No collateral damage

A not-uncommon scenario is to try to buy tires only to be told, upon further inspection, your car also needs a brake job and other unplanned work.

But in the NCAA’s allegations against UH, it is — metaphorically — only about the tires, or in this situation, only about the men’s basketball program.

The UH athletic department is consistent in self-reporting any possible infraction, even what would be considered the most manini. Butt dial? UH writes a report. When the NCAA came down — once, twice, three times — it checked all of UH’s proverbial self-police logs. The conclusion, it appears, is there is no collateral target.

No UH sport but men’s basketball should have been concerned. But, still, there are no guarantees when the NCAA brings the finger-print duster. In this case, for 19 UH sports, no news is good news.

How about publishing today’s guest list?

No need publish. I have it right here on my kitchen table.

  4. al January 31, 2015 8:44 am

Denial is the worse betrayal in this case.

Shame on us all that Glib Arnold fooled us all the way to the bitter end.

  5. al January 31, 2015 8:45 am

Okay, I’ll bring the malasadas and milk.

  6. Nanakuli January 31, 2015 8:46 am

ST, any news on who Coach Chow will bring in to interview for our open coaching positions?

  7. al January 31, 2015 8:51 am

    “Fool me once…shame on you.
    Fool me twice…shame on me.”

Yup, we are a bunch of fools for allowing us to be twice fooled by an Arnold (Frank and Glib)

    …nuff said

Steven my dear friend, I get it and truly understand…..it is best to let this weeks visiting crew get done what needs to be done and the results will be on display sometime throughout the day on Wednesday. I can only guess you are just dying to get some news out……as for me I can wait. Thanks—-Go Warriors!!!!!!

  9. kev-1 January 31, 2015 9:00 am

When Fotu left the program, to me that was confirmation of wrong doing. Whatever happened, maybe we will or won’t find out all of the details. My guess is we won’t considering UH’s track record of coming clean.

What is a joke to me is that you would expect to put a winner on the court if you are going to cheat. Gib allegedly cheated and was a 500 coach.

Also, lets not forget that in cases of alleged improper benefits, players are involved too. Players know when they are getting things they shouldn’t. They are young, but they are not children. They know right from wrong. So to me, it says a lot about a player (or players) too.

  10. Hank January 31, 2015 9:43 am

Please don’t let the NCAA be judge and jury. Let’s use our attorney’s. I trust the NCAA to be FAIR as much as I trust Bernie Madoff with my piggy bank.

reading some of the tales of former ballers at UH, seems they had some good times and was a bit kolohe while at it. they also turned out to be great people. don’t expect all kids to be pono all the time.

  15. tom January 31, 2015 10:20 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

ST or Others: I heard on TV about a Commission that is being proposed consisting of a couple of Regents, three political types and a couple of UH coaches that would be responsible for selecting/appointing the AD and coaches.

But I have not seen anything in print.

    What gives?

    I agree. Challenge them!
I think that we should fight this cloak and dagger behavior of the “investigation”.
Have them put up and prove, or shut up and go away.

    http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/26260692/uh-hires-attorney-in-basketball-investigation

On the surface it seems to me that the school and Jay are taking the proper steps in answering the charges. Back in August, Jay in anticipation of a letter of allegations by the NCAA, hired expertise in this case (Alabama based law firm/attorney).

At this point my hope is that the hired expertise attempts to seek the lesser/least penalties for his client (UH). Obviously.

I would also anticipate Ferd’s FOIA card “up his sleeve” to come into play sometimes soon. If there is anyone in this state that routinely uses the Freedom of the Information Act…it’s Ferd. He can get information out of UH (and he has in the past…i.e., UH’s guest list at the Sugar Bowl) by using the FOIA card.

I want to know what are the contents in the letter, which has not been released to the public. Second, what is the running bill for the hired expertise in this case.

  19. A-House January 31, 2015 11:43 am

    NCCA investigation:

me likens ( not the Underworld or algae that grows ) the investigation, in principle, to a “discrimination” suit which allows them to get into every nook and cranny – even in areas where the “alleged” wrong doing did not take place

another similar characteristic is beat up on the little ones, but let the big fish go with a MINIMAL slap on the wrist – you know, the big/well known athlete and BCS schools – yep, very few of the Power5 ever get into trouble – like what happened to U of Miami with that booster, and Texas A&M with Manziel, and Winston at Florida State

we all know life is unfair, but to establish a “pattern” of willful punishment of only the little ones rubs me the wrong way – yep, power and bokuu $$$ will get their way each and every time!!!!!!!!!!! pattern also includes any “disgruntled” player who left the program – is their testimony really legit? can be challenged in phase 2 and 3?

now, for UH, how will the so-called power attorneys help UH? will it be in the next two phases?

