Delayed action

Linebacker Lance Williams is bigger, faster and stronger than he was three years ago. It is a testament to hard work, maturity and, perhaps, being a part of the grayshirt process.

Two decades ago, Al Beaver, who was a defensive line coach at the time, received a commitment from offensive lineman Kaulana Noa. The deal was Noa would delay his enrollment a year to allow himself to develop physically. Noa, in essence, became what is now regarded as a grayshirt. Noa started every game of his UH career, then played in the NFL.

Since then, the Warriors have used the delayed enrollment for players who need at least a semester to improve physical or academically. The risk is the players become free agents after the fall semester starts. That’s how UH recruit Tyler Gray ended up at Boise State, but also how UH was able to get former Fresno State recruit Tui Unga.

The Warriors stuck with Dejon Allen for a year, and now Allen has developed into one of the Warriors’ top offensive linemen. The Warriors’ best lineman, Ben Clarke, started his UH career as a grayshirt. When Norm Chow was named UH head coach in December 2011, he honored the grayshirt commitments he inherited, a list that included Clark, Williams (who was a co-captain last season) and quarterbacks Ikaika Woolsey and Justin Alo.

Here are some notable delayed enrollees in the program’s history:

> Long-snapper Luke Ingram
> Punter Mat McBriar
> Defensive tackle Mike Iosua (who initially was at military prep academy)
> Running back Joey Iosefa
> Defensive end Melila Purcell III
> Slotback Jason Ferguson
> Quarterback Inoke Funaki (who delayed his enrollment, then went on a church mission)
> Safety Leonard Peters
> Slotback Kealoa Pilares (who initially was at the Air Force Academy’s prep school)
> Offensive lineman Adrian Thomas
> Offensive lineman Clayton Laurel
> Linebacker Art Laurel
> Defensive back Richard Torres
> Safety Kenny Estes
> Linebacker Mana Lolotai
> Linebacker Blaze Soares
> Slotback/point guard Miah Ostrowski
> Defensive lineman Marcus Malepeai
> Offensive lineman Blake Muir
> Fullback/tight end Justin Vele

Wideout Rick Taylor spent his grayshirt semester as a volunteer at his alma mater, Nease High in Florida. He broke down films and, during free time, ran pass patterns for Nease’s quarterback … Tim Tebow.

* * * * *

Well, today is Friday, and that’s usually when UH announces moves. Then again, UH could wait until next Friday, which leads into spring break, when the school basically shuts down

In my opinion — and I do understand nobody really cares what I think — UH shouldn’t hire an AD until Rick Blangiardi and Keith Amemiya are interviewed. It doesn’t matter if it’s already a done deal. The committee members can doodle or play games on their cell phones during the interviews. At worst, they can steal ideas; at best, you know, maybe one of the two would make a terrific AD.

I understand that neither meets one of the desired requirements of three years college athletic administration experience (or something like that). But if that requirement applied two decades ago, there is a committee member who probably wouldn’t have been hired for the current position, either. The thing is, there are many ways to run the state’s most visible department. But you don’t know if you’re missing out unless you listen to all.

Let’s hope we have a new AD soon! According to the paper, the process should be wrapping up soon.

Whether selecting a local person or a mainland person as AD, I don’t really care. I think if this selected person qualifies and is capable! He/she should be able to adopt and strive! Right now, we need a good selection because the last few ADs either fell short or made a mistake or two and were no longer with us… Ben Jay, resigned, probably not getting along with current regime and sometimes, said too much. I think he was okay. Jim Donovan, was pretty good… got us into MWC but the travel subsidies is killing us at this point. However, I am not sure if any other AD would have been able to negotiate out of paying some forms of travel subsidies. But paying coach Mac too much and the Wonder Blunder took him out. Herman Fraiser, never fit in. He seems to do the wrong things all the time, including not resigning June Jones promptly before the Sugar Bowl and flying allkinds of people on board of the charter flight to/from New Orleans.

Basketball really is a game of swings and it knots my stomach. Wahine opened another gap, but Fullerton closing again. My stomach!

    IMUA WARRIORS!

I gotta smile after reading this…
NEW DELHI >> An Indian bride walked out of her wedding ceremony after the groom failed to solve a simple math problem, police said Friday.
The bride tested the groom on his math skills and when he got the sum wrong, she walked out.
The question she asked: How much is 15 plus six?
    His reply: 17.

