Deal or no deal: Would you open against the defending league champion in exchange for playing the final three games against teams that were a combined 8-16 in league play last year?
Of course.
For all the angst over the 2015 schedule, the Warriors actually received a fair deal from the Mountain West Conference.
The schedule’s degree of difficulty — 13 games in a row without a bye, two road games against Big Ten schools in a 14-day period — was UH administrators’ doing. (We won’t even get into moving the opener up to a Thursday evening.)
The way the days aligned on the calendar allotted NCAA teams 14 weeks to play the regular season. Because the 14th week is set aside for the league title game, MWC teams had a 13-week window for the regular season. The Warriors opted to use the so-called Hawaii exemption, allowing them a 13th regular-season game. By previously filling four non-conference games at the start of the season and one for the regular-seaosn finale, the Warriors were left with eight weeks to play eight MWC games.
No matter what, the rotation called for UH to play a road game against Boise State, the 2014 MWC champ. For UH, it is unfortunate the BSU game comes a week after a road game against Wisconsin. But that actually isn’t an all-bad thing. Boise competes in the Mountain Division; UH in the West. The outcome counts toward overall and league standings, but the Warriors’ main competitors are West members Fresno State, San Jose State, San Diego State, Nevada and UNLV — not Boise State.
Even if the Warriors were to lose their first two MWC games, against Boise State and San Diego State, they still could make a run for the West title. The final three MWC games are against UNLV (1-7 in league last year), Fresno State (5-3) and San Jose State. The FS and SJSU games will be played at Aloha Stadium.
The Warriors could even lose five of their first nine games, and still have a shot at a winning overall record. They should be favored in three of their final four games.
If the schedule is tough, the finger should be pointed at UH’s first-floor offices instead of the MWC headquarters.

When I first saw the schedule yesterday, I thought: Sheesh, somebody at the MWC doesn’t like UH.
Then when you take away the non-conference games, it’s not a bad setup. If I were UH, I would want to play the West teams later.

Would you rather play Boise with a new QB early, or late in season with Bowl birth on line at home???
Easy answer: Hawaii has beaten Boise 1 time in past 15 years??? Play them early on road, take the loss, no big deal…. But Fresno, Air Force, San Jose, SDSU are all winnable home games now. Rather play Boise on the road then Boise at home and have to play SDSU on road… More win opportunities. Then MW gives us great road win opportunities at Nevada, UNLV, and NM. Will we win those road games?? I dont know.. But all 3 are winnable.

The football team is taking it in the shorts for the Athletic Department. Essentially, they are sacrificial mercenaries for the betterment of the whole. The games against Ohio St and Wisconsin will generate $2.3 million in revenue. The other teams, all 21 of them, should throw the football team a party. At least they can show up at Aloha Stadium for the games.
I remember when I was in college a hundred years ago, I complained about my tough schedule.

At least no one can complain that we have a “cupcake” schedule haha. It’s going to be a challenge. Just hoping that the first few games don’t get us too deep with injuries.
anyone familiar how the last 2 large donations to UHAD will be split and how soon will they see the $$$?
this could enhance/raise the probability that UHAD may be more solvent in 2015 and into the future; especially, if the revenue producing team increase their income/gate receipts and donations rise – maybe, just maybe!

13. I wouldn’t know but I think the bye is slightly over rated. I guess a former UH football player could answer that one better. But the past 2 years, we haven’t done anything after a bye. Losing both games. We had a bye in year 1 after USC I think and beat Lamar… But I don’t think having a bye has that much of an impact for us. I thought most guys last year said they wish they didn’t have the bye when the bye week came about.

Thanks ST, I feel a little better about the schedule now seeing the possibility for a bowl game run at the end. The 13th game exemption was to help Hawaii sell one more home game to offset additional costs for living remotely in Hawaii. Can’t complain…as we are seeing, such games (and body bag ones) are for the benjamins. As a fan, I don’t like bye weeks but I can see it helping the team heal and rfeset.
Think only the 3 game will be tough to win. (Ohio st, wisc, Boise st). All others are winnable. Imho
With this schedule 13 straight maybe got they moved the 1st Game up. Extra rest days. Maybe they knew the schedule was going need like this so they decided to move it up? Idk
Hey, MWC did not give any school a bye on the week before it plays UH. My recollection is that a number of schools had that extra week to rest and heal up before playing UH in the past. The playing field may have evened out.