  20. A-House January 31, 2015 11:51 am

    ST:

you hang on to that recruit list and explode them on 2/2/15 – who did and who did not

I have little hope that any of the local athletes will de-commit and commit to UH – all that glitter and promises of a Power5 school is much too strong of a pull to many, if not most, 18 year-olds

besides 2016 may bring a new coach and staff – yet, there are those who will commit even this knowledge – good enough for UH, but not Power5 schools – life is a reality – plus or minus – one must accept and live with this

caring, determination, and heart may create a very positive result(s) and that belongs to each athlete.

  21. A-House January 31, 2015 11:55 am

    #18:

the “brass” at UH don’t care cause it’s not THEIR MONEY, yet they like to “dick-around” with those who pay their salary

and good or bad as a “prof”, they all seek “tenure” to guarantee a paycheck – heck, how often do you hear of a “prof” quitting? change jobs, but never quitting!!!

  22. BigFan January 31, 2015 12:13 pm

A-House, at least you have litte hope of local athlete’s changing their minds. That is better than no hope. lol.

  23. st. anthony trojan January 31, 2015 12:28 pm

Me neva understand…why always have so much ‘dramas’ up there at UHAD….
Why not just post all the so called charges on the website for all to read…n redact all names etc…. that they presume is what it should be….names etc will come out ne way….so why all the BS….

AND JUST MAKE A NOTE… ALL CHARGES WILL BE VIGIRIOUSLY DEFENDED… or sumthing to that effect… case closed…

    No more speculation here…or other blogs…radio…or tv….

No need ask questions…reply will be…go read it…on our site…

  24. el burro sabio January 31, 2015 12:32 pm

All bills introduced are on a website available for public consumption. It’s easy to propose a bill at the legislature and difficult for said bill to make it out of committee, therefore it’s not an issue yet. Guarantee there are other bills that could have a much bigger influence on your lives if passed.

  25. kapakahi January 31, 2015 12:43 pm

JMHO that…..DeSean Holmes tripped UH last weekend……but didn’t solidify his “soft” lean to UH……and is now tripping SDSU this last big recruiting weekend……

    https://twitter.com/GregBiggins/status/561307973545254912

Like ST previously stated…….that SDSU is the real threat…….especially with DH…..since so close to his home…..

  26. tom January 31, 2015 12:51 pm

    LOA: re: #23

Thanks. Kinda surprised that the print media (i.e. SA) didn’t see fit to print it.

Might be a way for the legislature to fund UH Athletics without Upper Campus’ approval (meddling?).

  27. A-House January 31, 2015 1:27 pm

    legal questions:

under what circumstance(s) can UH NOT continue to pay Ben Jay and/or terminate him earlier even if he said it’s effective in June 2015?

IMHO, it’s crazy (well considering it’s UH Manoa) that they would allow a “lame duck” AD to collect 6-months of $$$ and what has UH to show for it?

well, let’s see, acting chancellor said he would have a replacement UHAD in place before 7/1/2015 or “mid-year” – dragging his feet so the process will take more than 6-months to completion

UH must be the LAUGHING STOCK of all colleges and universities on the mainland and maybe internationally – but, acting chancellor does not mind so why should we? why should the athletic department? why should the coaches? why should the athletes? cause the MAN said so!!!!!!!!!!

so, the “power” thing and don’t mess with my “territory” continues unabated – don’t those educators understand that “paternalism” in Hawaii ended just after WWII when the “Nisei” returned from battle and began to challenge Hawaii’s Big 5 businesses? guess, being an educator/professor is not necessarily being “bright” to understand all that which impacts on manini decisions that most “common folk” in Hawaii understand – no wonder why so many scratching their head creating “balding spots” – me, including!!!!!!!

  28. islandman January 31, 2015 1:33 pm

    6. Nanakuli –Someone said interviews were on the mainland and the DC could/ will be someone with UH experience and familiar with UH fans.

