Max opportunity
Max Broman is one of those hard-working, never-complain guys that every football team needs but might not be able to put on scholarship.
Broman, who was raised in Utah, gave it the old college try when he served as a scout running back while redshirting as a freshman in 2013.
Even though Utah residents are eligible to participate in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program, in which a non-resident pays 150 percent the price of a resident’s tuition, that still comes out to $15,600 annually for tuition and fees. And that does not include housing, food and other living/school expenses.
And so Broman became another walk-on who could not afford to live his football dream. He quit the UH football team last year.
But while Broman left the team, he did not leave Hawaii. Instead, he apparently worked to help cover school expenses. Broman is back with the Warriors, this time as a linebacker.
A walk-on needs to be in the program at least two years before being awarded a scholarship without it counting against the 25 initials a team is allowed each year. Broman will need another year for consideration for an initial-exempt scholarship.
Meanwhile, he continues to work hard.
He also is helping, in small part, in supporting the athletic program. Walk-ons, like all non-scholarship UH-Manoa students, are required to pay $50 a semester in athletic fees.
Well, I am confused as to why Max Bronan left the team in the first place and then rejoined later. What is his major and what does he plan to do with it?

why do scholarship players not pay the $50 athletic fee? here, I thought every, and I mean every student, had to pay the fee.

Look for the player(s) after practice running the grass hills at full speed.
This I saw. MB, JM and some other player.
The players would start at the bottom of the hill, football in hand, and mimic receiving a handoff from the QB and then sprint low to the ground up the hill.
These are the type of players you want to pull for. Handworkers, dedicated to giving it all they have, that are an inspiration to their team mates that do have scholarships.

Name a former transfer QB, joining the Warriors with 1 year to play?
(similar circumstance as the incoming USC QB-player wanted more playing time at his prior school).
Came over from Stanford. Sat out a year. Was awarded a scholarship and then had it revoked.

Note-I just looked up his stats. I didn’t realize it was that bad. Saw this player in games…thought he had a good arm (was he a lefty?).
Question-Where does one draw the line in regards to the school revoking a student-athletes scholarship? I say get the ones for assault, domestic violence, DUI’s…all pertinent criminal offenses. No grey areas. This player learned his lesson the hard way.

yet, I must commend those 3 players who have the “heart” and unfortunate that some scholarship players may be of the opinion that I don’t have to train extra hard cause I got a scholarship – that attitude may be very detrimental in football and in the future – seen that too many times at work where a fellow employee “slacks” because he/she has a job!

I think Max Broman had to work, maybe full-time, to earn enough to put away enough money for this year’s school expenses, let alone paying for last year’s school and living expenses. I have a friend who is doing the same, dropped out of school this semester, now working full-time to save enough to cover school tuition and expenses for the next couple of years.

My youngest sister attended UH on an athletic scholarship (Women’s Track).
She continued to devote a lot of time to running.
I think most athletes do continue to work hard.
That fortitude will carry Max far in life…You can’t beat a person who strives for a goal and is willing to work for it. I hope he’s successful in playing for UH and getting a scholarship. Hopefully, he can get on special teams first…
I think Jason Muraoka probably deserved a scholarship a long time ago. He was Scott Harding’s PP last year. He does the right things. He’s a good teammate. Plus, he reminds me of Randall Okimoto.

I always thought Broman reminded me like Brock Forsey, the former Boise State running back. Glad he’s still with the program and he wants to be here. You root for guys like that. I hope he gets a chance to play this coming year.

gigi — I have not made a listing of “firsts” since spring 2007 when DPK had an impressive streak considering ST posted a new blog entry anytime between 5 – 11 am daily. I do not recall if you were ever first in previous years, but you do hold the unofficial record for most posts in a day. I forgot the exact number but I recall noting it was around 20% of all comments that day. Those were the days when we had 200-300 comments per day and it was a fun time.

K-State also has open nonconference dates remaining in 2016, 2018 and 2019. The Wildcats are hoping to add another guarantee game at home in 2016, and will likely try to do the same in 2018 and 2019 with games against Mississippi State already lined up for those seasons.

While I understand the circumstances (Ma’ake giving his younger bro Chris a healthy kidney) surrounding the timing of naming the Kemoeatu brothers as honorary UH game captains, it still felt odd to me……as a longtime diehard UH football fan……to honor former Utah Ute players…..even if they are local…..and regardless of whether they made it to the NFL…..instead of a former UH Rainbow and/or Warrior greats.
Just guessing but I’m pretty sure that it must of felt……more than just odd……to former UH Rainbow and Warrior players…..especially those who are currently on the Na Koa Football Club Board of Directors (Darrick Branch, Shawn Ching, Leo Goeas, Mike Iosua, Mitch Kaaiali’i).

Well if you think about it, Chow spent much of his coaching years in Utah and coaches tend to hire people they have worked with in the past or have some kind of connection with.
I guess is up to coach 2 pick whomever he wants as honorary capts….n guess no one has a veto power over him….unless sum one that has a lot of negative baggage…
me suggested sum time back…our sumotori in Japan (ALL OF THEM)….be nice if he did that b-4 he leaves at the last game he will coach at UH…should fill sum seats….which we sorely need to be filled…

Ralph that is interesting because I’ve noticed for awhile that next year (2016) there are only three non-conference games scheduled, Michigan, Kansas, and UMass at home. If can schedule K-State for 09/17/16 the team can stay over for the Kansas game the next week.

Once again the better coached team pulls out a close game.
UH doesn’t need another away football game in 2016 (unless Kansas cancels). With UMass the only OOC opponent lined up to play at Aloha Stadium, the need is to schedule another home game in 2016, and ideally two. Paying an FCS team to come here could fill one slot, but for the other it’s important to sign a home-and-home agreement with an FBS team. The return game could be in 2019 when UH already has three home OOC games on the schedule.
I think a good FBS prospect would be Cincinatti, which already has two home OOC games and only one away OOC game scheduled for 2016, but no home games scheduled for 2019. The Bearcats could play at Aloha Stadium on September 17, 2016, when both UH and Cincinnati have open dates. The return game could be played at Nippert Stadium on September 28, 2019 when, again, both teams have open dates.
Based on Don Robbs description of the photo of the Oregon runner being tagged out, and his statement that Hawaii was robbed of a win by the official, I hope the official gets a reprimand. Great job by the photographer! Classy comments though from Don about how good Oregon is.

IMO his playing calling at times was dismal. I think he needed to go. I am now looking forward to a better game situational play calling this coming season. I wish him well. I believed that he tried his best.

Jordan Wynn went straight from college to Hawaii GA (1 yr), then to calling the offensive plays. Timmy Chang had a professional career before joining SMU as a GA in 2012. Playing career:
2000–2004 Hawaii
2005 Arizona Cardinals
2005 Detroit Lions
2006 Philadelphia Eagles
2006 Rhein Fire
2007–2008 Hamilton Tiger-Cats
2008 Winnipeg Blue Bombers
I don’t think the comparison is the same. While he may not have played much as a professional, Timmy saw a lot of different offensive schemes and coaching styles traveling from team to team over four years. His experience depth is much more robust.
Brian Johnson who is now the quarterbacks coach at Miss State also took a similar path to coaching.
Jamies Winston might be another JaMarcus Russel. Poor work ethic and lazy.
