to just recruit legitimate athletes and let things play itself out.
My best examples are Tui Unga and Makani Kema Kaleiwahea. Unga was a good DE in high school and Keoni Bush Loo at the time played TE. Now Unga is Hawaii’s starting TE and Makani might be Hawaii’s top pass rusher. You never know how things will play out but you just recruit the best talent.

So in regards to your safety need, I don’t think we just offer a high school safety to fulfill depth. One of the athletes will come around and play safety as long as we are recruiting good athletes. Daniel Lewis was a RB/CB in high school. Will probably start/see significant time this year along with Trayvon Henderson who was a QB and corner I think in high school.

    DPK:
How do you like your new title?

  27. boolakanaka August 14, 2015 10:05 am

I don’t know if its the angle of the photos, but almost every picture of the Ursua kid, and he looks like his athleticism is jumping out at you. Obviously there are many other elements that are in play (e.g. knowing the system, getting reps, route running, situational awareness, etc…)

But the kid looks good out there…

  29. Stephen Tsai August 14, 2015 10:09 am

I saw yesterday’s link on Jerrell Jackson and LaTech.
Not sure what to say, other than JJ watched yesterday’s practice, so he’s still in Hawaii. At least he was at 4:30 p.m. yesterday.
He already has a release so he can transfer wherever he wishes. He’s in good academic standing.
But he can’t get a waiver to play this season at an FBS school. The NCAA shut down that exemption. (Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea’s case is different because he enrolled at UH for the spring semester.)
He’s a nice guy, good player, and I hope he figures out what he wants to do. It’s mid-August. This isn’t Oregon, where a guy can take a math final one day and then practice at Eugene the next day.

  30. Inyoface August 14, 2015 10:09 am

Is Kaiwi Chung getting reps at FB?

  31. letsgowarriors August 14, 2015 10:12 am

next tweet will probably be NFL.

first it was Stephen Austsin. then East Mississippi. now LaTech.

  32. Stephen Tsai August 14, 2015 10:13 am

Yep, Kaiwi Chung is getting FB reps.
By the way, make nice-nice to Dean Chung, his father. Dean is sporting a specially made “Kaiwi” hat.

  33. Stephen Tsai August 14, 2015 10:15 am

If JJ wants to stay, I’m sure they can figure out something.
But stay or go, he needs to do something. Because the clock is ticking. LaTech opens its season on Sept. 5.

  34. 3-Prong August 14, 2015 10:15 am

    They should be arriving soon.

  53. Na Alii Pride August 14, 2015 12:19 pm

Rise Up Warrior Nation! This is the year they turn it around. I’ll own up to it if they don’t. I’m still not a Chow fan (not fun), but I’ll stop whining and get behind him. I think UH athletics will get things turned around and be relevant again soon.

Once that happens, there’ll be no shortage of those who take credit for it, people like the legislators who won’t give more money to athletics, the governor who won’t step in and help, and the chancellor and president who don’t have spines.

In my mind, the heroes behind it are the Waterhouse and Ching foundations, generous individuals like Don Murphy, and all those that got behind WE GET ‘EM Hawaii. I don’t know yet about how much credit to give Dave Matlin, but he seems to have a handle things and is moving in the right direction.

SteveM, you got me thinking of that slang “juice”. I wonder how that got started and how the word relates to what it means? Does that make sense?

#1, gotta agree about KT although he always looks lean. He doesn’t look like a typical DT type player as far as looks go. Maybe that’s why he gets switched between DE and DT so much besides the need factor.

I think the ESPN announcer pronounced Oahu, O-WA-HO.

This was the Utah pre-game cheer: “1-2-3, Utah.”

Hawaii had a kid in the center shouting, I think, “Who’s house is this,” in a very rousing call-and-response cheer with his teammates.

Two words I have never uttered in my life: “Go, Tennessee!”

Day one of rooting for a confederate-friendly state.

There is a bust of Frederick Bedford Forrest in the state capital.

It got me thinking about “Forrest Gump”. What would have happened if Forrest’s mama met Bubba? Gump is named after that Frederick Bedford Forrest. In the film, you see a clip of D.W. Griffith’s “The Birth of a Nation”.

  99. Maddog50 August 15, 2015 4:08 am

Watched the video of coach Mason on the home page…..really great to see a teaching coach. This is going to make a world of difference. Read the article about a perceived small crowd for the opener. One, I sure hope they have appropriate staff on hand to handle walk and not screw up like the Washington game last year where people left after waiting so long to get a ticket-Two, certain people who always seem to have a less than positive slant on things think having the game on Thursday is bad…..an awful lot of people take Friday off for the 4 day weekend-traffic is a typical complaint—realizing everything is relative, where I’m from if you want to see an event in Chicago you better give yourself 2-3 hours! Yep hours to insure making it on time-parking is yet another thing-just a way of life. So get out there support your Warriors and you will not be disappointed. I envy those who will be there but I get 4 chances here and the traffic and parking at OSU/WI will be a big challenge, who cares and so what, it’s my Warriors!!!!