  29. NorthShoreFan January 31, 2015 1:42 pm

I still waiting on word as to what NoClueAtAll will do to North Carolina for the ACADEMIC FRAUD they got busted for or did I miss something????
One would think some degrees might be null and void, if anything.

  30. islandman January 31, 2015 1:51 pm

Someone said on another forum that academic fraud may not be NCAA’s kuleana or something.

  31. warbow January 31, 2015 1:56 pm

Someone tells me that Hawaii will end this recruiting period with a whimper. Oh well, maybe next year.

  32. NorthShoreFan January 31, 2015 1:59 pm

me thought you needed a certain gpa /core classes to be eligible to stay in school. If you disqualified from school, how you can play?

  33. papajoe2 January 31, 2015 2:25 pm

Sooooo…..Is UH still paying Gib? Does he have return whatever money if UH did pay him? Can UH cut off future payments if necessary since he lied and embarrassed UH? Isn’t there a “code of conduct” for coaches too? Whose idea was it to continue to pay Gib? Maybe he/she/they should pay off whatever damage that will effect UH.

  34. mytake January 31, 2015 2:35 pm

Never admit guilt. Thats how the system works. Hire high powered law firms and take the NCAA on. Raise the excise tax and lets have at it. Don’t take any crap from the NCAA. Lawyer them into submission.

  35. hatakeman January 31, 2015 3:17 pm

Ben Jay could have waited till June to announce his resignation. But by announcing in December, he gave UH time to plan for a change. That’s why a new AD won’t be announced any sooner, not unless UH feels they need to move towards a dismissal (but without cause). Well, that’s my take of this matter.

  36. al January 31, 2015 4:01 pm

36…I thought it was all about the money.

  37. seewhy January 31, 2015 4:09 pm

The refs pretty much handed Long Beach the win…

  38. Stephen Tsai January 31, 2015 4:18 pm

    Nanakuli:
Chow already has interviewed candidates. It’s going to be another week, at least, before everything gets finalized.
I think UH has more pressing concerns at the moment.

  39. Stephen Tsai January 31, 2015 4:22 pm

I’m convinced Hawaii — the state, not the school — is not for everyone.
It’s not like any other state — which is a good thing for most, not-so-great for some.

  40. Warrior Dave January 31, 2015 4:33 pm

#36, I can’t believe everyone didn’t know this from the time it was announced. It was so obvious. That’s why it bothers me to heat BJ still talk For UH and make deals. Can’t believe he moves the Colorado game to a Thursday without TV being involved. I don’t buy into the statement that 2 extra days to play against the defending national Champs makes any sense. BJ, please just leave already. I’d rather do without you.

  41. Andrew January 31, 2015 4:43 pm

Well at least now we know exactly what the violations are.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/20150131_NCAA_UH_mens_basketball_team_cited_for_seven_violations.html?id=290442541

I’d like to see what kind of defense Gib comes up with for that one. I hope the NCAA gives him some kind of suspension from any kind of coaching, both him and Akana. Its sad that their actions affect the University that they’re not even associated with anymore.

  42. oneseason January 31, 2015 6:45 pm

The NCAA notice of allegations seems damning to me, making the decision not to renew contracts seem very reasonable if it is not refuted. Hopefully the former coach will present his side. He certainly seemed anxious to do that at the end of the year.

Allegation 2 is particularly interesting in its scope of interviews and sanctioning.

  43. cappie the dog January 31, 2015 8:28 pm

    38.

There were some charge calls that weren’t even close.

I went to the Na Wahine game this evening.

Judy Mosley-McAfee’s children have a lot of poise. Charming kids.

You could read the grief on Mosley-McAfee’s sister’s face. The emotions are still raw.

I wish Hawaii self-imposed a post-season ban on themselves. They can’t afford to lose scholarships.

  44. champ January 31, 2015 8:39 pm

#24 Trojan. you are right everything up there has been a bunch of crap. As I said before, do away with the regents cause they no mo COMMON SENSE! Create a commission with Jeff Portnoy and Bobby Curran, they got a lot of common sense, as heads of the “COMMISSION”. Ever since Evan Dobelle and Herman Frazier , and that was a long time ago, UH has been going down hill so something is not working right with the regents and related connections. Clean House already. We need people with common sense! I tired of this BS!!!

  45. al January 31, 2015 9:07 pm

Jeff port not is on the board of regents.

