UH needs to play Trump card

The beauty of the “Celebrity Apprentice” is that contestants are put through various business-related tests to prove their skills, contacts and innovations. Of course, there’s only one winner, but that’s fine. The winner isn’t actually going to work for Donald Trump. And the losers? Well, they’re already celebrities. So there.

The problems with UH’s searches for athletic directors (and coaches and custodians) are candidates are assessed on resumes and hypothetical tests. If, say, there were an opening for a custodian, a committee would check an applicant’s background, former employment and, perhaps, ask the best thing to do if the pipes broke. But the committee wouldn’t scatter sunflower seeds on a rug, then time how long it would take to clean.

In screening AD candidates, each should be given a task, then asked to actually solve/perform it, such as: 1) Find a way to pay for a CIT berth; 2) Cut the budget without cutting a program or slashing each team’s expenses; 3) Find a rich donor … now!

But real-application tests aren’t possible because anonymity is a big (and necessary) part of the process. More often, it just isn’t a good situation for a candidate to be a publicly known applicant … and then not get the job. And that’s why lists are cloaked in secrecy and why interviews are conducted in high-rise restaurants where candidates will never eat there again.

That’s understandable. But to mix even more metaphors, it takes more than kicking a tire. It takes knowing how to finance a car, maintain it, and be connected to quality repair shops. That just can’t happen in a showroom.

Great read, ST! Go ‘Bows! Please make this the first year we get pass the first round of our conference tournament…

I was on a committee to select summer interns. There were some applicants with really good backgrounds. The problem was we paid something like $9 an hour, and didn’t offer housing or a car. It just wasn’t a good fit to give an internship to a student from the East Coast with no ties to Hawaii nor plans to live here. I think there are certain jobs, like taxi driver, where you need some pre-familiarity with Hawaii.

  11. Stephen Tsai March 12, 2015 9:26 am

While I’m ranting today, I don’t think anybody who was on a committee that hired somebody who eventually was fired short of the contract’s expiration should ever be on a selection committee again.

  13. iwonderwhytheyhateme March 12, 2015 9:33 am

I hope the committee isn’t putting a huge amount of emphasis on finding a candidate that can guide us out of NCAA sanctions. Don’t they have consultants we can hire that will guide us through that if need be? With Ben Jay, it was said he was chosen for his strong fiscal experience.

We need to be looking for an AD that can guide us forward, not just patch potholes of years past.

Out of the top candidates mentioned in the article, I really like Dave Matlin.

Imagine if Hugh Yoshida and friends waited for applications for head football coach to fill the room after FVA was fired. Instead they proactively took the bull by the horns and targeted June Jones. They RECRUITED him. His resume included being a good fit. Fact is that is the only qualification which has any relevance for head football coach. Fact is that is the only qualification which has any relevance for UH athletics director.

    Great analogy, Mr. Tsai.

I think most of us are in a state of UHAD hiring process stress syndrome. We can only wait, watch and pray that they get it right. Try to make sense of it, and it will drive you bonkers.

  20. cocobean March 12, 2015 11:20 am

From what I gather Ricky B and Keith A didn’t meet the qualifications set by the search committee. Too bad. They both have qualities that many our our previous ADs didn’t have. Both are natural leaders. In all their endeavors they’re the cream that eventually rises to the top.

I feel the AD should have a personality that people have a hard time saying no to. Ray Nagel was a social smoozer that people found engaging. BigStan was a bull in a china shop. Both had a way of getting people to see their point of view and follow their lead. Both were natural leaders.

The “Department” doesn’t need the guy with the best resume. They need leadership. Someone who can get the “Dept.” out of the a’ama crab syndrome it’s stuck in.

  21. cappie the dog March 12, 2015 11:32 am

I repeat, there is no 78 on Hawaiian Tel’s cable listing. I already know this, and yet I woke up this morning, searching in vain, hoping that the telephone people would throw its subscribers a bone and make it available on a temporal channel. MeTV, perhaps?

I ran over my garden hose with the lawn mower after Shamberger forgot where he was on the court. $35. Still cheaper than therapy.

Benjy Taylor, I believe in you, man.

    And, oh yeah, TEXAS PAN-AMERICAN????

Amazing experience in Greensboro, NC. Attended 6 games so far with 2 more tonight at ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament. Fortunately, my Tar Heels won 2 games, almost makes up for the loss we saw at Chapel Hill against Duke.
2 former Hawaii coaches on losing end of their first game, Rick Pitino & Jaime Dixon.

  26. Gman23 March 12, 2015 12:42 pm

Can someone please guard Mike Caffey? He is going off….On a good note we lead 47-41 at the half but it was just 45-33 …we can be letting big leads evaporate ..especially in the second half…Refs clearly calling everything for LBSU

  27. 3-Prong March 12, 2015 12:45 pm

47-41 us guys at the half.