9/12 — At Ohio State- Blowout Loss (This is a blow out body bag game and the QB AKA 12 gauge is going to blow the Warriors away on the road)
9/19 — UC Davis- Win (I see a beat up Warrior team winning in a close game)
9/26 — At Wisconsin Blowout Loss (I see another embarresing body bag blowout loss on the road)
10/3 — At Boise State- Blow out Loss (At Boise on the road, enough said)

6 Wins. No Bowl game.
Every MWC game has been labeled winnable for the past three years.
I know if you count my W-L it’s 7 wins but the Nevada and Air Force games are a toss up for me. So 6 wins, no bowl game and a new head coach.
The MWC has done Hawaii a favor with this schedule. Hawaii has a real good chance of winning the Western Division. The Nevada and San Diego St games will be the key. I can see Hawaii beating Fresno St, Air Force & San Jose St at home late in the season and winning against UNLV and New Mexico on the road. Boise St is a sure loss whether on the road or at home.
I just can’t get into a positive frame of mind when it comes to the football team. No matter how hard I try to convince myself that the change in staff was needed and the schedule is 7 games winnable, I’m still at odds with myself about renewing my tix or go PPV. I dread the thought of sitting in the stands and seeing the same old, same old.
In my opinion Chow should be making a greater effort to encourage the fence sitters like me. He and his staff should be more visible and media friendly. They should be out there selling themselves and the program. They all know a significant drop in season tickets will be a big misstep in starting the season.
It’s disconcerting to me when people like Miano appear in the media, giving his take on UH football, much more than Chow and his staff combined.

Coco Bean – Agree Chow needs to be more media friendly, informing fan base about all efforts football should/would help. Not communicating hurts him more than it helps him.

It was the constant negativism that seem to be constantly ‘oozing’ out to the media …from the ‘EX AD OFFICE’…the ‘doom n gloom’ which was the tripe that killed the real enthusiasm that the program sorely needed…

I’m with Cocobean #26…I truly want to support the program and renew my season tickets, but I don’t see the Head Coach and his staff trying to promote themselves and getting the fans excited. You gotta admit the PR and marketing of our football program sucks…And…It doesn’t help when the AD creates an atmosphere of negativity. I think the new AD has to be someone with a “positive” demeanor and “spins” a positive outlook despite our challenges. Likewise our head football coach needs to do the same. I think we have the elements for a successful season, but it starts with the leadership. I always liked JJ because he’s a “self promoter”, just like Miano and Tomey. Tomey could lead us into a Lion’s den with chopsticks to defend ourselves and we’d still think we had a chance…
Much love to the people who donate — to a school, charity, church, etc.
The key, though, should be making the money stretch. Let’s pick a sport that’s deep in red ink. Softball? Women’s basketball? Swimming? The donation should be used in an endowment, which: 1) A team could draw on the interest every year, or 2) Subsidize scholarships.
The fear is, say, a $1 million donation goes into the black hole of this year’s budget, never to be seen again. Then what happens next year? And the year after?
Any word on who the quarterbacks coach will be? usually it is the offensive coordinator– Bailey was the QB coach at ISU. Did not see Wynn’s name so that leaves QB coach open.
Three things I’m concerned about: 1) After the Wisconsin game how many healthy bodies will we have left. 2) With no bye week, there is no opportunity for injured players to mend. 3) Depth…we could end up w/ 3rd or 4th team guys not ready to play being forced into the game. If this happens on the O-line I don’t care who you have @ QB, he’ll be running for his life

For my sanity, I have to believe that we can handle the War Hawks at home.
ST #33 – I agree, and I hope there were stipulations on the $1.2 million that was donated. I hope it can’t be used to pay down the deficit. It should go to endow scholarships, improve facilities, and other long term projects that will help us in future years.
I think that many people are reluctant to donate to UH because they have no faith in the powers that be to use the money wisely. Who could blame them? Look how long it took to build T.C. Ching Complex, and it still isn’t “finished”. You think we ever get a donation from that foundation again? My guess is they think long and hard before writing another check to UH. Maryknoll built their gym way faster. And it’s beautiful.
How come we’ve never seen pictures of the inside of Ching complex? I know pictures exist. BJ had to send some to the NCAA to prove they were moved in!
ST, you’re right. Endowments is the gift that keeps on giving unless the markets crash. People can continue to contribute to the principal each year and grow the endowment over time.

Depends how the donation is structured (see your friendly attorney).
You can donate the sum to a particular sport or sports; you can state in your Letter of Gift that the sum being donated is to only supplement the usual allotment paid to that particular sport. For example, you take the average sum given to the softball team from the athletic budget for the last several years and add to it by your donation – in short the AD cannot reduce their allotment because of your donation.
The Ching Donation was, as I understand the deal, a sum to be matched somehow. The Ching Foundation gave $5M with the stipulation that UH had to match the $5M within a 5-year period.
It was like the Omidyar Donation to Punahou – it was a matching grant and not an outright donation.
Incidentally, the donation benefits our Community just as donations that may go to other schools Roosevelt, McKinley, Waianae, St. Louis, Damien etc. The point being that people have open their wallets/pocketbooks to aid the community

Maybe the picture of Bailey with the QB’s working out answers the question of who the Quarterbacks coach will be.

