A volleyball middle blocker relies on instincts, quick thinking and rapid response.

Former Warrior middle Mauli‘a LaBarre used those skills during a disturbance yesterday at Kewalo Basin.

A man who appeared to be distressed reportedly tossed rocks toward people, then walked into the ocean, where he continued to yell. Concerned that the man might be a danger to others or himself, lifeguards summoned two police officers, one of whom was LaBarre.

LaBarre took off his uniform shirt, socks and shoes, then joined the lifeguards on a Jetski. LaBarre, who is 6 feet 9, was able to grab the man. The man was placed on a surfboard and towed to shore. He then was taken to a hospital for observation and evaluation.

It was just another unheralded Sunday for four City workers.

  16. jeezy33 March 2, 2015 10:34 am

All the media guys who don’t know what theyre talking about is complaining about the schedule….. This is the most favorable schedule I’ve seen yet…. 7 wins is more realistic than I ever seen.

  17. SteveM March 2, 2015 10:38 am

    Good morning everyone!

My initial reaction to the sked: OUCH !!! 👿
Second reaction: No Bye… good for fans, but a more literal OUCH for the team.

Third thought/reaction: Vegas in November! That’s different.

  18. jeezy33 March 2, 2015 10:39 am

    14. Al… Not a big deal…. We’ve beaten Boise once in the past 15 years??? I rather play them on the road early and use home game on someone beatable… The goal is 7 wins… So who cares if we get blown out by Wisconsin, Ohio St., and Boise… That’s 3 losses… Figure out a way to get everyone in those games playing time, and keep our core guys healthy… Focus on winning the other games..

  19. Derek March 2, 2015 10:44 am

JMHO, Wahine softball will be in the mix, but they are not a regional or World Series caliber team because Coolen doesn’t have the pitching Ace. They just don’t have that pitcher to shut down top echelon teams, UNLESS someone all of a sudden steps up big time. The offense has more potential, and a little more power so they will have to out score opponents to win. You have already seen that a lot already. Coolen knows that, but it is what it is. He’s got to find that gem of a pitcher, maybe 2 of them.

  20. hilosupaman March 2, 2015 10:59 am

I know the schedule just got released but is there any info on nationally televised games? I’m guessing Ohio State will be televised

  21. kev-1 March 2, 2015 11:13 am

    RE: Football Schedule

For the optimists … GO BIG OR GO HOME

For the pessimists … Let the excuses begin

I’m all in. Why the heck not! Go Warriors!!!

  22. Rodney March 2, 2015 11:21 am

OMG thank you powers that be!
    Another year of not bowling.
    At best 6 wins!!!
Probably 5 If we are healthy!
    Certainly expect 4 wins.

  23. Andrew March 2, 2015 11:21 am

That Colorado opener is starting to really look like a must win game

  24. 3-Prong March 2, 2015 11:27 am

Who else is going to The Shoe? I know A-House is on our tour. Upset of the Century! Cheeeee!

  25. 3-Prong March 2, 2015 11:28 am

….and for you fellow Cowboy Fans….Dez was franchised.

  26. hatakeman March 2, 2015 11:44 am

Not saying they’re capable winning a regional, but I think the Wahine softball team has a chance with Kanani Aina Cabrales stepping up as the ace pitcher to win their conference. She may not be another Stephanie Ricketts or Kaia Parnaby, but she, along with a better hitting team this season, will give it a good run. I liked this past game where Jaramillo got angry, hit a double in the 4th to score Rachel Lack who is finally waking up at the plate, giving the Wahine the lead and eventual win.

  27. cocopipibu March 2, 2015 11:49 am

    no bye weeks this year?

    GO BOWS!

  28. SteveM March 2, 2015 11:59 am

    RE: # 23
3-Prong — to partially answer your question, see:
    http://stevem.altervista.org/away15.html

Now that the schedule is out, I will be fleshing out the Tsai-ko Away Game & logistics page in a day or two. I recall Beans (?) asking a similar question a while back about a different game.