  28. clyde March 12, 2015 12:46 pm

Speaking of the refs … no technical for hanging on the rim on that dunk? Obviously, his actions deserved a technical; perhaps, it couldn’t be called because time ran out on the play. I dunno.

  29. Gman23 March 12, 2015 12:47 pm

Jovanovic and Jankovic already with 3 fouls at the half…2 other with 2 fouls..We are getting out rebounded 22-13 and LBSU went to the line 21 times to Hawai’i 14…We would be up by more if we hit free throws

  30. 3-Prong March 12, 2015 12:50 pm

Chopsueyboy: what’s the talk around town regarding pending sanctions?

Must be an unreal Mini-Madness atmosphere! Enjoy.

  31. oneseason March 12, 2015 12:56 pm

UH up 47-41 @ half. Just watching live-stats. Benjy & team have done great this season. BC & JP seemed oddly fixated on Benjy’s candid answers to JP’s questions. Asking a man if he likes anonymous character assassination and then acting surprised when he says no seems strange. Maybe comments didn’t come from insiders, but this reminds me of the railroading that JD got. Benjy seems like a very good coach and UH would do well with him leading the team.

  32. hatakeman March 12, 2015 1:07 pm

You think the Fox announcers are biased? All I hear is Mike Caffey this, Mike Caffey that…. Main thing I suppose is that Hawaii is one point more than LBS at the end.

I also have Hawaiian Telcom TV. I was also looking all over for channel 78 or even any other channel that it might be on.
I finally gave up and called Hawaiian Telcom and spoke to a live rep, she informed me that channel (Fox Sports/Prime Ticket) was discontinued on December 31st.
Funny I don’t recall getting a notice that it was discontinued.
Too bad, I guess they may have not realized that channel was tied in to UH Sports appearing on road games in Calfornia.
So Honolulu Star Advertiser: STOP LISTING CHANNEL 78 FOR HT SPORTS!
    IT DOES NOT EXIST!

    79-72

    UH wins.

    UH bench-33

UH plays tomorrow at 7pm Hawaii time (?) or 430 pm depending if UH is the lowest remaining seed remaining. If UH is the lowest remaining seed UH plays #1 seeded UC-Davis at 430 pm. UH is seeded 5th. UC Poly and Cal Poly are seeded 6 and 7 in the two remaining games today. So hope either of those two teams win so that would give UH not having to play the 1 seed tomorrow (?).

  44. BigFan March 12, 2015 2:25 pm

#30, 3 Prong, I believe I heard that NCCA said they cannot sanction NC because it was not athletics related scandal. I found that to be unbelievable because even though it was academics, it did involve the athletes.

  45. seewhy March 12, 2015 2:33 pm

How to wait for the wahine game…

  46. Derek March 12, 2015 2:40 pm

UH is a better matchup with UC Davis. Irvine and SantaBarbara can beat up each other.

  47. st. anthony trojan March 12, 2015 2:45 pm

That is kinda funny huh bigfan…athletes getting credit for not attending classes….n not athletics related…mumbo jumbo at its best….

  48. islandman March 12, 2015 3:22 pm

44.bigfan — i think the NCAA said they cannot be sued for the N. Carolina academic fraud. But they didn’t say they aren’t going to sanction N. Carolina.

  49. shadow March 12, 2015 3:32 pm

Forget spending more time & money on search committees. Incoming AD would be nuts if he doesn’t hire Benjy & staff pronto & put it to bed.

They’ve accomplished so much with all odds against them. Contrary to what the current Chancellor thinks, times a wasting to recruit & prepare for the years to come.

  50. st. anthony trojan March 12, 2015 4:00 pm

Well I read sum where that BT did turn down a 1 year extension on advice from his attorney…which me thought was not to smart…would have given him one year to work on it…n if 20 win next season…be a good plus 4 him….

Just not know what ELSE WAS IN THE CONTRACT ???

If he wins the tournament…which is possible…his stock will definitely go up…
n be good 4 him… am happy 4 that…n wish they do win it all..

  51. Warbow March 12, 2015 4:11 pm

#50, a one year extension of his current assistant coach salary? So they that mean BT wouldn’t sign on for another year as an assistant?

  52. st. anthony trojan March 12, 2015 4:15 pm

NE one know if pono is streaming the na wahine softball games ???

  53. st. anthony trojan March 12, 2015 4:25 pm

Why is the AD or whomever offered him another year as assistant so downright stupid n demeaning of that position…if is true…would tell then to stick it up also… n would not need ne advice from an attorney on that…utterly disgraceful…

Why not have offered him a 1 year extension or new contract…as head coach…little pay increase…n stipulation…20 plus wins.. n we are back negotiate again for a 3 year deal…or whatever…that be fare for all sides..n he saves face..gets a head coaching position…n work his …butt… off trying to prove his mettle…

As in the past…they never seem to treat their coaches with respect…n never seem able to do the right ‘thing’….