I often wonder how the UH chooses the contractors involved? I wonder if its legal people ever put in penalty clauses in the construction contracts? I often wonder whether the legal people require the contractors to make preliminary studies before getting into contract terms with them – like checking where pipes, conduits etc might be.
I get a bit irritated when I read about more money is needed because they discovered pipes or conduits below ground; grounded up coral sand instead of sand for sand volleyball; dugouts where you need periscopes to see the surface etc.
With this front-loaded schedule, the likelihood of an end of season string of wins increases. With 7+ wins, UH gets a great momentum boost leading into a bowl game. The only downside is that fans would tend to hold off buying Hawaii Bowl tickets until the very end. This is the time for optimism, buying season tickets, and hoping the new coaching staff will lead the Rainbow Warriors to at least as many wins as the past three seasons combined.
I think it’s sort of a combo deal.
I think Chow also will work with QBs.
Bailey is an interesting guy. Not sure how the offense will be, except everyone will have fun.
I’m so proud to born and rises in Hawaii!. Since living in the mainland for 22 years. Peoples always told me that? Hawaii shouldn’t be playing in Division 1 sports. But look what other MW teams play. Like one UNLV their never play with a big teams who are ranked in the top 10!. But they do play with big teams with unknown names on the rosters. But not Hawaii! .

Re-Pictures of players working out
The first word that comes to mind is: uniformity.
Every player is cut from the same cloth, assembled in matching apparel and shoes.
This is impressive to this onlooker.
For it breeds discipline and sheds out individuality. The same tenets (principles) that the country’s military is built on.
In the past (especially during the Mack years) there wasn’t as much as an emphasis in discipline . Some players would have non-matching socks, shoes, long hair; others would have their jerseys hanging out past their knees (exaggeration; CP is one player that comes to mind). One practice I went to- all nine assistant coaches had on different colored uniforms (Gordy had on his reds and the Lee’s had on their signature navy blues). It looked raggedy.
The point is that an onlooker (potential recruit,donor, UA representative, fan etc.,) has to be impressed with how the team concept, uniformity and discipline is emphasized weather it be watching the Chow coached team workout in person or scanning these pictures (note-give credit to where credit is due). I am.

Question of when spring practices start for the Warriors.
I don’t know if it’s been posted here. But I did see Phil Steele (thankfully we have him) post that the Warriors start spring practice on Sat., April 4 and conclude on Sat., May 2. Also there is a listing of spring dates of other teams.
I hope Tom’s clients million doesn’t go to the AD. I don’t trust Ben Jay going to the mainland all time giving shout outs to all his former Ohio St friends. Very ironic he won’t be in Colombus on UH’s dime. Check the Star Advertiser how much money Jim Donovan spent on family, friends and supporters in his years as AD too. Fine dining on a beer budget.

There is a difference between the appearance of discipline and actual discipline. I don’t remember a team and it’s coaches making so many mental errors over a three year period during games.

Is Coach Bailey allowed to be with the players during conditioning? I hope we don’t get slapped with an infraction with the NCAA.

The landscaping is there, partly because of Beemer (I think). All the players look the part. Strict. Disciplined. Streamlined. Programmed.
The plumbing falls on Chow.
There are so many leaks.
I think the assistant coaches and players take on the personification of the person that’s leading them. Chow’s more of a snapper, short fused temperament type of a person whose personality (impatient, narrow minded) doesn’t lend itself to 1) properly instructing the player 2) properly managing the game, thinking rationally 3) bringing the best out of the player or his assistants 4) promoting morale 5) promoting chemistry within the staff 6) minimizing mental errors amongst the players 7) fine tuning of execution in practice (there is a lot of sloppiness).
I ask this question how frequently do you see Chow on the sideline coaching up his QB, diagramming plays on a clipboard (like how Jones did), or even offering encouragement to his players? Very few times.
Therefore I think for the most part mental errors by the players, I believe, and game time lapses by the coaching staff are a product of the head coach–his instructing, his planning (practices), how he handles his mistakes, how he handles his players mental errors (penalties thereof) and his leadership.
Endowing some of our sports would be a great idea—here are some general thoughts on there utilization–People often mistakenly think of an endowment as a kind of interest-earning checking account that can be drawn on to cover expenses as needed. It’s actually more like a trust fund—one that must last not only 50 or 100 years but in perpetuity, without its real value eroding over time. An endowment is therefore invested for the long term, and its purchasing power must be maintained indefinitely. In periods of strong returns, we are able to reinvest a good portion of investment income and appreciation so that we can draw upon it in leaner years. The economic volatility of the last several years underscores the value of the university’s long-term approach to endowment spending.

Before conference championships we always saved the big game for the last game.
I just want our players to survive this year and hope for better things next year.
The first 3 games, sometimes 4, are considered preseason games in college football even though it does count overall.