Meanwhile, everyone please post here and/or email me for inclusion on the listing. Even tentative plans OK.
We’re at Vegas again folks! November 7. 🙂

  29. al March 2, 2015 12:10 pm

jeezy…okay I shall remain optimistic. after all it was our admin that scheduled the non-conf openers and that fantastic season finale.

  30. al March 2, 2015 12:11 pm

    hmmmm

Al — no give me your subliminals….
…but it is Vegas, baby! 😛

  32. hitman March 2, 2015 12:50 pm

aloha everyone !! wow looking at the 2015 football schedule UH got a really good shot at 7 or 8 wins this year !! but 13 games in a row !! they really going need to be healthy this season!! lets hope chow gets togetter this season and use a 2 or 3 qb system in blow out games !!

  33. seewhy March 2, 2015 12:59 pm

This is a favorable schedule for the Bows. Get the big games out of the way early. Use it as building blocks for the conference.

  34. Former UH Athlete March 2, 2015 1:01 pm

    RE: 2015 Schedule:

    Best Case = 9 Wins
    Worst Case = 3 Wins
Wins needed for Chow to keep job = 7 Wins

Guaranteed losses = OSU, Wisconsin, Boise St.

I don’t have a good handle on an early win prediction. So much depends on how the QB plays and if the D-Line can recover from key graduations.

If the QB doesn’t get shell shocked weeks 2-5, I’d say UH has a somewhat decent chance to make sneak their way to 7 wins. The 2nd half schedule is really manageable my most standards. New Mexico and Nevada are very winnable road games (now that Fajardo is gone). SJSU took a huge step back last year and so did Fresno until the last couple games. UNLV is a bit of a wild card with their new coaching staff, but Sanchez has a tall order in Vegas to actually produce a winning program.

  35. kapakahi March 2, 2015 1:11 pm

Hope that UH re-considers moving the kick-off time for the Sept. 3 (Thursday) season opening home game against Colorado to an earlier time……to around 5:00 PM or so……instead of the currently indicated 7:00 PM kick-off time…….so us tailgaters don’t have to fight rush-hour traffic to get to the stadium.

  36. jeezy33 March 2, 2015 1:16 pm

    32. I don’t think Chow keeps his job regardless. Need to look at the big picture here. Even with 7 wins, Chow has lost most of the fan base. Football program needs to bring in more money. And 7 wins doesn’t justify that. Only speculating.

I can honestly say that season ticket sales are likely trending for another decline. Chow is aging as a coach and your options after this year are pretty much to let him go, or extend. You def don’t want to extend his contract so throw that option out the window. It would be dumb to bring a coach back for his 5th year without knowing his future status in regards to recruiting purposes.

I think 7-6 is very doable. But more of a job audition for the OC or DC to possbly be next HC in waiting…. Remember Oregon…. They did it with Chip Kelly. Texas intentions were same with Muschamp. FSU did it with Jimbo Fisher. Now I’m not saying our coordinators are the next Chip Kelly… But I’m sure the intentions are similar if these guys end up making a impact early on.

  37. 3-Prong March 2, 2015 1:18 pm

chawan_cut going too huh. Have appreciated his iconic youtube clips of the Sugarbowl. Cc if you are out there, please capture and post Ohio State moments too, in case I have a “difficult” time doing so…hehe.

  38. 3-Prong March 2, 2015 1:19 pm

    …thanks SteveM.

  39. bowwar March 2, 2015 1:38 pm

The Colorado game looms BIG, as the Warriors need to get at least 2 wins in their first 5 games. Colorado is “winnable”, so they have to be prepared to beat them by scoring and scoring big…I think if we open-up the offense and try to “out-score” our opponents, we always have a chance…

However, we should expect to go 2-3 deep in the QB position, as I expect to lose a QB or two if our line doesn’t hold against the heavy competition. With that in mind 3-4 string QBs will be counted on to be ready. I hope we pick-up another QB during the summer to beef up our depth.

  40. bowwar March 2, 2015 1:39 pm

Did Josey officially leave our program? We do need to look at putting speed at our wide-out positions?