The incident took place late Wednesday in Rasoolabad village near the industrial town of Kanpur in northern Uttar Pradesh state, local police officer Rakesh Kumar said Friday.
The groom’s family tried persuading the bride to return, but she refused. She said the groom had misled them about his education.
“The groom’s family kept us in the dark about his poor education,” said Mohar Singh, the bride’s father. “Even a first grader can answer this.”

The $72 Million cut from the UH budget by the House Finance Committee cannot be good for the athletic department. The major job for the new AD will be negotiating local politics, helping to heal the divide between the UH (at least the athletic department) and the State government). UH’s financial issues really result from not getting the level of state support that other schools do. Both Blangiardi and Amemiya have the poltical connections and the experience in Hawaii to get this done. The UH has known for sometime that Blangiardi would like the job (before the committee was formed), but they do not even want to talk with him. Blangiardi was nominated by one of the few business people on the advisory selection committee, but it got nowhere.

Wahine WIN…73-64. Kuehu 5-6 from line in final minute. Poor free throw shooting (15-29; 52%) makes it closer than should have been.

    Kuehu: 18 points, 4 reb, 6 ast
    King: 13, 10, 3
    Wimbley: 12, 3, 1

    I love my niche sports.

I sat through the Bolla years.

I sat through the Takahara-Dias years.

    I am happy.

What I’m not happy about is that they’re broadcasting the final on Prime Ticket, and I have Hawaiian Tel cable.

    I work on Saturdays.

Either I have to watch a recording at somebody’s house, or record the radio on the TV.

Marissa Wimbley, you must have heard me all season shouting, “You can shoot the 3!” She is the game MVP, getting the Wahine off to a hot start with consecutive treys.

Rodrick Bobbitt can’t really shoot, but that doesn’t stop him.

    AD…

I keep hearing how those two guys are outside the box thinkers. Passionate etc.

They should be assistant AD’s then. That’s like saying because I am good at something and successful that I could go run a Radio Station or something.

Why is it people here think that if we do not pick someone local its some conspiracy? The fact is that for how good these two guys are at what they do in their profession here…well there is probably 1,000 more qualified guys elsewhere.

I do not want the head of some dying TV station to run UH athletics and nor a guy who works high school athletics. I want someone like Ben Jay with a but not as smart. He was too smart…saw he could get zero done here and bolted. You cannot say he didn’t try He begged us to help. He begged everyone. He told the truth. No AD is going to fix this. If we want to compete with the big boys the stat has to fund it. Plain and Simple.

  39. cocobean March 13, 2015 12:06 pm

#35. The one thing that comes to mind is WBB season tix s are $60.00 for Srs. I attended 16 games and paid $96.00 dollars for parking. It’s to bad that the school’s general fund made more off of me than the WBB program did.

All in all I’ve attended 38 sporting events 16 WBB, 14 MBB, 6WVB, 1MVBand 1 BB. That’s $228.00 in parking fees I’ve paid since 9/14. There must be a way the UHAD can get a cut of my parking fees and that paid by everyone else who attends a UH game.

Speaking of “delayed action”, how sad that the Big West Conference has so little negotiating power that ESPN chose to show a tournament semifinal game on replay … after the live broadcast of the other semifinal. Gee, little suspense there.
UH men’s game live on WatchESPN stream at 3:30, so if you’ve got a computer check it out. It’s better than listening on the radio, or watching the delayed broadcast at 8.
I bought a Google Chromecast for about $21 so I can hook up the streaming broadcast to an HD TV. Quality can be so-so, but it’s not bad.

We need an AD who can bring in local and outside money not to exclude foreign entities. Someone familiar with the demands and needs requisite of a successful program way out in the middle of the ocean detached from most of the 49 states.

A promoter of sorts because we need to re-brand the Athletic department. Yet, once again.

We don’t need a compliance officer. We have staff positions to be the “cop”. We need to build this with men and women of integrity including and primarily our head coaches who are lead by example.

The new AD needs to surround himself with a great team that shares his passion and goals. Team players who also can measure the pulse of the community.

Oh, a couple of little birdies would help.