  54. 3-Prong March 12, 2015 5:36 pm

Bigfan, Chopsueyboy: if that’s true about athletics at UNC being untouchable, thatpretty much confirms that the NCAA stands for “No Coconuts At All”. UNC and Syracuse championships remain intact due to Hall of Fame Coaches at power conferences.

Bringing it back home, “How Bout Dem Bows!”

  55. hatakeman March 12, 2015 5:39 pm

It is my understanding that Benjy Taylor, on a TV interview, said he was not offered a one-year contract, but was told that he may apply for the job. And during his post-game interview after the last home game of the season, said that it might be his last time to coach at the Stan Sheriff.

  56. Z March 12, 2015 6:07 pm

Benjy was offered a one year extention but in an interview I think he said there was a clause in which they could fire him at any time.

  57. NorthShoreFan March 12, 2015 6:13 pm

    Guud Evening Tsaikos…bootiful day.

re…NCAA and NC. seems bs prevails here. if players are academically ineligible how is it not an infraction?
Is it ok to use academic ineligible players? if so then all programs should take a look at doing this. make money with wins.
thought Syracuse got dinged for some grade infractions too.

  58. NorthShoreFan March 12, 2015 6:18 pm

just another case of the athletic department peeps with their heads where the sun don’t shine.

That Bley..guy or who ever stated no need coach right now not urgent…so no need to recruit too then….”hey come play for Hawaii.. I not sure who the coach going be but…we get plenty sunshine…

  59. Derek March 12, 2015 6:28 pm

JMHO, I’m not high on anybody on the short list for AD. I’m actually shocked and disappointed.

  60. BigFan March 12, 2015 6:53 pm

#48, Islandman, I think everything is still up in the air but there’s a lot of conflicting or opinion based stories out there. Where did you get your info from?
Here is a link regarding what I was saying and Congress’ involvement:
    http://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/news-columns-blogs/investigations-blog/article10189478.html

Even regarding Syracuse coach keeping his job; how come UH fired it’s own? Not saying it wasn’t warranted but just the unequal justice.

  61. hatakeman March 12, 2015 7:09 pm

Z, yes, it was a hallow one-year basically on a month-to-month extension as the acting head coach. Essentially, a non-offer.

  62. hatakeman March 12, 2015 7:15 pm

I need to spell hollow correctly.

  63. Derek March 12, 2015 8:01 pm

Re: Boeheim, he’s a long time, hall of fame basketball coach who won a championship and was on the staff of the Olympic team(s). That’s the difference. He’s a somebody, and Arnold is a little fish. That’s why Hawaii gets slapped around, just like Cleveland State because we ain’t nothin’, and Syracuse is big time in basketball just like North Carolina. When Coach K is mentioned in the Rasheed Sulaimon dismissal, they just say no comment and move on, and that’s that end of story. I guarantee you every basketball team and coach does things that are against NCAA regulations. Nobody is squeaky clean. You just don’t hear about it, unless somebody (players or anybody else) blow the whistle. Don’t tell me a coach or somebody else hasn’t given a player an IPad, or bought a dinner, or loaned a car for the weekend, or hasn’t exceeded a little practice time, or even given a recruit or player a little cash to buy something small. This is common
place, but still in the eyes of the NCAA not permissable. If you don’t hear about it, no problem. If somebody opens their mouth and says the coach did this and did that, you can bet an investigation will follow. If the compliance office self report itself, the NCAA will investigate like UH did. I’m not saying that’s right or wrong, but sometimes common sense should prevail. You can always do the teachable moment thing and make things correct (like properly correcting the altered document. The moral of the story sometimes is that maybe the best thing to do is keep your mouth shut, handle it internally and silence is golden. I don’t think Gib Arnold is a bad person. I think he tries to the right things. His mistake is lying to the investigators. Some players who left who were unhappy with
Arnold probably spilled the beans too! Who knows. But I agree that the NCAA means no clue at all.

  64. oneseason March 12, 2015 8:09 pm

According to ESPN, Hawaii MBB is #44 in points per game at 73.4 … the other stats are not so impressive, but the PPG ranking is pretty impressive … http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/_/id/62/hawaii-rainbow-warriors

Looking at the play-by-play, I see that Quincy Smith had the game of his life.

Thank you UC-Riverside. An upset would have meant Hawaii playing UC-Santa Barbara. I think UH matches up better with UC-Davis.

Finish strong, Garrett Nevels. Like you were quoted, it’s your team. Be Savo-like and will this team into the tournament.

Did you know that the immortal Manroop Clair is playing for Seattle? Of all teams, they beat Chicago State earlier today. Seattle U. vs. Chicago State. That’s a WAC game.