  41. jeezy33 March 2, 2015 1:41 pm

    38. He’s gone… And think we been trying for a while now… Not getting any speed to come though.

  42. Derek March 2, 2015 1:45 pm

Colorado win is a must. Lose that and you’re looking at a 1-4 start in your face and that’s hard to come back from. San Diego State at home is also a key game. It is certainly should be a payback game for us since we haven’t beaten them in a long time. Should we beat San Diego State, at New Mexico is doable, and we should be able to beat one of the Nevada games on the road. Air Force and Fresno State at home is a toss up, but hopefully we can win one of those. We should be favored against home against San Jose St. and Monroe. Plus, with a win at home against Davis and I count 7 up and 6 down. Yes, things have to break right for a change, but Murphy’s law also come into play. Who’s the QB to lead us. If 7-6 happens and a bowl game, 3 things could happen to Chow.

    1) Chow returns for his 5th and final season and then retire. He will NOT get an extension.
    2) UH will decide to buy out his contract for the 5th year and UH will get a new Head Coach.
    3) On his own, Chow will decide to retire and take care of his wife/family and get his buyout money anyway. And Aloha!

Less than winning 7 games, I think UH will go in another direction for next year.

  43. Andrew March 2, 2015 1:52 pm

    16.

I gotta agree with Jeezy. Besides the obvious three difficult games, the schedule is a lot more favorable than it has been the past couple years.

  44. cappie the dog March 2, 2015 1:52 pm

    32.

The triple option can be problematic.

New Mexico was in that game against Boise State.

At the time, to the derision of my family, I was rooting for Ivin Jasper as head coach. The triple option is what Hawaii should be running.

  45. jeezy33 March 2, 2015 1:59 pm

    40. The best thing Chow can do is lead us to a bowl game and retire at the end of the season. Go out on top. 7-6 means one of the coordinators made a big difference. If we fail to win 7, hit the reset button….. You got a 5th year QB in Woolsey, a so called pro prospect in Wittek… Find a damn way and win some games… No Excuses with this schedule…

  46. cappie the dog March 2, 2015 2:04 pm

    15.

    Ulu!

Bob Coolen has the right mix of ranked opponents and mediocre ones.

    That’s why they’re 12-8.

After two seasons of overscheduling, I was stupified to see this season’s baseball schedule. On the way to the Oregon game, I was practically yelling at my cousin. “THE CONFERENCE SCHEDULE WILL RAISE THE RPI.” I would schedule non-conference opponents North Dakota, Coppin State, New Hampshire, Portland State…well, you get the picture.

Baylor, Houston…I’m praying for the best. And then they come home and play, god, Oklahoma.

  47. bowwar March 2, 2015 2:04 pm

#43: No argument there…Expectations should remain high…I hope Chow loosens the reigns on the Offense and let the OC do his thing. Any news on the two Offensive coaches (e.g. Wynn) and whether they have left?

  48. Derek March 2, 2015 2:14 pm

Ursua and Hayes, still in limbo and still complicated!

  49. bowwar March 2, 2015 2:36 pm

#46: Is Hayes the RB transfer? Ursua is a puzzler…

  50. Warbow March 2, 2015 2:47 pm

I often wonder why people here give Trap so much more lead way that Chow. The dude finished last in the Big West last year and it’s looking like another last place finish this year for the baseball bows. Oh wait, I figured it out, Trap gets to play the injury card while Chow makes no excuses.

  51. Old Diver March 2, 2015 2:53 pm

Every team is optimistic going into the 2015 season. Unfortunately Hawaii is everyone’s guarantee win, probable win or possible win.

  52. Ohio fate March 2, 2015 2:56 pm

Thinking of ohio state…. dang oregon had how many injurys and scored what??Watch out for zeke and cardale on thier running game.

  53. hitman March 2, 2015 3:26 pm

true to say that other teams are looking at hawaii as guarantee win !! but if you look back at hawaii game there lost the past of couple years are not really blow outs !! and know with more coaches if there able to do there thing might make a difference with the out come of a game !!

  54. hatakeman March 2, 2015 3:52 pm

I think they’re referring to Cameron Hayes, a cornerback from Junipero Sierra HS, Calif. His 247 Sport ranking as an ATH is pretty good. Rankings are #202 Calif rank; #147 national rank. His Rivals rating as a cornerback is 5.4. Scout rates him a 3-star cornerback recruit; # 26 Calif.; #29 West coast.