    …nuff said!

  51. Kapahulu March 13, 2015 1:36 pm

    ST:
I agree with you wholeheartedly about Rick Blangiardi and Keith Amemiya for AD.
The ideal situation would be to get Rick Blangiardi as AD and Keith Amemiya as Associate AD. Rick could handle the TV side of it and deal with our Mountain West Conference and Big West Conference and get us a better TV deal. The big bucks should be coming from TV rights like the other conferences.

Keith Amemiya could handle the local community relations and be an AD in training to eventually take over when Rick retires in a few years.

They both have ties to UH and the community and want it to succeed.

Both of them don’t need this job. If they accepted, it would be as a community service to the State of Hawaii.

  52. st. anthony trojan March 13, 2015 1:39 pm

All very good points senor Al….just hope those that do the selecting n picking would read it… but maybe …as ST stated…2 late… deck is stacked…

Maybe the trump card should be the ‘DONALD’ …THAT WOULD HELP…

  53. Holiday Quijote March 13, 2015 1:41 pm

The next AD should be competent to avoid this scenario-

He tells a team to go ahead and fundraise for an international tournament. He says there will be no problems or conflicts.

Later in the process the compliance department, who never knew about the proposed international trip, finds out about it and the fundraising plans then has to put and end to it because the trip was scheduled during an impermissible time according to NCAA rules.

  57. Na Alii Pride March 13, 2015 2:09 pm

Why do people keep pushing this idea of Rick and Keith as a team? It’s nice to dream, but these are two alpha males who are not interested in working for someone else.

Keith wouldn’t want to work for Rick, and Rick wouldn’t want Keith working for him because Keith would be gunning for his job.

Let’s just put it to bed.

  58. Boolakanaka March 13, 2015 2:29 pm

It’s too bad RB and KB will not be interviewed–they appear to have both a proven record of productivity and the type of gravitas to be successful in this position. Too often antiquated HR models adhere, dogmatically, to criteria without giving due deference to already proven intelligence and a history of deliverables.

To be certain, outside of positions that are highly quatitative, much applied research in this area makes strong suggestion that folks who get checks on the criteria don’t necessarily make the best candidate in the long run–see:https://hbr.org/2004/01/what-makes-a-leader

  59. oneseason March 13, 2015 2:31 pm

The new AD will have a lot of positives to start with. All the great results from the WVB, WBB, MVB, and MBB programs will hopefully offset the stress of waiting to see if coach Chow will turn things around in year 4. I think the Colorado game will set the stage for coach Chow’s future with the Rainbow Warriors and should give the AD a good indication of where the program is headed.

aloha everyone !! it funny to see as the list gets shorter for the AD da bests of the list dont even have a chance to be interview !! what a shame !! one of this two guys from hawaii would make the most coming sense to run the program in the right way and fit in !! they are Rick Blangiardi or Keith Amemiya.
this is so sad that that UH is crying for money out to the people of hawaii and they keep doing bad move and not listing to the people of hawaii !!
the people have spokening and made it more clear that staying home with this AD job was the right move !! and this 3 guy on the short list is a joke!!

  64. oneseason March 13, 2015 3:23 pm

#62 … yup. TV and radio, but no internet. The oldest media is advertising programming for the second and third oldest (but not the fourth oldest) via the oldest and fourth oldest. I would like to see the SA attempt to include internet streaming info for the local teams. But it is easy enough just to go to UH Athletics and click on whatever the media is available for the event. And … off my soap box with plenty of time to stream the game 🙂

    Yes!!!

  88. oneseason March 13, 2015 5:53 pm

UH leaders should lead. Make a command decision. Hire the man. Ensure season ticket sales. Build fan confidence. Cripes, how difficult is it?

  89. Warrior Dave March 13, 2015 6:09 pm

Awesome day for UH basketball teams. Hoping both teams play their best games tomorrow. I don’t think it’s ever happened when both teams went to the NCAA tournament.

It makes me sick that Rick and Keith have not been offered interviews. What a bunch of shibai!!!

  90. 3-Prong March 13, 2015 6:17 pm

Agree with #57 Na Alii Pride. Saying that Blangiardi and Amemiya should work together is like saying Chow should hire Rolovich without any idea of how well they know each other or how well they would work together.