  46. al January 31, 2015 9:08 pm

    Portnoy…sorry. Darn auto-spell.

  47. hatakeman January 31, 2015 9:28 pm

“F111 May 7, 2014…played in a basketball scrimmage with men’s basketball student-athletes during their official paid visits; and (2) members of the men’s basketball staff, including Arnold and Benjy Taylor, (Taylor), then assistant men’s basketball coach, were present for the scrimmage.” Ref. NOTICE OF ALLEGATIONS Case No. 00202 January 30, 2015 Page No. 8 This was in reference to…”Further, the scrimmage exceeded the maximum number of four men’s basketball student-athletes who could permissibly participate at a time. [NCAA Bylaws 13.11.2.1-(h), 17.1.6.2.2 and 17.1.6.3.4 (2012-13)]” “F113…Further, Fisher stated that Arnold instructed the men’s basketball staff to fabricate a story that the scrimmage during official paid visit was neither arranged nor observed by the men’s basketball staff and to report the story to the institution’s compliance office in order to conceal the violation.”

No collateral damage??? I don’t know. The reference to Benjy Taylor being present at an impermissible scrimmage(s) may result in some collateral damage. I wonder if UH will have to change out the entire coaching staff from the 2013-14 season, regardless if the participation were at the instruction of the head coach.

  48. NotNasti January 31, 2015 9:36 pm

Al: Jeff Portnoy is definitely on the Board of Regents.

  49. al February 1, 2015 12:17 am

Nasti…I was pointing that out to 45. My auto-spell concluded that “Portnoy = port not”

  50. logicalvoice February 1, 2015 5:34 am

Hawaii athletics needs to get over this self defeating process about not hiring the best candidate and only hiring candidates with some sort of Hawaii ties. By subscribing to this xenophobic procedure Hawaii is eliminating 99 percent of the candidate pool. What is the rationale behind this idiotic mindset? This unending battle with the mainland is destroying Hawaii athletics. Look where it has gotten us, we have the worst D1 program in the country.

  51. kapakahi February 1, 2015 7:33 am

    ST,

How come no mention of SB John Ursua…….among those returning from missions……in your article in this morning’s paper?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI8GN1VuNyQ

    Hmmm…..

  52. Maddog50 February 1, 2015 7:57 am

Steven thanks for the update today. Now it is a wait and see. Overall in my opinion solid group. Mr. Ulu Perry would be absolutely fantastic. Coach Naoele is certainly qualified to bring this young man along. Had a chance to visit practice and watched most of the time the OL go throug their paces. There will be a noticeable difference in this group as the youngsters gained experience. Just hangin in there till Wednesdayy. On another note just finished moving a couple tons of heavy wet deep snow(Chicago). You are so lucky and I just am not!!!!! Go Warriors!!!!

  53. kapakahi February 1, 2015 8:00 am

    ST,

Were you able to verify whether there are……ten (10) or eleven (11) visitors…….tripping UH this weekend?

  54. Shoko February 1, 2015 8:01 am

    Interesting situation for Hensley.

On the one hand you have a solid offer from UH where they basically say “we want you to play for Hawaii!”. And on the other hand you have B12 and the ACC saying there’s a “possibility” there might be a last-minute opening should a “preferred” prospect fail to pan out one reason or another.

Kind of makes a player feel like leftovers.

  55. warriorsanddolphins February 1, 2015 8:47 am

kapakahi, if you look at the scout website it shows the pictures of the recruits. Borden, Matautia, Afalava, Apelu, Wilson are committed already. I see that Perry and Alo- Wily are others. The four others i dont recognize

  56. Derek February 1, 2015 9:22 am

I thought Cam Hayes, CB committed too! What’s up with Ursua?

  57. Stephen Tsai February 1, 2015 9:39 am

    Kapakahi:
There were 12 visitors this weekend, by my count.

  58. Stephen Tsai February 1, 2015 9:41 am

Ursua is believed to be in Clearinghouse limbo, as of now.

  59. Stephen Tsai February 1, 2015 9:42 am

    Derek:
As I mentioned earlier, Hayes, as of now, will not be signing a letter of intent on Wednesday. It’s complicated.

  60. Stephen Tsai February 1, 2015 9:44 am

When signing day is over, I can explain things in detail. Right now, because it’s live recruiting, it’s quite fluid.