  55. bowwar March 2, 2015 4:18 pm

#48: IMHO, Fans still go out to the ballpark to watch the baseball Bows, so Trap has been able to keep his job. However, unless his teams become more competitive, it won’t be be long before Trap will be gone.

Meanwhile, Chow has caused an exodus of fans…I’m seriously debating whether to buy my season tickets after 35 plus years.

  56. Derek March 2, 2015 4:44 pm

We’ve been a football season ticketholder since Don King was Head Coach. That includes Larry Price, Dave Holmes, Dick Tomey, and through Bob Wagner. Thankfully, we stopped before Von Appen. We didn’t get seasons tickets during June Jones time, but made it a point to go on selected road games to watch them play and see different places. We are very happy with getting a full package for PPV through Oceanic Time Warner Cable and watch the games in HD.

  57. Akamai Okole March 2, 2015 4:47 pm

    WooHoo! Let the planning begin…

  58. Akamai Okole March 2, 2015 4:48 pm

    So envious

  59. al March 2, 2015 4:59 pm

    The Badgers are beatable.

  61. kahuna March 2, 2015 5:16 pm

Ah…..Stephan…I think your date regarding the UH volleyball game vs Pepperdine is wrong. The games are scheduled for Friday and SUNDAY AFTERNOON. Saturday afternoon is Laura Beeman’s ladies final home game. Don’t want volleyball fans going there expecting to see men’s volleyball and end up watching women’s basketball.

  62. tom March 2, 2015 5:21 pm

    # 57 Kahuna says: “Don’t want volleyball fans going there expecting to see men’s volleyball and end up watching women’s basketball” .

Not that there is anything wrong with watching the Wahine basketball team!

It is their last regular game and senior farewell!

  63. islandman March 2, 2015 5:32 pm

New Mexico elevation is 5100 feet, Nevada 4610 . Need oxygen .

  64. SteveM March 2, 2015 5:43 pm

I dunno if we are going to a bowl game this year… gotta play the actual games — but at least we will have $2.2 million gross (Ohio & Wisconsin games) in our piggy bank that we didn’t have last year…

  65. kahuna March 2, 2015 5:47 pm

#58….Of course not. I am a season ticket holder for women’s basketball so I would welcome the larger crowd BUT……..the folks who usually watch men’s vball and those who watch women’s bball are usually not the same.

I attend both and the volleyball crowd seems to be a bit younger while the bball crowd for the wahine are more on the mature side.

Let hope for big crowds for all the arena sports this weekend and make this week a great week for ALL!!!!

  66. islandman March 2, 2015 6:03 pm

    60. SteveM; How much did we get from the Colorado and Rice road games last year ?

  67. 3-Prong March 2, 2015 6:07 pm

AkamaiOkole, …oh, I get it, Smart A! A few times in life you just gotta go all in. Not too late…

  68. Rodney March 2, 2015 6:30 pm

    Feel bad for coach Chow
    Another insanse schdule.
We will be down to our 2nd
    and 3rd string by conference
    play,Go Warriors!!!!!
    Wish the best!!!!

  69. Formerolb March 2, 2015 6:51 pm

This reminds me of the 2013 season, but worse! This schedule is much more challenging than ever before for Chow.

9/3 — Colorado 50/50 all up in the air but under Chow, probably a L
9/12 — At Ohio State NO CHANCE
    9/19 — UC Davis W
    9/26 — At Wisconsin L NO CHANCE
10/3 — At Boise State L NO CHANCE
10/10 — San Diego State There is a chance but probably a L
10/17 — At New Mexico L. There is a chance however road games are always challenging for Hawaii under Chow.
    10/24 — At Nevada L
    10/31 — Air Force L
11/7 — At UNLV L . Im sure UNLV will improve under new head coach. Plus Hawaii plays there.
11/14 — Fresno State L but there is a chance. Im sure Fresno will be better next season.
    11/21 — San Jose State Probably a W
    11/28 — Louisiana-Monroe W