  94. Da Punchbowl Kid March 13, 2015 8:21 pm

ESPN U – got no sense! Why, when we have avoided the net and recorded the delay-cast of the Hawai’i Men’s BBall game, do your announcers on the Irvine and Santa Barbara game give away the Hawai’i BBall score?

Way to drive viewers away, ESPN U know what you doing or what?!

    Tsaaah!

  95. Winning March 13, 2015 9:09 pm

If I were a local business man with BIG bucks and the AD from UH wanted to have lunch with me, you know like a sales call, and maybe some golf down the road, who would you say yes to? The guys from the mainland, DM, JM?, RB or KA. Everyone should vote online. The winner gets the job. On another note, the late Larry Little would have, in my opinion, been the best candidate for AD. He played golf with and drank with us local guys. And not your complimentary cocktail and I gotta go guys but closed the bar. Real down to earth and a genuine like for everything that Hawaii stands for! He would have been a cross between Stan Sheriff, Ray Nagel, Hugh Yoshida, and the AD when the FAB Five played-cant remember his name. Real Gentleman and a Scholar!

  96. hitman March 13, 2015 9:11 pm

52 very true my friend trump card should be the ‘DONALD’ …THAT WOULD HELP… but with this group would be donald duck !! lol let go bows

High marks to UH Athletics for releasing the Football Season tickets renewal notice this morning! I renewed and kicking in a few bucks for the H Club. Nothing wrong with striking while the iron is hot. Let’s go Rainbow Wahine and Rainbow Warriors!

  101. Former UH Athlete March 13, 2015 10:23 pm

Benjy has certainly earned the permanent HC job in my books, against pretty long odds.

The only problem now is that UH must follow state procedures for hiring. Even if UH knows they want Benjy, they still have to run through the entire process, which from personal experience, is a very tedious process in the state of Hawaii.

This is where UH is at risk… A private University, or a public one with less red tape to get through can give Benjy a job offer at any time and there’s not much UH can do if Benjy gets lured away. This could be a HUGE disaster because UH has been slow to initiate the hiring process.

  102. hatakeman March 13, 2015 10:33 pm

Then how did UH select Jeff Hall as sand volleyball coach? Was it via open advertising and selection process?

  103. oneseason March 13, 2015 10:52 pm

As far as I can recall, UH has only said they didn’t want to sign Benjy because it would limit the options for the next AD. If UH cannot hire because of written rules that have no exceptions, then they should release them. The last “trust me” we got was for the Gib’s Termination without Cause. That doesn’t seem to have gone so well.

  104. Da Punchbowl Kid March 13, 2015 11:14 pm

    Give Benji the job!

Way to go BBall Men and Wahine!!!

  105. David J. March 14, 2015 3:12 am

Good Morning Warriors!. I really got to say this but that? Nobody don’t knows how the University of Hawaii football program schedules they’re none conference’s opponents for the future games for the next’s seven years. That what’s my co-workers asks me! I told him that? It’s come down with two AD talks about playing there University where and then. Because the UNLV football schedule they’re none conference games only they’re upcoming season. And not a hard schedule like University of Hawaii have maybe only one big University. I told them and show them the next teams that will play the University of Hawaii. UCLA, Kansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Oregon and others!. And most of all they are really pack with great players too!. That’s why, I like AD Ben Jay he really did a great job at UH. But, I hope the next’s AD. do a great job by schedule large University like Stanford, Oklahoma, LSU, Florida State and others will known University! NO! Last places teams from there conference or Division 2 and 3 schools! . But not North Dakota State!. Because they really give the large University bad time or they beat them. And they’re reminding me of the old time University of Hawaii too. SO GO WARRIORS!

  106. Maddog50 March 14, 2015 3:39 am

Drove to the Southside of Chicago yesterday for the Southside Irish parade Marshal/security meeting. Had the Wahine games stats live on my phone the whole way. Got home in time to watch the MBB stream. It’s good for these kids coaches the school and the state……bring home the bids today!!!!! Go Warriors!!!!

  107. tom March 14, 2015 8:48 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

“it is announced that earlier that day Benjy Taylor signed a new multi-year contract keeping him in Manoa.”

Did not see it the announcement but such a contract is well-deserved!