    Overall, 3-9 or even 4-8

  70. jeezy33 March 2, 2015 7:25 pm

Who gives Trap any lead way??? Most fans want him fired…. But there is a huge difference… Chows losing hurts the $$ being brought in to athletic program. Traps team somehow still bring fans to the ball park and I don’t think he makes that much $$. And While Trap isn’t very good, he is competing in one of the better conferences in the nation. I think he’s a decent mid level coach… But if Hawaii wants to succeed in the Big West, they need to get with the program and bring in a coach who can win in a better conference. It’s a pitching and defense league. We don’t have a very deep pitching staff, and don’t play very good D. Don’t execute small ball very well, and can’t manufacture runs when guys are at 3rd base. Need to bring in new staff.

But the impact of a bad baseball program is different than football. Football drives the athletic department and that needs to be figured out soon.

  71. jeezy33 March 2, 2015 7:26 pm

    65. Former OLB for where???? This is the easiest schedule under the Norm Chow era..

  72. Fei Jai March 2, 2015 8:58 pm

I thought Von appen was bad. Norm chow makes Von appen look good.

  73. Fei Jai March 2, 2015 8:59 pm

Tomey was good. Price was good. Jones was good. Even Wagner was ok.

  74. Fei Jai March 2, 2015 9:01 pm

Norm chow era is like the dark ages.

  75. pollypicador March 2, 2015 9:14 pm

My predictions for UH’s 2015 football season, including to what I think might be the point spreads.

  77. hitman March 2, 2015 10:30 pm

islandman — sorry, I was meaning we didn’t have $1.2 and $1 million payout road games last year. I don’t recall how much for Colorado and Rice last year, but somehow $600K and $300K comes to mind–anyone else know?

  81. Tak-Tak March 3, 2015 12:25 am

Watching the U H Warriors on TV the camera pans on Chow’s walking back and forth on the side line looking down at the ground and when he stops to turn he looks up to see what happened then turn around and walk the opposite direction. Has any one timed what his ratio of looking at the game vs looking down while walking? did he do this as a QB coach? Maybe he should spend more time just standing still and watching the game FULL TIME. Other HCs spent more time watching the game. If Chow sits in the booth and cannot spend the time looking at the ground and walking, maybe he can he can he can make better decisions…… Just wondering…… I’m not a coach, just former season ticket buyer.

    Cheap !!!

    WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) –
You can now own a piece of sports history in paradise. A Waikiki penthouse that once belonged to the late basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain is up for sale and can be yours for $650,300.

Chamberlain lived in Honolulu in the late 1970s to mid-1980s. The Iconic Waikiki penthouse is located above the Wailana Coffee House, across the street from the Hilton Hawaiian Village and Ft. De Russy park.

The 3 bedroom penthouse has 1,718 square feet of living space with a 696 square foot Lanai. The penthouse also has unobstructed views of Diamond Head and the ocean.

Pretty interesting schedule. After graduating from the Ultimate Optimist University, with honors I see 6 to 7 wins. I believe the defense Will be more stout and consistent. The offense be multi-faceted with possibly two Qb system income cases and scoring 21 to 27 points per. Still need to put a few more defenders in place. Special teams except for kickers were in my opinion not that special. Coverage was. Not as good as it could have been and return yardage has to improve. I think this is another are that will see forward strides. Lastly just got my first AKA newsletter nice first pitch including coaches food recipe!!!! They are also going to improve the situation. Things looking brighter!!!!! Go Warriors!!!!!!

With so many new coaches; with the outlook for different offensive and defensive schemes; with basically new offensive and defensive lines, it is difficult to make predictions on the upcoming football season. One could easily say, ah it’s going to be another losing season. Perhaps, but a lot will depend on the improvement of the defense to slow down the opponents’ running attack. With a new defensive coaching staff, the outlook is uncertain, but optimistic. The offense was good last season except for turnovers. I feel they will be improved this season. How many wins? I don’t know but think Chow has a chance for a winning season.

An optimist you might be and I hope you are right. However a historian you are not.
The offense was not good last year in any sense.
